PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2023 Comprehensive Geriatric Hospital at Home: Adaptation to Referral and Case-Mix Changes During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Hospital-at-home services for older adults adapted to pandemic changes without worsening outcomes. However, patients referred directly from the community achieved less functional recovery than those stepping down from hospital. Community referrals often involved more complex, frail patients. PT OT RN Cohort 2023 A longitudinal study of disability in activities of daily living and activity restriction-induced fear of falling among Korean older people. Nursing open Older adults who limited activities because they feared falling had more disability in daily tasks over 10 years. Fear of falling without limiting activities was not linked to disability. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2023 Physical, social, mental and spiritual functioning of COVID-19 intensive care unit-survivors and their family members one year after intensive care unit-discharge: A prospective cohort study. Intensive & critical care nursing One year after ICU discharge, most COVID-19 survivors still reported fatigue, weakness or pain and work changes, but rated family functioning and mood positively; family members mostly returned to work. PT RN RCT 2023 Efficacy of a multicomponent exercise training program intervention in community-dwelling older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cluster randomized controlled trial. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Older adults who did a 16-week program of group exercise, home exercise, self-monitoring, videos, and nurse monitoring improved walking, strength, balance, and regular activity. Controls deteriorated. No single part can be isolated. PT OT RN Cohort 2023 Risk Factors for First and Recurrent Fractures among Kidney Transplant Recipients. Progress in transplantation (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) Kidney transplant recipients face high fracture rates, with 27% breaking a bone within 10 years. Female sex, diabetes, and prior fracture increase first-fracture risk. For recurrent fractures, female sex, diabetes, and recent transplant era are key risks, while higher BMI appears protective. PT RN Cohort 2023 The Relationship of Oral Health with Progression of Physical Frailty among Older Adults: A Longitudinal Study Composed of Two Cohorts of Older Adults from the United Kingdom and United States. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults with fewer natural teeth, no teeth, or dry mouth were more likely to progress to physical frailty over 8 years. Links to severe frailty were weaker and often disappeared after adjustment. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2023 Impact of COVID-19 on Long-Term Care Service Utilization of Older Home-Dwelling Adults in Japan. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Long-term care service use for home-dwelling older adults in Japan dropped sharply during the April 2020 state of emergency. Commuting and short-stay services fell most, while home visits declined less. Recovery was uneven. PT Qualitative 2023 Home-Based Care Provider Perspectives on Care Refusal During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of gerontological nursing Home health providers said older patients refused nurses and therapists because they feared catching COVID-19 from them. Providers described hospitalizations from missed wound, medication, drain, and post-operative care, and felt unprepared to calm patients. PT RN Qualitative 2023 "Second set of eyes:" Family caregivers and post-acute home health care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patient education and counseling Family caregivers of older adults discharged home after COVID-19 described being cut off from hospital information, then overwhelmed at home. Home health visits were seen as needed support, but delays and reduced hours left gaps. PT RN Cohort 2023 Impact of Food Insecurity and Undernutrition on Frailty and Physical Functioning in Aging People With HIV in the United States. The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC In 48 older people with HIV, food insecurity was linked to poorer balance, chair rise, and mobility scores; undernutrition was linked to frailty and weaker grip. This pilot cannot show these factors caused the impairments. PT RN Cohort 2023 Order of Onset of Physical Frailty and Cognitive Impairment and Risk of Repeated Falls in Community-Dwelling Older Adults. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults who developed cognitive impairment and physical frailty within a year had the highest repeated-fall risk, 28.3%. Frailty-first versus cognitive-impairment-first did not differ after adjustment. This is an association, not a tested prevention programme. PT OT RN Meta-Analysis 2023 Effects of chair-based resistance band exercise on physical functioning, sleep quality, and depression of older adults in long-term care facilities: Systematic review and meta-analysis. International journal of nursing sciences Chair-based resistance band exercise improved daily living independence, strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, sleep quality and depression in older adults in long-term care. Sessions were about 40 to 46 min, three times weekly, for 12 to 60 weeks. PT OT RN Cohort 2023 Incidence and risk factors of falls in older adults after discharge: A prospective study. International journal of nursing sciences Among 1,077 older Chinese adults after discharge, falls rose to 4.45% at 1 month, 9.03% at 6 months, and 10.80% at 12 months. Depression and frailty were independently associated with falls. PT RN Survey 2023 Prevalence of characteristics associated with sarcopenia in elders: a cross-sectional study. Revista brasileira de enfermagem In primary care elders, 25.52% had probable sarcopenia, 11.8% had sarcopenia, and 9.90% had severe sarcopenia. Calf under 31 cm, male sex, dyslipidemia, polypharmacy and obesity were linked to higher prevalence. Cross-sectional data show association, not cause. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2023 Pain and Associated Factors in Nursing Home Residents. Pain management nursing : official journal of the American Society of Pain Management Nurses Nursing home residents with intact cognition, arthritis, depression, anxiety, or contractures were more likely to report severe or persistent pain. Residents with Alzheimer’s disease reported less pain, likely due to assessment difficulties rather than lower pain levels. PT RN Qualitative 2023 Identifying unmet needs of older adults transitioning from home health care to independence at home: A qualitative study. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Home health patients and caregivers described unmet needs after discharge: low engagement in planning, difficulty accessing community services, and gaps in education for chronic illness and dementia. Clinicians reported limited awareness of these barriers. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2023 Use of Home-Based Clinical Care and Long-Term Services and Supports Among Homebound Older Adults. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Most homebound older adults use long-term supports like assistive devices, but very few receive comprehensive care. Nearly half had minimal services despite being homebound. Clinical teams should screen for gaps in meals, transport, and paid help, not assume skilled home health covers all needs. PT RN Pilot 2023 A feasibility study on home-based kyphosis-specific exercises on reducing thoracic hyperkyphosis in older adults. International journal of nursing sciences A six-week nurse-led program combining weekly classes, daily home practice, video guidance, and a logbook was feasible, and 20 older adults had reduced kyphosis angles, better balance and gait. With no control group, the program components may not be the cause. PT OT RN Cohort 2023 Accumulated incidence of falls in people hospitalised with cancer and related factors. Nursing open Most falls in hospitalised cancer patients happened at night, in the bathroom, or while walking, with the patient unaccompanied. Weakness or loss of balance caused nearly half. Age and psychotropic drugs were linked to injuries, but most falls caused no harm. PT OT RN Other 2023 Interactive gerontechnology for fall prevention in the elderly: a descriptive study. Revista brasileira de enfermagem Thirty older adults rated a 3D scale model of a hazardous home as highly useful for spotting fall risks like loose rugs and poor lighting. Experts agreed the tool is valid for education, but the study did not test if it prevents actual falls. PT OT RN Other 2023 Levels of Accelerometer-Based Physical Activity in Older Adults With a Mismatch Between Physiological Fall Risk and Fear of Falling. Journal of gerontological nursing Older adults whose fear of falling did not match their actual balance risk did significantly less moderate to vigorous physical activity than those whose perception matched reality. This mismatch may contribute to inactivity and increased fall risk in community-dwelling seniors. PT OT SLP RN Cohort Factors Associated With Function-Focused Care Among Hospitalized Older Adults Living With Dementia. Critical care nursing quarterly Hospitalized older adults with dementia who performed more daily activities and had less delirium reported less pain. Positive staff interactions also correlated with lower pain scores. These associations were cross-sectional, so causation is not proven, but they highlight functional engagement as a key factor. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2023 Trajectories of Functional Decline in Older Adults: A Latent Class Growth Curve Analysis. Western journal of nursing research Most older adults stay independent until age 85, but 10% decline rapidly from age 65 and 11% start with high disability. Comorbidities drive decline more than race or sex. Identify these groups early to target care. PT OT SLP RN Qualitative 2023 Setting a Patient-Driven Agenda for Cancer Research Priorities in Geriatric Oncology: A Qualitative Study. Seminars in oncology nursing Older adults with cancer prioritized research into symptom recognition, managing treatment side effects, and frailty over drug development. They reported feeling unheard when clinicians conflated cancer symptoms with normal aging, and highlighted gaps in support for caregivers. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2023 Association of Perceived Neighborhood Environments With Cognitive Function in Older Adults. Journal of gerontological nursing Older adults who perceived better transit access and sidewalk coverage in their neighborhood scored slightly higher on cognitive tests. These links disappeared for other neighborhood features after adjusting for age and education. The sample was highly educated and mostly cognitively intact, so results may not apply to diverse groups. PT OT SLP RN Case-Control 2023 Development and validation of a risk prediction model for visual impairment in older adults. International journal of nursing sciences A risk score using age, blood pressure, physical activity, diabetes, eye history and education separated older adults with and without visual impairment in a Chinese hospital. It was not tested outside that setting, so it cannot yet guide routine screening. PT OT SLP RN Other 2023 King's Parkinson's Disease Pain Questionnaire: reliability and convergent construct validity. Revista brasileira de enfermagem The King's Parkinson's Disease Pain Questionnaire is reliable for assessing pain in Brazilian older adults with Parkinson's. A change of 9 points on its 168-point scale marks a clinically important difference. It correlates weakly with general pain measures, suggesting it captures Parkinson-specific pain. PT OT SLP RN Narrative Review 2023 Multidimensional Frailty and Traumatic Brain Injury among Older Adults: A Literature Review. Investigacion y educacion en enfermeria Frailty predicts worse outcomes after traumatic brain injury in older adults, including higher rates of emotional distress, venous thromboembolism, and functional decline. A multidimensional assessment of physical, psychological, and social frailty may help clinicians anticipate recovery trajectories. PT Cohort 2023 Sex differences in the impact of physical frailty on outcomes in heart failure. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care In heart failure, physical frailty was linked to worse quality of life in women and higher one-year risk of hospitalization, death, or emergency care in men. The study did not show a clear sex difference, and frailty category was not linked to events. PT OT SLP RN Systematic Review 2023 A scoping review of older patients' health-related quality of life, recovery and well-being after intensive care. Nursing open Older ICU survivors face high 1-year mortality and functional decline, but most who survive report acceptable quality of life and willingness to return home. Pain and anxiety are acute issues that often resolve, while frailty and sensory impairments predict poor recovery. PT RN Qualitative 2023 Helpful social support for chronic pain in long-term care residents: "With a little help I manage on my own". Nursing open Long-term care residents with chronic pain said asking nurses for pills helped, but some waited until pain was severe. They valued calm, familiar help that let them keep independence, and disliked rushed care. PT RN Cohort 2023 Gait and/or balance disturbances associated with Alzheimer's dementia among older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment: A longitudinal observational study. Journal of advanced nursing In older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, baseline gait or balance problems were linked to a 24% to 53% higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease over a mean 4.0 years of follow-up. Gait problems were the stronger marker; balance alone was not. PT RN RCT 2023 A music-with-movement exercise programme for community-dwelling older adults suffering from chronic pain: A pilot randomized controlled trial. Nursing open After 8 weeks, older adults with chronic pain who received a bundled programme of music-with-movement exercise, pain education, logbook guidance and WhatsApp reminders reported lower pain intensity than those given usual care plus a pamphlet. Components cannot be isolated. PT OT SLP RN Other 2023 Understanding health-related quality of life trajectories among older adults with diabetes mellitus: Mixed methods research. Nursing open Most older adults with diabetes maintained good quality of life over five years. Those with declining quality of life often viewed diabetes as a destroyer of their lives and struggled with self-care. Comorbidities like pain and financial barriers drove poor outcomes more than diabetes itself. PT OT RN Survey 2023 Self-efficacy, resilience and healthy ageing among older people who have an acute hospital admission: A cross-sectional study. Nursing open Among older people discharged home after an acute hospital admission, higher self-efficacy and resilience were linked to better healthy ageing. More co-morbidities were linked to worse healthy ageing. This does not show that raising self-efficacy improves outcomes. PT SLP Cohort 2023 Hearing Loss and Frailty among Older Adults: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults with worse hearing were more often classified as pre-frail or frail. Among those with hearing loss, people who did not use hearing aids were more often classified as frail than users. This cannot prove hearing aids prevent frailty. PT OT RN Systematic Review 2023 Health effects of social connectedness in older adults living in congregate long-term care settings: A systematic review of quantitative and qualitative evidence. International journal of older people nursing Lower social connectedness in nursing homes and assisted living was linked with more depression, poorer quality of life, and faster death. Most evidence was from one-time comparisons, so it cannot prove connectedness causes better health. PT RN Pilot 2023 Motivational Interviewing for Fall Prevention (MI-FP) pilot study: Older Adults' readiness to participate in fall prevention. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Of 432 eligible older adults, 200 enrolled (46.3%), below the study's recruitment goal. Participants felt confident about fall risks, but following through varied, especially for ongoing balance actions. PT RN Systematic Review 2023 Ageism directed to older adults in health services: A scoping review. Revista latino-americana de enfermagem Older adults in health services faced age bias in diagnosis, treatment, surgery, communication and care; mapped studies suggested education, training and better communication as responses. PT Cohort 2024 Admission Cognition and Function Predict Change in Physical Function Following Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association In skilled nursing rehab patients, better admission cognition and greater daily independence predicted larger gains in walking and balance; higher baseline walking and balance predicted smaller gains. These are associations, not evidence a treatment works. PT OT RN Cohort 2023 Association between Timing of Clinical Evaluation by a Physician or Advanced Practitioner and Risk of Rehospitalization in Older Adults Admitted to a Skilled Nursing Facility Following Hospitalization: A Cohort Study. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association In skilled nursing facilities, a later first visit by a physician or advanced practitioner was associated with higher 14-day rehospitalization risk. Each day later was associated with 3% to 35% higher risk. PT OT SLP RN Other 2023 Frailty Syndrome and sarcopenia in older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus in the municipality of Sinop, Mato Grosso: an epidemiological study. Revista latino-americana de enfermagem Older adults with type 2 diabetes were significantly more likely to be frail than those without diabetes. Sarcopenia rates were similar in both groups. Physical inactivity strongly increased the likelihood of both frailty and sarcopenia. PT OT RN Other 2024 Functional fitness and risk factors of older patients with diabetes combined with sarcopenia and/or frailty: A cross-sectional study. Nursing open In hospitalized older adults with diabetes, those with frailty or sarcopenia had lower strength, walking, balance, and flexibility. A shorter 6-minute walk distance was linked to frailty or sarcopenia and can help flag mobility decline. PT OT RN Cohort 2024 Association of frailty with activity levels and sedentary behaviours in patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis: A cross-sectional study. Nursing open In 503 hospitalized patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis, 21.3% were frail. Frailty was significantly associated with higher age and worse liver function, and patients who were insufficiently active and highly sedentary had 2.829 times the odds of frailty. PT OT RN RCT 2024 Life-Space of Older Adults after Discharge from Skilled Nursing Facilities. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Thirty days after skilled nursing facility discharge, older adults in this study had very limited life-space: mean score 22.6 on a 0 to 120 scale. Many needed equipment or another person to move. Higher cognitive test scores and shorter stay were associated with better scores. PT RN Systematic Review 2024 Facilitators and barriers to the implementation of dietary nutrition interventions for community-dwelling older adults with physical frailty and sarcopenia: A qualitative meta-synthesis. International journal of nursing sciences Older adults and healthcare providers said nutrition plans for frailty and sarcopenia were hard to follow with cost, weight fears, old habits, and abrupt endings. They said tailored diet and exercise, support, and wrap-up were important. PT OT SLP Cohort 2024 Presymptomatic Profiles of Cognitive Impairment with Prior Mobility Impairment. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults who later developed cognitive impairment and had prior slow gait showed lower psychomotor speed and manual dexterity seven years before symptoms. They also had higher BMI, blood pressure, and insulin resistance. These profiles suggest metabolic and motor pathways rather than memory decline precede dementia. PT OT RN Meta-Analysis 2024 The prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia in Thai older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis. International journal of nursing sciences 20.7% of older Thai adults in the included studies had sarcopenia. Rates were 33.4% in hospitals, 23.2% in outpatient clinics and 17.3% in community. Age, male sex, low BMI and malnutrition were associated. PT OT RN Other 2024 Inactivity May Identify Older Intensive Care Unit Survivors at Risk for Post-Intensive Care Syndrome. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Very low wrist-measured activity in older ICU survivors was seen with worse attention, strength, dexterity, and more depression or anxiety. The study was small and exploratory, and it cannot show that activity causes these problems. PT OT Systematic Review 2024 Reducing the Burdens of Paid Caregivers of Older Adults by Using Assistive Technology: A Scoping Review. Western journal of nursing research Paid caregivers reported less physical strain with handrails, transfer devices and bidet seats, but sensors and robots were also reported to bring alarm burden, extra effort and worry. The evidence is too small and mixed to prove these technologies work. ← Previous PAGE 4 OF 29 Next →
