WHAT IT FOUND

Adolescents in Indian government schools rated quality of life around half the possible score, highest for social relationships.

Older age was linked to better well-being scores, while failing a back-stretch test was linked to lower scores.

Key findings

01The mean transformed quality-of-life scores were 55.6 physical, 57.2 psychosocial, 72.3 social relationship, and 61.2 environmental on a 0-100 scale.

02Failing the non-dominant back-stretch test was associated with lower physical, psychosocial, and environmental domain scores in the multivariable model.

03Older age was associated with higher psychosocial and environmental domain scores, with scores improving as age increased.

What it does not show

The study measured associations at one point in time, so it cannot show that any factor caused better or worse quality of life. It included only school-going adolescents in government schools in one division of Uttarakhand, so it may not apply to adolescents outside school, in other regions, or with different backgrounds. Students who were sick, had a condition making physical activity unsafe, or answered yes to a physical activity readiness question were excluded, so it says little about adolescents with illness or activity limitations. Quality of life and many exposures were self-reported, and the sex-life item was replaced, which may affect comparability with other WHOQOL-BREF studies. The number of districts, schools, and students selected was partly based on convenience and budgetary constraints. Many comparisons were made.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that improving back-stretch flexibility will raise quality of life. This was a cross-sectional survey, so it shows association, not cause.
