PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Did the speech of patients with Myasthenia Gravis decline over 4 years? CoDAS Speech worsened over four years in stable Myasthenia Gravis patients, with more diagnosed with dysarthria. However, patients felt their speech improved. Self-perception is unreliable for monitoring decline, so objective speech assessments are necessary. SLP Other 2024 A Phoneme-Scale Assessment of Multichannel Speech Enhancement Algorithms. Trends in hearing Speech enhancement algorithms perform unevenly across phonemes. Plosives like /p/ and /b/ remain heavily masked by noise even after processing, while nasals and vowels improve significantly. Utterance-level metrics overestimate performance, hiding these specific deficits in consonant clarity. PT OT SLP Case Report 2025 The functional secondary effect after an integrated rehabilitative intervention to learn reading and writing in a girl with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. Journal of pediatric rehabilitation medicine A girl with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome improved in reading, writing, and digital communication after years of multidisciplinary therapy. Her test scores remained below norms, but she gained autonomy in daily life. This shows what one patient achieved, not that the method works for others. SLP Case-Control 2024 Gaze Following as an Early Diagnostic Marker of Autism in a New Word Learning Task in Toddlers. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Toddlers with a high likelihood of autism looked at eyes and mouths far less than typically developing peers during a word-learning task, focusing almost entirely on objects. Eye-tracking detected the autism group in 96.5% of cases, suggesting gaze patterns could serve as an early diagnostic marker. SLP Case-Control 2024 Defining the Characteristics of Story Production of Autistic Children: A Multilevel Analysis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic children told picture stories with more sound and word errors, fewer picture events and events not shown, and less connected overall than matched peers, even though groups scored similarly on memory, attention and theory-of-mind tasks. SLP RCT 2025 Rehabilitation of post-stroke aphasia by a single protocol targeting phonological, lexical, and semantic deficits with speech output tasks: a randomized controlled trial. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine 2 weeks of PHOLEXSEM improved repetition, naming, fluency and sentence comprehension in people with post-stroke aphasia. PACE improved only noun fluency and word span. The paper did not compare change between groups. SLP Other 2024 Do the Nonlinear Dynamic Acoustic Measurements, Nonlinear Energy Difference Ratio and Spectrum Convergence Ratio, Correlate with Perceptual Evaluation of Esophageal Voice Speakers? Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Nonlinear acoustic measures did not match expert ratings of esophageal voice quality, expert and non-expert intelligibility ratings, or transcription accuracy after total laryngectomy. SLP Other 2025 Symptom Expression Across Voiced Speech Sounds in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In 18 speakers with adductor laryngeal dystonia reading an all-voiced sentence, symptoms were significantly less likely on nasal and stop consonants than on vowels and approximants. However, every sound segment still carried a high probability of symptoms. SLP Pilot 2024 Using a novel in-mask non-invasive ventilator microphone to improve talker intelligibility in healthy and hospitalised adults. International journal of speech-language pathology The prototype showed no overall intelligibility benefit in healthy talkers. In ICU patients, the updated microphone improved number intelligibility and comprehensibility, but speech was not rated more natural. SLP Narrative Review 2024 How to cut the pie is no piece of cake: Toward a process-oriented approach to assessment and diagnosis of speech sound disorders. International journal of language & communication disorders Speech sound errors alone cannot tell you if a child has a phonological or motor planning deficit because the same error can arise from different underlying processes. Current diagnostic labels may miss these distinctions, but validated tools to test specific cognitive and motor processes do not yet exist. SLP Other 2024 Front Is High and Back Is Low: Sound-Space Iconicity in Finnish. Language and speech Finnish speakers consistently matched high-pitched sounds to forward movement and low-pitched sounds to backward movement. They also produced these pitch-vowel pairings faster when the mapping aligned with spatial direction. The effect held for static front/back concepts, not just motion. SLP Survey 2024 Does Orkish Sound Evil? Perception of Fantasy Languages and Their Phonetic and Phonological Characteristics. Language and speech German listeners judged fictional languages by sound alone, preferring those with familiar phonemes and voicing. Klingon and Dothraki sounded evil, but Orkish sounded pleasant, contradicting its design. This shows aesthetic judgments rely on similarity to the listener's native language, not just inherent harshness. SLP Other 2024 Processing of English Coda Laterals in L2 Listeners: An Eye-Tracking Study. Language and speech Mandarin-speaking English learners found the 'l' sound at the end of syllables hardest after back vowels. In a word-label task, they often heard it as part of the vowel, even when they could match pairs in a simpler task. SLP Cohort 2024 Morphosyntactic profiles among preschoolers with and without speech sound disorders. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Preschoolers with speech sound disorders but normal language made more errors on subject pronouns, irregular past tense verbs, and yes/no questions than typical peers. Irregular past tense errors were linked to poor phonological awareness. Other morphosyntactic areas showed no group differences. SLP Other 2025 Phonemic and pitch variability in bilingual preschoolers: A comparison of Jamaican Creole and English. International journal of speech-language pathology Mean pitch and stop-timing measures did not differ between languages. Pitch variability was higher in English than in Jamaican Creole. Pitch variability and stop-timing variability were not related. SLP Cohort 2025 Negative effects on oral motor function after submandibular and parotid botulinum neurotoxin A injections for drooling in children with developmental disabilities. Developmental medicine and child neurology Children receiving concurrent submandibular and parotid botulinum toxin A injections for drooling experienced negative oral motor effects at a similar frequency to those receiving submandibular injections alone. However, a higher proportion of these effects were classified as moderate rather than mild, requiring clinical management such as medication or feeding adjustments. SLP Other 2025 Impact of Japanese L1 Rhythm on English L2 Speech. Language and speech Japanese learners with limited English experience produced English vowels and consonants with less duration variability than native English speakers, consistent with Japanese first-language rhythm carrying over. SLP Narrative Review 2024 Operationalizing Clinical Speech Analytics: Moving From Features to Measures for Real-World Clinical Impact. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR An objective smartphone measure of articulatory precision in ALS matched clinician ratings and tracked speech decline. It may help SLPs plan communication support. SLP Other 2025 Audiovisual Perception of Lexical Stress: Beat Gestures and Articulatory Cues. Language and speech Small hand gestures aligned to syllables shifted listeners’ perception of lexical stress in Dutch words, even when the speaker’s face was visible. Facial articulatory cues alone did not influence perception when clear audio was present, despite being visible in silent video. SLP Case Series 2024 Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Speech Therapy for /ɹ/: A Single-Case Experimental Study. American journal of speech-language pathology In five children and young adults with speech sound errors, adding AI-assisted practice to clinician-led therapy improved /ɹ/ production. Three of five showed clear treatment response on unpracticed words, though results varied by individual. SLP Other 2024 Outcomes Using the Optimized Pitch and Language Strategy Versus the Advanced Combination Encoder Strategy in Mandarin-Speaking Cochlear Implant Recipients. Ear and hearing For Mandarin-speaking cochlear implant users, OPAL did not improve sentence-in-noise recognition. It improved tone recognition, improved single-word recognition in quiet, and was preferred in noise. SLP Cohort 2024 Barriers to Early Progress in Adult Cochlear Implant Outcomes. Ear and hearing Adult cochlear implant users who understood fewer than 90% of words in sentences at 1 month were more likely to have detectable thinking or peripheral limiting factors. Early scores may flag who needs closer follow-up. SLP Case Series 2024 Effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation on the speech of Spanish-speaking Parkinson's disease patients during the first year of treatment. CoDAS Across the group, speech measures did not show confirmed change during the first year after STN-DBS. Individual patients varied, with some increases and some decreases in specific measures, so no uniform speech effect can be assumed. SLP Other 2024 Gender and age biases in the assessment of speech accuracy: A study of speech-language clinicians' ratings of /s/ accuracy. International journal of language & communication disorders Speech-language pathologists rated /s/ productions from children assigned female at birth as more accurate than from children assigned male at birth. The gap widened when age was disclosed, not sex alone. Clinicians should watch age and sex cues. SLP Other 2025 Acoustic Exaggeration Enhances Speech Discrimination in Young Autistic Children. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In young autistic children with speech delay, brain responses to syllables were easier to distinguish when pitch range or consonant timing was exaggerated. This was a passive EEG finding, not proof that speaking this way improves speech or language. SLP Other 2024 Exploring vowel errors produced in nonword repetition in children with speech and language disorders. International journal of language & communication disorders Children with developmental language disorder and childhood apraxia of speech both made more vowel errors repeating nonsense words than typical peers. Children with speech sound disorder did not differ significantly from any group. The study used six children per group, so these patterns are preliminary. SLP Other 2024 Speech perception in the Specific Learning Disorder with and without Persistent Speech Sound Disorder. CoDAS Children with specific learning disorders and persistent speech sound disorder scored lower on a pseudoword perception task than those with learning disorders alone or typical development. A score below 30.5 hits flagged this group, suggesting a need to assess speech perception when speech sounds persist. OT SLP Case Report 2024 A Case Study of Suspected Childhood Apraxia of Sign. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups A 4-year-old deaf signer showed inconsistent handshape, location, and movement errors, sign distortions, groping, and self-manipulation of hands. This single case may indicate apraxia of sign, but does not prove diagnosis or treatment response. SLP Systematic Review 2025 How speech and language therapists and parents work together in the therapeutic process for children with speech sound disorder: A scoping review. International journal of language & communication disorders Parents value therapy that fits their daily life and clear coaching on why and how to do home practice. But therapists often lack confidence in this role, and homework is rarely followed up. Individualization helps engagement, yet it is unclear where flexibility compromises treatment fidelity. SLP Other 2024 Breathy Vocal Quality, Background Noise, and Hearing Loss: How Do These Adverse Conditions Affect Speech Perception by Older Adults? Ear and hearing Older adults understood sentences less well and needed more effort when a simulated talker's voice was severely breathy. Mild-to-moderate breathiness did not have this effect, and hearing loss did not add to the difficulty. SLP Other 2024 Consistency of hearing aid use, speech perception and vocabulary in hearing impaired children. CoDAS Better aided speech perception and auditory dosage, a combined measure of audibility and use, were linked to stronger vocabulary, but daily hours alone were not. SLP RCT 2025 A mixed-methods pilot randomized control trial of ultrasound visual biofeedback versus standard intervention for children with cleft palate ± cleft lip: Parents' and children's perspectives. International journal of language & communication disorders Families found ultrasound biofeedback and standard articulation therapy equally acceptable and enjoyable. Ultrasound was liked for visualizing tongue movements, while standard therapy was liked for games. Travel was the main burden for both groups. This supports a larger trial but does not prove ultrasound works better. SLP Other 2024 Prosodic Preferences of Surface Electromyography-based Subvocal Speech for People With Laryngectomy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation People with laryngectomy and their communication partners rated synthetic speech with continuous pitch mapping as more natural than electrolarynx speech. They prioritized sound quality and intelligibility over ease of use, suggesting future devices should focus on voice naturalness rather than just usability. SLP Cohort 2025 Speech Development Between 30 and 119 Months in Typical Children III: Interaction Between Speaking Rate and Intelligibility. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Faster habitual speech predicted slightly lower intelligibility in young children, but the effect was small. At age 4, a faster rate by 0.5 syllables per second lowered intelligibility by 3 to 5 percentage points. By age 6, this difference dropped to 1 to 2 percentage points. SLP Other 2025 Impact of High- and Low-Pass Acoustic Filtering on Audiovisual Speech Redundancy and Benefit in Children. Ear and hearing For children with typical hearing, seeing the talker helped word recognition more when only low-frequency speech was audible than when only high-frequency speech was audible. For sentences, seeing the talker helped similarly in both filtered conditions. SLP Qualitative 2025 Do you like my voice? Stakeholder perspectives about the acceptability of synthetic child voices in three South African languages. International journal of language & communication disorders Stakeholders in South Africa accepted synthetic child voices in English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa, though they rated the English child voice as less natural and harder to understand. They emphasized that children should choose their own voice to match their identity, and that partner support is critical for adoption. SLP Other 2025 Individual Differences in the Recognition of Spectrally Degraded Speech: Associations With Neurocognitive Functions in Adult Cochlear Implant Users and With Noise-Vocoded Simulations. Trends in hearing Cognitive skills like reasoning and word retrieval help adults with cochlear implants understand degraded speech. However, normal-hearing people listening to simulated implant speech use different cognitive strategies, so these simulations do not accurately reflect how actual implant users process sound. SLP Cohort 2025 Rethinking speech sound disorder (SSD) in non-syndromic cleft lip and palate: The importance of recognizing phonological and language difficulties. International journal of language & communication disorders Children with cleft palate and phonological speech errors had significantly lower language scores than those with typical speech or cleft-specific articulation errors. The combined phonological and cleft group was over ten times more likely to have expressive language difficulties, warranting full language assessment. OT SLP Narrative Review 2024 Some Challenging Questions About Outcomes in Children With Cochlear Implants. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Early implantation alone does not guarantee good outcomes. Consistent full-time device use, comorbidities, and family context drive results. Clinicians should monitor daily wear time and use a biopsychosocial framework to identify barriers to listening and spoken language development. SLP Other 2025 Neural-WDRC: A Deep Learning Wide Dynamic Range Compression Method Combined With Controllable Noise Reduction for Hearing Aids. Trends in hearing A new hearing aid algorithm combining noise reduction and compression was preferred over standard methods, especially in non-stationary noises like sirens and clicks. It reduced speech distortion and noise pumping without requiring multiple microphones, offering better sound quality for users with flat hearing loss. SLP Cohort 2025 Profiles of Early Expressive Phonological Skills-Brazilian Portuguese (PEEPS-BP): a diagnostic accuracy study. CoDAS The PEEPS-BP Expanded List effectively distinguished between children with typical and delayed expressive vocabulary. A cut-off score of 34 points showed high accuracy, with 95.7% sensitivity and 100% specificity, supporting its use for screening Brazilian Portuguese speakers aged 24 to 36 months. SLP Other 2025 Effects of the Program for Developing Oral Communication Expressiveness on university radio announcers: a pre/post intervention study. CoDAS Eight university radio announcers reported better diction and voice sound after an eight-session communication program. Judges rated half the post-training readings as superior, and acoustic analysis showed increased clarity. No control group was used, so these changes cannot be attributed solely to the training. SLP Pilot 2025 The Relationship Between Spatial Release From Masking and Listening Effort Among Cochlear Implant Users With Single-Sided Deafness. Ear and hearing In eight people with single-sided deafness, adding a cochlear implant did not clearly improve speech in noise or reduce listening effort. Spatial separation helped, and people gaining more intelligibility seemed to need less effort. SLP Other 2025 Relationship Between Auditory Distraction and Emotional Dimensionality for Non-Speech Sounds. Ear and hearing Any brief irrelevant sound made responses about 200 ms slower. Pleasant, unpleasant, or exciting sounds also lowered word recognition by about 3 percentage points in quiet, a change the authors say is not clinically meaningful. SLP Other 2025 Development and evaluation of the Digit Triplet Test in Swahili language. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings The Swahili Digit Triplet Test yields a speech recognition threshold of −8.9 dB SNR in normal-hearing adults. It is not yet validated for people with hearing loss, so clinicians should not use it to diagnose hearing impairment. SLP Pilot 2025 Effect of hearing training on hearing and speech skills in children with speech sound disorders. CoDAS Six sessions of computerized auditory training improved how children with speech sound disorders hear speech in noise. Parents saw no change in daily listening, and the training alone did not fix speech errors; it only helped when combined with regular speech therapy. SLP Cohort 2025 Identification of obstruent contrasts by children with and without phonological disorders. CoDAS Children with phonological disorders identified stop sounds more slowly than typical peers, but fricative identification speed was similar. Across both groups, errors most often involved confusing the place of articulation rather than voicing. SLP Cohort 2025 Effects of Masker Intelligibility and Talker Sex on Speech-in-Speech Recognition by Mandarin Speakers Across the Lifespan. Ear and hearing Mandarin-speaking children struggle to use voice pitch to separate speakers but gain huge benefit from unintelligible maskers. Older adults do the opposite: they use pitch cues well but gain little from unintelligibility. Speech-in-speech difficulty shifts from sensory to cognitive processing across the lifespan. SLP Cohort 2025 Variation in second-grade reading in children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Journal of deaf studies and deaf education Kindergarten letter knowledge and vocabulary predict later reading struggles in deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Early screening of these specific skills helps identify which students are at risk for delays in word decoding and comprehension by second grade. SLP Other 2025 Let's See If You Can Hear: The Effect of Stimulus Type and Intensity to Pupil Diameter Response in Infants and Adults. Ear and hearing Pupil dilation increased to loud sounds in infants and adults, but classification models failed to reliably estimate individual hearing thresholds. Background noise likely masked responses to quieter sounds, making pupillometry currently unsuitable for clinical threshold assessment. ← Previous PAGE 9 OF 12 Next →
