WHAT IT FOUND

The voiced trill did not produce different immediate voice ratings in older women with and without self-perceived vocal changes, although judges most often rated voices as improved after 1 minute.

Key findings

01The judges most often rated voices as improved after 1 minute of voiced trill.

02The pattern of improved, worsened, or unchanged voices did not differ between women with and without self-perceived vocal changes.

03In women with self-perceived vocal changes, APQ was the only acoustic parameter with a significant association across the exercise times.

What it does not show

The study included only 53 socially active women aged 60 to 70, so it does not show what would happen in men or in older adults outside that age range. Participants were recruited by convenience, and no sample size calculation was done, so the results may not generalise. The women were not randomly assigned to groups. Groups were formed after testing based on self-perceived vocal changes and laryngeal examination findings. The study measured immediate effects only. It did not test whether the voice changes last after repeated sessions or improve daily communication. The acoustic results are hard to interpret because the normal values used were standardized for younger women, not older women. The study did not compare tongue trill with lip trill, although 17 participants used lip trill. Respiratory measures and voice-related quality of life were not assessed. The three judges had only moderate agreement when they repeated their perceptual ratings.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that 1 minute is the correct dose or that the benefit lasts. The paper measured immediate effects only, did not test repeated sessions, and the authors stated that the ideal duration cannot be determined.
