SLP Survey 2022 Speech and Language Practitioners' Experiences of Commercially Available Voice-Assisted Technology: Web-Based Survey Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Of 230 surveyed UK speech and language therapists, 181 had not used commercial voice assistants with clients, but 166 of those wanted to try them and 198 wanted training. Therapists who had used them reported speech feedback, independence and confidence, not evidence they improve speech. SLP Case-Control 2022 Auditory Attention Deployment in Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Young adults with autism performed worse than peers on a listening task with competing speakers. They did not show the typical drop in accuracy when switching attention, likely because maintaining attention was already difficult for them. SLP Other 2022 Retest Reliability for Complete Airway Interruption Systems of Aerodynamic Measurement. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Mechanical airflow interruption gives more consistent voice pressure and flow readings than the standard mouth-pressure method. For therapists using these tools, mechanical data is more reliable for tracking changes in patients with voice disorders. SLP Cohort 2022 Features of Mild-to-Moderate COVID-19 Patients With Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Self-reported voice change occurred in 188 of 702 patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, affecting 26.8%. It was more common in women and smokers, and patients with voice change reported more severe cough, swallowing difficulty, and pain. SLP Other 2021 The Effect of Single Harmonic Tuning on Vocal Loudness. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Tuning a single vocal harmonic increases perceived loudness less efficiently than adjusting the overall spectral slope. While single-harmonic tuning can boost loudness, it requires large sound pressure level changes and risks producing a whistle-like timbre, unlike the more natural dynamic control achieved by varying spectral slope. SLP Other 2021 Listener Age and Gender Diversity: Effects on Voice-based Perception of Gender. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Listener age and gender identity did not change how people judged the gender of a transmasculine speaker's voice. All groups rated the voice as female early in hormone therapy and male later, with no significant differences between young adults, older adults, or gender-diverse listeners. PT OT SLP Survey 2021 Identifying Concomitant Health Conditions in Individuals With Chronic Voice Problems. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Adults reporting a swallowing problem were nearly twice as likely to have chronic voice issues. Those with physical activity limitations were 1.7 times as likely. Respiratory and hormonal problems showed no significant link. Consider earlier laryngoscopy referral for patients with these specific comorbidities. SLP Other 2021 Effects of False Vocal Folds on Intraglottal Velocity Fields. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Narrower false vocal fold constriction strengthened intraglottal vortices, increased flow skewing and maximum flow declination rate, and raised sound intensity in excised canine larynges. This is a lab biomechanics finding, not evidence that a therapy works. SLP Other 2022 Probability-Based Best Sample Selection for Acoustic Analysis of Normal and Disordered Voices. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new method for selecting stable voice segments produced lower complexity scores and higher signal-to-noise ratios than three standard methods in both normal and disordered voices. This suggests it isolates the most stable part of a voice sample more reliably for acoustic analysis. SLP Survey 2022 Psychological Stress and Vocal Symptoms Among University Professors in Israel: Implications of the Shift to Online Synchronous Teaching During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation University professors reported significantly higher psychological stress during the sudden shift to online teaching, but their reported vocal symptoms did not increase. Stress was strongly linked to vocal symptoms only in those who already had high baseline stress levels. SLP Cohort 2022 Amount and Characteristics of Speaking and Singing Voice Use in Vocally Healthy Female College Student Singers During a Typical Week. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Vocally healthy female student singers spoke three times longer than they sang. Singing was more physically demanding per second, but speaking accounted for most of the weekly vocal load. These findings challenge the assumption that singing is the primary risk factor for voice disorders in this group. SLP Other 2021 3D-Printed Synthetic Vocal Fold Models. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A new 3D printing process made silicone vocal fold models that vibrated, but some needed a restraining plate and started vibrating at higher pressures than human speech. This is a lab tool, not evidence for patient care. SLP Other 2021 Quantification of the Intraglottal Pressure Induced by Flow Separation Vortices Using Large Eddy Simulation. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This paper uses computer simulations of airflow in idealized larynx models to study pressure changes during voice production. It contains no human participants or clinical outcomes, so it offers no direct guidance for treating patients. SLP Survey 2022 Songbirds Must Sing: How Artistic Voice Users Perceive Their Voice in Times of COVID-19. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Professional singers and actors reported significantly more voice difficulties, vocal training changes, and stress than non-professionals during lockdown. Those who worried more about their voice also reported higher stress levels. The study links voice concerns to psychological distress but does not prove one causes the other. SLP Other 2022 Quantitative Analysis of Vocal Fold Vibration using High-Speed Videoendoscopy in Children with and without Bilateral Lesions. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation On high-speed videoendoscopy, children with bilateral vocal fold lesions showed non-linear vocal fold vibration patterns, especially anterior to the lesion. Healthy children showed more linear patterns, with posterior and mid-fold movements often similar between groups. SLP Other 2022 Automated Relative Fundamental Frequency Algorithms for Use With Neck-Surface Accelerometer Signals. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Automated algorithms estimated relative fundamental frequency from neck accelerometer signals with errors similar to microphone algorithms. Offset values were more accurate than onset values, and results should be averaged across multiple utterances. SLP Other 2022 Implementation of Telemedicine in a Laryngology Practice During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned, Experiences Shared. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation SLP Narrative Review 2021 Terapia de voz en el contexto de la pandemia covid-19; recomendaciones para la práctica clínica. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This paper offers safety and practice guidelines for voice therapy during the pandemic, based on expert consensus rather than new patient data. It outlines risk levels for procedures and telepractice options, but reports no outcomes to change clinical practice. SLP Narrative Review 2021 Terapia Vocal No Contexto Da Pandemia Do Covid-19; Orientações Para A Prática Clínica. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Voice therapy carries high aerosol transmission risk. Telepractice is recommended to protect clinicians. If in-person care is essential, N95 masks and strict protocols are required. Voice therapy is not urgent; weigh risks before treating in person. SLP Narrative Review 2021 Voice Therapy in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Guidelines for Clinical Practice. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Voice therapy is classified as a high-risk aerosol-generating procedure. Clinicians should prioritize telepractice to minimize exposure, use N95 respirators and barriers for any in-person assessment, and limit face-to-face interactions to under 15 minutes. SLP Cohort 2021 Abnormalities of Aspiration and Swallowing Function in Survivors of Acute Respiratory Failure. Dysphagia One in three ICU survivors aspirated on swallowing tests. Reduced pharyngeal squeeze and upper airway swelling were the strongest independent predictors. Clinicians should assess these specific physiological and structural markers, not just general weakness, when evaluating post-extubation dysphagia. SLP Pilot 2021 Ultrasound: Validity of a Pocket-Sized System in the Assessment of Swallowing. Dysphagia A pocket-sized ultrasound scanner did not match videofluoroscopy for measuring how the hyoid and larynx move during swallowing in 20 healthy adults. It tracked hyoid movement during saliva swallows, but not during liquids or purees, and failed entirely for thyrohyoid approximation. SLP Other 2021 Effectiveness of Chin Tuck on Laryngeal Penetration: Quantitative Assessment. Dysphagia Chin tuck reduced laryngeal penetration depth on average, but a one-grade reduction occurred in only 26 of 76 patients. Confirm individual benefit before using it routinely. SLP Case Report 2022 Sorry, Not Sorry: The independent role of multiple phonetic cues in signaling the difference between two word meanings. Language and speech Listeners distinguished two meanings of 'sorry' above chance. Longer duration, falling pitch, and lower intensity signaled an apology, while shorter duration and rising pitch signaled 'excuse me.' SLP Other 2022 Voice and Emphasis in Arabic Coronal Stops: Evidence for Phonological Compensation. Language and speech Listeners identifying ambiguous Arabic stops relied on learned phonological patterns rather than just acoustic cues. When timing signals were unclear, they defaulted to the emphatic category. This suggests perception uses language-specific expectations to resolve ambiguity, not just raw sound data. SLP Pilot 2022 Swallowing Outcomes Following Voice Therapy in Multiple System Atrophy with Dysphagia: Comparison of Treatment Efficacy with Parkinson's Disease. Dysphagia After 16 LSVT-LOUD voice therapy sessions, 13 patients with Parkinson’s disease or MSA-C had better swallowing scores on a thin-liquid X-ray test. The study was small and uncontrolled, and MSA-C swallowing gains were not clearly kept at follow-up. SLP Other 2022 Mixed Consistencies in Dysphagic Patients: A Myth to Dispel. Dysphagia A thin mixed food (biscuits-with-milk) behaved like thin liquid: 11 of 20 had penetration and 4 aspirated. A thicker mixed food (vegetable soup) behaved like semisolid: 6 had penetration and 2 aspirated. Residue was similar across textures. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 The Relationships Between Radiation Dosage and Long-term Swallowing Kinematics and Timing in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Survivors. Dysphagia In long-term nasopharyngeal carcinoma survivors, higher radiation to most swallowing muscles linked to worse kinematics. However, higher radiation to the inferior pharyngeal constrictor appeared to preserve hyolaryngeal elevation, a counterintuitive finding that does not prove this structure is safe. SLP Cohort 2022 Physiology of Dysphagia in Those with Unilateral Vocal Fold Immobility. Dysphagia Among 61 patients with one immobile vocal fold who had swallow imaging, 14 aspirated. Most aspiration happened after laryngeal closure, and reduced pharyngeal constriction was more common in aspirators. Check pharyngeal clearance, not just vocal fold closure. SLP Qualitative 2022 Not Just Dyspnoea: Swallowing as a Concern for Adults with Laryngotracheal Stenosis Undergoing Airway Reconstruction. Dysphagia Patients with airway stenosis described swallowing difficulties as a hidden burden they managed alone by hiding symptoms or drinking water. They wanted clear explanations about why they were kept nil by mouth and felt frustrated by clinicians distrusting their ability to eat safely. PT SLP RCT 2021 Combined effect of pulmonary rehabilitation and music therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Journal of physical therapy science Adding music therapy to pulmonary rehabilitation raised an airflow ratio from 52.84% to 64.94% and 6-minute walk distance from 233.05 m to 306.30 m; depression and anxiety scores did not change. OT SLP Cohort 2022 Adding the missing voice: How self-report of autistic youth self-report on an executive functioning rating scale compares to parent report and that of youth with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or neurotypical development. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic youth self-report executive function problems that match their parents' overall pattern but are consistently less severe. Their own reports identify flexibility as a primary struggle, validating the use of self-report alongside parent forms to capture the patient's perspective. SLP Case Series 2022 Laryngeal Sarcoidosis and Swallowing: What Do We Know About Dysphagia Assessment and Management in this Population? Dysphagia Seven patients with laryngeal sarcoidosis showed silent aspiration on instrumental tests despite normal eating scores. Bedside checks missed these safety risks. Specialists recommend instrumental assessment for this group to catch airway threats that patients cannot feel. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Seven Domains of Persisting Problems after Hospital-treated Covid-19 Indicate a Need For a Multiprofessional Rehabilitation Approach. Journal of rehabilitation medicine After hospital-treated COVID-19, many survivors reported lasting problems in seven areas: vision, physical function, cognition, mood, swallowing, voice, and mental fatigue. In the subgroup with rehabilitation needs, 66% had problems in at least three areas. SLP Other Weighting of Prosodic and Lexical-Semantic Cues for Emotion Identification in Spectrally Degraded Speech and With Cochlear Implants. Ear and hearing Normal-hearing listeners rely on tone of voice, but cochlear implant users and those hearing simulated implant speech rely more on the words themselves. When tone and words conflict, implant users are better at catching the literal meaning but miss the sarcasm or true emotion conveyed by the voice. SLP Other 2022 The Effect of Clear Speech on Cantonese Alaryngeal Speakers' Intelligibility. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Male Cantonese laryngectomees told to overarticulate and slow down had better sentence intelligibility than in habitual speech: scores rose by 9.1% with electrolarynx, 8.9% with esophageal speech, and 1.4% with tracheoesophageal speech. SLP Qualitative 2022 Development of a Remote Examination of Deglutition Based on Consensus Surveys of Clinicians (Part I): Selection of Examination Items. Dysphagia Experts reached consensus on 13 swallowing assessment items feasible for remote video exams, grouping them into oral observation, overall evaluation, and voice judgment. The exam relies on a trained assistant to handle equipment and monitoring, as clinicians cannot palpate laryngeal movement remotely. SLP Other 2022 Age-Related Changes in Voice Emotion Recognition by Postlingually Deafened Listeners With Cochlear Implants. Ear and hearing Older adults with cochlear implants and older normally hearing listeners were less accurate at recognizing spoken emotions. Cochlear implant users also responded more slowly overall, and their response time did not lengthen with age as normally hearing listeners' did. SLP Cohort 2022 Vocal Turn-Taking in Families With Children With and Without Hearing Loss. Ear and hearing Children with cochlear implants in this sample had fewer conversational turns with adult female and adult male caregivers than children with hearing aids or normal hearing. Turns with other children increased with age and were higher in families with siblings. SLP Other 2021 The effects of a simulated fMRI environment on voice intensity in individuals with Parkinson's disease hypophonia and older healthy adults. Journal of communication disorders Simulated fMRI noise increased voice loudness in both Parkinson's patients and healthy adults. Patients started quieter but responded more strongly to the noise, narrowing the gap. Medication status did not change these effects. Clinicians should expect louder voices in scanner environments. SLP Cohort 2022 Home Auditory Environments of Children With Cochlear Implants and Children With Normal Hearing. Ear and hearing Children with cochlear implants did not show the typical age-related increase in conversational turns and vocalizations seen in peers with normal hearing. However, they experienced significantly less background noise. Earlier implant activation and higher maternal education were associated with more interaction. SLP RCT 2021 Toward Preventing Speech and Language Disorders of Known Genetic Origin: First Post-Intervention Results of Babble Boot Camp in Children With Classic Galactosemia. American journal of speech-language pathology Infants with classic galactosemia receiving early parent-coached speech intervention showed faster growth in babble complexity and larger expressive vocabularies than untreated peers. At follow-up, most treated children had typical articulation and language scores, unlike untreated controls. SLP Other 2021 The sensitivity and specificity of wideband absorbance measure in identifying pathologic middle ears in adults living with HIV. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Wideband absorbance detected more middle ear problems than standard tympanometry in adults with HIV, especially at low frequencies. However, its overall accuracy was modest. It should not replace clinical judgment but may help screen when specialist access is limited. SLP Survey 2021 Analysis of the singing voice handicap index for elderly choristers. CoDAS Elderly choristers had a median singing voice difficulty score of 25 on a 144-point scale. Scores were higher in singers aged 76 or older, female contraltos, and those who drank little water. SLP Case-Control 2021 Relationships Among Personality, Daily Speaking Voice Use, and Phonotrauma in Adult Female Singers. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Singers with vocal fold nodules scored higher on social dominance and lower on self-control than healthy singers. These personality traits helped distinguish the groups. However, the study design cannot prove these traits caused the voice problems. SLP RCT 2021 Impairment of speech auditory feedback error detection and motor correction in post-stroke aphasia. Journal of communication disorders People with left-hemisphere stroke were less accurate at hearing pitch changes in their own speech or in recordings, and their early speech corrections were smaller. These deficits correlated with poor repetition scores, suggesting auditory feedback problems contribute to speech errors in aphasia. SLP Other 2021 Pitch Accuracy of Vocal Singing in Deaf Children With Bimodal Hearing and Bilateral Cochlear Implants. Ear and hearing Children with cochlear implants or hearing aids sing with less pitch accuracy than peers with normal hearing. No implant configuration was superior to another. Standard predictors like age at implantation did not predict singing ability, suggesting vocal pitch control relies on different factors than speech perception. SLP Case Report 2021 Dysphagia due to anterior cervical osteophytosis: case report. CoDAS A 66-year-old man with dysphagia caused by large cervical bone spurs responded to conservative management. Speech therapy using chin tuck maneuvers and diet texture modification resolved his swallowing issues, allowing him to avoid surgery and maintain safe eating for two years. SLP Cohort 2022 Determining the Relationship Between Hyoid Bone Kinematics and Airway Protection in Swallowing. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Hyoid bone movement alone does not predict aspiration risk once laryngeal closure is accounted for. Clinicians should prioritize whether the larynx closes completely and how quickly it does so, rather than relying on hyoid excursion measures to judge swallowing safety. PT OT SLP Other 2022 The use of Multi-Sensory Environments with autistic children: Exploring the effect of having control of sensory changes. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Autistic children showed fewer repetitive movements and better attention when they controlled sensory equipment versus when it changed automatically. However, anxiety, social interaction, positive affect and arousal did not differ between the two conditions. ← Previous PAGE 6 OF 17 Next →
