SLP Other 2023 Examining Relationships Between GRBAS Ratings and Acoustic, Aerodynamic and Patient-Reported Voice Measures in Adults With Voice Disorders. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Clinician ratings of voice quality correlated significantly with acoustic and patient-reported measures, but the relationships were weak. No single objective test or questionnaire captured the same information as a GRBAS rating. Multiple measures remain necessary for a complete voice evaluation. SLP Survey 2023 Prevalence of Dysphonia in Non hospitalized Patients with COVID-19 in Lombardy, the Italian Epicenter of the Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Nearly half of non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients reported voice problems. For many, this lasted over two weeks. Voice fatigue was common and often occurred without obvious hoarseness. Dysphagia affected one in six patients. These symptoms were self-reported and not objectively tested. SLP Other 2023 Impact of the Paraglottic Space on Voice Production in an MRI-Based Vocal Fold Model. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Soft tissue beside the vocal folds widened the glottis and reduced closure in a computer voice model. Stiffer vocal folds partly compensated. This suggests models of weak vocal fold adduction should include that tissue. SLP Case Report 2023 Spontaneous Vocal Fold Polyps Remission after Lockdown for Covid-19 Pandemic: Does Vocal Load Matter? Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Five professional voice users with vocal fold polyps saw their lesions shrink or resolve after a lockdown forced them to reduce voice use by at least 70%. No surgery, medication, or therapy was given. This suggests vocal rest may help, but does not prove it. SLP Other 2023 Voice Feature Selection to Improve Performance of Machine Learning Models for Voice Production Inversion. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Selecting voice features that are not sensitive to measurement noise improves machine learning estimates of vocal fold pressure and stiffness. Excluding absolute amplitude measures and using normalized ones balances accuracy with robustness. This aids diagnosis and therapy monitoring. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Incidence and Outcomes of Laryngeal Complications Following Adult Cardiac Surgery: A National Analysis. Dysphagia Laryngeal complications after cardiac surgery affect 1.7% of patients. They do not increase mortality but are linked to more pneumonia, longer stays, and higher costs. Risk rises with age, female sex, and complex valve operations, while high-volume hospitals see fewer cases. SLP Pilot 2022 Characterizing Effortful Swallows from Healthy Community Dwelling Adults Across the Lifespan Using High-Resolution Cervical Auscultation Signals and MBSImP Scores: A Preliminary Study. Dysphagia High-resolution cervical auscultation signals distinguished effortful from normal swallows with 76% accuracy in healthy adults, but videofluoroscopy ratings showed no difference. This suggests the sensor detects the maneuver even when standard clinical scores do not change. SLP Case Report 2022 Pediatric Medullary Stroke, Severe Dysphagia, and Multimodal Intervention. Dysphagia In a child with severe swallowing failure after medullary stroke, Botox, cricopharyngeal myotomy, and intensive speech therapy were followed by movement of thin liquids and solids with left head tilt and no aspiration. SLP Narrative Review 2022 An International Commentary on Dysphagia and Dysphonia During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Dysphagia Dysphagia and dysphonia are common after COVID-19, especially in ICU survivors. While many regain normal swallowing by discharge, non-ICU patients often retain dietary modifications. New airway complications like subglottic stenosis can emerge weeks after hospital discharge. SLP Other 2023 Transcribing toddler vocalizations: comparison of a modified naturalistic listening approach with phonetic transcription. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Real-time listening counts matched phonetic transcription closely for total syllables and consonants in toddlers with cleft palate. However, it consistently missed emerging word-final sounds like fricatives and /l/. Use it for quick inventory screening, not for detecting subtle new consonants. SLP Other 2023 Interaction between Phrasal Structure and Vowel Tenseness in German: An Acoustic and Articulatory Study. Language and speech German speakers lengthened both tense and lax vowels before phrase boundaries. The study found no clinical application for therapists, as it is a basic phonetic analysis of native speakers without speech impairments. SLP Qualitative 2022 Translating Ultrasound into Clinical Practice for the Assessment of Swallowing and Laryngeal Function: A Speech and Language Pathology-Led Consensus Study. Dysphagia Experts ranked reliability and normative data as the top priorities before ultrasound can be used clinically for swallowing. Current evidence is insufficient for diagnosis. Clinicians should treat ultrasound as a research or biofeedback tool only until these standards are established. SLP Other 2023 Early diagnostic indicators of childhood apraxia of speech in young children with 7q11.23 duplication syndrome: preliminary findings. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Toddlers with 7q11.23 duplication syndrome showed less mature babble, fewer vocalizations, and limited consonant and vocalization diversity than typical toddlers, more closely resembling children later diagnosed with apraxia. These patterns may flag risk, but they did not confirm a diagnosis. SLP Other 2023 Comparing metrics for quantification of children's tongue shape complexity using ultrasound imaging. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Ultrasound measures of tongue shape complexity can distinguish simple vowels from complex liquids in both adults and children. However, individual sounds often overlap, so these metrics currently identify broad patterns rather than classifying specific speech errors. SLP Case Series 2023 Safety and Clinical Benefits of Laryngeal Closure in Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Dysphagia In 26 people with ALS, laryngeal closure had no severe surgical complications. 25 kept swallowing function, and no severe aspiration pneumonia referrals were reported. This small retrospective series suggests possible benefit, not proof. SLP Case-Control 2022 Low Frequency Air-Bone Gap in Meniere's Disease: Relationship With Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features of Endolymphatic Hydrops. Ear and hearing Low-frequency air-bone gaps in Meniere's disease are strongly linked to endolymph touching the stapes footplate on MRI. The gap often disappears later, so a normal audiogram does not rule out this structural change. OT SLP Survey 2023 Transition to Kindergarten for Children on the Autism Spectrum: Perspectives of Korean-American Parents. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Korean-American parents put child behavior and teacher cooperation first. They named school-system knowledge and teacher relationships as top barriers. First-generation parents, lower income, and self-contained placement were linked to more reported challenges. SLP Other 2022 NAL-NL2 Prescriptive Targets for Bone Conduction Devices With an Adaptation to Device Constraints in the Low Frequencies. Ear and hearing Bone conduction device users rated a moderate low-frequency reduction better than the setting with the most low-frequency output for own voice, while music was better with more low-frequency output. Speech scores stayed high, but speech in noise remained below normal hearing norms. OT SLP Other 2023 Low-Cost Technology-Aided Programs for Supporting People With Motor, Visual, and Intellectual Disabilities in Functional Forms of Occupation and Communication: Proof-of-Concept Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Four adults with severe motor, visual, and intellectual disabilities independently used low-cost smartphone and tablet systems to choose music, send voice messages or video calls, and answer questions about brief stories. Baseline support was withdrawn after practice, and all participants managed these tasks without help. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Functional Laryngeal Assessment in Patients with Tracheostomy Following COVID-19 a Prospective Cohort Study. Dysphagia In 48 patients with tracheostomy after severe COVID-19, impaired airway protection was linked to longer artificial airway use and ICU stays. At discharge, most tolerated regular food and fluids, but the study had no control group. SLP Narrative Review 2022 Striving Toward Equity in Health Care for People With Communication Disabilities. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR SLP Other 2023 Position Statement of the Union of European Phoniatricians (UEP): Fees and Phoniatricians' Role in Multidisciplinary and Multiprofessional Dysphagia Management Team. Dysphagia European phoniatricians recommend that FEES be performed primarily by medical doctors to rule out structural disease, though speech-language pathologists may conduct follow-up exams for therapy guidance depending on local laws. SLP Other 2022 The Influence of Communication Sample Length on Reliability and Convergent Validity of Vocal Measures Derived From the Communication Complexity Scale. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR For children with autism who use few or no words, a 10-minute sample from the start of a standard play-based assessment provides reliable vocal data. Shorter samples work for consonant inventory, but counting total or communicative vocalizations requires the full 10 minutes. SLP Cohort 2022 Child language and autism diagnosis impact hierarchical temporal structure of parent-child vocal interactions in early childhood. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In typical development, parent-child vocal interactions became less rigidly structured as children's expressive language grew. Dyads of autistic toddlers showed more rigid interaction structure than matched typical dyads, even when language levels were similar, suggesting a difference in social reciprocity rather than language ability alone. SLP Other 2023 Potential of Rice-Flour Jelly Made from High-Amylose Rice as a Dysphagia Diet: Evaluation of Pharyngeal Residue by FEES. Dysphagia Rice-flour jelly left less residue in the throat than rice-porridge during swallowing tests. It matched mashed rice-porridge in residue levels. This suggests rice-flour jelly is a safe, easier-to-prepare alternative for patients needing soft rice-based foods. SLP Other 2022 Videokymographic index of glottic function: an analysis of diagnostic accuracy. CoDAS A new index using high-speed video parameters accurately distinguished women with behavioral voice disorders from those without. It achieved 76.4% sensitivity and 89.2% specificity, offering a quantitative tool to support laryngeal diagnosis in women. SLP Pilot 2022 Home language environment in relation to language outcome in Brazilian toddlers who are hard of hearing and controls with typical hearing - a pilot study including reliability analyses of the LENA recording system. CoDAS Home language counts did not differ between Brazilian toddlers with typical hearing and those who are hard of hearing. The home recording system tracked adult and child speech in Portuguese, but it counted more adult words and fewer child sounds than people did. SLP Narrative Review 2023 Cross-System Integration of Respiration and Deglutition: Function, Treatment, and Future Directions. Dysphagia Training head and neck cancer survivors to swallow during expiration improved airway protection and swallowing mechanics. This preliminary evidence suggests better timing reduces residue and penetration, though larger randomized trials are still needed to confirm efficacy. SLP Cohort 2022 Reflux symptoms and vocal characteristics in adults with non-organic voice disorders. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Reflux symptom scores rose with caffeine intake, voice handicap, and glottal function measures. Abnormal vocal fold phase closure on stroboscopy was also linked to higher reflux scores. These correlations were fair, not strong, so reflux symptoms alone cannot confirm laryngopharyngeal reflux in voice patients. SLP Narrative Review 2023 Review of methods for conducting speech research with minimally verbal individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Augmentative and alternative communication (Baltimore, Md. : 1985) This review outlines how to collect and analyze speech data from minimally verbal children with autism. It compares natural language samples, repetition tasks, and acoustic measures, offering practical guidance on choosing methods that yield reliable data for clinical or research use. SLP Cohort 2022 Differential Effects of Binaural Pitch Fusion Range on the Benefits of Voice Gender Differences in a "Cocktail Party" Environment for Bimodal and Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users. Ear and hearing For bimodal cochlear implant users, broad binaural pitch fusion strongly predicts reduced ability to separate voices by gender in noise. Users with fusion ranges of 3 octaves or greater lost their bimodal advantage. Bilateral users showed no such relationship, as their benefits were minimal. SLP Other 2023 A Probe Study on Vocal Development in Two Infants at Risk for Cerebral Palsy. Developmental neurorehabilitation Two infants at risk for cerebral palsy showed delayed and variable canonical babbling compared to ten typically developing peers. The standard 0.15 threshold for onset was rarely met by either group in home recordings, suggesting current criteria may not apply to all-day sampling. SLP Other 2023 Singing and Speaking Ability in Parkinson's Disease and Spinocerebellar Ataxia. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR For Parkinson's disease, singing improves speech intelligibility. For cerebellar ataxia, it does not; singing is rated significantly worse in ataxia. Providing a written model to read improves intelligibility in both groups, but singing only helps Parkinson's. SLP Other 2023 Optimization of Sound Coding Strategies to Make Singing Music More Accessible for Cochlear Implant Users. Trends in hearing For cochlear implant users, switching to a music-specific sound processor program improved how clearly they understood lyrics and how much they enjoyed the music. The new setting widened the range of soft and loud sounds they could hear. SLP Cohort 2023 Alterations in deglutition in children with congenital Zika virus syndrome. CoDAS Children with congenital Zika syndrome had frequent oral and pharyngeal swallowing difficulties, but acoustic Doppler tests showed no difference from typical children. Clinical signs like gagging and panting were common, while instrument measures were not. SLP Other 2023 Short Implicit Voice Training Affects Listening Effort During a Voice Cue Sensitivity Task With Vocoder-Degraded Speech. Ear and hearing Listening to a story in a specific voice for 30 minutes did not help people detect small differences in that voice. However, when the speech was degraded to simulate a cochlear implant, hearing the trained voice required less mental effort. OT SLP Qualitative 2023 Self-advocates with Down syndrome research the lived experiences of COVID-19 lockdowns in Aotearoa New Zealand. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID People with Down syndrome relied heavily on family for support and information during lockdowns, with most lacking professional assistance. While isolation from friends caused distress, participants used technology like Zoom to stay connected and generally reported resilience and positive adaptation. SLP Other 2023 Differences in Glottal Closure and Visibility of the Anterior Commissure during Rigid-90°, Rigid-70°, and Flexible Laryngostroboscopy. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Flexible endoscopy showed better vocal fold closure and anterior commissure visibility than rigid scopes in healthy adults. Rigid 70-degree scopes offered slightly better anterior visibility than 90-degree scopes but similar closure findings. Technique choice directly affects diagnostic interpretation. PT SLP Survey 2023 Effects of Occupation-Specific Vocal Stress on the Mental Health of Day Care Teachers. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Day care teachers who felt speaking was exhausting, had headaches or neck pain, or were exhausted after work reported greater mental health impairment and burnout risk. Speaking louder alone was not linked to mental health or burnout. SLP Case-Control 2023 Oropharyngeal geometry and acoustic parameters of voice in healthy and Parkinson's disease subjects. CoDAS People with Parkinson's disease had smaller oropharyngeal areas than healthy adults, but standard voice tests showed no group differences. Acoustic measures varied by sex and age, suggesting anatomy changes before voice quality does. SLP Cohort 2023 Fundamental Frequency Contour (Melody) of Infant Vocalizations across the First Year. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Infant vocal melodies shift from simple single arcs to complex patterns by month three, then stabilize. Canonical babbling shows significantly higher complexity than marginal babbling. This progression reflects growing vocal control and may serve as a risk marker for reduced vocal ability. SLP Systematic Review 2023 Mapping of the characteristics in the CoDAS journal publications in the voice area: a scoping review. CoDAS Most voice research in this Brazilian journal is cross-sectional, using self-assessments and perceptual ratings. Few are randomized trials. Many studies use unvalidated scales or omit key details, making it hard to apply findings directly or compare results across studies. SLP Other 2023 Nonlinear analysis by phase space reconstruction of healthy elderly voices. CoDAS Healthy elderly voices all showed four or more curves, but men had worse irregularity and spacing than women. These non-linear voice patterns differed by sex. SLP Other 2023 Performance of the phonatory deviation diagram in monitoring voice quality before and after voice exercise in individuals with Parkinson's Disease. CoDAS A brief vocal exercise improved shimmer and shifted voice diagrams toward normality, but did not change diagram categories. Most voices remained outside the normal range. Therapists should track visual shifts rather than expecting categorical changes. SLP Cohort 2023 Satisfaction and quality of life in cochlear implant users with long sensory deprivation. CoDAS Adults with at least ten years of hearing loss before cochlear implantation reported high satisfaction with the device, with no significant difference between those who lost hearing before or after learning to speak. The main complaints were cost and difficulty hearing in noise. SLP Cohort 2023 Quality of life in dysphagia and anxiety and depression symptoms pre and post-thyroidectomy. CoDAS Patients undergoing thyroidectomy reported improved swallowing-related quality of life and reduced anxiety and depression scores three months after surgery. However, no correlation was found between dysphagia severity and emotional symptoms, suggesting these issues may need separate clinical monitoring. SLP Cohort 2023 Activities and participation of children with language disorders in outpatient care according to the ICF. CoDAS In 32 children with language disorders, records showed common difficulties in learning, communication, daily routines, and self-care. Many of these details were not reported in the records. SLP Cohort 2023 Risk of dysphonia and voice quality in performing arts students. CoDAS In 38 performing arts students, voice risk scores did not track how altered their voices sounded, even though most scored high risk. All had some voice alteration, mostly mild. Students with other voice-using work scored higher on an actor questionnaire. SLP Other 2023 The Effect of Breathy Vocal Quality on Speech Intelligibility and Listening Effort in Background Noise. Trends in hearing Severe breathiness lowered speech intelligibility in noise, while even mild breathiness increased listening effort. The two factors did not interact, so breathiness and noise added to the difficulty separately rather than multiplying it. SLP Other 2023 Performance in an Audiovisual Selective Attention Task Using Speech-Like Stimuli Depends on the Talker Identities, But Not Temporal Coherence. Trends in hearing Seeing the talker's face helped listeners ignore background noise better than matching lip movements did. The benefit came from recognizing who was speaking, which reduced errors in identifying the wrong voice. This suggests face identity aids attention more than visual timing. ← Previous PAGE 8 OF 17 Next →
