SLP Other 2019 Building a Successful Voice Telepractice Program. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups This is a practice guide for setting up voice teleprograms, covering licensure, privacy, and treatment tips. It reports no patient outcomes, so there is no evidence here to support or refute any specific clinical approach. SLP Other 2019 Mechanisms of voice control related to prosody in autism spectrum disorder and first-degree relatives. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research People with autism made larger voice corrections when their feedback pitch was shifted down or up. Parents, especially those with autism-like social traits, showed similar patterns. Their voice feedback responses were atypical and related to prosody differences. SLP Other 2019 Discrimination of Gain Increments in Speech. Trends in hearing Small overall gain changes to speech can be noticed, but frequency-specific changes are much harder to hear. Patients may not notice small hearing-aid fine-tuning changes, especially at high frequencies. This is not evidence that changes improve outcomes. SLP Cohort 2019 Acoustic properties of early vocalizations in infants with fragile X syndrome. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research In infancy, vocalizations from infants with fragile X syndrome did not show group differences in the measured features. In fragile X only, pitch, duration, complexity, and volubility related to later language and ASD severity. SLP Qualitative 2019 Dysphonia, Perceived Control, and Psychosocial Distress: A Qualitative Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Patients with muscle tension dysphonia described voice problems causing distress that worsened symptoms. Those who felt they had some control over their reactions used adaptive coping and saw improvement. Those feeling helpless used maladaptive strategies and symptoms persisted. Speech therapy helped most, but carryover was difficult. SLP Other 2020 Validity of Vocal Communication and Vocal Complexity in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Vocal communication and vocal complexity measures from play-based communication samples in young children with autism predicted later expressive language, not nonverbal cognition, and changed over the study period. They help track development, not prove treatment effects. SLP Narrative Review 2020 Development of Excised Larynx. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This review summarizes how excised larynx models clarify voice mechanics. It reports that freezing causes 5% geometric distortion. It notes that vocal fold disorders raise the minimum power needed for phonation. These findings explain laboratory mechanisms but do not prove clinical treatment effects. SLP Pilot 2020 Web-Based Perceived Present Control Intervention for Voice Disorders: A Pilot Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Self-reported voice handicap scores went down after twenty adults used a three-week web program about what they could control now. The study had no control group, so the program cannot be credited alone. SLP Other 2019 Cigarette Smoke Exposure to Pig Larynx in an Inhalation Chamber. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Awake pigs breathing smoke from 15 cigarettes a day for 20 days coughed more and had mild vocal fold swelling. Inflammation markers did not show a clear difference. This is an animal model, so it does not show what happens in people. SLP Cohort 2019 Comparison of Pitch Strength With Perceptual and Other Acoustic Metric Outcome Measures Following Medialization Laryngoplasty. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Pitch strength did not outperform CPPS-based measures, but after medialization laryngoplasty plus six weeks of voice therapy, patients' voices improved on pitch strength and other acoustic measures. SLP Case Series 2019 Work-related communicative profile of radio broadcasters: a case study. Logopedics, phoniatrics, vocology Two radio broadcasters showed no hearing loss over one week, but voice patterns shifted. The male broadcaster had high vocal load and signs of fatigue, while the female had moderate load. Results are preliminary and cannot confirm if broadcasting causes voice disorders. SLP Pilot 2019 Perceptual Clinical Features in Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO): Toward Improved Diagnostic Approaches. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In adolescents with exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction, dyspnea ratings during exercise were significantly higher than in healthy athletes, but stridor and throat tightness were not. All athletes get breathless with exertion, so breathlessness alone is not diagnostic. SLP Other 2019 The Effects of Stress Type, Vowel Identity, Baseline f0, and Loudness on the Relative Fundamental Frequency of Individuals With Healthy Voices. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation For healthy voices, how syllables are stressed changes the voice measure thought to reflect laryngeal tension. Equal stress was the steadiest. Baseline pitch changed values; loudness did not. SLP Cohort 2020 Biobehavioral Measures of Presbylaryngeus. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Older adults with age-related vocal fold changes had worse voice ratings, reflux symptoms, and lower physical activity than peers, but many differences were not significant and the study was small. SLP Other 2020 Reproducibility of Voice Parameters: The Effect of Room Acoustics and Microphones. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Room acoustics changed voice scores more than microphones did. Jitter and CPPS were least affected. A quiet, low-reverberation room matters most when comparing voice scores over time. SLP Pilot 2019 Laryngeal Vibration Increases Spontaneous Swallowing Rates in Chronic Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: A Proof-of-Principle Pilot Study. Dysphagia Neck vibration at 70 Hz and 110 Hz raised spontaneous swallowing rates versus sham in 13 participants with chronic dysphagia. It did not speed voluntary swallow initiation, and the increase did not persist when vibration stopped. SLP Cohort 2019 Effects of Age and Hearing Loss on the Recognition of Emotions in Speech. Ear and hearing Older adults and those with hearing loss struggle to identify emotions in speech, with hearing loss worsening the deficit independent of age. Older listeners were particularly poor at recognizing emotions from male talkers. Sex of the listener did not affect performance once hearing thresholds were accounted for. SLP Other 2020 Application of a Landmark-Based Method for Acoustic Analysis of Dysphonic Speech. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Landmark-based acoustic analysis distinguished dysphonic from normal speech, with a 7.24% misclassification rate. Fewer landmarks in voiced segments and more in unvoiced segments characterized dysphonia. This method shows promise for objectively assessing speech intelligibility deficits in voice disorders. SLP Other 2020 The Effect of Pulmonary Function on the Incidence of Vocal Fatigue Among Teachers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Female teachers who reported more voice discomfort had lower unadjusted lung capacity, peak flow and first-second volume; this link disappeared after adjusting for body size and age. Male teachers showed no such link. SLP Other 2019 Simultaneous Radiological and Fiberendoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing ("SIRFES") in Patients After Surgery of Oropharyngeal/Laryngeal Cancer and Postoperative Dysphagia. Dysphagia After head and neck cancer surgery and radiotherapy, FEES and VFSS done together gave different swallowing scores. VFSS detected aspiration missed by FEES in 16 of 202 swallows; FEES scored more residue. SLP Cohort 2019 Vocal Fold Paralysis/Paresis as a Marker for Poor Swallowing Outcomes After Thoracic Surgery Procedures. Dysphagia Vocal fold paresis or paralysis was coded in 0.55% of thoracic surgery discharges. Those discharges had more swallowing complications, feeding tubes, tracheostomy, longer stays, and higher costs, but only 18.1% had ENT/SLP services. SLP Cohort 2020 Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Deep Brain Stimulation on Voice and Speech in Patients With Dystonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation After bilateral deep brain stimulation for dystonia, voice and speech ratings did not show improvement at 6 months, but blinded ratings showed better voice grade, roughness, strain and less severe speech at 12 months. SLP Other 2020 The Prediction of Risk of Penetration-Aspiration Via Hyoid Bone Displacement Features. Dysphagia A measure of how far the hyoid bone moves forward during swallowing was associated with disordered penetration-aspiration scores. Older age and thin liquids also raised risk. This was a preliminary risk calculation, not yet a clinical tool. SLP Other 2019 Factors Affecting Bimodal Benefit in Pediatric Mandarin-Speaking Chinese Cochlear Implant Users. Ear and hearing Adding a hearing aid did not improve Mandarin CI children's speech recognition in steady noise or competing talkers in the main test. It worsened male-to-male competition, and helped only in a harder task. SLP Other 2020 Reduced Coordination of Hyolaryngeal Elevation and Bolus Movement in a Pig Model of Preterm Infant Swallowing. Dysphagia External neck video reliably identifies swallows in term piglets but fails in preterm piglets, missing up to 10% of swallows and falsely identifying up to 27%. Preterm hyoid movement is smaller and poorly coordinated with bolus flow, so term-validated external metrics do not transfer. SLP Other 2020 Respiratory-Swallow Pattern Following Total Laryngectomy. Dysphagia Among 12 adults after total laryngectomy, the main swallow-breathing pattern did not differ by TEP status or bolus type. The most common pattern was inspiration-swallow-inspiration (50%), not the typical expiration-swallow-expiration. SLP Other 2020 A Surgical Mouse Model for Advancing Laryngeal Nerve Regeneration Strategies. Dysphagia In mice, cutting the recurrent laryngeal nerve caused lasting vocal fold immobility and brief swallowing changes. Vagus nerve stimulation after nerve crush showed preliminary signs of faster vocal fold recovery. SLP Cohort 2020 Vocal Turn-Taking Between Mothers and Their Children With Cochlear Implants. Ear and hearing Mothers and children with cochlear implants took turns less often and spoke over each other more at 3 months after implant activation than hearing peers. By 12 months, child turn-taking and overlap caught up, but mothers still followed their child less often. SLP Other 2020 Word Identification With Temporally Interleaved Competing Sounds by Younger and Older Adult Listeners. Ear and hearing Older adults missed more target words when other words were inserted between them. Their trouble was linked to mental flexibility, not high-frequency hearing loss or unrelated sounds. SLP Qualitative 2020 Women's perspective on life after total laryngectomy: a qualitative study. International journal of language & communication disorders Eight women described how total laryngectomy disrupted their roles as caregivers and partners, leading to persistent vulnerability. They disliked their new voices and faced stigma. Preoperative peer support was vital, but often painted an overly optimistic picture of daily life. SLP Cohort 2020 Dysphagia in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Dysphagia In PSP, swallowing problems are mostly oral: tongue control and bolus transport are impaired, and pharyngeal swallow starts late. Airway protection and pharyngeal clearance were often spared, and few reported changing food textures. Higher PSP severity tracked worse oral and pharyngeal scores. SLP Other 2020 Effects of Cognitive Load on Pure-Tone Audiometry Thresholds in Younger and Older Adults. Ear and hearing Cognitive load raised pure-tone hearing thresholds in the lab, more in older adults (2.5 dB) than younger adults (1.0 dB). But the threshold change under load did not predict speech-in-noise scores. SLP RCT 2020 Effects of pivotal response treatment on reciprocal vocal contingency in a randomized controlled trial of children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Children receiving Pivotal Response Treatment plus parent training showed higher vocal reciprocity with adults after 24 weeks compared to controls. No significant difference was found at baseline or after 12 weeks. This suggests the treatment effect on spontaneous speech interaction emerges with sustained intervention. SLP Case-Control 2020 A Six-Minute Measure of Vocalizations in Toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Toddlers with autism produced more nonsyllabic vocalizations and fewer syllabic ones during a six-minute tablet task than typically developing children. However, these vocal patterns did not reliably distinguish autism from other developmental language delays in this small sample. SLP Other 2020 Masking Effects in the Perception of Multiple Simultaneous Talkers in Normal-Hearing and Cochlear Implant Listeners. Trends in hearing Normal-hearing listeners did worse as more competing talkers spoke. Mandarin-speaking cochlear implant users did slightly better with 4 competing talkers than with 1, but they still performed worse than normal-hearing listeners. SLP Cohort 2020 A Cross-Sectional, Quantitative Videofluoroscopic Analysis of Swallowing Physiology and Function in Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Thickened liquids reduced unsafe swallows compared to thin liquids without increasing residue. ALS patients showed delayed airway closure and reduced pharyngeal constriction, even when they reported no swallowing symptoms. This supports instrumental assessment over symptom reporting for early detection. SLP Other 2020 Approximations to the Voice of a Cochlear Implant: Explorations With Single-Sided Deaf Listeners. Trends in hearing Fourteen people with one normal ear and one cochlear implant matched the implant's sound to modified speech using filters and pitch changes. They described the implant as muffled, robotic or harsh. The simulations varied widely, showing no single sound quality exists for all implant users. SLP Other 2020 Contributions of Voice Expectations to Talker Selection in Younger and Older Adults With Normal Hearing. Trends in hearing When a talker's voice cue shifted toward the competing talker, listeners recognized fewer target keywords and more words from the wrong voice. Older adults recognized fewer keywords overall, but the misleading cue hurt both age groups similarly. PT OT SLP Survey 2020 Post-stroke dysphagia: An exploration of initial identification and management performed by nurses and doctors. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Nurses and doctors mostly used informal observation to spot swallowing problems, often missing key signs like voice changes or voluntary cough. They also reported using unsafe practices like syringe feeding and prescribing exercises outside their scope. This highlights a need for better training and formal screening tools. SLP Other 2020 Cepstral Peak Prominence Values for Clinical Voice Evaluation. American journal of speech-language pathology Cepstral peak prominence values below 11.46 dB for sustained /a/ vowels and 6.11 dB for the Rainbow Passage indicate a voice disorder in ADSV. Praat thresholds are 14.45 dB and 9.33 dB. These cutoffs help screen for dysphonia in English speakers using these common software tools. SLP Cohort 2020 Perception of One's Own Voice After Hearing-Aid Fitting for Naive Hearing-Aid Users and Hearing-Aid Refitting for Experienced Hearing-Aid Users. Trends in hearing First-time hearing aid users reported significantly more problems with the sound of their own voice after fitting, with agreement rising from 7% to 45%. Experienced users reported fewer own-voice problems after refitting, though most still had some complaints. Voice control issues were linked more to hearing loss than to the aids. SLP Narrative Review 2019 Resonance Effects and the Vocalization of Speech. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups No new patient results or tested treatment outcomes are reported. The paper reviews resonance concepts in voice, nasalization, and performer projection. SLP Other 2020 Evaluation of an Adaptive Dynamic Compensation System in Cochlear Implant Listeners. Trends in hearing In cochlear implant listeners, the Voice Guard setting did not improve speech understanding in noise compared with a standard compression setting, but it did improve speech understanding in quiet. SLP Other 2021 Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System: Methodology to Identify and Describe Unique Targets and Ingredients. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation A Delphi consensus process among 10 voice specialists produced standardized categories for voice therapy targets and ingredients. The resulting framework helps clinicians describe treatments precisely and replicate research protocols, though it currently excludes complex activity-based and cognitive interventions. OT SLP Other 2020 The Development and Feasibility Study of a Multimodal 'Talking Wall' to Facilitate the Voice of Young People with Autism and Complex Needs: A Case Study in a Specialist Residential School. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Ten minimally verbal or complex-needs students used a multimodal 'Talking Wall' to express preferences. While staff found it promising for capturing immediate likes, spontaneous use was absent, and students often matched images rather than expressing true feelings, especially regarding negative emotions. SLP Narrative Review 2020 Creating equitable healthcare quality and safety for children with intellectual disability in hospital. Child: care, health and development Children coded with intellectual disability stayed a median of 87 hours, versus 64 hours for other children, but one third of their admissions lacked the code. Do not rely on hospital diagnosis codes alone. SLP Cohort 2021 Swallowing and Voice Outcomes in Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19: An Observational Cohort Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Most patients referred to speech therapy for COVID-19 swallowing or voice problems improved significantly. Nearly all resumed oral intake within days and were decannulated, but more than half still had voice issues on discharge, requiring specific outpatient follow-up pathways. PT OT SLP Cohort 2020 Evaluation of an Interdisciplinary Screening Program for People With Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders. Archives of rehabilitation research and clinical translation An interdisciplinary screening program for Parkinson’s disease was feasible and sustainable. It identified high fall risk and soft speech, leading to 98% of participants being referred to rehabilitation services, though only half started care within the system. SLP Other 2021 Dehydration and Estrous Staging in the Rat Larynx: an in vivo Prospective Investigation. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Severe dehydration reduced vocal fold hyaluronan in rats, but estrous cycle stage had no effect. This animal model does not prove that hydration or menstrual cycle changes affect human voice quality or tissue structure. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2020 Factors Associated with Risk of Stroke-Associated Pneumonia in Patients with Dysphagia: A Systematic Review. Dysphagia Prophylactic antibiotics did not reduce pneumonia risk. Metoclopramide and multidisciplinary swallowing care appeared protective, but data were limited. PPI use was linked to higher risk. Nasogastric tube evidence was inconsistent. Mobility and dysphagia severity were strong risk markers. ← Previous PAGE 4 OF 17 Next →
