OT Narrative Review 2022 Menopause and work: A narrative literature review about menopause, work and health. Work (Reading, Mass.) Menopause at work is poorly understood and often hidden. Severe symptoms may lower ability to work, but evidence is mixed. Workplace supports like flexible hours, temperature control, supervisor awareness and confidential advice are suggested, not proven. PT OT Other 2022 Rehabilitation Through Physical Activity and Sport in Light of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health-Current Research Perspectives. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences A pilot study of sports coaching for workers with injuries showed participants felt more active and reported better quality of life after five months. However, the study is ongoing, small, and lacks a control group, so these improvements cannot yet be attributed to the coaching itself. PT OT Case-Control 2022 Reduced Gain and Shortened Time Constant of Vestibular Velocity Storage as a Source of Balance and Movement Sensitivities in Gravitational Insecurity. Occupational therapy international Adults with mild gravitational insecurity showed reduced vestibular velocity storage gain and shorter time constants compared to matched controls. They relied more on effortful hip strategies for balance. These findings link specific central vestibular processing deficits to movement sensitivities in this population. OT Survey 2022 The effect of family cohesion and adaptability on career choice self-efficacy of graduates: The mediating effect of State Anxiety. Work (Reading, Mass.) Family cohesion did not directly boost graduates' career confidence. Instead, it reduced state anxiety, which then increased confidence. Family adaptability had a direct positive effect. State anxiety was the strongest negative predictor of career self-efficacy. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 How parents of children with autism spectrum disorder experience the COVID-19 pandemic: Perspectives and insights on the new normal. Research in developmental disabilities Parents of children with autism described lockdown as initially offering rest and family time, but prolonged isolation led to severe stress, routine disruption, and behavioral crises. They urgently requested remote psychological support and adapted educational strategies to maintain engagement. OT Survey 2022 Modelling triadic relationships in families of children with intellectual disability. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID In families of children with intellectual disability, higher maternal distress was linked with more behaviour problems in both the child and a sibling. Household poverty was linked with more distress and behaviour problems. These are associations, not proof that intervention changes them. OT Survey 2022 Effects of Smartphone Overdependence and the Quality of Friendship on Depression among High School Students. Occupational therapy international Among 121 Korean high school students, higher smartphone overdependence and lower friendship quality were both linked to more depression. The study did not test treatment, so it does not show changing either would help. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on worry and medical disruptions reported by individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 copy number variants and their caregivers. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Caregivers and patients with 22q11.2 syndromes reported widespread medical care disruptions, with 36% saying these harms significantly affected their health. Contrary to expectations, their pandemic worry levels were similar to the general population, not higher. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Toward a digital citizen lab for capturing data about alternative ways of self-managing chronic pain: An attitudinal user study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with chronic pain and their doctors are open to using apps to track how alternative therapies affect them. They want to share data to improve care but worry about cost, complexity, and whether computers can truly understand their pain. OT Qualitative 2022 A Case Study of Co-production Within a Mental Health Recovery College Dementia Course: Perspectives of A Person With Dementia, Their Family Supporter and Mental Health Staff. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Four people involved in co-producing a dementia Recovery College course described it as positive, collaborative and empowering, including helping the person with dementia feel safer talking openly. It reports experiences, not proof that the course works. PT OT Other 2022 Physical function and health-related quality of life of community-dwelling older adults with locomotive syndrome and pre-frailty. Journal of physical therapy science Older adults with locomotive syndrome and pre-frailty had lower health-related quality of life and slower sit-to-stand than robust peers. Those with locomotive syndrome alone had poorer mobility test scores and slower walking, but similar quality of life. OT Survey 2022 Association of stigmatizing attitudes with people's opinion of depression as a valid reason for sickness absence: A Swedish vignette study. Work (Reading, Mass.) Swedish adults with negative attitudes toward depression were significantly more likely to reject sickness absence for a person with mild depression. This suggests public stigma may pressure employees to stay at work, potentially delaying necessary recovery or prompting premature return-to-work decisions. OT Other 2022 Why serendipitous informal knowledge sharing interactions are key to boundary spanning and creativity. Work (Reading, Mass.) This paper analyzes knowledge sharing in corporate innovation teams. It does not involve patients, clinical interventions, or healthcare outcomes, so there is nothing here for therapists to apply. OT Survey 2022 Building social support: The impact of workgroup characteristics, the COVID-19 pandemic and informal interactions. Work (Reading, Mass.) Seafarers who shared leisure activities with colleagues reported more instrumental and emotional support. High workload and the COVID-19 pandemic reduced these activities, which in turn lowered perceived support. National diversity also reduced informal interactions, weakening the support network. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Feeding practices in public hospitals' neonatal intensive care units: An exploration into the ways in which COVID-19 affected the best practice in Gauteng. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings In two South African NICUs, lockdowns left staff overloaded, so nurses took over feeding, mothers were often absent, and caregiver training stopped. PT OT Pilot 2022 A Remotely Delivered Progressive Walking Intervention for Adults With Persistent Symptoms of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Feasibility and Exploration of Its Impact. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences For adults with persistent concussion symptoms, a remote progressive walking programme with coaching, monitoring and education was feasible, safe and well accepted. Participants walked more and reported fewer symptoms, less fear of movement, less fatigue and better quality of life. OT Cohort 2022 Relationship between Activities of Daily Living of Home-Based Rehabilitation Users and Caregiver Burden-Induced Depression: A Retrospective Study. Occupational therapy international Caregiver burden was highest when patients had poor bladder control. A Barthel Index score of 5 or less for bladder control identified 90% of caregivers with high burden. This simple indicator may help occupational therapists spot caregivers at risk for depression. OT SLP Cohort 2022 The relevance of the interpersonal theory of suicide for predicting past-year and lifetime suicidality in autistic adults. Molecular autism In autistic adults, feeling like a burden and mentally rehearsing suicide predicted suicidal thoughts and attempts. Being single increased risk via these feelings. Pain tolerance did not predict attempts, and age at diagnosis showed no link to suicidality in this sample. OT SLP Survey 2022 Comparison of unmet health care needs in children with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder and both disorders combined. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with intellectual disability alone had more unmet medical, hearing and mental health care needs than children with autism, and more gaps in insurance coverage; children with both diagnoses had more general unmet needs but fewer unmet medical needs. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 The effects of COVID-19 on the rehabilitation of persons with aphasia: A scoping review. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Lockdowns and social distancing disrupted aphasia rehabilitation, reducing therapy sessions and isolating patients from support groups. Telehealth increased access but failed for many due to motor difficulties, cognitive issues, and clinicians' lack of online training. Caregivers faced overwhelmed roles and mental health strain. PT OT Cohort 2022 A further study of relations between motor impairment and social communication, cognitive, language, functional impairments, and repetitive behavior severity in children with ASD using the SPARK study dataset. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In 13,887 children with autism, parent-reported motor problems were worse when social communication, repetitive behavior, cognitive, language, or daily-living difficulties were greater. Writing, cutting, ball skills, and coordination problems were most linked to those difficulties. PT OT Cohort 2022 Factors that affect early postoperative health-related quality of life in patients with gastrointestinal cancer: a three-center cohort study. Journal of physical therapy science Four weeks after gastrointestinal cancer surgery, most quality-of-life scores dropped, but mental health improved. Walking distance at four weeks and baseline vitality predicted physical function, while walking distance, income, and baseline general health predicted general health. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Attention/Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescent and Young Adult Males With Fragile X Syndrome. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities 42% of adolescent and young adult males with Fragile X Syndrome met DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, mostly the inattentive type. The CBCL rating scale missed nearly 20% of these cases, so relying on it alone can lead to under-diagnosis in this group. PT OT Qualitative 2022 It Is "All About Relationships" in Lifestyle Programmes for Adults Living With Type Two Diabetes Underpinned by a Person/Whānau-Centred Care Approach. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Participants described relationships as the core of their engagement. A non-judgmental, flexible atmosphere allowed them to balance attendance with family, work, and health demands. Attendee-led education helped them process information over time, empowering them to share knowledge with whānau and community. OT Other 2022 Exploring the use of activity-based group therapy in increasing self-efficacy and subjective well-being in acute mental health. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT After one activity group, patients' confidence in using the activity to cope was moderate to high. This coping confidence predicted general mental health self-efficacy at discharge, which in turn predicted higher life satisfaction and happiness. Enjoying the activity mattered more than just completing it. PT OT Other 2022 Biopsychosocial factors associated with chronic low back pain-related activity limitations in Burundi. The South African journal of physiotherapy Lower education, poorer abdominal endurance, and higher depression scores were the strongest predictors of activity limitations in 58 Burundian patients with chronic low back pain. These three factors explained 49% of the variance in disability. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2022 What is intended by the term "participation" and what does it mean to people living with dementia? A conceptual overview and directions for future research. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences There is no agreed definition of "participation" for people with dementia, and current tests measure daily tasks or memory, not social involvement. Clinicians should not assume standard assessments capture a patient's desire to stay connected or their lived experience of social life. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Hope for "Continued Vitality": Qualitative Study of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury and Low Mood on Their Rehabilitation. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Adults with concussion and low mood described feeling invalidated when providers doubted their invisible symptoms, worsening their distress. They wanted providers to believe them, set realistic recovery expectations, and coordinate care so they did not have to self-advocate. OT Cohort 2022 Identifying subgroups based on self-assessment of ability in patients with schizophrenia and its relationship with vocational outcomes. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Patients with schizophrenia were grouped by how accurately they rated their own abilities. Those who overestimated had more positive symptoms, while those who underestimated had worse vocational outcomes linked to low motivation and self-doubt. OT Other 2022 Visual imagery imitation skills and cognitive functions in patients with Schizophrenia. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT In 33 adults with schizophrenia, poorer imitation was linked to longer illness, lower daily functioning, and slower mental rotation of visual images. This does not show that any teaching change improves imitation. PT OT Qualitative 2022 Interprofessional Collaborative Relationship-Building Model in Action in Primary Care: A Secondary Analysis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Team members in primary care valued co-location for face-to-face talks to clarify therapist roles. They moved from seeing OTs and PTs as fillers for gaps to trusting their expertise in chronic pain and function. This shift relied on informal communication rather than just written referrals. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Autistic adults have poorer quality healthcare and worse health based on self-report data. Molecular autism Autistic adults report significantly poorer healthcare experiences than non-autistic peers across communication, sensory environment, and access. They are far less likely to feel understood or able to describe symptoms, and much more likely to experience anxiety or shutdowns during medical visits. OT SLP Survey 2022 Remote and Hybrid Schooling During COVID-19: Associations with Child Behavior and Sleep. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Parents reported that elementary children in remote schooling had more hyperactivity, peer problems, and total behavior difficulties than those in-person. Remote learners also showed later sleep midpoints and higher odds of co-sleeping. Hybrid learners had fewer issues than remote, but some social deficits remained. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2022 White matter microstructural and morphometric alterations in autism: implications for intellectual capabilities. Molecular autism White matter differences in autism were driven almost entirely by participants with intellectual impairment or minimal verbal ability. In intellectually able autistic adults, brain structure looked similar to controls. This suggests previous studies excluding these groups missed the main biological signal. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Relationships at Work: Integrating the Perspectives of Disability Partners to Enhance a Peer Navigation Intervention. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Peer navigators with disabilities built trust by sharing lived experiences and focusing on immediate practical barriers like wheelchair repairs. This relational foundation allowed peers to later address deeper issues such as systemic racism, trauma, and social isolation. PT OT Other 2022 Ergonomic evaluation of school furniture in Slovenia: From primary school to university. Work (Reading, Mass.) School furniture in Slovenia is largely unsuitable for students, with desk and seat heights being too high for the majority. This mismatch varies by age and gender, requiring at least two furniture sizes in each classroom to accommodate students' diverse body dimensions. OT RCT 2022 Effects of Combining Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Bilateral Upper Limb Training in Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Occupational therapy international Adding cognitive behavioral therapy to bilateral upper limb training reduced depression, anxiety, and negative thoughts in stroke patients. It did not improve upper limb function more than conventional therapy, but it did increase patient satisfaction with their performance. OT Qualitative 2022 Cocreation from Emerging Opportunities: Occupational Therapists' Perspectives on Supporting Older Persons, in Japan. Occupational therapy international Therapists described moving beyond fixed goals to seize emerging opportunities, such as a client's new social role from a craft or a terminal patient's wish to wander. They co-created flexible plans with clients and staff, adapting interventions as the client's vision of their future life evolved. OT Cohort 2022 Healing the wounds of workplace bullying: Evaluating mental health and workplace participation among victims seeking treatment for common mental disorders. Work (Reading, Mass.) Bullying victims improved their mental health symptoms as much as non-victims after roughly 10 sessions of therapy with a work focus. However, they were significantly less likely to be fully working after treatment, suggesting they need more support with the actual return to work. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Key demographics and psychological skills associated with adjustment to progressive Multiple Sclerosis early in the diagnosis. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences People with secondary progressive MS reported worse adjustment than those with primary progressive MS. Self-efficacy, avoidance coping, and psychological vulnerability were the strongest factors linked to how well patients adapted. These findings suggest targeting these specific areas in early rehabilitation support. PT OT Cohort 2022 Geriatric Vulnerabilities Among Obese Older Adults With and Without Sarcopenia: Findings From a Nationally Representative Cohort Study. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) Obese older adults with sarcopenia had 6.4 times the odds of being frail and twice the odds of social isolation, depression, and pain compared to obese peers without sarcopenia. Screen for these vulnerabilities before prescribing weight loss or exercise. OT RCT 2022 Healthy Minds: Group Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention for Sustainable Return to Work After a Sick Leave Due to Depression. Journal of occupational rehabilitation In a small pilot, the work-focused group CBT did not clearly reduce depressive or anxiety symptoms more than control. Work productivity scores improved in the intervention group from baseline to post-intervention and six-month follow-up, but this was a pilot with 30 participants. OT Qualitative 2023 Benefits and challenges of mobility and medical alert service dogs for caregivers of service dog recipients. Disability and rehabilitation. Assistive technology Caregivers of mobility and medical service dog recipients described family emotional support and caregiver bonding, but also time, grooming, travel and unexpected costs. Waitlist caregivers expected fewer family benefits and more task benefits than caregivers with a dog described. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Postamputation Cognitive Impairment Is Related to Worse Perceived Physical Function Among Middle-Aged and Older Prosthesis Users. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Middle-aged and older prosthesis users with cognitive impairment reported worse perceived physical function than those without. Screening for cognitive changes during rehabilitation may help identify patients who need tailored support to improve mobility outcomes. PT OT Cohort 2022 The Readiness for Return to Work Scale; Does it Help in Evaluation of Return to Work? Journal of occupational rehabilitation The Norwegian version of the Readiness for Return to Work scale fails to measure a single clear construct and poorly predicts who returns to work. Clinicians should not use this questionnaire in the clinic or to evaluate interventions, as its subscales are too small and unstable to guide treatment. PT OT RCT 2022 Music Upper Limb Therapy-Integrated Provides a Feasible Enriched Environment and Reduces Post-stroke Depression: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Group music therapy reduced depression and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor compared to home exercises. However, home exercises improved actual motor function and sensation, while music therapy only improved self-perceived recovery. Neither was superior on the primary motor outcome. OT Systematic Review 2022 In What Ways Does Health Related Stigma Affect Sustainable Employment and Well-Being at Work? A Systematic Review. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Stigma from employers, co-workers, health professionals, family and the person themselves was reported as a barrier to finding, keeping and feeling well at work. It does not test how to reduce that barrier. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Intra- and interpersonal effects of coping style and self-efficacy on anxiety, depression and life satisfaction in patient-partner couples after stroke. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Proactive coping and self-efficacy in stroke patients and their partners predicted lower anxiety and depression in both individuals over the first year. Intrapersonal effects were stronger, but a patient's coping style also reduced their partner's anxiety, supporting early screening of the couple rather than just the patient. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Using Machine Learning to Examine Suicidal Ideation After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems National Database Study. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation A machine learning model predicted suicidal ideation one year after TBI with excellent accuracy. Depressed mood and guilt were the strongest predictors, followed by anhedonia and concentration difficulties. Demographic and injury severity factors added no predictive value. This suggests screening for specific depression symptoms may be more useful than general risk factors. OT Survey 2022 Expectations of Mental Illness Disclosure Outcomes in the Work Context: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Dutch Workers. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Dutch workers mostly expected that disclosure of mental illness at work could improve authenticity and work adjustments, but many also expected contract renewal or promotion problems. Expectations varied by experience, gender, education and workplace atmosphere. ← Previous PAGE 19 OF 41 Next →
