PT OT SLP RCT 2021 Postconcussion Exercise Volume Associations With Depression, Anxiety, and Dizziness Symptoms, and Postural Stability: Preliminary Findings. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Concussed patients reporting high exercise volume had lower depression, anxiety, and dizziness scores and faster tandem gait times than those with low volume. Because this was a secondary analysis of a trial, exercise volume was self-reported and not randomized, so causality cannot be inferred. PT OT Qualitative 2021 Facilitators for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic: Online qualitative interviews comparing youth with and without disabilities. Disability and health journal Youth with and without disabilities described social support, money, keeping busy, and work-life balance as things that helped them cope during the pandemic. Youth with disabilities more often relied on family and government supports, while not commuting made remote work and school especially helpful. PT OT SLP Survey 2021 Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on health, financial worries, and perceived organizational support among people living with disabilities in Canada. Disability and health journal Workers with combined physical and mental disabilities reported the most concern about health and finances and the least support. However, these differences disappeared once job stress and unmet accommodation needs were considered. Employment conditions, not just disability status, drive these perceptions. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Perceived Injustice After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Perceived injustice levels were low and similar in mild brain injury and ankle fracture groups. However, feeling that the injury was unfair or permanent correlated strongly with more postconcussion, depressive, and stress symptoms in the brain injury group. PT OT Cohort 2021 Self-Reported and Objective Sleep Measures in Stroke Survivors With Incomplete Motor Recovery at the Chronic Stage. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Chronic stroke survivors report worse sleep and spend more time awake overnight than healthy controls. However, sleep quality does not correlate with upper limb motor impairment or time since stroke. Depressive symptoms are a stronger predictor of perceived sleep problems than physical disability. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Daily Variation in Sleep Quality is Associated With Health-Related Quality of Life in People With Spinal Cord Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation For people with spinal cord injury, sleeping well one night predicts feeling less pain, fatigue, and brain fog the next morning, but this effect fades by afternoon. Weekly sleep quality predicts overall health-related quality of life, but daily sleep duration does not. PT OT Cohort 2022 How Do Fluctuations in Pain, Fatigue, Anxiety, Depressed Mood, and Perceived Cognitive Function Relate to Same-Day Social Participation in Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury? Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation On days when people with spinal cord injury had more fatigue, depressed mood, or worse perceived cognitive function than usual, they reported less social participation. Pain and anxiety did not show same-day links; people with more pain overall participated less. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Repetitive Traumatic Brain Injury Among Older Adults. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Older adults with a first head injury face a 3% annual risk of a second one. Epilepsy, dementia, Parkinson's, depression, and atrial fibrillation significantly raise this risk. These factors should trigger aggressive fall prevention and close monitoring for further head trauma. OT RCT 2021 Effects of Peer Mentoring for Caregivers of Patients With Acquired Brain Injury: A Preliminary Investigation of Efficacy. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Peer mentoring did not increase caregiver participation in support services, but it significantly reduced caregiver stress at discharge and 30 days. The study was small and interrupted by the pandemic, so these results suggest a potential benefit that needs confirmation. PT OT Cohort 2021 Upper Limb Performance in Daily Life Approaches Plateau Around Three to Six Weeks Post-stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Upper limb use in daily life plateaued 3-6 weeks post-stroke, before impairment or capacity stabilized. This suggests motor habits form early. Clinicians should assess actual arm use, not just clinical test scores, to guide timely behavioral interventions. PT OT Cohort 2021 Timing of Health Service Use Among Truck Drivers After a Work-Related Injury or Illness. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Physical therapy was common for injured truck drivers, with 16 visits typical over 130 weeks, peaking 5 to 15 weeks after their compensation claim was lodged. Mental health care was used by only 6.3%, and mostly later. OT Other 2021 Cognitive Correlates of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Performance in Parkinson Disease Without Dementia. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation People with Parkinson disease without dementia needed more cueing and took longer on complex daily tasks, even when standard cognitive test scores were similar. Real task testing may reveal problems that standard tests miss. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 The Association Between Concussion History and Increased Symptom Severity Reporting Is Independent of Common Medical Comorbidities, Personality Factors, and Sleep Quality in Collegiate Athletes. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Collegiate athletes with more prior concussions reported higher symptom severity and distress, even after accounting for sleep quality and personality. Orthopedic injury history did not show this link, suggesting the symptoms reflect brain injury effects rather than general physical trauma. PT OT Cohort 2021 Cognitive Function is a Predictor of the Daily Step Count in Patients With Subacute Stroke With Independent Walking Ability: A Prospective Cohort Study. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Among subacute stroke patients who could walk independently, lower cognitive scores on admission predicted fewer daily steps at discharge. Physical measures like walking speed and motor function were not significant predictors in the final model. PT OT Survey 2022 Psychological and behavioral responses during the COVID-19 pandemic among individuals with mobility and/or self-care disabilities. Disability and health journal People with mobility or self-care disabilities reported higher mental distress during the pandemic, highest if both. Resilience was lower, and its link to lower distress was weakest when both disabilities were present. PT OT Other 2021 Reliability of Virtual Physical Performance Assessments in Veterans During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Virtual physical performance tests for older veterans showed high agreement between two remote assessors. This supports using video calls to track strength and mobility in telehealth, provided the clinician can see the full movement and account for home environment variables. PT OT Survey 2021 Adults with Loeys-Dietz syndrome and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: A cross-sectional study of life satisfaction. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Half of adults with rare connective tissue disorders reported overall life satisfaction, but satisfaction with sexual health, somatic health, and work was very low. High fatigue levels were strongly linked to dissatisfaction across multiple life domains, including daily activities and leisure. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Association of physical and mental symptoms with cognition in people with spinal cord injury. Rehabilitation psychology Most physical and mental symptoms did not correlate with objective cognitive test scores in people with spinal cord injury. Higher pain intensity was associated with worse attention. Anxiety and fatigue correlated with perceived cognitive dysfunction, but not necessarily with actual performance deficits. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2021 Systematic Review: Recommendations for Rehabilitation in ASD and ID From Clinical Practice Guidelines. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Most rehabilitation recommendations for autism and intellectual disability are based on expert opinion, not trials. Guidelines rarely address core symptoms, focusing instead on medication and co-occurring issues like sleep or behavior. Clinicians should treat these as suggestions rather than proven interventions. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Post-acute COVID-19 Syndrome Negatively Impacts Physical Function, Cognitive Function, Health-Related Quality of Life, and Participation. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Patients with post-acute COVID-19 reported severe fatigue, cognitive impairment, and reduced participation. Physical exertion triggered symptom exacerbation in 86% of patients, and full-time employment dropped from 76% to 41%. These findings suggest rehabilitation must account for post-exertional worsening. PT OT Systematic Review 2021 Effects of Telerehabilitation Interventions on Heart Failure Management (2015-2020): Scoping Review. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Telerehabilitation for heart failure patients often improves quality of life and physical capacity compared to standard care. It also shows high adherence. However, evidence for reducing depression and anxiety is mixed, with some studies showing no significant benefit. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Effect of multimorbidity and psychosocial factors on posttraumatic stress symptoms among post-9/11 veterans. Rehabilitation psychology Veterans with pain, mental health, or brain injury comorbidities reported higher PTSD severity than healthy peers. Self-efficacy, resilience, and social support explained nearly half the variance in PTSD symptoms. However, Black and Hispanic veterans reported greater PTSD severity than White veterans even with higher resilience and self-efficacy. PT OT SLP Other 2022 A delphi procedure on rehabilitation outcome for patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury; first phase of the Neurotraumatology Quality Registry (NET-QURE). Journal of rehabilitation medicine Experts agreed on specific outcome measures for 12 of 17 domains in moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Consensus was reached for tools assessing quality of life, pain, anxiety, depression, communication, and activities of daily living. PT OT Other 2021 Prevalence and risk factors for depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation in youth with persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). Brain injury Among youth with persistent post-concussive symptoms, 40% had significant depressive symptoms, one-quarter had significant anxiety symptoms, 14% reported thoughts of death or self-harm, and 8% thoughts of suicide; history of depression and lower sleep quality were linked to greater risk. PT OT Cohort 2022 Changes in Stroke Rehabilitation during the Sars-Cov-2 Shutdown in Switzerland. Journal of rehabilitation medicine During shutdown, 72% of 36 stroke survivors reported less outpatient therapy, sat more, and had slightly worse depression. Upper-limb usage did not worsen, and some motor measures improved after therapy restarted. OT Cohort 2021 Suicidal ideation after acute traumatic brain injury: A longitudinal actor-partner interdependence model of patients and caregivers in Latin America. Rehabilitation psychology Patients with acute traumatic brain injury who reported thoughts of death or self-harm in hospital had caregivers who were more likely to report them at the next assessment. The reverse association was not significant, and this does not prove one caused the other. OT Cohort 2021 The Role of Decision-Making in Psychological Wellbeing and Risky Behaviours in Autistic Adolescents Without ADHD: Longitudinal Evidence from the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders After accounting for background differences, autistic adolescents' decision quality was similar to peers, but they took longer to decide. Only in autistic adolescents, longer deciding was linked with greater happiness, higher self-esteem, and fewer antisocial behaviours. OT SLP Meta-Analysis 2021 IQ and Internalising Symptoms in Adolescents with ASD. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Adolescents with ASD and lower IQs reported significantly more anxiety, but parents did not. Higher IQs were linked to more depression. Clinicians must ask adolescents directly about anxiety rather than relying on parent reports, especially for those with lower cognitive abilities. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Sex Differences in Co-occurring Conditions Among Autistic Children and Youth in Florida: A Retrospective Cohort Study (2012-2019). Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 83,500 autistic children, girls had significantly higher odds of anxiety, mood disorders, intellectual disability, epilepsy, sleep, and GI issues than boys. Boys had higher odds of ADHD. This suggests clinicians should screen girls more aggressively for these co-occurring conditions. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Effect of COVID-19 stress on physical function performance and socioenvironmental factors of people with disabilities in Korea. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Higher stress during the pandemic was linked to more depression, greater dependence on others for daily tasks, and lower social participation. Better social attitudes, family support, and accessible services were associated with improved independence and participation, regardless of stress levels. PT OT Survey 2022 The impact of COVID-19 on the lifestyles of adolescents with cerebral palsy in the Southeast United States. Disability and health journal Most adolescents with cerebral palsy reported less exercise and less contact with friends and family during the pandemic. Many also had low mood or loss of interest. These are self-reported experiences, not evidence that any treatment worked. OT Other 2022 Implications of Employment Changes Caused by COVID-19 on Mental Health and Work-Related Psychological Need Satisfaction of Autistic Employees: A Mixed-Methods Longitudinal Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic employees who kept working in person showed no rise in distress. Those forced to work from home reported higher emotional distress and lower feelings of competence and autonomy, despite valuing sensory control. Losing employment significantly increased distress. OT SLP Other 2022 Brief Report: Role of Parent-Reported Executive Functioning and Anxiety in Insistence on Sameness in Individuals with Germline PTEN Mutations. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parent-reported executive function difficulties, particularly with shifting attention, and anxiety are strongly linked to insistence on sameness in individuals with PTEN mutations, ASD, and macrocephaly. Set-shifting was the unique independent predictor, suggesting it as a key target for intervention. OT Cohort Strangulation as an Acquired Brain Injury in Intimate-Partner Violence and Its Relationship to Cognitive and Psychological Functioning: A Preliminary Study. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Women with a history of strangulation-related loss of consciousness performed worse on memory tests and reported higher PTSD and depression than those without such history. These differences persisted even after accounting for other brain injuries, suggesting specific cognitive and psychological consequences of strangulation. OT SLP Survey 2022 Health Services Use and Costs in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Germany: Results from a Survey in ASD Outpatient Clinics. Journal of autism and developmental disorders German ASD outpatient clinic patients averaged 3287 EUR in yearly health service costs. Occupational therapy was the most used non-doctor service. Higher costs were seen with female sex, lower IQ, and Asperger syndrome. OT SLP Pilot 2022 Identifying Predictors of Momentary Negative Affect and Depression Severity in Adolescents with Autism: An Exploratory Ecological Momentary Assessment Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 17 autistic boys, poor social interaction quality predicted higher momentary negative affect. Early puberty showed more people boosted positive mood, while late puberty showed only interaction quality mattered. Emotional instability predicted parent-reported depression, but affect autocorrelation did not. OT Other 2022 Mental Health and Health Behaviour Changes for Mothers of Children with a Disability: Effectiveness of a Health and Wellbeing Workshop. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mothers of children with disabilities reported lower depression, anxiety, and stress scores six weeks after attending a one-day workshop. They also felt more empowered and reported better wellbeing for themselves and their children, though no changes were seen in family cohesion or community access. OT Other 2022 Received Social Support Scale for Persons with Serious Mental Illness: Preliminary scale development and validation study. Rehabilitation psychology A new questionnaire asked adults with serious mental illness how often they received day-to-day, mental-health, and appointment support. It fit three separate support areas, but three-week stability and links to other measures were modest. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 The prevalence, characteristics, and psychiatric correlates of traumatic brain injury in incarcerated individuals: an examination in two independent samples. Brain injury Traumatic brain injury affects half of incarcerated men and women, often from assault or car accidents. In women, a history of mild TBI linked to higher PTSD symptoms and depression diagnoses. Men showed no significant rise in mental illness symptoms from mild TBI, though alcohol use disorder rates were higher in both sexes. PT OT Survey 2022 Healthcare Disruptions and Use of Telehealth Services Among People With Multiple Sclerosis During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation People with MS experienced fewer healthcare disruptions than healthy controls, but still missed 38% to 50% of medical appointments. Telehealth use was high and satisfaction was very high, especially for mental health. Functional limitations predicted greater telehealth use. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Effects of X Chromosome Monosomy and Genomic Imprinting on Observational Markers of Social Anxiety in Prepubertal Girls with Turner Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Girls with Turner syndrome showed significantly more gaze avoidance than controls, but no other behavioral or verbal differences emerged. Parents reported broader social deficits, yet these ratings did not correlate with the observed behaviors. OT Qualitative 2021 The experiences of mothers of children and young people with intellectual disabilities during the first COVID-19 lockdown period. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Mothers reported feeling abandoned by withdrawn services and overwhelmed by constant care duties, leading to worsened mental health. However, six described reduced challenging behaviours in their children due to less daily pressure. The study highlights the strain of isolation and the benefit of lower demands. OT Case-Control 2022 Health and cognition among adults with and without Traumatic Brain Injury: A matched case-control study. Brain injury One year after moderate-to-severe TBI, adults were more likely to report anxiety/depression/other emotional disorder, chronic sleep problems, and stroke than matched uninjured adults. Poor self-rated health also tracked with much lower thinking scores in TBI than controls. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2022 Traumatic Brain Injury and Early Onset Dementia in Post 9-11 Veterans. Brain injury Post-9/11 Veterans with a history of traumatic brain injury had three times the odds of early-onset dementia compared to matched controls. The risk was nearly six times higher for frontotemporal dementia than for Alzheimer's, suggesting TBI may specifically drive FTD pathology. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Advanced brain age in deployment-related traumatic brain injury: A LIMBIC-CENC neuroimaging study. Brain injury In male veterans, a history of deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury was associated with a brain appearing 0.95 years older than expected. No such link was found in females or in longitudinal data. Higher PTSD, depression, and alcohol misuse scores were also associated with older brain age. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Autism Spectrum Disorder and Mental Health Problems: Patterns of Difficulties and Longitudinal Trajectories in a Population-Based Twin Sample. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism had far more emotional, behavioural and peer difficulties than their non-autistic twins or typical peers. These problems were common, often multiple, and persisted or increased into early adolescence, rather than settling down. PT OT RCT 2022 Intensive Circuit Class Therapy in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. Journal of rehabilitation medicine 12 weeks of supervised circuit training improved balance, walking, fatigue, and mood in 23 people with relapsing-remitting MS. The control group showed no change. This suggests group physiotherapy is a viable option for mild-to-moderate disability. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 "It's Not Just in My Head, and It's Not Just Irrelevant": Autistic Negotiations of Menopausal Transitions. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults described menopause as confusing due to difficulty interpreting bodily sensations and a lack of prior information. They valued clinicians who validated their experiences rather than dismissing symptoms as psychological, and found peer support helpful but insufficient compared to evidence-based guidance. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 "Together in a pressure cooker": Parenting children with disabilities during the COVID-19 lockdown. Disability and health journal Parents described losing school-based therapy and support as forcing them to become their child's teacher and therapist overnight. They reported stress, guilt, and job strain from juggling these roles alone, though some found closer family bonds in the downtime. PT OT Other 2022 Fatigue is Associated with Reduced Participation and Health-Related Quality of Life Five Years After Perimesencephalic Subarachnoid Haemorrhage: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine 5 years after perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage, patients with fatigue reported less frequent participation, more restrictions, and worse quality of life. Fatigue severity stayed associated with these outcomes after depression, anxiety, hypertension and comorbidity were considered. ← Previous PAGE 16 OF 41 Next →
