SLP Qualitative 2019 A Qualitative Exploration of the Female Experience of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic females and mothers described wanting friends but struggling to make or keep them, camouflaging social difficulties to fit in, and sensory overload or anxiety as major daily burdens. These are reported experiences, not tested outcomes. SLP Meta-Analysis 2019 Selection bias on intellectual ability in autism research: a cross-sectional review and meta-analysis. Molecular autism Autism research samples were mostly people without intellectual disability, so evidence may not apply to autistic patients who also have ID. SLP Survey 2019 Autism prevalence in China is comparable to Western prevalence. Molecular autism Autism prevalence in three Chinese cities was comparable to Western estimates, and mainstream schools had children with no previous diagnosis, suggesting under-diagnosis. Jilin total prevalence was 108.0 per 10,000. OT SLP Survey 2019 Flourishing in children with autism spectrum disorders. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with autism had lower parent-rated social competence and behavioral control than peers, but school motivation was similar. This helps therapists target social and regulation goals, but it does not show treatment works. SLP Qualitative 2019 Parent and Provider Perspectives on the Diagnosis and Management of Autism in a Chinese Immigrant Population. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Chinese immigrant parents and providers described autism diagnosis and service use as shaped by culture, stigma, family authority, and language barriers. Parents often saw a lively or calm child as not autistic, and trusted professionals enough to accept recommendations. SLP Other 2019 Brief Report: Sex/Gender Differences in Symptomology and Camouflaging in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 28 adults with autism, women scored higher on camouflaging than men. Self-reported symptom scores were higher, but not after the study's stricter check. Camouflaging linked to less positive emotional expression in women, not men. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Latent trajectories of adaptive behaviour in infants at high and low familial risk for autism spectrum disorder. Molecular autism Infants at high risk for autism split into three adaptive behaviour trajectories. A small group with initially high scores declined significantly and had higher autism symptom severity. Most maintained stable average skills, while another group started low and recovered to average levels by age two. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Age-related Behavioural Change in Cornelia de Lange and Cri du Chat Syndromes: A Seven Year Follow-up Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adaptive skills plateaued while receptive language improved over seven years in Cornelia de Lange and Cri du Chat syndromes. Social impairments worsened specifically in Cornelia de Lange. Individual change was highly variable, so group trends do not predict outcomes for a single patient. SLP Other 2019 Targeting IEP Social Goals for Children with Autism in an Inclusive Summer Camp. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Four children with autism improved on IEP social goals during a two-week inclusive summer camp with supervised paraprofessional support, and gains held one to three months later. SLP Cohort 2019 Student-teacher relationships of children with autism spectrum disorder: Distinct contributions of language domains. Research in developmental disabilities For children with autism, pragmatic language skills predicted how close teachers felt to them at the start of the school year, but semantic and syntactic skills did not. Teacher experience and classroom placement also influenced closeness. No language domain predicted changes in relationship quality over the year. SLP Case-Control 2019 Maternal diabetes and hypertensive disorders in association with autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Maternal diabetes was not associated with autism, while maternal hypertensive disorders were associated with autism and developmental delay in 2,564 mother-child pairs. This is an association, not proof of cause. SLP Other 2019 Linguistic markers of autism in girls: evidence of a "blended phenotype" during storytelling. Molecular autism Verbal autistic children used more nouns during storytelling. Verbal autistic girls used more thinking words than verbal autistic boys, and were similar to typical peers. SLP Survey 2019 Psychometric Validation of the Autism Impact Measure (AIM). Journal of autism and developmental disorders Caregiver reports on the AIM separated children with ASD by expected severity, including verbal versus non-verbal. It was not tested after therapy, so use it as a symptom questionnaire, not proof an intervention worked. SLP Other 2019 The role of gender in the perception of autism symptom severity and future behavioral development. Molecular autism Laypeople rating written cases did not find girls’ autism-related behaviors less worrying or less likely to need advice. They did predict boys would be seen as more atypical by peers at age 15. SLP Other 2019 Social Cognition in Autism and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Co-twin Control Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic participants were worse at inferring characters' thoughts and feelings in a social movie than typically developing peers, and also overinterpreted or underinterpreted social cues. These links held within twin pairs, including identical twins. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Atypical Response to Caregiver Touch in Infants at High Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Infants later diagnosed with autism were less likely to look at the source of a caregiver's touch and more likely to look away. This lack of attention at 12 months predicted higher autism symptom severity at follow-up. OT SLP Narrative Review 2019 Digital Media and Autism Spectrum Disorders: Review of Evidence, Theoretical Concerns, and Opportunities for Intervention. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Screen time duration often looks similar between children with ASD and typically developing school-aged children, but content, bedtime use, and calming routines may matter more. Counsel families on shared use, limits, and teaching kids to resist sticky apps. SLP Survey 2019 Relations Between Bilingualism and Autistic-Like Traits in a General Population Sample of Primary School Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In UK primary school children, speaking two languages was not linked to overall autistic-like traits. Speech, meaning and coherence skills were more closely linked to traits. A lower score in high-scoring bilinguals did not hold across the sample. SLP RCT 2019 Pediatric Prolonged-Release Melatonin for Sleep in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Impact on Child Behavior and Caregiver's Quality of Life. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism and poor sleep who took prolonged-release melatonin had fewer outward-directed behavior problems than children taking placebo after 13 weeks, and caregivers reported better wellbeing. Social withdrawal and anxiety did not change clearly in the whole group. SLP Meta-Analysis 2019 Transcriptomic metaanalyses of autistic brains reveals shared gene expression and biological pathway abnormalities with cancer. Molecular autism Autism frontal cortex gene patterns matched brain, kidney, thyroid and pancreatic cancer profiles in the same direction, and were opposite to lung and prostate cancer profiles. Shared immune, mitochondrial and PI3K pathway changes were reported. SLP Other 2019 'Who Am I?': An Exploratory Study of the Relationships Between Identity, Acculturation and Mental Health in Autistic Adolescents. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Personal identity scores did not predict mental health difficulties in autistic adolescents. Groups based on cultural alignment did not differ on mental health scores. Adolescents aligned to non-autistic culture made more positive self statements than those aligned to neither culture. SLP Other 2019 Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Among 346 speakers with eight complex neurodevelopmental disorders, 62.7% had a speech and/or motor speech disorder. Motor speech problems, including speech motor delay, dysarthria and apraxia, were common in some groups, but groups varied widely. OT SLP Other 2019 More Than IQ: Executive Function Explains Adaptive Behavior Above and Beyond Nonverbal IQ in Youth With Autism and Lower IQ. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities In 100 youth with autism and lower IQ, parent-reported monitoring of behavior and its effect on others was linked to better communication and, less strongly, socialization after accounting for age and nonverbal IQ. Daily living skills did not show this link. SLP Meta-Analysis 2019 The relation between parent verbal responsiveness and child communication in young children with or at risk for autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Parents who talk about what their toddler is already looking at are linked to better communication skills. However, teaching parents to do this did not improve the children's language in trials. Direct speech therapy is still needed to help the child. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Loss in services precedes high school exit for teens with autism spectrum disorder: A longitudinal study. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Speech therapy and occupational therapy declined before and at high school exit for young people with autism. Unmet needs rose at exit. Physical therapy changed little, and service loss differed by intellectual disability status. SLP Pilot 2019 Using Virtual Reality Environments to Augment Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Fears and Phobias in Autistic Adults. Autism in adulthood Five of eight autistic adults improved their ability to handle specific phobias after four virtual reality sessions. Three did not improve. Standardized anxiety questionnaires showed no consistent change, so the benefit was seen only in real-life functional outcomes rated by experts. SLP Narrative Review 2019 A Review of Language, Executive Function, and Intervention in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Seminars in speech and language Executive function deficits in autism are inconsistent and often depend on whether the task requires language. Social communication interventions improved executive function, while executive function interventions improved social skills. Clinicians should assess language and executive function together. SLP Other 2019 Autism Mental Status Examination (AMSE): A Valid Instrument in the Evaluation of Pre-school Children with Suspected Autism Spectrum Disorders? Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with an ICD-10 autism diagnosis scored higher on AMSE than children without an ASD diagnosis. A 7-point score was the best threshold in this small, non-blind referred sample, so it should not be used alone to diagnose. SLP Other 2019 A Spectrotemporal Correlate of Language Impairment in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Auditory brain response while hearing words and made-up words tracked language ability in children with autism and typical development. A larger response went with better language scores. Children with autism did not differ clearly from typical children. OT SLP Qualitative 2019 Mapping the Autistic Advantage from the Accounts of Adults Diagnosed with Autism: A Qualitative Study. Autism in adulthood Autistic adults described focus, memory, attention to detail and honesty as helpful, but the same traits often caused problems depending on context, control and others' views. SLP Other 2019 Examining relationships between child skills and potential key components of an evidence-based practice in ASD. Research in developmental disabilities In videos of PRT sessions, using most strategies more often was linked to better child participation and communication; turn taking was linked to worse communication. The data are concurrent and cannot show cause. SLP Cohort 2019 Incomplete silencing of full mutation alleles in males with fragile X syndrome is associated with autistic features. Molecular autism In males with fragile X full mutation only, detectable FMR1 mRNA in blood was linked to more severe autism features, especially social communication, in those under 19. It was not linked to lower intellectual functioning in the same comparison. SLP Cohort 2019 Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder May Learn from Caregiver Verb Input Better in Certain Engagement States. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Caregiver verb talk that followed the child's focus during sustained, reciprocal object play was associated with more later expressive verb vocabulary in 29 young children with ASD. The finding did not show that the talk caused the gain. SLP Case-Control 2019 Neonatal vitamin D status in relation to autism spectrum disorder and developmental delay in the CHARGE case-control study. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Neonatal vitamin D showed no link with autism overall. Higher levels were linked with less developmental delay in initial comparisons, but not after accounting for mother's education and weight before pregnancy. In girls, higher levels were linked with autism less often. SLP Other 2019 Self-reported Sensory Hypersensitivity Moderates Association Between Tactile Psychophysical Performance and Autism-Related Traits in Neurotypical Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Tactile sensitivity alone did not predict autism traits in 42 adults. But among those reporting high sensory hypersensitivity, a narrow dynamic range for detecting vibrations was associated with increased communication difficulties and broader autism-related traits. SLP Other 2019 Family Emotional Climate and Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders The largest group of families, 43%, showed high warmth and low criticism across parent-child and couple relationships. Higher child emotional and behavioral problems and parent autism-like traits were linked to more distressed family relationships. SLP Other 2019 Specificity of Phonological Representations for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Young children with autism were as affected by mispronunciations as younger typically developing children, even though they recognized words less accurately overall. SLP Cohort 2019 Reduced frontal gamma power at 24 months is associated with better expressive language in toddlers at risk for autism. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research High-risk toddlers without later ASD had lower frontal gamma power at 24 months, and lower power was linked to better expressive language. Toddlers with ASD did not differ from low-risk controls, so this single EEG measure was not a clear ASD marker. SLP Cohort 2019 Persistence of dysfunctional natural killer cells in adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders: stigma/consequence of unresolved early infectious events? Molecular autism Adults with high-functioning autism showed persistent natural killer cell activation and altered function, including links to language and social awareness scores. This is a biomarker association, not a tested treatment or clinical test. SLP Case-Control 2019 An In-Depth Analysis of Expository Writing in Children With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism wrote shorter essays with more grammar errors but used more rare words. Their overall essay quality matched peers. They struggled more with starting, staying on task, and generating ideas during the writing process. SLP Other 2019 Abnormal auditory mismatch fields are associated with communication impairment in both verbal and minimally verbal/nonverbal children who have autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with autism, especially minimally verbal/nonverbal, had slower brain responses to changed vowel sounds. Slower responses were linked to communication and nonverbal cognitive scores. This was a study finding, not evidence of a treatment target. SLP Other 2019 Differential Altered Auditory Event-Related Potential Responses in Young Boys on the Autism Spectrum With and Without Disproportionate Megalencephaly. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In an early brain response window, young boys with autism and normal brain size showed little graded brain response as sounds got louder. Boys with autism and disproportionately large brain volume, and typical boys, showed larger responses to louder sounds. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2019 A Systematic Review of What Barriers and Facilitators Prevent and Enable Physical Healthcare Services Access for Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults reported healthcare barriers including communication, sensory overload, appointments, and provider assumptions. Accommodations such as written notes, quiet waiting, and individual plans were suggested; this review does not prove any single approach works. SLP Other 2019 Blood oxytocin concentration positively predicts contagious yawning behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research No significant difference in contagious yawning was found between 34 children with autism and 30 typically developing children. Lower blood oxytocin predicted fewer contagious yawns in the autism group only. This is a biomarker association, not a treatment result. SLP Cohort 2019 Clustering of co-occurring conditions in autism spectrum disorder during early childhood: A retrospective analysis of medical claims data. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Young children with autism in claims data clustered into three groups by co-occurring medical diagnoses. All condition categories were more common than in children without autism, and 58.2% of children with autism had diagnoses in four or more categories. SLP Survey 2019 Autistic traits in adults who have attempted suicide. Molecular autism Adults who reported more than one suicide attempt scored higher on autistic traits than those reporting one attempt. When age, sex and diagnosed or suspected conditions were considered, the link was not clear. SLP Pilot 2019 Predicting aggression to others in youth with autism using a wearable biosensor. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Wearable biosensor data predicted aggression in the next minute with 84% average accuracy in 20 inpatient youth with autism, but this pilot did not test whether alerts reduce aggression. SLP Other 2019 Mechanisms of voice control related to prosody in autism spectrum disorder and first-degree relatives. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research People with autism made larger voice corrections when their feedback pitch was shifted down or up. Parents, especially those with autism-like social traits, showed similar patterns. Their voice feedback responses were atypical and related to prosody differences. SLP Other 2019 Delayed M50/M100 evoked response component latency in minimally verbal/nonverbal children who have autism spectrum disorder. Molecular autism Children with autism who have few or no words showed delayed brain responses to simple tones compared to typically developing peers. The delay was linked to poorer communication skills, suggesting these neural measures could help track language ability. SLP Case-Control 2019 Visual attention to faces in children with autism spectrum disorder: are there sex differences? Molecular autism Boys with autism looked less at faces than boys without autism in both play scenes. Girls with autism looked less than girls without autism only when children interacted, and more than boys with autism when they played side by side. ← Previous PAGE 12 OF 56 Next →
