What it does not show

The findings are based on parent or carer report, not independent observation or measurement. Parents recalled their child's usual week before lockdown, so answers about before lockdown could be affected by recall bias. It was a survey at one time point, so it reports perceived changes rather than proving that lockdown restrictions caused the declines. The paper says 3 respondents were excluded for incomplete data, but the demographic table is labelled n = 125, so the analysed number is unclear. The sample was recruited in Gloucestershire, UK, and the authors say results are expected to be generalisable to children and young adults with a disability living in the UK. Some respondents recorded both physical and intellectual disabilities for their child, so groups overlap.

Declared interests

Funding statement says none. The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that lockdown improved activity for most participants. 61% of parents reported negative physical changes, over 90% reported worse mental health, and only 18% reported much more activity in the last 7 days.
