SLP Other 2020 Efficacy of Videostroboscopy and High-Speed Videoendoscopy to Obtain Functional Outcomes From Perioperative Ratings in Patients With Vocal Fold Mass Lesions. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation HSV+DKG gave more usable and more consistent ratings of vocal fold vibration than videostroboscopy. Videostroboscopy could not rate 14.5% of observations because images were asynchronous, so HSV+DKG may help when stroboscopy fails. SLP RCT 2020 Efficacy of Voice Therapy in Improving Vocal Function in Adults Irradiated for Laryngeal Cancers: A Pilot Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Vocal function exercises plus hygiene counseling improved the physical domain of voice handicap and several objective measures, while hygiene alone did not. The small sample size and unequal group attention mean these results are preliminary and cannot confirm efficacy. SLP Case Report 2020 Longitudinal Case Study of Transgender Voice Changes Under Testosterone Hormone Therapy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In one transmasculine speaker, testosterone lowered pitch but preserved singing range in semitones. Listeners perceived the voice as male after 37 weeks. Voice quality remained healthy despite some acoustic changes. This single case suggests pitch range loss is not inevitable, but findings cannot be generalized. SLP Other 2020 Vocal Fundamental Frequency and Sound Pressure Level in Charismatic Speech: A Cross-Gender and -Language Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Political leaders adjust pitch and volume to match their audience. They use higher pitch and wider ranges when addressing large groups to persuade, but lower pitch and narrower ranges when speaking to peers or in informal interviews. This suggests vocal dominance is context-dependent. SLP Other 2020 Method for Vertical Calibration of Laser-Projection Transnasal Fiberoptic High-Speed Videoendoscopy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new calibration method allows a laser-projection endoscope to measure vertical vocal fold movement with 1.7% to 4.7% error. Accuracy is highest when the scope is close to the tissue, but this is a technical validation, not a clinical trial. SLP Case Report 2020 Transmasculine Voice Modification: A Case Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A single session of manual laryngeal therapy with active voicing lowered pitch and resonance in one transmasculine client, making the voice sound more masculine to listeners. These changes disappeared after three days, so this is not evidence the technique works long-term. SLP Other 2021 Laser-Calibrated System for Transnasal Fiberoptic Laryngeal High-Speed Videoendoscopy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A green laser grid fitted to a flexible laryngoscope is designed to provide calibrated horizontal and vertical measurements in high-speed vocal fold recordings. It was tested only for visibility in one male subject. SLP Other 2021 Effects of Varying Lengths and Diameters During Straw Phonation on an Excised Canine Model. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In excised canine larynges, straws of 5-25 cm and 9-15 mm diameter lowered the pressure needed to start phonation. The 3 mm diameter often blocked airflow entirely. These findings explain the mechanics of straw phonation but do not prove clinical benefit in humans. SLP Other 2021 Different Vibratory Conditions Elicit Different Structural and Biological Vocal Fold Changes in an In-Vivo Rabbit Model of Phonation. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In rabbits, phonation with vocal fold contact produced the most disrupted mucosal blanket, thinner epithelium than control, and greater blood vessel labeling than non-contact phonation. Both phonation patterns compressed deeper tissue. The vibration patterns did not model human voice therapy. SLP Other 2021 Medial Surface Dynamics as a Function of Subglottal Pressure in a Canine Larynx Model. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In excised dog larynges, the timing difference between the top and bottom of the vocal folds changes with air pressure, contradicting fixed clinical assumptions. Current video methods miss the top fold's movement during closing, limiting how we understand voice production mechanics. SLP Case-Control 2021 Effects of Vocal Intensity and Fundamental Frequency on Cepstral Peak Prominence in Patients with Voice Disorders and Vocally Healthy Controls. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Louder voice production significantly increases the acoustic measure of voice quality (CPPS), independent of pathology. A quiet speaker may score lower than a loud one with the same vocal health. Clinicians must control for sound pressure level when interpreting these scores. SLP Other 2021 A computational study of the effects of vocal fold stiffness parameters on voice production. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Lengthwise stiffness in the ligament layer had the largest effect on pitch and airflow in a computer model of vocal fold vibration. Cover stiffness was small overall, but changing sideways stiffness in the cover layer could markedly alter open phase and closing speed. SLP Cohort 2021 Perceived Control, Voice Handicap, and Barriers to Voice Therapy. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Patients who felt they could currently control their voice problem reported less voice handicap. This link held even after accounting for personality. Higher perceived control also predicted fewer barriers to therapy, such as finding exercises strange or hard to translate. SLP Other 2021 Developing Clinically Relevant Scales of Breathy and Rough Voice Quality. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Twenty-five listeners rated synthetic breathy and rough sounds consistently. Researchers defined 1 breathiness unit at 18 dB signal-to-noise ratio and 1 roughness unit at -27 dB modulation depth. No real patient voices were rated. SLP Narrative Review 2021 Exercise Science and the Vocalist. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation SLP Cohort 2020 Influence of Inhalation Injury on Incidence, Clinical Profile and Recovery Pattern of Dysphagia Following Burn Injury. Dysphagia In 38 burn patients with confirmed inhalation injury, 34 had swallowing problems and 78.9% were severe at first assessment. Most recovered by discharge, but reported mean time to start oral intake was 24.69 days and to resolve dysphagia 29.79 days. SLP Other 2020 Swallow Safety in Infant Pigs With and Without Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Lesion. Dysphagia In infant pigs, recurrent laryngeal nerve lesion increased penetration without clearance in the younger pigs, but aspiration rates were similar across groups. By the older age, lesioned pigs resembled controls. This is animal data, not human feeding evidence. SLP Cohort 2020 Perception of Child-Directed Versus Adult-Directed Emotional Speech in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Users. Ear and hearing Children with cochlear implants recognized emotions better in exaggerated child-directed speech than in normal adult-directed speech. For adult-directed speech, longer implant experience predicted better recognition, while nonverbal IQ predicted success with child-directed speech. SLP Other 2021 Swallow Safety is Determined by Bolus Volume During Infant Feeding in an Animal Model. Dysphagia Larger bolus size was the primary predictor of unsafe swallows in infant pigs. Term infants swallowed larger volumes and experienced more penetration and aspiration than preterm infants, regardless of nerve damage. SLP Other 2021 Correlation of Temporal Parameters of Laryngeal Excursion by Using Force-Sensing Resistor Sensors with Hyoid Motion in Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study. Dysphagia Force-sensing resistor sensors on the neck tracked hyoid bone timing closely during swallowing in healthy adults. The sensors correlated strongly with video X-ray measurements, suggesting they could offer a radiation-free way to monitor swallowing timing in clinical settings. SLP Survey 2021 Attitudes Toward the Use of Voice-Assisted Technologies Among People With Parkinson Disease: Findings From a Web-Based Survey. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Most surveyed people with Parkinson disease owned a voice assistant, and some reported it helped them speak more clearly, louder, or with less repetition. Others reported it misunderstood their speech or reduced confidence. SLP Pilot 2021 Pilot Study of Quantitative Methods for Differentiating Pharyngeal Swallowing Mechanics by Dysphagia Etiology. Dysphagia Both kinematic analysis and CASM distinguished swallowing mechanics across four dysphagia etiologies. However, the study was a pilot with too few subjects to draw generalizable conclusions about clinical outcomes. SLP Other 2020 An exploratory model of speech intelligibility for healthy aging based on phonatory and articulatory measures. Journal of communication disorders Healthy older adults speak with less intelligible voices than younger adults in noise. The main drivers are reduced voice variability and slower tongue movements. Clinicians should treat voice quality and articulatory speed as primary targets for maintaining clear communication in aging. SLP Other 2021 Accuracy of the Language Environment Analyses (LENATM) system for estimating child and adult speech in laboratory settings. Journal of child language LENA accurately ranked which caregivers talked more, but overestimated their absolute word counts by about 25%. It poorly estimated child vocalizations, undercounting them at 1;7 and failing to capture developmental growth. Use it for relative adult speech, not absolute numbers. SLP Case Report 2020 Using AAC to unlock communicative potential in late-talking toddlers. Journal of communication disorders Two late-talking toddlers who did not improve with input-based therapy alone showed immediate gains in spoken words and multi-word phrases when low-tech AAC devices and output demands were added. This suggests AAC may help non-responders bypass speech motor difficulties. SLP Narrative Review 2021 Dysphagia Care Across the Continuum: A Multidisciplinary Dysphagia Research Society Taskforce Report of Service-Delivery During the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. Dysphagia Expert consensus says many dysphagia procedures can spread respiratory viruses. Use enhanced PPE, defer aerosol-generating tests if PPE is unavailable, screen by trained nurses, and use telehealth only with safeguards. No controlled trials show increased provider infection. SLP Case-Control 2020 Mechanisms of Impaired Swallowing on Thin Liquids Following Radiation Treatment for Oropharyngeal Cancer. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Swallowing safety after radiation depends on how quickly the airway closes. Patients who aspirated took significantly longer to close their laryngeal vestibule than those who did not. Incomplete closure was also strongly linked to aspiration, but overall residue levels did not differ significantly from healthy controls. SLP Other 2020 COVID-19 and ENT SLT services, workforce and research in the UK: A discussion paper. International journal of language & communication disorders This is an expert discussion paper on UK ENT speech and language therapy services during COVID-19. It describes service changes and research priorities. It reports no original patient outcomes, so there is no finding to act on. SLP Other 2021 A Preliminary Investigation of Whether HRCA Signals Can Differentiate Between Swallows from Healthy People and Swallows from People with Neurodegenerative Diseases. Dysphagia HRCA neck sensors, statistical methods, and machine learning correctly sorted 99% of thin liquid swallows from people with neurodegenerative diseases and healthy adults. This preliminary work did not explain which swallowing problem caused the difference. SLP Cohort 2020 Slowed Compensation Responses to Altered Auditory Feedback in Post-Stroke Aphasia: Implications for Speech Sensorimotor Integration. Journal of communication disorders People with aphasia took longer to adjust their pitch when their auditory feedback was altered, but corrected to the same extent as healthy speakers once time was accounted for. This suggests the mechanism for speech error correction remains intact, though it operates more slowly. SLP Cohort 2021 Camouflaging in Autism: Examining Sex-Based and Compensatory Models in Social Cognition and Communication. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Adolescent girls with autism showed fewer repetitive behaviors and more varied vocal tone during social tasks than boys. However, boys and girls had similar social affect scores. Clinicians should not assume girls are less impaired based on standard diagnostic observations alone. SLP Other 2021 The Influence of Airflow Via High-Flow Nasal Cannula on Duration of Laryngeal Vestibule Closure. Dysphagia In healthy young adults, higher airflow from a high-flow nasal cannula significantly increased the time the airway remained closed during swallowing. No aspiration occurred at any airflow level, and airway protection scores remained stable despite the change in closure duration. SLP Other 2020 An Updated Theoretical Framework for Vocal Hyperfunction. American journal of speech-language pathology Vocal hyperfunction splits into phonotraumatic and non-phonotraumatic types with distinct biomechanics. Phonotraumatic voice disorders involve high collision forces and tissue damage, while non-phonotraumatic cases show inefficient closure without trauma. Treatment paths differ, with surgery plus therapy required for full phonotraumatic recovery. PT OT SLP Survey 2021 Supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic from their own perspective. Research in developmental disabilities People with intellectual disabilities reported that lockdown support depended heavily on where they lived. Those in residential settings lost natural supports and relied on staff, while those at home depended on family. Contact with loved ones was the most missed aspect across all groups. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2020 Quantitative Videofluoroscopic Analysis of Swallowing Physiology and Function in Individuals With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Stable COPD patients showed no aspiration but had poor airway closure timing and weak pharyngeal muscle squeeze. Thickened liquids caused significant residue in this group, meaning texture modification requires careful evaluation rather than automatic prescription. SLP Case-Control 2020 Left hemispheric deficit in the sustained neuromagnetic response to periodic click trains in children with ASD. Molecular autism Children with autism showed a normal brain response to the rhythm of clicks but a delayed response to pitch processing in the left hemisphere. This suggests a specific low-level neural deficit in how the brain extracts sound patterns, distinct from general hearing issues. SLP Case-Control 2021 Differences Between Female Singers With Phonotrauma and Vocally Healthy Matched Controls in Singing and Speaking Voice Use During 1 Week of Ambulatory Monitoring. American journal of speech-language pathology Singers with vocal fold lesions spoke significantly more than healthy singers during a typical week, but did not sing more. This suggests that excessive talking, not just singing, may contribute to voice trauma in this population. SLP Survey 2021 Do We Need a Measure of Vocal Effort? Clinician's report of vocal effort in voice patients. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups Most voice clinicians treat vocal effort as a key symptom but lack a validated tool to measure it. They rely on the Voice Handicap Index, which was not designed for this purpose. Developing a specific, reliable measure of vocal effort is a priority. SLP Other 2021 Mapping Meta-Therapy in Voice Interventions onto the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System. Seminars in speech and language No patients or outcomes are reported. This conceptual mapping of voice therapy meta-therapy offers no clinical finding to act on. SLP Narrative Review 2021 Functional Voice Assessment and Therapy Methods Supported by Telepractice, VoiceEvalU8, and Estill Voice Training. Seminars in speech and language No study methods or results are reported. The narrative clinical review with hypothetical cases describes ideas for functional voice assessment and therapy but provides no evidence to change practice. SLP Pilot 2021 Integrating Behavior of Children with Profound Intellectual, Multiple, or Severe Motor Disabilities With Location and Environment Data Sensors for Independent Communication and Mobility: App Development and Pilot Testing. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies A new app let caregivers record children with severe or profound disabilities' sounds, movements, and facial expressions with location and weather data. It collected most data well, but indoor location detection was weakest, and no communication benefit was tested. SLP Cohort 2021 Rate of Communicative Gestures and Developmental Outcomes in Toddlers With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder During a Home Observation. American journal of speech-language pathology At home, toddlers with autism used fewer different gestures and communicated less often than toddlers with typical development. Their gesture inventory and overall communication rate were linked to later language and development scores. SLP Other 2021 Perceptions of people with aphasia about supporting reading with text-to-speech technology: A convergent mixed methods study. Journal of communication disorders Most people with aphasia were interested in text-to-speech reading support after trying it, but few used it daily. They valued choosing the voice and speed. The biggest worry was struggling to operate the device independently, not the cost. SLP Other 2021 Speech Movement Variability in People Who Stutter: A Vocal Tract Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR During fluent nonsense-word repetition, adults who stutter had more variable lip, tongue and soft palate movements than fluent controls. They also took longer on longer or more complex words. Variability did not track stuttering severity. SLP Narrative Review 2021 Exercise Science and the Vocalist. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This paper applies exercise science theories to voice training but provides no clinical data. It suggests that while typical speech does not require high muscle strength, professional voice use or pathology might benefit from fatigue management principles, though these ideas remain theoretical and untested in patients. SLP Case-Control 2021 The Frequency of Atypical and Extreme Values for Pharyngeal Phase Swallowing Measures in Mild Parkinson Disease Compared to Healthy Aging. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR People with mild Parkinson disease showed no more swallowing impairments than healthy older adults. Both groups had similar rates of slow swallowing and residue. Differences found favored compensation, not deficit. Small sample size means these results are preliminary. SLP Other 2021 Effect of Channel Interaction on Vocal Cue Perception in Cochlear Implant Users. Trends in hearing Triplet stimulation degraded voice perception and speech intelligibility in noise, but Paired stimulation did not. This suggests Paired modes may save battery life without harming speech performance, though the study used only high-performing users. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2021 Emerging Role of Ultrasound in Dysphagia Assessment and Intervention: A Narrative Review. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Ultrasound shows promise for bedside dysphagia screening, measuring hyoid movement and guiding injections. However, diagnostic accuracy varies widely, and no standard protocols exist. Use it only as a supplementary tool, not a replacement for formal swallowing assessments. SLP Other 2021 The Listener Effect in Multitalker Speech Segregation and Talker Identification. Trends in hearing In laboratory tests of separating overlapping speech, the biggest difference was between listeners, not between tasks or cues. Some normal-hearing students performed near the benchmark, others near chance. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Determining the Prevalence, Implementation Approaches, and Opinions of Above Cuff Vocalization: A Survey of Health Care Professionals. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Health professionals report huge variability in how they deliver above cuff vocalization, with no standard approach to timing, safety checks, or staff training. Most use it with fewer than ten patients a month, and few collect any outcome measures to track whether it is actually working. ← Previous PAGE 5 OF 17 Next →
