Mapping the Autistic Advantage from the Accounts of Adults Diagnosed with Autism: A Qualitative Study.

Ginny Russell, Steven K Kapp, Daisy Elliott and 3 others

PMID 31058260

WHAT IT FOUND

Autistic adults described focus, memory, attention to detail and honesty as helpful, but the same traits often caused problems depending on context, control and others' views.

Key findings

01Most participants talked about autism as a set of qualities they possessed rather than an illness they had.

02Participants described traits including memory, focus, attention to detail, logic and vivid imagination, while also describing these traits as advantageous and disadvantageous in work, relationships and home.

03Whether a trait helped depended on social context, control and perspective.

What it does not show

The study had 24 adults, a small purposive sample, so the themes are not a measurement of how common these traits are. The sample lacked severely intellectually and language-impaired participants, so it may not reflect autistic adults who are nonverbal or need high support in communication and daily living. Participants were recruited through autism homes, skills-training centres and autism groups, so the accounts come from people connected to those settings. The study did not test an intervention, so it cannot show that any treatment preserves strengths or reduces harm. Researchers interpreted participants' accounts through their own concepts, and coding was done by two researchers, so the themes reflect their analysis. The small support-level groups were not meant for comparison, so differences between low, mid and high support were not examined.

The easy way to misread this

Do not read this as proof that autism is an advantage or that a therapy can keep strengths while removing difficulties. The study collected accounts from 24 adults and did not test any treatment.
