PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Parent Questionnaires in the Evaluation of Pre-School Children Referred for Neuropsychiatric Assessment. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parent questionnaires tracked with autism severity, but the ABC missed many children with higher IQs. The ESSENCE-Q identified almost all diagnosed cases regardless of ability. Use these tools as guides for assessment, not as standalone diagnostic proof. PT OT SLP Case Series 2022 Neuropathic Pain in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19: A Prospective Case Series. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation Eight hospitalized patients developed neuropathic pain during acute COVID-19. Most had mild to moderate symptoms. Pain improved with pregabalin and amitriptyline, but half still had mild pain at one month. It is unclear if the medication or the steroids caused the relief. PT OT Survey 2021 Resilience and associated characteristics in adults with spina bifida. Developmental medicine and child neurology Adults with spina bifida reported lower resilience than the general population. Higher resilience was linked to older age, higher household education, prior urological surgeries, and better physical function. These factors may help identify who needs support. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Facing Invalidation: A Further Challenge when Living with Chronic Widespread Pain. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Patients with chronic widespread pain reported frequent invalidation, particularly from social services and medical professionals. Higher levels of discounting and lack of understanding were associated with worse mental health and more anxiety or depression, but not with physical health status. PT OT Survey 2022 Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on daily life, mood, and behavior of adults with Down syndrome. Disability and health journal Caregivers reported that many adults with Down syndrome lost jobs or day programs, had more anxiety, irritability, sadness, sleep problems, and less exercise. Some became happier, but most impacts were stressful. PT OT SLP RCT 2021 Surgery versus botulinum neurotoxin A to reduce drooling and improve daily life for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities: a randomized controlled trial. Developmental medicine and child neurology Bilateral submandibular duct ligation reduced drooling and daily care demands more effectively than botulinum toxin A at 8 and 32 weeks. Surgery caused more short-term adverse events but no long-term complications. It improved satisfaction with family relationships and life in general. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Caregiving, Participation, and Quality of Life of Closest Next of Kin of Persons Living with Spinal Cord Injury in Norway. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Most caregivers of people with spinal cord injury in Norway reported good quality of life and happiness in caring. However, one-quarter experienced high strain, especially emotional adjustment. Injury severity predicted practical help given, but not emotional burden or overall well-being. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Empathy and Anxiety in Young Girls with Fragile X Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Girls with fragile X syndrome reported higher empathy and anxiety than matched peers. High cognitive empathy linked to lower separation anxiety. This suggests understanding others' perspectives may buffer against distress, offering a target for future support. OT Other 2021 Investigating the structure of trait rumination in autistic adults: A network analysis. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Self-critical thoughts and questioning why one has problems were the most central symptoms in the rumination network. Sadness and guilt acted as the strongest bridges linking these ruminative patterns to depressive symptoms in autistic adults. OT Case Series 2022 Robotic Table and Serious Games for Integrative Rehabilitation in the Early Poststroke Phase: Two Case Reports. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Two people early after stroke added robotic table game training to usual physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Both showed gains in arm function, but the table's contribution cannot be separated from usual therapy or natural recovery. PT OT Pilot 2021 Quality of life and life-space mobility after total knee arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a pilot case-controlled study. Journal of physical therapy science Five months after knee replacement, patients with rheumatoid arthritis had similar muscle strength and walking speed to those with osteoarthritis. However, they went out of town significantly less often and reported worse daily life function. Physical recovery did not translate into broader life participation. PT OT Other 2022 A novel tablet-based application for assessment of manual dexterity and its components: a reliability and validity study in healthy subjects. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In healthy adults, a 20-minute tablet app gave repeatable scores for finger recognition, rhythm, sequences and line tracking, but not for unwanted finger movements. It detected age-related slowing, yet did not match Box and Block or Moberg pick-up. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Substance use and misuse patterns and disability status in the 2020 US National Alcohol Survey: A contributing role for chronic pain. Disability and health journal Adults with disabilities were less likely to drink but more likely to misuse prescription drugs and use nicotine daily. Chronic pain accounted for 17–38% of the link between disability and substance use, suggesting unmanaged pain drives self-medication rather than disability itself. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Executive function as measured by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-2: children and adolescents with Williams syndrome. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with Williams syndrome show severe executive function deficits, particularly in cognitive regulation. Inhibit difficulties predict attention problems, while Shift difficulties predict anxiety. These parent-reported deficits are unrelated to intellectual ability but strongly linked to poor adaptive living skills. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 A national profile of substance use disorder among Medicaid enrollees on the autism spectrum or with intellectual disability. Disability and health journal Substance use disorder prevalence rose fastest among Medicaid enrollees with autism between 2008 and 2012. Depression doubled the risk of substance use disorder across all groups. Cannabis was the most common substance for those with autism, while alcohol dominated for those with intellectual disability. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 Perceptions of function and recovery among persons with stroke and care partners. Rehabilitation psychology Most stroke survivors rated their recovery higher than their partners did, and partners often viewed daily tasks as harder for them. These gaps were linked to higher caregiver strain and depression. Screening both partners' perceptions helps identify couples at risk. OT Other 2022 Factors associated with recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder in combat veterans: The role of deployment mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Rehabilitation psychology Veterans recovered from PTSD reported lower depression, pain, and neurobehavioral symptoms, better sleep, and higher quality of life than those with current PTSD. Cognitive scores did not differ by recovery alone, but recovered veterans with deployment mTBI had better processing speed. OT Qualitative 2022 Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours Among Autistic Adults Presenting to the Psychiatric Emergency Department: An Exploratory Chart Review. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Half of autistic adults presenting to a psychiatric emergency department had suicidal thoughts identified only during routine screening, not as their chief complaint. Charts showed suicidal thoughts often emerged during life transitions or interpersonal conflicts, with 62% of patients perseverating on these thoughts. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Using the Multidimensional Model of Acceptance to Investigate How Different Facets of Acceptance are Related to Quality of Life Following Spinal Cord Injury. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Acceptance predicts quality of life in spinal cord injury even after controlling for depression and anxiety. Focusing on value-change and behavioural engagement matters most. Letting go of control showed weak links. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Objective and subjective psychosocial outcomes in adults with autism spectrum disorder: A 6-year longitudinal study. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Over six years, autistic adults showed a small increase in objective functioning and subjective well-being. Higher intellectual ability predicted better objective outcomes, while co-occurring psychiatric conditions and more autism traits predicted lower initial levels. No gender differences were found in outcomes or change over time. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Diagnostic- and sex-based differences in depression symptoms in autistic and neurotypical early adolescents. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic early adolescents reported more severe depressive symptoms than neurotypical peers, with females reporting higher severity than males. These effects were additive, meaning autistic females had the highest scores. Autistic youth specifically endorsed more interpersonal problems and negative self-esteem, including beliefs of worthlessness. OT Cohort 2021 The impact of COVID-19 on the social inclusion of older adults with an intellectual disability during the first wave of the pandemic in Ireland. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Older adults with intellectual disabilities interviewed after the first lockdown reported significantly higher access to and use of technology, and more frequent family contact, than those interviewed before. Contact with friends and participation in social activities showed no significant difference. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Brief Report: The Influence of Autism Severity and Depression on Self-Determination Among Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autism symptom severity, not depression, predicted lower self-determination in 59 young adults. While more severe autism correlated with higher depression, only autism severity uniquely explained reduced self-determination. Clinical focus should target autism-related barriers to goal-setting rather than mood alone. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 "I Spent Most of Freshers in my Room"-A Qualitative Study of the Social Experiences of University Students on the Autistic Spectrum. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Ten autistic university students described being selective about friends, valuing quality over quantity, and hiding their diagnosis from peers due to fear of stereotypes. They found quiet spaces, non-alcohol events, and social mentoring helpful. This is one small group's experience, not evidence that any approach works. OT Other 2022 Brief Report: Risk and Protective Factors Associated with Depressive Symptoms among Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic adults who took part in at least one community activity had lower depression scores than those who did not (median 8 vs 12 on the PHQ-9). Family history of anxiety or depression was associated with more suicidal thoughts. OT SLP Survey 2022 The Impact of COVID-19 on Anxiety and Worries for Families of Individuals with Special Education Needs and Disabilities in the UK. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Caregiver anxiety and awareness of the pandemic predicted higher anxiety in children with special needs, more than age or diagnosis did. Anxiety and worries about lost routine rose sharply in both SEND children and their siblings when schools closed. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Risk factors for development of long-term mood and anxiety disorder after pediatric traumatic brain injury: a population-based, birth cohort analysis. Brain injury Children who sustained a traumatic brain injury at age 5 or older had a higher risk of developing anxiety or mood disorders by age 25 than those injured before age 5. Injury severity and other factors showed weaker or inconsistent associations. OT Cohort Adolescent Chronic Health Conditions and School Disconnectedness. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Fifteen-year-olds with chronic health conditions, especially developmental or behavioral ones, reported feeling less part of school, more trouble with teachers and peers, and more bullying than peers without conditions. OT SLP Survey 2022 Factors Contributing to Psychological Ill-Effects and Resilience of Caregivers of Children with Developmental Disabilities During a Nation-wide Lockdown During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of autism and developmental disorders During lockdown, over half of caregivers of children with developmental disabilities screened positive for depression and anxiety. Poor guidance from therapists and difficulty keeping children indoors were key predictors of distress, while higher resilience was linked to better support. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Adding the missing voice: How self-report of autistic youth self-report on an executive functioning rating scale compares to parent report and that of youth with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or neurotypical development. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic youth self-report executive function problems that match their parents' overall pattern but are consistently less severe. Their own reports identify flexibility as a primary struggle, validating the use of self-report alongside parent forms to capture the patient's perspective. OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 People with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities engaging in virtual social contact: A systematic review of the feasibility and effects on well-being. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID Virtual social contact is feasible for people with intellectual disabilities, including those with severe needs using adapted devices. Effects on well-being are mixed, with some users reporting happiness and others frustration or exclusion. Support from staff and family is often lacking. PT OT RCT 2022 Swallowing Exercise During Head and Neck Cancer Treatment: Results of a Randomized Trial. Dysphagia Swallowing exercises plus progressive resistance training during head and neck cancer radiotherapy did not improve swallowing safety versus usual care. Some mouth opening and symptom benefits appeared, but the two exercise types cannot be separated. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Early-Life Environmental and Child Factors Associated with the Presence of Disruptive Behaviors in Seven-Year-Old Children with Autistic Traits in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Many early-life factors link to disruptive behaviors in autistic children, not just autism itself. Smoking, difficult temperament, and family stress were specific to the disruptive group. Screen for these to tailor behavioral support. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Seven Domains of Persisting Problems after Hospital-treated Covid-19 Indicate a Need For a Multiprofessional Rehabilitation Approach. Journal of rehabilitation medicine After hospital-treated COVID-19, many survivors reported lasting problems in seven areas: vision, physical function, cognition, mood, swallowing, voice, and mental fatigue. In the subgroup with rehabilitation needs, 66% had problems in at least three areas. OT Other 2022 The Importance of Understanding Individual Differences of Emotion Regulation Abilities in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Half of 129 young people with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome had parent-reported difficulty regulating emotions, compared with 8% of 116 typically developing peers. The other half fell in the typical range, so assess each person rather than assuming emotion problems. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 In their own words: The impact of subtle language and communication difficulties as described by autistic girls and boys without intellectual disability. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic children without intellectual disability reported word-finding, listening, group conversation and explaining emotions as breaking down communication. They linked these difficulties to stress, avoidance and missed daily activities, and named written supports and familiar topics as helpful. OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Caregiver perspectives on the impact of uncertainty on the everyday lives of autistic children and their families. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Parents of autistic children described school and routine changes as major sources of anxiety. Children reacted with repetitive questions, shutdowns or avoidance, leading to missed education and social opportunities. Parents managed this through extensive preparation, reassurance and family accommodation. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 A community-engaged approach to examining barriers and facilitators to accessing autism services in Korean immigrant families. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Korean immigrant parents described barriers to autism services including long waitlists, school dismissals, and stigma. They valued family-centered care, bilingual providers, and community organizations. These findings highlight specific communication and navigation needs for therapists working with this population. OT SLP Other 2022 Cognitive processes in autism: Repetitive thinking in autistic versus non-autistic adults. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic adults reported more repetitive thinking than non-autistic controls, but their thoughts were not more restricted, negative, or visual. The study suggests that obsessive thinking, rather than generic repetition, may drive insistence on sameness behaviours. PT OT Cohort 2022 Psychological Distress, Pain and Insurance Claims Negatively Affect Long-Term Health-Related Quality of Life After Road Traffic Injuries. Journal of rehabilitation medicine At 12 months after road traffic injury, higher early pain, psychological distress and insurance claims were linked with poorer physical and mental quality of life, even after accounting for injury severity. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Feasibility of Virtual Reality Exercises at Home for Post-COVID-19 Condition: Cohort Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Most patients with long COVID found home virtual reality exercises acceptable and usable. They used them for about 95 to 115 minutes weekly. Dizziness was a common side effect. Improvements in physical function were seen, but the study design cannot prove the exercises caused them. OT Survey 2022 Child and Parental Mental Health as Correlates of School Non-Attendance and School Refusal in Children on the Autism Spectrum. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents reported children on the autism spectrum missed 6.3 full days and 3.8 half days over 20 school days. School refusal accounted for 57.2% of full-day absences. Parents not in paid work were linked to more absences. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2022 Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Measures in Clinical Research in Patients With Stroke: A Systematic Literature Review. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation PROMIS measures are widely used in stroke research but rarely follow international guidelines for timing or reporting. Most data comes from US outpatient clinics with high-functioning patients, and inconsistent scoring directions make comparing results across studies impossible. PT OT Other 2022 TWIICE One powered exoskeleton: effect of design improvements on usability in daily life as measured by the performance in the CYBATHLON race. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation One experienced pilot with spinal cord injury completed a daily-life obstacle course 40% faster with the updated TWIICE One exoskeleton. Design changes to the foot and control modes improved performance, but data from a single athlete cannot predict outcomes for typical patients. OT Cohort 2022 Neurocognitive functioning of children with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disorders: profile characteristics and predictors of behavioural problems. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Children with mild intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disorders showed major weaknesses in processing speed and working memory. However, these cognitive deficits did not predict behavioural problems. Verbalising during tasks and better visual-spatial skills were linked to internalising symptoms, while no consistent pattern emerged for externalising behaviours. OT SLP Other 2022 Brief Report: Initial Evidence of Depressive Symptom Disparities among Black and White Transition Age Autistic Youth. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Black autistic transition-age youth reported higher depressive symptoms than White autistic peers, but rates of clinical depression did not differ. The sample was small, so these findings suggest a need for further research rather than a confirmed disparity. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 COVID-19 risk: Adult Medicaid beneficiaries with autism, intellectual disability, and mental health conditions. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Adults with autism, intellectual disability, or mental health conditions on Medicaid had significantly higher odds of living in congregate settings, receiving in-home care, and having severe comorbidities like obesity and chronic lung disease, increasing their COVID-19 exposure and severity risk. OT Other 2022 Experience of adults with upper-limb difference and their views on sensory feedback for prostheses: a mixed methods study. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Adults with upper-limb differences said the value of prosthetic sensory feedback would be trust in the device, not a new sensation. They wanted reliable, comfortable, adjustable feedback that complements vision and socket cues. OT SLP Survey 2022 Experience of Autistic Children and Their Families During the Pandemic: From Distress to Coping Strategies. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Most parents and many autistic children found the pandemic stressful. Parents reported routines, understanding needs, and social contact helped; lost services, isolation, and school demands hindered. Children valued electronics, while parents often saw too much access as a barrier. PT OT Cohort 2022 Effect of life-space mobility on subjective well-being in aged home-based rehabilitation users with different levels of independence in activities of daily living. Journal of physical therapy science For home-based rehab users who are mostly independent, greater life-space mobility strongly correlated with better subjective well-being. This link was absent in those with moderate or severe disabilities. Expanding community access may support well-being in higher-functioning patients. ← Previous PAGE 17 OF 41 Next →
