SLP Other 2019 Social-emotional processing in nonverbal individuals with Angelman syndrome: evidence from brain responses to known and novel names. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Brain responses did not show clear recognition of known names in 11 nonverbal people with Angelman syndrome. Better brain differentiation of repeated stranger names from unknown names was linked to caregiver-reported communication and socialization, but this was secondary. SLP Case-Control 2019 Infections in children with autism spectrum disorder: Study to Explore Early Development (SEED). Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Compared with typically developing children, children with autism were more likely to have infection in the neonatal period and first three years. Compared with children with other developmental delays, only neonatal infection differed. This is an association, not proof of cause. SLP Other 2018 Social difficulties in youth with autism with and without anxiety and ADHD symptoms. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Adolescents with autism and elevated anxiety or ADHD symptoms scored higher on parent-reported autism severity than those with autism alone. This does not prove they have more core autism traits. It may mean the questionnaire picks up distress and inattention, inflating scores. SLP Survey 2019 Healthcare access and services use among US children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice 29.0% of U.S. children with ASD had trouble getting healthcare, often delays. These problems were associated with fewer well-child visits and more emergency visits, but not flu shots. SLP Qualitative 2019 'People like me don't get support': Autistic adults' experiences of support and treatment for mental health difficulties, self-injury and suicidality. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults said mental health support was often hard to get and rarely adapted to them. They felt dismissed as coping, faced long waits, and met professionals with little autism knowledge. Tailored, consistent support was described as helpful for well-being and safety. SLP Cohort 2019 Parents' Use of Internal State Language with Toddlers at High and Low Genetic Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of toddlers later diagnosed with autism used similar amounts of emotion words when reading, but tried less often to get the child to talk about feelings. These toddlers lagged behind peers in using internal state words by 28 months. OT SLP Case-Control 2018 Aberrant functional connectivity of neural circuits associated with social and sensorimotor deficits in young children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Brain scans under sedation showed weaker links in social/language networks and stronger links in sensorimotor/visual networks in 29 children with autism and 29 matched controls. These patterns tracked social and repetitive behavior scores, but did not test therapy. SLP Pilot 2018 A pilot dose finding study of pioglitazone in autistic children. Molecular autism In 28 autistic children, pioglitazone at 0.75 mg/kg was tolerated without serious adverse events; parent and clinician ratings improved on several behavior scales, but without a control group this cannot show the drug worked. SLP Cohort 2018 Coordination is key: Joint attention and vocalisation in infant siblings of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. International journal of language & communication disorders High-risk infants later diagnosed with ASD showed less advanced joint attention, such as showing and pointing, no age-related change in vocal development, and rarely paired sounds with these behaviours. Low-level request behaviours did not differ. SLP Pilot 2019 Brief Report: Evaluating the Utility of Varied Technological Agents to Elicit Social Attention from Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with ASD looked less than peers after simple 'Hey!' bids from robots, an avatar, or a human. Within ASD, the simple robot and screen avatar drew more looks than the human or the human-like robot. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2019 Are Children Severely Affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder Underrepresented in Treatment Studies? An Analysis of the Literature. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autism treatment studies increasingly exclude severely affected children. Communication ability is rarely reported, and when it is, dozens of different measures are used. This makes it difficult to know if published trials actually apply to non-verbal or intellectually disabled patients. SLP Cohort 2019 Autism Spectrum Disorder: Incidence and Time Trends Over Two Decades in a Population-Based Birth Cohort. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Clinically diagnosed autism kept increasing through 2004, while research-defined autism symptoms plateaued after the late 1990s. This pattern was not consistent with a continued rise in true autism symptoms. SLP Survey 2019 An International Survey of Parental Attitudes to Technology Use by Their Autistic Children at Home. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of 388 autistic children and adults reported mainstream tablets and computers at home. Autism-specific apps were rare, and only 5 families reported access to communication devices. Ask what devices and apps families already use before assuming communication technology is in place. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Early emergence of discrepancy in adaptive behavior and cognitive skills in toddlers with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Toddlers with autism or subthreshold autism features and average nonverbal cognition increasingly scored below average on adaptive socialization and daily living by 36 months, while cognitive scores stayed stable. The gap appeared early. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Growth mixture models of adaptive behavior in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Most high school students with autism showed teacher-reported gains in communication, daily living, and socialization, but their scores stayed below age expectations. Students in programs rated higher for independence were more likely to be in the improving groups. SLP Other 2019 Atypicalities of Gesture Form and Function in Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Verbally fluent autistic adults used co-speech gestures differently from controls: more turn-taking gestures, more gestures coders interpreted less confidently, and more single-handed gestures. Gesture size and added information did not differ. SLP Cohort 2019 A population-based examination of maltreatment referrals and substantiation for children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Substantiated maltreatment was similar overall: 3.9% of children with autism and 3.4% of controls. Referrals were higher: 17.3% versus 7.4%. Many autism referrals were screened out before further action. SLP Cohort 2019 Brief Report: Challenging Behaviors in Toddlers and Preschoolers with Angelman, Prader-Willi, and Williams Syndromes. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents reported toddlers and preschoolers with Angelman or Williams syndromes had more overall behavior concerns than comparison children, especially attention, withdrawal, and autism spectrum problems. Prader-Willi toddlers looked similar to comparison children overall. SLP Other 2019 PAC1R Genotype to Phenotype Correlations in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In children with ASD, the CC genotype was linked to more ADI-R reciprocal-social difficulty than GC. In a small brain-scan subset, CC showed stronger connectivity between the amygdala and a motion-processing region. This is an exploratory genetic finding, not a treatment result. SLP Other 2019 The use of demonstratives and personal pronouns in fragile X syndrome and autism spectrum disorder. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Boys with fragile X and autism used more words like this and that in concrete and appropriate ways than boys with idiopathic autism, but pronoun use did not differ. Grammar and autism severity related differently to these words in each group. SLP Other 2019 Beyond pass-fail: Examining the potential utility of two thresholds in the autism screening process. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Using two STAT thresholds in a risk-score model sorted 54% of referred toddlers into very likely or very unlikely ASD groups, but overall three scoring methods performed similarly. PT OT SLP Other 2019 Validation of the Simplified Chinese Psychoeducational Profile Third Edition in Mainland China. Journal of autism and developmental disorders After Mandarin and everyday-item changes, the Simplified Chinese PEP-3 gave stable scores and was related to other child-development measures, so it can help therapists profile strengths and weaknesses in Mandarin-speaking children with ASD in mainland China. It does not prove treatment works. SLP Systematic Review 2019 Systematic Review of the Relationship Between Autism Stigma and Informal Caregiver Mental Health. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Across twelve studies, autism stigma was consistently linked to depression, anxiety and poor wellbeing in caregivers. Rejection from family and friends hurt more than public judgement. Mindfulness and self-compassion buffered these effects. OT SLP Survey 2019 Treatment patterns in children with autism in the United States. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Most US children with autism received several non-drug therapies, with speech therapy the most common and usually school-based. Rural residence was linked to less therapy and lower intensity; insurance type was not consistently linked to therapy. SLP Cohort 2019 Shifting Preferences for Primate Faces in Neurotypical Infants and Infants Later Diagnosed With ASD. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Infants later diagnosed with ASD looked longer at human faces than non-faces at 6 months, unlike neurotypical infants, who also looked longer at monkey faces. The ASD group's preference for primate faces declined by 18 months. This is an eye-tracking pattern, not a clinical screen. SLP Cohort 2018 Inherited and multiple de novo mutations in autism/developmental delay risk genes suggest a multifactorial model. Molecular autism Many autism risk genes were identified, multiple new mutations occurred in some patients, and inherited mutations had milder parent traits. This supports a multifactorial model, not one-gene explanations, and gives no tested therapy change. SLP Case-Control 2019 Maternal Pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index and Gestational Weight Gain in Relation to Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Developmental Disorders in Offspring. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Higher gestational weight gain was linked to ASD, while pre-pregnancy obesity showed no clear link after accounting for other factors. Maternal overweight or obesity was linked to developmental delay, a group that included speech delay. OT SLP Narrative Review 2018 Changing Developmental Trajectories of Toddlers With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Strategies for Bridging Research to Community Practice. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR In toddlers with autism, a parent-implemented model combining coaching, routines, communication targets, and instruction produced greater gains in engagement and communication than weekly group support. The paper did not isolate which parts mattered. SLP Case-Control 2018 Functional MRI connectivity of children with autism and low verbal and cognitive performance. Molecular autism Children with autism and very low verbal and cognitive performance can complete MRI scanning without sedation using video, noise reduction, comfort items, and parent contact. Their scans showed lower connections inside some networks than higher-functioning autistic children, and higher between some networks than typical children. SLP Other 2019 Cross-Cultural Content Validity of the Autism Program Environment Rating Scale in Sweden. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Nine Swedish experts rated the adapted APERS-P-SE as clear, comprehensive and relevant for assessing preschool program quality for children with ASD. Practical use scored lowest, and further work is needed to see how it performs in use. SLP Other 2019 The stability of joint engagement states in infant siblings of children with and without ASD: Implications for measurement practices. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Measuring joint engagement depends on group and state. In siblings of children with ASD, more reciprocal play needed 4 sessions; less needed 1. In other siblings, more needed 2 sessions and less needed 7 sessions and 2 coders. SLP Other 2019 A novel method for measuring learning opportunities provided by parents to young children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice A new video coding method counts how often parents turn play into teaching moments. Higher counts correlated with better child language and cognition scores 12 weeks later, but not with autism symptom severity. The study shows the method works; it does not prove that more teaching moments cause progress. SLP Meta-Analysis 2019 Toddler Screening for Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Diagnostic Accuracy. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Pooled toddler autism screening tools identified 0.72 of children with ASD and cleared 0.98 of children without ASD. A negative screen should not rule out autism. SLP Survey 2019 Understanding the Reasons, Contexts and Costs of Camouflaging for Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults who camouflaged in both formal and personal settings, or who switched between settings, reported more stress than those who camouflaged little. Those who camouflaged highly in both settings also reported more anxiety than those who camouflaged little. No depression difference was found. SLP Cohort 2019 Dyadic interactions in children exhibiting the broader autism phenotype: Is the broader autism phenotype distinguishable from typical development? Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with the broader autism phenotype showed lower scores on language and social measures by 24 months. Global play ratings detected these differences earlier than detailed second-by-second coding. These social markers emerged by 15 months, offering potential targets for early intervention. SLP Cohort 2019 Early Predictors of Later Expressive Language in Boys With Fragile X Syndrome. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Early consonant diversity predicted later vocabulary size in boys with Fragile X Syndrome, but this link depended heavily on autism symptom severity. Boys with high autism symptoms and low early consonant counts had the smallest later vocabularies, while high consonant counts buffered this effect. SLP Other 2019 How effective is LENA in detecting speech vocalizations and language produced by children and adolescents with ASD in different contexts? Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research LENA did not reliably detect speech from children and adolescents with autism aged 5 to 18. It missed many child utterances and often labelled them as adult speech, especially in older participants and when the recorder was not worn. SLP Cohort 2019 Social complexity and the early social environment affect visual social attention to faces. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research High-risk and low-risk infants did not differ overall in looking at faces. In the simple cartoon clip, higher parental autism-related traits were linked to slower increases in face-looking. More face-looking tracked lower later social symptoms in high-risk infants. SLP Cohort 2019 A 20-year study of suicide death in a statewide autism population. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Suicide deaths were more common among people with ASD than without in the most recent period, especially females. Earlier years showed no difference. People with ASD who died by suicide were younger. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Investigating the factors underlying adaptive functioning in autism in the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research For autistic people aged 6 to 31, parent-reported social difficulties were linked to poorer everyday adaptive skills and bigger gaps between IQ and daily functioning. Repetitive behaviours, sensory symptoms, anxiety, depression, and ADHD were not linked when other factors were considered. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Fifteen-Year Prospective Follow-Up Study of Adult Outcomes of Autism Spectrum Disorders Among Children Attending Centers in Five Regional Departments in France: The EpiTED Cohort. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Most children with ASD in this French follow-up still had very slow growth in communication, socialization and daily living skills by young adulthood. Early autism severity and intellectual level predicted later adaptive outcomes, and language impairment was linked to self-injury. OT SLP Other 2019 Stop Making Noise! Auditory Sensitivity in Adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis: Physiological Habituation and Subjective Detection Thresholds. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adults with autism and adults without autism did not differ in how their sweat response settled to repeated sounds or in hearing thresholds. Adults with autism reported more auditory sensitivity and rated sounds more arousing. PT OT SLP Other 2019 What Drives Detection and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder? Looking Under the Hood of a Multi-stage Screening Process in Early Intervention. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Referring children for autism assessment based on provider or parent concern, even when screening scores are negative, found more diagnoses per staff hour than relying on positive scores alone. Concern was the stronger driver of engagement and diagnosis than the test results. SLP Cohort 2019 Autism With and Without Regression: A Two-Year Prospective Longitudinal Study in Two Population-Derived Swedish Cohorts. Journal of autism and developmental disorders About one in five children with autism had lost words they already used. These children had more severe language and thinking difficulties, so ask parents about earlier words and plan detailed follow-up. SLP Case-Control 2019 Similarities in Functional Play and Differences in Symbolic Play of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Children with autism showed similar everyday toy use and interest in different toys as matched peers, but less pretend play, especially having a doll act on objects. SLP Case-Control 2019 ASD Screening with the Child Behavior Checklist/1.5-5 in the Study to Explore Early Development. Journal of autism and developmental disorders A CBCL/1.5-5 autism-scale score of 65 or higher flagged 0.80 of children with ASD, but it correctly did not flag only 0.50 of children with developmental delays who also had ASD features. SLP Cohort 2019 Preschool Staff Spot Social Communication Difficulties, But Not Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors in Young Autistic Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Preschool staff accurately identified social communication difficulties in young autistic children, matching clinical assessments. However, they failed to distinguish restricted and repetitive behaviors between groups. Relying on teacher reports for these specific behaviors is unreliable; direct clinical observation is required. SLP Cohort 2019 Criminal Behavior and School Discipline in Juvenile Justice-Involved Youth with Autism. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Justice-involved youth with autism had fewer property offenses, fewer school policy violations, and fewer suspensions than matched groups. Recidivism rates were similar, but prior school fighting was associated with higher recidivism risk. SLP Case-Control 2019 Lower circulating endocannabinoid levels in children with autism spectrum disorder. Molecular autism Children with autism spectrum disorder had lower serum AEA, OEA, and PEA levels than matched controls. The levels did not relate to symptom severity, adaptive behavior, ADHD, epilepsy, or medication use. SLP Other 2019 Psychometric Evaluation of Social Cognitive Measures for Adults with Autism. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Two tests of understanding what others think were the best at separating adults with autism from typically developing adults. Several face and emotion tests also helped, but a cartoon test, a point-light motion test and a trustworthiness test did not separate the groups. ← Previous PAGE 11 OF 56 Next →
