SLP Other 2023 Sixty Years of Frequency-Domain Monaural Speech Enhancement: From Traditional to Deep Learning Methods. Trends in hearing Speech noise-reduction methods using deep learning and hybrid approaches usually scored better than traditional methods for simulated normal-hearing listeners, but showed smaller and mixed benefits for simulated hearing-impaired listeners. SLP Case Series 2023 Exploring the Efficacy of the Effortful Swallow Maneuver for Improving Swallowing in People With Parkinson Disease-A Pilot Study. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Responses to four weeks of effortful swallow practice, tongue-pressure feedback, and liquid-thickening instruction were mixed in five people with Parkinson disease who completed the program. Some safety scores improved, but no consistent pattern emerged. PT OT SLP RCT 2023 Theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation for dysphagia patients during recovery stage of stroke: a randomized controlled trial. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine For stroke patients with swallowing difficulties, adding four weeks of intermittent theta-burst stimulation to standard therapy improved swallowing function more than sham stimulation. This benefit held for both supratentorial and brainstem strokes, while continuous theta-burst stimulation showed inconsistent effects depending on stroke location. SLP Other 2024 Clinical feeding assessment: An effective screening test to predict aspiration in children in low resource settings. Journal of pediatric rehabilitation medicine A clinical feeding assessment is a sensitive screening tool for aspiration in children. A negative result reliably rules out aspiration, allowing clinicians to avoid invasive instrumental testing. However, a positive result has low specificity, meaning many children are falsely flagged and require further evaluation. PT OT SLP Other 2024 A roadmap for research in post-stroke fatigue: Consensus-based core recommendations from the third Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Experts recommend assessing every stroke survivor for fatigue using a structured interview tool to identify modifiable causes like sleep, mood, or medication side effects. For research, they propose a specific 7-item scale, noting current evidence for treatments is conflicting and insufficient to guide practice. SLP Survey 2024 COVID-19 and Remote Learning: Predictive Factors of Perceived Improvement or Worsening of the Voice in Brazilian Teachers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Most teachers reported no voice change during remote learning. Those who improved used their voice less and at lower intensity. Those who worsened used their voice more and at higher intensity. Voice symptoms appearing or disappearing tracked with these changes. SLP RCT 2024 ParkinSong Online: Feasibility of Telehealth Delivery and Remote Data Collection for a Therapeutic Group Singing Study in Parkinson's. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair No speech loudness or wellbeing improvements were found after 12 weeks of online group singing in 28 people with Parkinson's. The program was feasible and acceptable, but some voice and anxiety scores declined. SLP Case Report 2024 Acoustic Effects of Vocal Warm-Up: A 7-Week Longitudinal Case Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A single occupational voice user showed improved acoustic voice measures after each water resistance therapy session. Changes in sustained vowel measures were consistent, but running speech measures varied. This case report cannot prove the exercises work for other patients. PT SLP Pilot 2024 Developing Educational Health Modules to Improve Vocal Wellness in Mask-Wearing Occupational Voice Users. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Four mask-wearing healthcare workers increased their use of hydration, posture, vocal naps and warm-ups after viewing free web modules, but reported vocal effort stayed the same. The modules were understandable and actionable, yet did not reduce symptoms in this tiny pilot. SLP Pilot 2024 Quantifying Vocal Repertoire Tessituras Through Real-Time Measures. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Four singers’ self-rated ease matched their Voice Range Profiles better than expert listeners’ ratings did. When a key aligned with a singer’s dynamic agility, they reported less strain. Experts showed weak agreement and missed these fit differences, so trust the singer’s own feedback over outside opinion. SLP Protocol 2024 A Semiautomated Protocol Towards Quantifying Vocal Effort in Relation to Vocal Performance During a Vocal Loading Task. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A lab vocal loading protocol raised perceived vocal effort and voice pitch in healthy students. Noise alone increased effort by 17.6 on the effort scale; after 30 minutes, effort remained 22.7 higher than baseline. This is not a treatment. SLP Survey 2023 Perceptions of Vocal Performance Impairment in Singers with and without Hearing Loss. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Singers with hearing loss reported more voice problems and greater singing voice handicap. Their perceived singing accuracy varied by sex: men mostly reported no negative effect, women showed some accuracy differences. SLP Cohort 2023 Characterization of Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia Using Acoustic and Aerodynamic Voice Metrics. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Standard acoustic and aerodynamic voice tests could not distinguish patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia from those with other voice disorders. There was substantial overlap in results between the groups, meaning these metrics alone are not reliable for diagnosis or for selecting research participants. SLP Survey 2023 Adjustment of Health-Care Service Delivery Among Phoniatricians and ENT Specialists During the COVID-19 Pandemic, A UEP Survey. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation During the first wave, 154 phoniatricians and ENT physicians widely changed practice: most postponed elective care, screened patients, used PPE, and shifted some visits to telemedicine, but practices varied by region. SLP Other 2023 COVID-19: Acoustic Measures of Voice in Individuals Wearing Different Facemasks. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Compared with no mask, the masks did not significantly change voice volume, pitch, or first formant in nineteen adults with normal voice. Some mask combinations differed from each other. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Persistent Dysphonia in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation At least three months after discharge, 25% of ICU patients and 10.3% of ward patients had persistent voice problems. In ICU survivors, voice trouble strongly tracked with swallowing difficulty. Most ICU cases showed vocal cord weakness or paralysis, while ward cases mostly showed cord thinning. SLP Other 2024 The Effects of Remote Signal Transmission and Recording on Acoustical Measures of Simulated Essential Vocal Tremor: Considerations for Remote Treatment Research and Telepractice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In simulated vocal tremor, remote Zoom audio changed some voice tremor measures, especially intensity modulation and voice quality. Pitch modulation measures stayed close to local recordings, so telepractice should not rely on remote intensity or quality estimates alone. SLP Other 2024 Machine Learning-based Voice Assessment for the Detection of Positive and Recovered COVID-19 Patients. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A smartphone voice test correctly sorted 80% of healthy people, 100% of people who tested positive, and 60% of recovered people in a small external test. In training, voice tasks averaged 90.24% correct. PT SLP Cohort 2024 Vocal Signs and Symptoms Related to COVID-19 and Risk Factors for their Persistence. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation People recovering from mild to moderate COVID-19 reported more vocal symptoms than before infection. Voice fatigue and dry throat persisted in many. Oxygen therapy use was linked to higher symptom scores after recovery. SLP Survey 2024 The Impact of Masking Habits on Voice in a Sub-population of Healthcare Workers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation One third of surveyed healthcare workers reported voice handicap. Surgical mask users reported higher vocal fatigue than those using cloth or N95 masks, but mask duration and type showed no link to voice handicap or effort. SLP Pilot 2024 Characterization of Source-Filter Interactions in Vocal Vibrato Using a Neck-Surface Vibration Sensor: A Pilot Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In nine singers, a neck vibration sensor captured pitch vibrato just as well as a microphone, but missed the faster intensity wobble seen in audio. This confirms the microphone picks up vocal tract filtering effects that the neck sensor does not. SLP Case-Control 2024 Relative Fundamental Frequency in Individuals with Globus Syndrome and Muscle Tension Dysphagia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Speech-language pathologists should not expect voice acoustic tests to reveal laryngeal muscle tension in patients with globus syndrome or muscle tension dysphagia. These patients showed no difference in relative fundamental frequency compared to typical speakers, suggesting any tension present does not affect voice production. SLP Cohort 2024 Voice Quality and Vocal Tract Discomfort Symptoms in Patients With COVID-19. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Hospitalized patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 reported more frequent and severe throat discomfort than healthy staff. Clinicians noted their voices were perceptibly rougher and breathier, though the impairment remained mild overall. SLP Pilot 2024 Cognitive Mechanisms in Pediatric Voice Therapy - An Initial Examination. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In six children with voice nodules or edema, better scores on some thinking, motor, and memory tasks were linked to greater voice improvement after therapy, but some links ran the other way. The tiny sample makes this a question to test, not proof. SLP Other 2023 The Effect of Bilingualism on Production and Perception of Vocal Fry. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Bilingual speakers produced vocal fry more often in English than Spanish. Bilingual listeners identified hoarseness and roughness more frequently than monolingual listeners, suggesting language knowledge alters voice perception, though the small sample limits generalization. SLP Other 2024 The Effect of Masks and Respirators on Acoustic Voice Analysis During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Surgical masks do not significantly alter standard acoustic voice analysis results. FFP3 respirators affect shimmer and HNR values, making them unreliable for those specific measures. Sex matters: FFP3 masks alter more parameters in men than women. Clinicians should choose masks based on which voice metrics they need to evaluate. SLP Other 2024 External Validity of Calibrated Measurements from a Laser-Projection Transnasal Fiberoptic High-Speed Videoendoscopy System. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Calibrated laryngeal measurements were less accurate when the scope was tilted or the surface was not flat. Vertical error rose with angle, and horizontal error was higher on a 3D surface. SLP Other 2024 Normative Values of Client-Reported Outcome Measures and Self-Ratings of Six Voice Parameters via the VoiceEvalU8 App. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation For vocally healthy adults, the VoiceEvalU8 app produced scores identical to paper-and-pencil tests for voice handicap and fatigue. However, these adults rated their voice quality as significantly worse in the morning than in the evening. These norms apply only to healthy voices. SLP Other 2024 Framework for Indirect Spatial Calibration of the Horizontal Plane of Endoscopic Laryngeal Images. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Vocal fold width is the most reliable reference feature for measuring laryngeal lesions in endoscopic images. Unlike vocal fold length, which changes with pitch, or blood vessels, which vary in visibility, vocal fold width remains consistent across different phonatory conditions, allowing for more accurate pre- and post-treatment comparisons. SLP Case Series 2024 Vocal Fold Paralysis Following COVID-19 Vaccination: Query of VAERS Database. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Nineteen patients developed vocal fold paralysis after COVID-19 vaccination, with symptoms starting on average 12 days later. This is a database query showing correlation, not causation. Voice complaints post-vaccination warrant laryngoscopy, but the event is exceedingly rare. SLP Other 2024 Detection of Vocal Fold Image Obstructions in High-Speed Videoendoscopy During Connected Speech in Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia: A Convolutional Neural Networks Approach. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A computer tool sorted high-speed laryngoscopy frames during speech as clear or blocked views of the vocal folds correctly in most tested frames from 7 adults, including 4 with spasmodic dysphonia. It may help review long recordings, but the paper does not test clinical use. SLP Other 2023 Relative Difficulty in the Acquisition of the Phonetic Parameters of Obstruent Coda Voicing: Evidence from Mandarin-Speaking Learners of French. Language and speech Mandarin learners of French matched native speakers on vowel duration cues but failed to produce correct consonant voicing. Therapists should prioritize duration-based feedback for these patients, as voicing errors persist despite adequate length control. SLP Other 2023 Speaking Rate, Oro-Laryngeal Timing, and Place of Articulation Effects on Burst Amplitude: Evidence From English and Tamil. Language and speech Faster speech reduces the loudness of consonant release bursts relative to the following vowel. This effect is stronger in English than in Tamil. The change in acoustic energy may make consonants sound weaker or harder to distinguish at high speeds. SLP Systematic Review 2023 Persistent Features of Laryngeal Injury Following Endotracheal Intubation: A Systematic Review. Dysphagia After ICU intubation, many patients still have voice and swallowing problems weeks later. This review found persistent issues in 23–33% of survivors, but the evidence is weak because studies used different tests and relied heavily on patient reports rather than scans. SLP Other 2023 Quantitative Analysis of Temporal Parameters Correlated with Aspiration and Lesion Location in Stroke Patients. Dysphagia In stroke patients, longer laryngeal closure duration was linked to aspiration, but this association was borderline in the final model. Lesion location changed swallowing timing: supratentorial strokes had longer oral phases, while infratentorial strokes had longer upper sphincter opening. SLP Cohort 2023 Defining Normal Sequential Swallowing Biomechanics. Dysphagia During repeated sips, healthy adults did not all use the same hyolaryngeal pattern. Older adults more often kept the airway closed between swallows, and second swallows were slower. Sequential swallowing is a variable challenge task, not a uniform pattern. SLP Cohort 2024 The association between longitudinal declines in speech sound accuracy and speech intelligibility in speakers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Clinical linguistics & phonetics In 21 speakers with ALS, intelligibility dropped sharply when phoneme accuracy fell below 75%. Consonant errors hurt intelligibility more than vowel errors, especially for fricatives and affricates. For those already below 75% accuracy, improving phoneme scores may not help intelligibility. SLP Other 2023 Communicating Emotion: Vocal Expression of Linguistic and Emotional Prosody in Children With Mild to Profound Hearing Loss Compared With That of Normal Hearing Peers. Ear and hearing Average pitch, pitch variation and loudness did not differ between children with hearing aids, cochlear implants or normal hearing. The hearing-loss groups showed a poorer pitch difference between happy and sad speech, but listeners were not tested. SLP Narrative Review 2023 Addressing disparities in speech-language pathology and laryngology services with telehealth. Journal of communication disorders Telehealth can help some people access voice care, but it does not solve the underlying barriers. Patients without good internet, those with complex physical needs, or those who need a physical examination still require in-person services. A mix of video and face-to-face visits is likely necessary. SLP Other 2024 Reliability and validity study of a Turkish version of the Communicative Effectiveness Survey-Revised (CES-R). International journal of language & communication disorders The Turkish Communicative Effectiveness Survey-Revised reliably distinguishes general from difficult communication situations in people with Parkinson's disease. Scores were stable over two weeks and highly consistent, supporting its use to assess participation barriers beyond simple speech intelligibility. SLP Cohort 2024 Determination of the Relationship between Globus-Type Complaints and COVID-19 Anxiety in Adult Cases with COVID-19. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Adults with acute COVID-19 reported significantly more severe globus-type throat symptoms than healthy controls, though anxiety levels did not differ between the groups. Symptoms decreased substantially after the first month. A weak link between throat symptoms and anxiety was found only in the COVID-19 group. SLP Other 2024 Perceptual Grouping in Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Exploratory Magnetoencephalography Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adults with autism showed slower and weaker early brain responses to visual grouping cues than controls, despite matching accuracy. This suggests the brain works harder to process similarity cues, even when the task seems easy. SLP Other 2024 Language Contact Within the Speaker: Phonetic Variation and Crosslinguistic Influence. Language and speech Early Cantonese-English bilinguals produce English stops with less voicing and more unreleased endings than monolinguals. This reflects systematic influence from Cantonese phonology, where these sounds are strictly voiceless and unreleased. The pattern persists in spontaneous speech regardless of recent language switching. SLP RCT 2023 A Pragmatic Clinical Trial of Hearing Screening in Primary Care Clinics: Effect of Setting and Provider Encouragement. Ear and hearing Older adults completed hearing screening at 100% when offered in clinic, versus 22.7% and 26.8% at home. Provider encouragement did not improve home completion, and fewer patients asked to screen at home completed diagnostic evaluation. SLP RCT 2023 Changes in the communicative skills of young people as a result of a communication training. CoDAS Young people who took a communication training showed higher scores after training for clarity of expression than a lecture group. Within the training group, self and parent ratings also improved for feedback, and video ratings showed more adequate speech rate and eye contact. SLP Other 2023 Reference Values for Videofluoroscopic Measures of Swallowing: An Update. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Reference ranges for swallowing video measures in healthy adults aged 21 to 82 years can help clinicians compare patient VFSS values, but the limits are preliminary and depend on the exact test method. SLP Pilot 2023 Effect of an online Workplace Vocal Health and Low Stress Levels Promotion Program implemented in a Colombian university during COVID-19 pandemic. CoDAS The online program did not significantly reduce stress levels. However, it was associated with improved maximum phonation time and a trend toward reduced vocal fatigue perception. These findings suggest potential benefits for voice endurance and self-awareness, but the small sample size limits certainty. SLP Case Report 2023 Dynamic vocal analysis: vocal functionality evaluation. CoDAS This paper demonstrates how to use Dynamic Vocal Analysis (DVA) to assess voice functionality. It shows examples of spectrograms for healthy and disordered voices but does not test whether the method improves patient outcomes or works better than other assessments. SLP Other 2023 Passaggio on chorists' voice range profile: preliminary study of frequency and intensity. CoDAS Passaggio breaks were visible or audible in no more than 30% of 67 trained choir singers. They appeared more often in sopranos and tenors than contraltos and basses. The chart can locate breaks, but the study did not set standard values. SLP Other 2024 Swallowing Characteristics in Patients with Multiple System Atrophy Analyzed Using FEES Examination. Dysphagia In MSA patients on full oral diets, nasal camera swallowing tests showed thin liquids were least safe: 17 of 24 had material enter above the vocal folds and 5 went below the vocal folds. Residue was common, and group comparisons were mostly not different. ← Previous PAGE 9 OF 17 Next →
