SLP Other 2024 A Preliminary Study Characterizing Subcortical and Cortical Auditory Processing and Their Relation to Autistic Traits and Sensory Features. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Brainstem responses to repeated speech sounds did not differ between autistic and typically developing children matched on age and non-verbal reasoning. Autistic children had larger early brain responses to speech sounds and faster responses to a change between sounds. SLP Cohort 2024 The association between longitudinal declines in speech sound accuracy and speech intelligibility in speakers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Clinical linguistics & phonetics In 21 speakers with ALS, intelligibility dropped sharply when phoneme accuracy fell below 75%. Consonant errors hurt intelligibility more than vowel errors, especially for fricatives and affricates. For those already below 75% accuracy, improving phoneme scores may not help intelligibility. SLP Qualitative 2023 Capability of Children with Hearing Devices: A Mixed Methods Study. Journal of deaf studies and deaf education In interviews, 34 children with hearing devices described doing many of the same things as 30 typical hearing peers, but needed devices, family support, school settings, and acceptance to keep doing them. SLP Narrative Review 2023 Using Complex Networks in the Hearing Sciences. Ear and hearing Spoken word recognition depends partly on how words are linked in the word store. Words with less interconnected similar-sounding neighbors were recognized faster and more accurately. The paper suggests network-based hearing test development, but does not show better outcomes. SLP Cohort 2023 Predictors of Susceptibility to Noise and Speech Masking Among School-Age Children With Hearing Loss or Typical Hearing. Ear and hearing Children with hearing loss understood speech in noise worse than peers with normal hearing, even with hearing aids on. Vocabulary predicted how well they did in steady background noise. Attention predicted how well children with normal hearing did when competing talkers were present, but it did not predict performance in children with hearing loss. SLP Narrative Review 2023 Neurocomputational modeling of speech motor development. Journal of child language No patient outcomes are reported. The paper describes computational models of speech motor development, not tested therapies. There is nothing here to change practice. SLP Other 2023 Intelligibility in Context Scale: Growth Curves for Typically Developing English-Speaking Children Between Ages 2;6 and 9;11. American journal of speech-language pathology Typically developing children's parent-rated intelligibility scores rise slowly with age, reaching a ceiling of 5 by 6;6. Children aged 6 and older scoring below 4 warrant a comprehensive speech evaluation, while younger children scoring 3 or 4 may just need monitoring. SLP Survey 2024 Towards a core outcome set for dysarthria after stroke: What should we measure? Clinical rehabilitation For post-stroke dysarthria, stroke survivors, speech-language therapists and researchers agreed four outcome domains to measure: intelligibility, conversation participation, living well, and, where relevant, communication partner skills. SLP Other 2023 Supporting Culturally Responsive Assessment Practices With Preschoolers: Guidance From Methods in the Jamaican Context. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Adapting standardized tests to include Jamaican Creole features reduced the identification of language disorder in bilingual preschoolers from 48.9% to 7.4%. Using adult community models for scoring prevented misdiagnosis of dialect differences as disorders. SLP Other 2024 The Contribution of Perceptual Reasoning Skills to Phonological Awareness for School Age Autistic Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders School-age autistic children matched for cognitive skills scored similarly to non-autistic peers on phonological awareness. For autistic children, phonological awareness correlated with perceptual reasoning skills, not verbal skills. This suggests using visual and perceptual strengths in literacy instruction. SLP Case Report 2023 Orofacial myofunctional therapy associated with the use of the stimulating palatal plate in children with trisomy 21: case studies. CoDAS Four children with trisomy 21 given a palatal plate, orofacial exercises, feeding and habit guidance spent less time with severe tongue protrusion after 6 months. Lip posture varied, and the components cannot be separated. SLP Other 2023 The Korean Speech Recognition Sentences: A Large Corpus for Evaluating Semantic Context and Language Experience in Speech Perception. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Korean sentences with strong semantic context were understood more easily than neutral ones by both native and non-native speakers. Late learners benefited from context just as much as natives, but struggled more as background noise increased. SLP Cohort 2023 Language sample analysis of conversation samples from school-age children who stutter: The role of syntactic factors in stuttering. Journal of communication disorders School-age children who stutter used more complex sentence structures in shorter conversation samples than fluent peers. Higher syntactic complexity was associated with more stuttering. This suggests clinicians should assess language ability with caution, as stuttering itself may limit the sample size and complexity observed. SLP RCT 2023 Efficacy in the use of gamification strategy in phonological therapy. CoDAS In children with phonological disorder, adding a computer game to phonological therapy did not improve target sound accuracy or reduce sessions compared with traditional therapy. Both groups improved, but the traditional group started with higher consonant scores. SLP Other 2023 Characterization of the phonological system in low-income Brazilian preschoolers. CoDAS Low-income preschoolers in Northeast Brazil showed typical phonological development, with consonant accuracy above diagnostic cutoffs. However, five children displayed liquid simplification, which is atypical for this age. Regional dialect variations in consonant production were common and should not be mistaken for speech sound disorders. SLP Other 2023 Multisensory effects of mask wearing on speech intelligibility and the benefit of multilingualism. CoDAS Wearing a surgical mask in noisy environments severely reduces speech intelligibility, making it as difficult to understand as losing the visual cues of the speaker's face. Seeing the speaker's eyes and forehead helps, but does not fully compensate for the mask's acoustic filtering. SLP Cohort 2024 Effects of Speaking Rate on Variability of Second Formant Frequency Transitions in Dysarthria. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Measuring how much second formant slopes vary from repetition to repetition, rather than just averaging them, better identified ataxic dysarthria and correlated with intelligibility. Averaged slopes were better at identifying hypokinetic dysarthria. Speaking rate changes revealed these differences. SLP Other 2023 Phonological Assessment Instrument: evidence of content validity and response processes. CoDAS Most words in this speech test were easy for children to name spontaneously, but seven items caused confusion or required heavy prompting. Experts agreed the test content is suitable for assessing children's speech, though some words need changing. SLP Protocol 2023 Assessment protocol for acquired apraxia of speech. CoDAS A draft Brazilian Portuguese acquired apraxia of speech protocol was built from controlled word lists and standard tasks, but it has not yet been tested in patients or healthy speakers. SLP Other 2023 Pupil Dilation Reflects Perceptual Priorities During a Receptive Speech Task. Ear and hearing In this lab study, pupils dilated more when listening to clear speech than casual speech in quiet, contrary to expectations. Background noise caused much larger pupil dilation than speech style. Results suggest motivation and task demands drive effort more than acoustic clarity alone. SLP Systematic Review 2024 Characterizing Speech Phenotype in Individuals With Craniofacial Microsomia: A Scoping Review. American journal of speech-language pathology Speech issues in craniofacial microsomia are common but inconsistently measured. Hypernasality and articulation errors are the most reported problems, yet prevalence varies widely across studies. Routine speech evaluation is recommended, though evidence for specific interventions remains limited. SLP Other 2023 Phonological Assessment Instrument: evidence of reliability. CoDAS Different therapists scoring the same child's speech with this tool reached the same conclusion about how severe the disorder is. The scores also remained stable when the same therapist re-scored the audio months later. This supports using the tool for consistent clinical assessment. SLP Cohort 2023 Self-reported hearing difficulties and speech-in-noise test performance - what can we find behind a "normal" audiogram? CoDAS Adults with normal hearing tests reported more difficulty understanding speech in noise as they aged, from 30 onwards. Self-reported trouble tracking speech in background noise correlated with poorer performance on actual speech-in-noise tests, suggesting complaints may reflect real processing changes. SLP Other 2023 Voice and Communication Training Program Improves Performance of University Students in Oral Presentations. CoDAS After an eight-week training covering voice, body language, social skills, neuro-linguistic programming, and language, 38 students improved by examiner and self ratings. Single group, so components cannot be separated. SLP Other 2024 The Language-Specificity of Phonetic Adaptation to Talkers. Language and speech Bilingual listeners' ability to adjust to a talker's unusual pronunciation differed by language: English speakers learning Mandarin adjusted in both English and Mandarin, Mandarin speakers adjusted in Mandarin but not reliably in English. SLP Other 2023 Substitution Errors and the Role of Markedness in Bilingual Phonological Acquisition. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Bilingual Spanish-English preschoolers, regardless of speech impairment status, substituted easier, shared sounds for difficult, language-specific ones. However, error counts only distinguished impaired children in English, not Spanish, meaning assessment in both languages is required to avoid missing deficits. SLP Case Report 2023 Use of the Prompts for Reestructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT) in Autism Spectrum Disorder: a case study. CoDAS A six-year-old boy with autism received 16 PROMPT sessions. His speech accuracy and motor control scores improved, reaching all seven target words. This describes one child's response, not proof that PROMPT works for autism. SLP Pilot 2024 Amplitude Compression for Preventing Rollover at Above-Conversational Speech Levels. Trends in hearing For hearing aid users whose speech recognition drops at loud levels, a specific slow-acting compression setting improved understanding in noise and was strongly preferred over standard fitting. This benefit disappeared at quiet levels, where the standard setting was preferred. SLP Other 2024 The Effects of Signal to Noise Ratio, T60 , Wide-Dynamic Range Compression Speed, and Digital Noise Reduction in a Virtual Restaurant Setting. Ear and hearing For hearing aid users, fast-acting compression worked best when digital noise reduction was turned on. Slow-acting compression worked best when noise reduction was off. Turning noise reduction on with slow compression made speech understanding worse. Room reverberation also lowered scores. SLP Other 2024 Electrophysiological Measures of Listening-in-Noise With and Without Remote Microphone System Use in Autistic and Non-Autistic Youth. Ear and hearing No differences were found between autistic and non-autistic youth. A remote microphone system improved syllable identification accuracy in babble noise to quiet levels, but response speed did not improve and brain responses remained delayed. SLP Other 2024 Content validity of the Profiles of Early Expressive Phonological Skills-Brazilian Portuguese (PEEPS-BP) - Expanded List. CoDAS The PEEPS-BP Expanded List now contains 29 stimulus words for assessing vocabulary and phonology in Brazilian Portuguese children aged 24 to 36 months. Experts and mothers selected words familiar to this age group, and children confirmed the corresponding toys were recognizable. OT SLP Cohort 2024 Auditory Neural Responses and Communicative Functioning in Children With Microcephaly Related to Congenital Zika Syndrome. Ear and hearing Children with microcephaly from congenital Zika syndrome showed lower caregiver-reported communication and altered auditory brain responses. Peripheral hearing was normal. Cortical responses to speech were delayed and differentiated less, but present, suggesting central processing differences rather than deafness. SLP Other 2024 Exploring Motor Speech Disorders in Low and Minimally Verbal Autistic Individuals: An Auditory-Perceptual Analysis. American journal of speech-language pathology Most low and minimally verbal autistic individuals showed speech motor impairments, primarily in articulation. These speech difficulties were strongly linked to lower expressive and receptive language scores. This suggests motor speech issues may contribute to language limitations in this population. SLP Other 2024 Evidence of validity and reliability of the Compressed Speech Test with Figures. CoDAS A new auditory test using pictures instead of verbal responses correlates strongly with the standard spoken-word version in children. However, it failed to distinguish between children with typical speech and those with mild phonological disorders, likely because the picture format makes the task too easy for this group. SLP Cohort 2024 Speech-Language Outcomes in the COVID-19 Milieu for Multilingual Jamaican Preschoolers and Considerations for Telepractice Assessments. American journal of speech-language pathology Telepractice assessments for multilingual Jamaican preschoolers showed mixed stability. Parent reports remained reliable, but intelligibility ratings lost correlation in children with speech disorders. Production scores appeared higher during the pandemic, though poor internet access may have skewed results. Caution is needed when interpreting data from low-resource settings. SLP Other 2024 (Why) Do Transparent Hearing Devices Impair Speech Perception in Collocated Noise? Trends in hearing Transparent hearing devices made normal-hearing listeners need a slightly worse signal-to-noise ratio to understand speech in same-direction noise. The effect was small, about 0.5 to 1 dB for most devices. Listening effort did not show a clear change. One earphone showed no impairment. SLP RCT 2024 Focusing on Positive Listening Experiences Improves Speech Intelligibility in Experienced Hearing Aid Users. Trends in hearing Experienced hearing aid users who texted a daily summary of positive listening experiences for two weeks improved their speech-in-noise scores significantly more than controls. The intervention asks users to actively notice and report good sounds, shifting focus away from difficulties. SLP Other 2024 On the Feasibility of Using Behavioral Listening Effort Test Methods to Evaluate Auditory Performance in Cochlear Implant Users. Trends in hearing Listening effort tests detected group differences but failed to distinguish individual changes from normal test variability. Standard speech intelligibility tests were more reliable for identifying the best cochlear implant setting for a specific patient. SLP Pilot 2023 Traditional and Visual-Acoustic Biofeedback Treatment via Telepractice for Residual Speech Sound Disorders Affecting /ɹ/: Pilot study. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Seven children with persistent /ɹ/ distortions completed 20 telepractice sessions combining visual-acoustic biofeedback and motor-based treatment. Six showed clinically meaningful improvement, but the design cannot separate which component drove the gains. SLP Other 2024 Modeling the Intelligibility Benefit of Active Noise Cancelation in Hearing Devices That Improve Signal-to-Noise Ratio. Trends in hearing Simulated hearing aids with active noise cancelation had higher speech-in-noise metric scores than standard aids, especially above 70 dB SPL and with at least 4 dB signal-to-noise improvement. No people tested this. SLP Other 2024 Response to intervention as an identification strategy of the risk for dyslexia. CoDAS After 12 weekly reading and writing sessions, 30 children with school difficulties showed higher reading, writing, and phonological scores. The 12 who showed the least change were classified as at risk for dyslexia. SLP Cohort 2024 Shave, shear, shred, or cut: PPA variant differentially impacts erroneous responses produced in a confrontation naming test of verbs. Aphasiology When people with primary progressive aphasia name actions incorrectly, the wrong words differ by variant. Logopenic errors were more general, with many meanings; nonfluent errors were more concrete. This may inform diagnosis, not treatment. SLP Pilot 2024 Two Independent Response Mechanisms to Auditory Stimuli Measured with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Sleeping Infants. Trends in hearing Sleeping infants show two distinct brain responses to sound. A standard auditory response peaks early, while a separate arousal response causes a delayed drop in oxygenated blood that fades quickly with repetition. This means fNIRS tests in sleep must account for both mechanisms, not just the first. SLP Case Series 2024 Beyond Sounds: Decoding Speech Errors and Phonological Awareness in Preschoolers. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Three preschoolers with speech sound disorders all had weak phonological awareness despite different speech error patterns and average language skills. Severity and error types did not clearly predict phonological awareness deficits. Direct assessment is required to identify literacy risk. SLP Case Report 2024 Phonological remediation effects on a child with giftedness and developmental dyslexia. CoDAS A child with giftedness and dyslexia improved reading speed and phonological awareness after 20 weeks of remediation. Writing and lexical access remained impaired. This single case cannot prove the intervention works for all children with this profile. SLP Case Report 2024 Case Report: Benefits of LSVT LOUD in a multilingual patient with hypokinetic-hyperkinetic dysarthria and suspected progressive supranuclear palsy. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences One multilingual man with suspected progressive supranuclear palsy had louder, clearer speech after 16 LSVT sessions, and his spouse reported better communication. Three months later, vocal quality and intelligibility remained, but loudness and reported communication benefit did not. SLP Cohort 2024 An electrophysiological and behavioral investigation of feedback-based learning in aphasia. Aphasiology People with aphasia learned new words from feedback, but the brain signal for error detection did not predict this learning. Instead, attention and updating skills predicted retention. Feedback is helpful, but cognitive demands may hinder its use. SLP Other 2024 Neural Decoding of the Speech Envelope: Effects of Intelligibility and Spectral Degradation. Trends in hearing Understanding speech gave a small boost to brain tracking of the speech envelope. Degraded sound quality did not change this pattern. English was tracked better than Dutch, but the difference was small. SLP Other 2024 Benefit of Hearing-Aid Amplification and Signal Enhancement for Speech Reception in Complex Listening Situations. Trends in hearing Hearing aids improved speech understanding in several complex listening scenes, and directional hearing-aid settings helped when background noise filled the room. Effort rarely changed, and benefit varied so much that one setting did not suit everyone. SLP Systematic Review 2024 Adaptation to Reverberation for Speech Perception: A Systematic Review. Trends in hearing This paper reviews laboratory experiments on how the brain adjusts to room acoustics. It does not test clinical treatments or patient outcomes. There is nothing here for therapists to apply in practice. ← Previous PAGE 8 OF 12 Next →
