PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2020 Predicting hospital outcomes with the reported edmonton frail scale-Thai version in orthopaedic older patients. Journal of clinical nursing Preoperative frailty screening with the REFS-Thai predicted postoperative complications and delirium better than standard medical assessments in older orthopaedic patients. Frail patients had higher odds of complications and longer stays, while apparent frailty also predicted delirium. PT RN Other 2021 Older adults' social network and support and its association with physical activity. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Perceived support did not show a clear link with diary exercise minutes, but older adults with knee osteoarthritis and hypertension named many potential helpers. A nurse-led support session increased confidence in 60 of 72. PT Qualitative 2021 A multisite study of multidisciplinary ICU team member beliefs toward early mobility. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care ICU staff believed early mobility helped patients but feared falls, line dislodgement and instability. Nurses were seen as both key initiators and blockers, while staffing, equipment and time shaped whether mobilization happened. PT OT Cohort 2020 Executive Function, Dexterity, and Discharge Disposition in Older Intensive Care Unit Survivors. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses In older ICU survivors, worse attention and task switching were linked to worse hand dexterity. Those discharged to a facility had lower dexterity and task-switching scores than those discharged home. PT RN Other 2021 A geriatrics walking clinic improves hemoglobin A1c and timed gait in older veterans with type 2 diabetes. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Older veterans with type 2 diabetes in a 6-week walking clinic had improved HbA1c at 3, 6, and 12 months and faster timed gait at 6 weeks. The clinic also gave diet advice and nurse calls, so walking alone is not proven. PT RN Cohort 2021 The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB): A Quick and Useful Tool for Fall Risk Stratification Among Older Primary Care Patients. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older primary care patients with low SPPB scores had higher one-year fall rates, especially slow walkers. Over four years, total SPPB and walking speed still flagged higher fall rates. PT OT RN RCT 2021 A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial Testing the Impact of Function and Behavior Focused Care for Nursing Home Residents With Dementia. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association A nursing home program increased resident activity and reduced resistiveness to care at 4 months, but these gains disappeared by 12 months. There were no improvements in daily function, mood, or agitation. The intervention requires ongoing staff mentoring to sustain changes. PT OT SLP RN Survey 2020 Factors Affecting Quality of Life Among the Elderly in Long-Term Care Hospitals. The journal of nursing research : JNR Depression and care dependency were the strongest links to lower quality of life in 202 elderly inpatients. Nurse-patient interaction scores did not predict quality of life. Family visits and cognitive status also correlated with well-being in this convenience sample. PT RCT 2021 The Cardiac Care Bridge randomized trial in high-risk older cardiac patients: A mixed-methods process evaluation. Journal of advanced nursing A nurse-coordinated cardiac transition programme did not show a significant difference in 6-month readmission or mortality, and only 67% of intended care was delivered. PT RN Other 2021 Individual Differences in Response to Supervised Exercise Therapy for Peripheral Artery Disease. Western journal of nursing research After 12 weeks of supervised exercise therapy for peripheral artery disease, mean six-minute walking distance rose by 29.0 m, yet 31.8% did not improve. Each participant improved in at least one outcome. PT RN Systematic Review 2021 Sleep, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Interventions for Sleep Improvement: An Integrative Review. Western journal of nursing research In mild cognitive impairment, self-reported sleep problems are common, but objective sleep findings are inconsistent. Sleep interventions improved some subjective sleep, but objective sleep changes were inconsistent. PT OT RN Cohort 2021 Mobility and Self-Care are Associated With Discharge to Community After Home Health for People With Dementia. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association In home health, people with dementia had lower successful discharge to community: 71% versus 81% without dementia. Greater dependence in mobility or self-care was the strongest observed risk factor. PT RN Qualitative 2021 Usability testing of tablet-based cognitive behavioral intervention application to improve a simple walking activity for older adults with arthritis fatigue. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Older adults with arthritis fatigue found a tablet app easy to use and helpful for planning walking, but reported trouble holding it, operating video calls, and stiff wristbands. It shows usability issues, not that walking or fatigue improved. PT RN Case-Control 2021 Increase in Frailty in Nursing Home Survivors of Coronavirus Disease 2019: Comparison With Noninfected Residents. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Nursing home residents who survived SARS-CoV-2 became more frail and slower than matched noninfected residents over follow-up. Their grip strength also fell more. Cognitive scores dropped in both groups, so infection did not distinguish them. PT OT RN Survey 2021 Fear of Falling among Community-dwelling Sedentary and Active Older People. Investigacion y educacion en enfermeria Fear of falling did not differ between active and sedentary older adults. Sedentary participants had higher depression screening scores, but this survey cannot show that activity changed either outcome. PT OT RN Other 2021 Back pain and heart failure in community-dwelling older adults: Findings from the Health ABC study. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Older adults with back pain reported more falls, worse function, depression and fatigue. Women with heart failure were more likely to report back pain; cognition did not differ. PT RN Narrative Review 2021 Perioperative management of elderly patients with osteoarthritis requiring total knee arthroplasty. Journal of perioperative practice Preoperative education, pain drugs, strength exercises, blood management and early mobilisation are discussed for older patients having total knee replacement. This is a narrative review, so these are reported recommendations, not tested outcomes. PT OT RN Cohort 2021 Recovery from Coronavirus Disease 2019 among Older Adults in Post-Acute Skilled Nursing Facilities. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults recovering from COVID-19 in skilled nursing facilities generally regained function and returned home, with no significant difference in discharge rates compared to non-COVID patients. However, those with moderate-to-severe frailty started lower and ended with significantly less independence than non-frail peers. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2021 Exploring a Nursing Home-Specific, Interdisciplinary, Function-Focused, Communicative Framework Based on Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. The journal of nursing research : JNR Nursing home staff described SBAR communication as a way to share subtle functional changes, such as walking difficulties or eating problems. Nurses acted as the central hub, receiving most referrals to assess medical needs before directing care to therapists or support staff. PT RN Survey 2021 Association of fear of falling with frailty in community-dwelling older adults: A cross-sectional study. Nursing & health sciences Among 158 independent Chinese older adults, 81% feared falling and 60.1% were frail. Fear of falling was linked to being 7.2 times more likely to be frail after adjustment. PT OT RN Survey 2021 Health Promoting Behaviors, Health Needs and Associated Factors among Older Adults in Jordan: A Cross-Sectional Study. International journal of community based nursing and midwifery Jordanian older adults scored low on exercise and nutrition but high on self-actualization. Those with chronic diseases, lower income, or who were unmarried had poorer health behaviors. Married and higher-income participants engaged more in physical activity and healthy eating. PT RN Other 2021 Household Physical Activity and Risk for Future Falls in Community-Dwelling Older Adults. Journal of gerontological nursing More gardening or yardwork was associated with less risk for future falls in older adults. Heavy outdoor work and meal preparation were not. This is an association, not proof gardening prevents falls. PT OT RN Cohort 2021 Predicting Mortality Risk in Older Hospitalized Persons With COVID-19: A Comparison of the COVID-19 Mortality Risk Score with Frailty and Disability. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Adding pre-admission disability and frailty scores to a standard COVID-19 mortality risk score improved prediction accuracy for older hospitalized patients. Functional status two weeks before admission was independently associated with survival, suggesting these factors should be routinely assessed. PT OT RN Other 2021 Using structural equation modeling in the understanding of functional disability in older adults. Revista latino-americana de enfermagem Older adults had more difficulty with complex social activities than daily tasks or self-care. Frailty, depression, low schooling and long sitting were linked to lower function. More illnesses were associated with lower function through these factors. PT Other 2021 Racial differences in physical activity in nursing home residents with cognitive impairment. Applied nursing research : ANR After accounting for age, cognition, and comorbidities, African American and White nursing home residents with cognitive impairment had no clear differences in function or physical activity. Both groups had insufficient activity, so activity plans should target all residents rather than by race. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Incident Impaired Cognitive Function in Sarcopenic Obesity: Data From the National Health and Aging Trends Survey. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults with low grip strength, with or without obesity, were at significantly higher risk of developing impaired cognitive function over 8 years. Obesity alone did not increase this risk, suggesting muscle weakness is the primary driver of cognitive decline in this population. PT Protocol Telehealth Exercise Intervention in Older Adults With HIV: Protocol of a Multisite Randomized Trial. The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC No results yet. This protocol plans a randomized trial of telehealth group exercise for older adults with HIV. It can show feasibility and fitness effects later, but cannot change patient care now. PT OT RN RCT 2022 Effects of comprehensive intervention on life quality among the elderly with Alzheimer Disease and their caregivers based on mixed models. Nursing open The main patient quality-of-life score did not differ significantly between groups after six months. Caregiver burden and care ability improved more with the added team-based care package. PT RCT 2021 Intranasal Oxytocin Improves Lean Muscle Mass and Lowers LDL Cholesterol in Older Adults with Sarcopenic Obesity: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Older adults using intranasal oxytocin in a small pilot showed greater lean mass gain and LDL cholesterol reduction than placebo, but physical function and gait speed did not improve. PT OT Systematic Review 2021 Home/community-based interventions to improve function in persons with mild cognitive impairment/early dementia. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) In older adults with mild cognitive impairment or early dementia, only some home/community programmes improved daily or instrumental activities. Physical activity alone did not improve these outcomes, and many studies did not measure them. PT Other 2021 Grip strength as a predictor of disease severity in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Among hospitalized adults with confirmed COVID-19, low grip strength at admission was associated with severe disease even after considering age, obesity, COPD and CRP. It may help flag risk, but this was an association, not proof grip strength caused severity. PT RN Qualitative Pain in Homebound Older Adults with Heart Failure after Hospital Discharge. Home healthcare now Homebound older adults with heart failure reported pain averaging 5.2 out of 10 after discharge, with sleep and walking most affected. Patients often waited until pain was severe before taking medication and said providers did not always acknowledge it. PT OT RN Other 2021 Effectiveness of a group-walking intervention for people with dementia based on quality of life and caregivers' burden. Nursing open A nurse-led group walking programme did not improve quality of life or daily function. Physical functioning worsened, disability and dependence increased, and caregiver burden showed no clear change. Without a control group, these changes cannot be credited to walking. PT OT SLP RN Other 2021 Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Home Care Services Among Community-Dwelling Adults With Dementia. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Home care therapy visits for people with dementia in Ontario fell to half early in the pandemic; nursing visits stayed near 2019 levels, and personal care fell 16%. By late September, rates recovered or exceeded 2019 levels. PT OT RN Systematic Review 2022 Multidimensional factors affecting homebound older adults: A systematic review. Journal of nursing scholarship : an official publication of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Homebound older adults were often defined as leaving home less than once a week. Reported prevalence ranged from 3.5% to 39.8%. Advanced age, female sex, cognitive impairment, and home-entry barriers were common factors. PT OT RN Pilot 2021 A classification algorithm to predict chronic pain using both regression and machine learning - A stepwise approach. Applied nursing research : ANR Daily step counts predicted weekly pain intensity and interference in older adults, while sleep hours did not. This is a pilot prediction finding, not evidence that a wearable device or more walking treats pain. PT OT RN Qualitative 2022 Risk factors for manifestations of frailty in hospitalized older adults: A qualitative study. Journal of advanced nursing Hospitalized older adults and ward staff described fear of falls, low staffing, poor communication and lost routines as factors that may restrict independence and worsen frailty signs such as delirium, falls and immobility. PT OT RN Cohort 2021 Frailty and sociodemographic and health factors, and social support network in the brazilian elderly: A longitudinal study. Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da U S P Over 10 years, frailty rose in older adults living at home, and it was linked to worsening independence, more depressive symptoms, and more illnesses. Social support fell, but it was not linked to frailty. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2022 Relationships Between Community Virus Activity and Cardiorespiratory Rehospitalizations From Post-Acute Care. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Community spread of influenza A(H3N2), influenza B, and RSV is linked to higher rates of heart and lung rehospitalizations for nursing home residents. Clinicians should intensify infection control and monitoring during these specific viral seasons. PT RN Systematic Review 2022 Fall prevention in hospitals and nursing homes: Clinical practice guideline. Worldviews on evidence-based nursing Hospital and nursing-home falls can be reduced by tailored multifactorial programmes, patient education and therapist-led exercise. Do not rely on a fall-risk score alone or low-floor beds. Avoid exercise in frail residents because it may increase falls. PT OT Survey 2022 Home care providers' perceptions of shared decision-making with older clients (and their caregivers): A cross-sectional study. Nursing & health sciences Home care providers see older adults facing frequent decisions about daily help, falls, and health management. They rated staying home versus moving as the hardest. Family members were involved in decisions far more often than the clinical team. PT OT Pilot 2022 Remotely supervised home-based online chair yoga intervention for older adults with dementia: Feasibility study. Complementary therapies in clinical practice Online chair yoga at home was feasible for older adults with dementia: 7 of 10 who started completed it, with no injuries. Clinical outcomes did not improve, and emotional loneliness increased, so this does not show benefit. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2022 Reasons for Hospitalization while Receiving Dementia Care Coordination through Maximizing Independence at Home. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association In older adults with dementia receiving home care coordination, infection and falls were the top causes of hospitalization. Severely impaired patients were hospitalized most often for infection, while mildly impaired patients fell most often. PT Other 2022 Role of Environment on Physical Activity Patterns of Older Adults Living With HIV in New York City. The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC Older adults with HIV walked 382.9 ft in 6 minutes, 75.4% of expected capacity. They reported 1.54 minutes moderate and 0.37 minutes vigorous activity weekly, and traffic hazards were associated with moderate and vigorous activity time. PT Other 2023 Candidate biomarkers of physical frailty in heart failure: an exploratory cross-sectional study. European journal of cardiovascular nursing Plasma IGF-1, adiponectin, and myostatin were lower in adults with heart failure who were physically frail. Other tested markers did not show these associations, and the findings are preliminary. PT OT Qualitative 2023 Physical Activity Programming for Older Adults in Assisted Living: Residents' Perspectives. Western journal of nursing research Assisted living residents wanted physical activity programs to be shorter, group-based, safe and adaptable. They preferred framing goals as adding light activity rather than reducing sitting, and found chair-only classes too easy. PT Other 2022 Factors associated with the 6-minute walk test performance in older adults with hyperkyphosis. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) In older adults with hyperkyphosis, spine curvature severity was not independently associated with 6-minute walk distance. Taller height, lower weight, and fewer prescription medications were associated with walking farther. PT OT Other 2023 Using consensus methods to prioritize modifiable risk factors for development of manifestations of frailty in hospitalized older adults. Nursing open 14 clinical and academic experts agreed 44 modifiable risk factors for frailty in hospitalized older adults, from pain and medication to mobility, elimination and call bells. This is a care planning list, not tested evidence that targeting them improves outcomes. PT RN Other 2022 A comprehensive health education plus monitoring support program for older adults with knee osteoarthritis coexisting with overweight and type 2 diabetes. International journal of nursing sciences Older Thai adults with knee osteoarthritis, diabetes and overweight had lower pain at 6 months when village volunteers supported their walking, strengthening and diet plan after education (1.73 versus 2.93 on 0 to 10). Baseline pain differed, and other outcomes were mixed. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 Effects of equine-assisted interventions on older adults' health: A systematic review. International journal of nursing sciences Equine-assisted interventions produced mixed results in 265 older adults across 13 small studies, with low-quality evidence, and the only cognitive study found no improvement. ← Previous PAGE 3 OF 29 Next →
