SLP Other 2018 Mobile technology use and skills among individuals with fragile X syndrome: implications for healthcare decision making. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Parents of individuals with fragile X syndrome reported high device ownership and frequent online health information seeking. In-person assessments showed six adults could use basic tablet functions with prompting, but advanced navigation and typing proved difficult. Engagement was moderate for assessment tasks and high for familiar free-play apps. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2018 Comparison of maternal beliefs about causes of autism spectrum disorder and association with utilization of services and treatments. Child: care, health and development Mothers’ causal beliefs were linked to service use. Believing environmental, vaccine, or medication causes was linked to more complementary and alternative medicine, and not knowing a cause was linked to more conventional medication. Ask families what they believe. SLP Pilot 2019 Autism at a glance: A pilot study optimizing thin-slice observations. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Short 2-minute play videos rated by five people produced stable scores linked to autism severity and language. The method was not ready to identify autism on its own. SLP Cohort 2019 Autism spectrum disorder symptoms from ages 2 to 19 years: Implications for diagnosing adolescents and young adults. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Caregiver-reported social-communication symptoms often decreased from age 2 to 19, especially when phrase speech emerged. Minimally verbal participants improved less, and facial expression problems persisted. Caregiver interview scores may miss adult ASD symptoms. SLP Other 2019 Toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder Can Use Language to Update Their Expectations About the World. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Toddlers with autism looked longer when an animal moved contrary to what they had just heard, like typical toddlers. In a simple eye-tracking task, spoken cues could update expectations about a hidden scene. SLP Qualitative 2019 Neurodivergent intersubjectivity: Distinctive features of how autistic people create shared understanding. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults playing video games together often shifted topics and assumed shared cultural references. These moves could fragment conversation, but also build humour and rapport quickly. Apparent miscoordination may be a different way of relating. SLP Cohort 2018 Oral microbiome activity in children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Saliva microbial activity differed between children with autism and typical or developmentally delayed children. Some patterns tracked communication and gut problems, not ADHD or daily living. This is an association, not a test of treatment. SLP Cohort 2018 The autism spectrum phenotype in ADNP syndrome. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In ADNP syndrome, all eleven participants had intellectual disability, but only seven met autism criteria. Social communication severity tracked verbal IQ, and repetitive sensory-motor behavior stood out. SLP Case-Control 2019 Brief Report: Maternal Opioid Prescription from Preconception Through Pregnancy and the Odds of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Autism Features in Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mothers with an opioid prescription before conception in this study were more likely to have a child with autism or autism features than mothers without one. Prescriptions during pregnancy did not show a clear association. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Longitudinal assessment of stability of sensory features in children with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Some sensory problems eased over time, but children with more severe problems at the first visit usually stayed relatively worse. More occupational, speech-language, or total therapy hours were linked to worse later sensory problems, not better. SLP Systematic Review 2019 Telehealth as a Model for Providing Behaviour Analytic Interventions to Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Across 28 studies, telehealth training for parents and staff delivering behaviour analytic interventions to children with autism showed improvements in many studies, but quality was weak and the review did not call it evidence-based practice. SLP Case-Control 2019 Task Dependency When Evaluating Association Between Facial Emotion Recognition and Facial Emotion Expression in Children with ASD. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with ASD recognized emotions less accurately and made more atypical facial expressions than peers. For children with ASD, recognition ability related to expression for named emotions, but not for human faces or scenes. OT SLP Survey 2019 University Students with Autism: The Social and Academic Experiences of University in the UK. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic university students in the UK reported more social and academic difficulties than non-autistic peers, including thoughts of withdrawal. Many still described academic strengths and wanted friendships. These are self-reported experiences, not evidence that any support works. SLP Cohort 2019 Resistance to temptation in toddlers at genetic risk for autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Toddlers later diagnosed with autism showed less ability to resist touching a forbidden toy. At 28 months none of them resisted, while about 40% of other toddlers did; at 34 months 20% resisted, versus 73% low-risk and 64% high-risk-no-diagnosis toddlers. SLP Other 2018 Behavioral predictors of improved speech output in minimally verbal children with autism. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Minimally verbal children with autism who could imitate more speech sounds at baseline showed more improvement in speech after 25 therapy sessions. Singing plus drum-tapping improved more than speech repetition therapy. SLP RCT 2018 The impact of robotic intervention on joint attention in children with autism spectrum disorders. Molecular autism Children with autism showed more joint attention when prompted by a small robot with moving eyes than by a person in a brief lab task. After the robot session, some also improved with a person. This was a brief session, not therapy. PT SLP Other 2018 Trends in documented co-occurring conditions in children with autism spectrum disorder, 2002-2010. Research in developmental disabilities Documented co-occurring conditions in children with ASD rose from 2002 to 2010, especially language disorder and motor developmental disability, while intellectual disability decreased. The authors say this may reflect more conditions being documented or diagnosed. SLP Other 2019 Do Beliefs About Whether Others Can See Modulate Social Seeking in Autism? Journal of autism and developmental disorders Typical adults chose to watch videos of people who could see them more often than those who could not. Autistic adults showed no such preference. This suggests reduced social motivation in autism is not due to avoiding eye shapes, but to not finding the belief that someone can see rewarding. SLP Other 2019 Sensitivity and Specificity of the ADOS-2 Algorithm in a Large German Sample. Journal of autism and developmental disorders ADOS-2 and ADOS performed similarly in most comparisons, but Module 1 had poor specificity. Adding SCQ and SRS improved Module 4 autism versus non-ASD classification, not Module 3. SLP Survey 2019 Delayed autism spectrum disorder recognition in children and adolescents previously diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Children and adolescents with autism who had ADHD first were diagnosed with autism later, and girls showed a larger delay. Adults with prior ADHD did not show this timing difference. SLP Cohort 2018 Fetal and Infancy Growth Pattern, Cord and Early Childhood Plasma Leptin, and Development of Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Boston Birth Cohort. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Extremely rapid infancy weight gain and higher early childhood leptin were associated with later autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, while cord leptin and being small or large for gestational age were not. OT SLP Cohort 2018 Infant quantitative risk for autism spectrum disorder predicts executive function in early childhood. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research At 3.5 years, children whose parents reported more sensory-regulatory behaviors at 12 months showed more parent-reported executive-function difficulties. This remained after accounting for later ASD symptoms. Social-communication risk did not. SLP Cohort 2019 Stability of Autistic Traits from 5 to 8 Years of Age Among Children in the General Population. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mean autistic trait scores showed no significant change from age 5 to 8. Still, children tended to keep their relative position, and higher-scoring children showed moderate stability. SLP Case-Control 2019 Signing with the Face: Emotional Expression in Narrative Production in Deaf Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Deaf children with autism produced a similar total number of facial actions to deaf controls, but fewer exactly matched adult signers, especially for demand and mischief. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Clinical correlates of sluggish cognitive tempo in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice In adolescents with autism, sluggish cognitive tempo symptoms were linked to higher autism severity and more anxiety or depression. Attention-deficit symptoms were linked to more rule-breaking. Both were linked to daily executive function problems, but sluggish tempo specifically related to planning and memory. SLP Cohort 2018 In Search of Biomarkers for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In 38 high-functioning men with autism, no single measure stood out as a ready-made biomarker for social communication. SCIT, ASR, RMET and smell tests related to clinician ratings, but most links were modest and varied by test. SLP Other 2019 Development of a Brief Parent-Report Screen for Common Gastrointestinal Disorders in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders A 17-item parent report caught 83.6% of children with at least one GI disorder, but only 43.4% of children without one were correctly screened negative. It is not yet validated and does not diagnose constipation, diarrhea, or reflux. SLP Other 2019 Measuring treatment response in children with autism spectrum disorder: Applications of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change to the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule. Autism : the international journal of research and practice The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change scoring method applied to standard ADOS videos detected social communication changes in minimally verbal children with autism spectrum disorder over months. Routine ADOS severity scores did not. This is about measurement, not proof that treatment worked. SLP Case-Control 2019 Neural self-representation in autistic women and association with 'compensatory camouflaging'. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic women did not show the reduced brain activity for thinking about themselves seen in autistic men. In autistic women, stronger activity for thinking about themselves went with more camouflaging, or masking autistic traits. SLP Other 2018 Savant syndrome has a distinct psychological profile in autism. Molecular autism Autistic adults with savant skills reported more sensory, obsessional and systemising traits than autistic adults without them. They did not differ on social or communication traits. SLP Case-Control 2018 Links between looking and speaking in autism and first-degree relatives: insights into the expression of genetic liability to autism. Molecular autism People with autism and their parents show slower naming and different eye movement patterns during a rapid naming task. These basic language processing differences link to repetitive behaviors and narrative ability, suggesting they may reflect underlying genetic risk for autism. SLP Other 2019 Development and Validation of the Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q). Journal of autism and developmental disorders A 25-item self-report camouflaging questionnaire measured three behaviours in autistic and non-autistic adults: learning social skills, hiding autistic traits, and forcing yourself to fit in. Higher total scores were linked to anxiety, depression in autistic adults, and lower wellbeing. SLP Other 2019 Perception of Cry Characteristics in 1-Month-Old Infants Later Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mothers rated four one-month-old cries from infants later diagnosed with autism as more distressing, less typical, and more painful than matched control cries. Parent group did not change ratings. Only four autism cries were studied, so this is not a screening tool. SLP RCT 2019 Therapists' Adaptations to an Intervention to Reduce Challenging Behaviors in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Publicly Funded Mental Health Services. Journal of autism and developmental disorders 95% of therapists made adaptations while delivering AIM HI to children with autism. They commonly changed language, slowed the pace, added other approaches, and involved teachers. The study did not show whether these adaptations improved challenging behavior. SLP Survey 2019 Mock Juror Perceptions of Credibility and Culpability in an Autistic Defendant. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mock jurors who were told the defendant had ASD and how it affected him rated him more honest and less blameworthy. They were more likely to choose not guilty and, when choosing guilty, more lenient in sentencing attitudes. Cognitive functioning ratings did not differ. SLP Other 2019 Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children with Low Mental Age. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In toddlers with autism functioning below a 12-month level, the ADOS often over-classified autism, while the CARS agreed more closely with clinical judgment. Early social behaviors like eye contact, name response, and joint attention helped separate autism from global delay. SLP Other 2019 The games they play: Observations of children with autism spectrum disorder on the school playground. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Fifty-five children with ASD spent 25% of observed recess and lunch time alone and 30% with peers. Most initiations and responses were successful. Self-stimulation was infrequent, mainly when alone. OT SLP Other 2019 ASD Comorbidity in Fragile X Syndrome: Symptom Profile and Predictors of Symptom Severity in Adolescent and Young Adult Males. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In adolescent and young adult males with fragile X syndrome, weaker sentence construction was associated with more severe autism symptoms, especially social communication symptoms. Repetitive behaviors were associated with nonverbal IQ and anxiety, avoidance, or hyperactivity. SLP Other 2019 Thinking Ahead: Incremental Language Processing is Associated with Receptive Language Abilities in Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Preschoolers with autism who had stronger receptive language looked to the named picture earlier when a verb hinted what noun was coming. The link was twice as strong when the verb gave a clue than when it did not. SLP Cohort 2019 Parental criticism and behavior problems in children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Parental criticism linked to behavior problems in children with autism, but the effect depended on context. Criticism predicted internalizing issues only when parental warmth was moderate, not high. It predicted externalizing issues only in children with moderate or high physiological stress reactivity. SLP Other 2018 Sex differences in social attention in autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research School-aged girls with autism looked at faces more than boys with autism when trains and other objects were shown. Reduced looking at faces in autism may describe boys more than girls. SLP Qualitative 2019 Parent and professional perspectives on behavioral inflexibility in autism spectrum disorders: A qualitative study. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Parents and clinicians described behavioral inflexibility in children with autism as changing with context and age. They said routines, advance planning, and family flexibility helped, while unexpected changes could trigger distress. SLP Other 2019 Motion-Capture Patterns of Voluntarily Mimicked Dynamic Facial Expressions in Children and Adolescents With and Without ASD. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with ASD copied positive and negative faces with similar overall facial movement, while children without ASD moved more for positive faces. In the ASD group, high-intensity copies often peaked briefly rather than being sustained. SLP Other 2019 Anxiety and Interpretation of Ambiguity in Autistic Children, Typical Children and Their Mothers. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic children and typical children reported similar anxiety and similar interpretations of ambiguous situations. Mothers of autistic children reported more anxiety in themselves and in their children than mothers of typical children did, and saw their children as more threatened, distressed and avoidant. SLP Cohort 2019 Effects of Delay, Question Type, and Socioemotional Support on Episodic Memory Retrieval by Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism produced fewer details than peers when asked open-ended questions but remained highly accurate. Cued invitations, which refocus on details the child already mentioned, elicited the most information. Supportive comments increased details at the two-week interview but not at two months. SLP Other 2018 A cross-cultural study of autistic traits across India, Japan and the UK. Molecular autism Five social communication items identified children with autism from typically developing controls across India, Japan and the UK. Four items about spontaneity, talking over others, jokes and social occasions varied by country, so translated screening questions may need checking. SLP Other 2019 Prevalence and Predictors of Anxiety Disorders in Adolescent and Adult Males with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Fragile X Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Overall anxiety disorder rates did not differ significantly between males with non-syndromic ASD and males with FXS. The rate was 51.6% in FXS and 50.0% in ASD. Nonverbal ability and ASD severity did not help identify who had anxiety. SLP Other 2019 Social Conformity in Autism. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults conformed to incorrect group answers just as often as neurotypical adults. They also maintained these false beliefs after learning the group was wrong, showing no difference in susceptibility to social influence. SLP Cohort 2019 Sex Differences in Social Attention in Infants at Risk for Autism. Journal of autism and developmental disorders At 10 months, infant siblings of autistic children did not differ from controls in overall looking at eyes or mouth of happy and fearful faces. The pattern differed by sex: male siblings looked more at mouths than male controls, female siblings less than female controls. SLP Cohort 2019 Spotting Signs of Autism in 3-Year-Olds: Comparing Information from Parents and Preschool Staff. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Preschool staff reports separated 3-year-olds with autism from high-risk siblings without autism and low-risk controls better than parent reports. Staff reports also matched clinical autism observation more closely, but two of 10 children with autism were missed. ← Previous PAGE 10 OF 56 Next →
