PT OT SLP RN RCT 2025 Clinical Effectiveness of Multimodal Exercise Combined With Supportive Music and Imagery in the Management of Poststroke Mood Disorders. The Journal of neuroscience nursing : journal of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses Stroke patients who added multimodal exercise and music imagery to standard care had significantly lower anxiety and depression scores than those receiving standard care alone. These improvements persisted for nine months after the five-week programme ended. OT Survey 2025 Description of School Outcomes Among Children With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Concussion Surveillance System Pilot. The Journal of school health Parents reported 9.9% of children aged 5-17 had a TBI in the past year. Sleep changes, fatigue, concentration trouble, light/noise sensitivity, and learning or memory problems were linked to missing school, extra help, or worse school functioning. PT OT Other 2024 Recovery after ischemic stroke: Effects of FuekFone home-based program on upper limb and cognitive function. International journal of nursing sciences Ischemic stroke patients at home using a TV game program had improved upper limb and cognitive scores over six weeks, but with no control group, natural recovery cannot be ruled out. OT RN Survey 2025 Mediation Analysis of the Social Isolation Between Stigma and Return-To-Work Readiness Among Young and Middle-Aged Patients With Stroke in China. Nursing open Among 154 young and middle-aged stroke survivors, higher stigma was linked to more social isolation, and social isolation was linked to lower readiness to return to work. These are associations, not proof that reducing stigma improves work outcomes. PT OT SLP RN Qualitative 2026 Clinical Implications for Management of Falls in Hospital Patients with Communication Disability After Stroke: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis. Journal of advanced nursing Hospital falls after stroke often go unexplained when severe aphasia prevents patients describing what happened. Staff documented communication problems as cognition, used equipment, and missed adapted education. Multidisciplinary plans, family support and speech-language input suggest safer falls prevention. PT OT SLP RN Other 2026 Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice of Informal Caregivers of People Living With Stroke: A Scoping Review of Recent Literature. Journal of advanced nursing Informal caregivers of people with stroke often lacked stroke and care knowledge, felt unprepared, yet were willing to manage mobility, medications, swallowing-related meals, appointments and emotional support. Clinicians should teach and check understanding, especially before discharge. PT OT RN Other 2026 A Realist Evaluation of the Implementation and Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Four Value-Based Healthcare Programmes. Journal of advanced nursing Heart Failure nurses used PROMs to triage and plan resources, but patients did not self-manage or share decisions. In Epilepsy, mood scores identified problems without services to act on them. PT OT Systematic Review 2026 A Systematic Review of Pain Catastrophizing and Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain. Pain management nursing : official journal of the American Society of Pain Management Nurses In adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain, higher pain catastrophizing consistently links to greater pain intensity and disability. It acts as a mediator of treatment effects, meaning reducing it helps relieve pain, but it does not reliably predict who will respond best to physical interventions like exercise. PT OT RN Cohort 2025 Predictors of functional disability in people with ischemic stroke: two to three years after the stroke. Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da U S P Two to three years after ischemic stroke, 37.4% of 155 survivors had moderate to severe disability. High initial neurological deficit, no thrombolysis, and new stroke were the main factors associated. PT OT SLP RN Other 2025 Lived experiences, depression, and quality of life in Korean women with Parkinson disease after deep brain stimulation: a multimethod study. Women's health nursing (Seoul, Korea) Quality of life and depression did not clearly improve in Korean women with Parkinson disease after deep brain stimulation, although motor symptoms improved. They described pain, visible device changes, battery costs, and fear of shutdown. OT Cohort 2026 Assessing Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury and Health-Related Quality of Life in Three Eastern European Countries. Journal of pediatric health care : official publication of National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates & Practitioners At discharge after pediatric traumatic brain injury, 30.6% of children aged 4-18 in Georgia and Moldova reported pain/discomfort and 23.8% reported usual-activity problems. Older children reported lower self-rated health. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2025 Effects of Sling Exercise Training on Walking Ability and Balance Function in Patients With Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Nursing & health sciences Daily-living scores and walking endurance were not shown to improve, but suspension-based stroke training (sling exercise, body-weight-supported treadmill and robotic-assisted locomotor training) improved balance and walking. PT OT RCT 2026 Feasibility and Acceptability of the Living My Life Program for Rural and Remote Stroke Survivors. The Australian journal of rural health Four of five rural stroke survivors completed a 12-week online coaching program, found it acceptable, and reported progress on personal goals using their own technology. This pilot shows it can be done, not that it works. OT Cohort 2026 Intracerebral Haemorrhage in the Top End of the Northern Territory; Risk Factors, Outcomes and the Presence of Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy in Indigenous Peoples. The Australian journal of rural health Functional recovery was poor after intracerebral haemorrhage: only 30.1% were independent at discharge, and with chronic kidney disease only 11.4% were independent. This was an observational hospital audit, not a treatment trial. OT RN Survey 2026 Associations Among Health Literacy, Decision Self-Efficacy, and Decisional Conflict in Stroke Survivor-Caregiver Dyads. The journal of nursing research : JNR Among 305 stroke survivor and caregiver pairs, survivors with higher health literacy and decision confidence reported less decisional conflict. Caregiver confidence was part of a pathway to less survivor conflict but associated with more caregiver conflict. This is association, not proof that training helps. PT OT RN Qualitative 2026 The Neglected Care Burden and Unmet Needs of Informal Caregivers of Stroke Survivors. A Qualitative Study. Scandinavian journal of caring sciences Caregivers of stroke survivors described heavy new roles, coordination and personal care, and feeling left without clear stroke information. They valued continuity with home physiotherapists and occupational therapists. OT RN Qualitative 2026 Self-care in stroke rehabilitation: a qualitative study. Revista brasileira de enfermagem Caregivers and rehabilitation staff said stroke survivors need clear teaching before going home, but hospital time is short. They described scarce equipment, poor team communication and caregiver burden as barriers to self-care. OT RN Cohort 2026 Impact of Cognitive Status at Skilled Nursing Facility Admission on Days Spent at Home Over the Year Following Traumatic Brain Injury Among Older Adults. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Among older adults with traumatic brain injury discharged to skilled nursing, lower brief cognitive screen scores at admission were linked with fewer days at home over the next year. Severe impairment had the lowest days at home. OT RCT 2021 Wearable vibrotactile stimulation for upper extremity rehabilitation in chronic stroke: clinical feasibility trial using the VTS Glove. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Wearing a vibrotactile glove three hours daily for eight weeks improved tactile perception and reduced finger spasticity compared with sham in 16 chronic stroke survivors. Some active range of motion also increased. This is a small feasibility trial. PT OT SLP Cohort 2026 Impact of multidisciplinary rehabilitation on functioning and quality of life in stroke survivors: a longitudinal retrospective analysis. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Stroke survivors in specialized multidisciplinary rehabilitation showed improved functional and quality of life scores up to 12 months, but overall quality of life did not improve and scores declined by 3 years. The study cannot separate rehabilitation from other care. OT Systematic Review 2026 Setbacks to strengths: A scoping review of positive psychology constructs among veterans and service members with traumatic brain injury. Rehabilitation psychology Most research on positive psychology after military TBI is cross-sectional and focuses on social support, resilience, and quality of life. Only 14 studies were intervention studies, so this review cannot show that any intervention works. PT OT RCT 2026 Effects of adding R-BoT + plus verticalization-based robotic locomotor training to conventional rehabilitation in patients with subacute stroke: a randomized controlled trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Adding R-BoT + plus robotic stepping to conventional rehab improved walking independence more than conventional rehab alone at 4 weeks and 3 months. The robot was given with usual therapy, not alone. OT Other 2026 Development and validation of a prediction model for activities of daily living dysfunction among stroke survivors: insights from the CHARLS cohort. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation This model flags stroke survivors more likely to have current ADL difficulty using depression, older age, falls, hypertension, arthritis, lung disease, social contact, sleep and drinking. It was not tested in practice. PT OT Pilot 2026 Transcutaneous spinal stimulation with upper extremity robotic training in chronic stroke and spinal cord injury: individual neurophysiological and clinical responses. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Adding cervical transcutaneous spinal stimulation to arm robotic and grip training produced no clear group-level arm gains. Some people with chronic stroke or spinal cord injury showed individual improvements in grip, arm scores, tone, or sensation. PT OT RCT 2026 Tai Ji for stroke rehabilitation: a randomized controlled trial on improving upper limb function and cortico-muscular coupling in stroke patients. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Stroke patients who added Tai Ji to standard medical treatment, health education, and upper limb rehabilitation had greater upper limb motor score gains after four weeks. Because Tai Ji was extra training, its unique effect is unclear. OT SLP Other 2026 Digital Aids for Social Media in Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury: Longitudinal Evaluation Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Only life satisfaction rose from before to after the study in adults with TBI who used Facebook aids. Emotional support, social connection and self-esteem did not change clearly. Participants rated the aids helpful, especially focus, filter and customization. OT Cohort 2026 Multidimensional Preinjury Health and 6-month Outcome After Traumatic Brain Injury in Older Adults Presenting With Mainly GCS 13-15. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Adding pre-injury frailty and daily-function measures to existing prediction models did not improve prediction in older adults with mostly mild traumatic brain injury, although the measures were linked to worse 6-month recovery. PT OT SLP Cohort 2026 Clinically interpretable prediction models of stroke functional outcomes: A national cohort study of adults in inpatient rehabilitation facilities in the US. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In US inpatient rehab, discharge self-care and mobility were best predicted by admission self-care and mobility, continence and length of stay. Therapy minutes had limited influence. OT Case Report 2026 Intention-driven functional electrical stimulation therapy using a wearable high-density electrode sleeve in chronic stroke: a case report. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In two adults with chronic stroke hand weakness, a wearable forearm sleeve supported multi-movement, intention-driven electrical stimulation during task practice; both had changes beyond small meaningful thresholds on hand function tests. PT OT SLP RCT 2026 Low-Frequency STN-DBS for Standing and Gait Initiation in Parkinson's Disease: A Double-Blinded Randomised Cross-Over Feasibility Trial. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Switching to low-frequency brain stimulation improved standing balance and movement initiation in Parkinson's, but caused tremor to return in 10 of 16 patients off medication. Clinical mobility scores did not change, so the benefit is only visible on specialised force-plate tests. PT OT Systematic Review 2026 Efficacy of Physical Modalities for Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain After Stroke: A Systematic Review. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT In adults with post-stroke shoulder pain, electrical, shock-wave, or laser modalities sometimes reduced pain, especially when added to physiotherapy. Function improved less consistently, and the evidence was very uncertain, so do not treat these as proven stand-alone therapies. PT OT SLP Cohort 2026 Functional recovery and mortality after intensive inpatient rehabilitation for severe acquired brain injury in older adults: a retrospective cohort study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Older adults after severe acquired brain injury who had swallowing problems and diabetes at admission had poorer function at discharge. Death during inpatient rehabilitation was more common in older patients. PT OT SLP Cohort 2026 Associations between interpreter dependency and rehabilitation outcomes and care processes following acquired brain injury: a Swedish registry-based cohort study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Interpreter-dependent patients started rehabilitation with lower independence and quality of life but improved at the same rate as others. However, their patient experience surveys were collected significantly less often, leaving their voices missing from routine care data. OT RCT 2026 Efficacy of a soft robotic exoskeleton for upper-limb rehabilitation in subacute stroke inpatient rehabilitation: a randomised controlled trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In subacute inpatient stroke, adding a soft robotic glove to conventional occupational therapy did not improve upper-limb outcomes more than adding supervised GRASP with wrist support to conventional occupational therapy. Both groups improved similarly. PT OT SLP RCT 2026 Transfer effects of animal-assisted therapy on socioemotional skills in adult inpatient rehabilitation after acquired brain injury: a randomized controlled trial. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences After six weeks, adults with brain injury who received animal-assisted occupational, speech, or physiotherapy showed more social behavior in a standardized outside-therapy task than usual therapy. Mood, thinking, motivation, quality of life and attendance did not differ. High dropouts mean this is not firm evidence. PT OT Survey 2026 Consumer Priorities for Upper-Extremity Outcome Assessments. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Stroke survivors and caregivers valued clinician-rated arm movement, strength and hand tasks over biomarkers or general disability. They preferred weekly in-person assessments during treatment. OT Cohort 2026 Examining the Role of Behavioral Health Factors on Inpatient Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Outcomes Among Service Members and Veterans. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Service members and veterans improved after inpatient traumatic brain injury rehab; alcohol use before admission did not appear to reduce improvement, while tobacco use was linked to slower PTSD symptom improvement. PT OT Pilot 2026 Feasibility of Behavioral Intervention and Guided Stepping Training Early Post-Stroke (BIG STEPS): A Pilot Randomized Trial. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Early stepping training after stroke was feasible and safe, with participants averaging 6534 steps/day versus 4031 in the control group at 12 weeks. This pilot supports larger trials but does not yet prove lasting functional gains. PT OT Systematic Review 2026 Clinical implementation of virtual reality in neurorehabilitation: a scoping review of barriers, facilitators, and motivational factors. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Clinicians perceived VR as a useful add-on, but adoption was uneven. Funding, training, technical support and workflow were barriers; patient motivation, peer support and management commitment helped. PT OT Case Report 2026 Ultrasound-Guided Alcohol Neurolysis for Poststroke Upper Limb Spasticity to Facilitate Arteriovenous Fistula Creation in Hemodialysis: A Case Report. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation In one dialysis-dependent stroke survivor, ultrasound-guided alcohol neurolysis of arm nerves reduced spasticity and pain and improved positioning, allowing fistula creation. It was given with stretching, orthoses, strengthening, electrical stimulation and lidocaine, so its independent effect is unclear. PT OT SLP Cohort 2026 Association Between Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)-Related Clinical Burden and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity Among Special Operations Forces (SOF): Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Inferences. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Among 105 Special Operations Forces in TBI rehab, higher baseline PTSD scores went with more brain-injury symptoms and worse daily function. But only poor daily function predicted faster PTSD improvement over time. Brain-injury symptom counts alone did not predict how PTSD changed. PT OT Other 2026 Investigating Disparities in Acute Rehabilitation Outcomes Among Individuals With TBI and SCI: A Retrospective Chart Review of UDS Data. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Insurance type predicted acute rehab outcomes for TBI and SCI patients. Publicly insured had lower discharge function than commercially insured, despite similar length of stay. Workers' compensation patients stayed longer and had higher discharge function. No differences were found for race or sex. PT OT Case Report 2026 Sequential Cryoneurolysis and Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy for Refractory Wrist Flexor Contracture: A Retrospective Case Series in Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Patients with chronic wrist flexor contracture had improved passive wrist extension after percutaneous needle tenotomy following cryoneurolysis. This small case series cannot prove benefit or separate the treatments' contributions. OT Cohort 2026 ICF Priorities and the Impact of Demographic Factors in a Paediatric Poststroke Population: An Observational Study. Child: care, health and development Priorities did not differ by sex, ethnicity or local deprivation. Post-stroke children and families most often raised everyday activities and participation. Body function and service concerns were more common in primary and high school. OT Cohort 2026 Implementing Evidence-Based Somatosensory Rehabilitation After Stroke: Reported Practice, Documented Practice, and Barriers. Occupational therapy international Occupational therapists valued stroke sensory care, but most did not use standardized assessments. Files showed sensory assessment for 14 of 26 patients with upper limb impairment, and documented treatment for 7 of 12 with sensory impairment. Time, confidence, and resources were barriers. PT OT RCT 2016 Effects of functional and analytical strength training on upper-extremity activity after stroke: a randomized controlled trial. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Five weeks of home-based functional reaching-and-grasping practice improved arm activity more than analytical dumbbell lifting in chronic stroke, and the difference was still seen at 10 months. Strength, range of motion, motor control, and tone did not differ between groups. PT OT RCT 2016 Effect of mirror therapy on upper extremity motor function in stroke patients: a randomized controlled trial. Journal of physical therapy science Mirror therapy added to conventional stroke rehabilitation improved upper extremity movement ability more than the conventional program with a non-reflecting mirror, but did not improve Brunnstrom stages or self-care independence. PT OT Systematic Review 2016 Incidence, Time Course and Predictors of Impairments Relating to Caring for the Profoundly Affected arm After Stroke: A Systematic Review. Physiotherapy research international : the journal for researchers and clinicians in physical therapy No included study predicted difficulty caring for the arm after stroke. Spasticity and pain appeared as early as 1 week, and contracture by 2 weeks. Weakness and reduced motor control predicted spasticity and contracture; reduced sensation, shoulder subluxation, weakness, and stroke severity predicted pain. PT OT Other 2016 Quantifying six-minute walk induced gait deterioration with inertial sensors in multiple sclerosis subjects. Gait & posture A hip-worn sensor detected gait deterioration in people with multiple sclerosis that walking speed missed, particularly in later minutes of the six-minute walk. This suggests two-minute tests may be too short to capture fatigue-related changes in mild cases. PT OT Case-Control 2016 Study of acceleration of center of mass during sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit in patients with stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Patients with stroke took longer and showed reduced center of mass acceleration during sit-to-stand compared to healthy controls. During stand-to-sit, only side-to-side acceleration and time differed. This suggests training should address all balance directions for standing up, but focus on side-to-side stability for sitting down. ← Previous PAGE 2 OF 56 Next →
