SLP Cohort 2018 Time of Day and Hearing Aid Adoption. Trends in hearing Patients with audiology appointments at noon or 4 p.m. were less likely to adopt hearing aids. Those who did adopt were less likely to return them. This is an observational link, not proof that changing appointment time changes behavior. SLP RCT 2018 A software program to assist coding of prelinguistic vocalizations in real time. Clinical linguistics & phonetics TimeStamper lets a coder mark canonical and non-canonical syllables while listening in real time, stamps each keypress, calculates the canonical babbling ratio, and shows only the last annotation. It is described for assessing infant prelinguistic vocalizations. SLP Other 2018 A new measure of child vocal reciprocity in children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Daylong recordings of young children with autism produced a new vocal back-and-forth score that rose with their consonant variety. It is a research measure, not a treatment result, and was tested in 21 children. SLP Other 2018 Hearing Aids Benefit Recognition of Words in Emotional Speech but Not Emotion Identification. Trends in hearing Hearing aids did not improve older users' identification of emotions in speech. They did improve recognition of words spoken with emotion. SLP Other 2018 Vowel Formant Dispersion Reflects Severity of Apraxia of Speech. Aphasiology After stroke, greater variability in vowel sounds and voiced stop timing during picture description went with more severe apraxia of speech, but acoustic measures alone were not accurate enough for diagnosis. SLP Other 2018 The Noise Exposure Structured Interview (NESI): An Instrument for the Comprehensive Estimation of Lifetime Noise Exposure. Trends in hearing The NESI is a structured interview for estimating lifetime noise exposure. It asks about noisy activities, life periods, duration, level, hearing protection, and firearm noise. It is mainly for research, not a validated clinical test. SLP Other 2018 Multimodal and Spectral Degradation Effects on Speech and Emotion Recognition in Adult Listeners. Trends in hearing Seeing the talker's face helped normal-hearing adults repeat degraded speech and identify emotions, especially when the audio was very distorted. Emotion recognition stayed near perfect with visual cues. OT SLP Qualitative 2018 The importance of context in early autism intervention: A qualitative South African study. Autism : the international journal of research and practice South African caregivers of young children said early autism intervention should consider family language, culture, home setting, cost, and stigma. They preferred in-home therapy, language-matched providers, and speech or occupational therapists over local community workers. SLP Other 2018 Typical vs. atypical: Combining auditory Gestalt perception and acoustic analysis of early vocalisations in Rett syndrome. Research in developmental disabilities Experts inconsistently rated early vocalisations from one infant with Rett syndrome. Only 9 were unanimously atypical, but over half had at least one listener flagging them. Timbre was the most common perceived deviation, matching acoustic spectral analysis. SLP Pilot 2019 Detection of Swallow Kinematic Events From Acoustic High-Resolution Cervical Auscultation Signals in Patients With Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In 35 stroke patients, several neck microphone features peaked within 0.1 seconds of key swallow X-ray events in at least 60% of swallows. The study found timing links, not proof that the device diagnoses aspiration. SLP Cohort 2019 Mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders: Play behaviors with infant siblings and social responsiveness. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Mothers raising infants at risk for autism showed no clear difference in play behaviors or questionnaire scores from other mothers. Their positive affect and combined looks, sounds, and smiles were linked to infants' social behaviors. SLP Other 2019 The Relation Between Vocal Pitch and Vocal Emotion Recognition Abilities in People with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Typical Development. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Better vocal pitch discrimination was linked to better vocal emotion recognition in typical adults, but not in adults with autism, and the link did not differ significantly between groups. Adults with autism recognized emotions and discriminated vocal pitch worse. SLP Other 2018 Effects of Aging on Vocal Fundamental Frequency and Vowel Formants in Men and Women. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Healthy women’s pitch and some vowel formants differed between young and middle-aged or older groups. Men showed few differences, and higher formants were stable. Aging alone did not produce a consistent acoustic pattern. SLP RCT 2019 Vocal function exercises for normal voice: The effects of varying dosage. International journal of speech-language pathology High-dose vocal exercises improved voice stamina more than traditional or low doses, but half the participants quit. Low doses failed to produce significant change. Traditional dosing offered the best balance of improvement and adherence. SLP Other 2018 Perceptual Differences between Novice and Professional Music Theater Singers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Professional music theater singers produced belt, mix, and legit sounds that casting directors identified more accurately than those from novice singers. Raters relied on brassy or fluty tone quality rather than brightness or darkness to distinguish the styles. SLP Systematic Review 2018 Parameters and Scales Used to Assess and Report Findings From Stroboscopy: A Systematic Review. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Voice research rarely uses stroboscopy as a treatment outcome measure. When it does, 62 studies used 141 different terms and up to 24 different scales for the same features. This lack of standardization makes results impossible to compare across studies. SLP Other 2019 Estimation of Source-Filter Interaction Regions Based on Electroglottography. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Electroglottography reliably detects vocal fold vibration changes caused by source-filter interaction, identifying 89% of regions in ascending glides for men and 84.8% for women. This matches the accuracy of fundamental frequency tracking, offering an alternative method to pinpoint these acoustic interactions. SLP Other 2019 Compensation Strategies in Voice Production With Glottal Insufficiency. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation A computer model shows that glottal insufficiency restricts pitch and intensity ranges because sustaining a normal breath group requires excessive respiratory effort. Compensation strategies like deeper inspiration or muscle tension reduce noise but increase the risk of vocal fatigue. SLP Narrative Review 2018 Applying U.S. national guidelines for ototoxicity monitoring in adult patients: perspectives on patient populations, service gaps, barriers and solutions. International journal of audiology Adult patients at risk of drug-induced hearing loss often miss monitoring because referrals, scheduling, and staffing are inconsistent. In a small trial, chair-side self-screening completed baseline and pre-dose monitoring for all patients randomized to that arm; the reported trial data are about test completion. SLP Other 2019 The Perception of Breathiness in the Voices of Pediatric Speakers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Six listeners matched breathiness consistently in synthesized child vowels, and their judgments tracked the breathiness changes made to the voices. For these child samples, breathiness perception did not depend strongly on pitch height, unlike adult voices. SLP Pilot 2018 Double Blind Study Investigating the Effect of Different Voice Prostheses on Ease of Swallowing and Residue Post Laryngectomy. Dysphagia Neither patients nor experts consistently identified one best voice prosthesis for swallowing. Experts did find less residue with the Blom Singer Classic Indwelling on thin liquids and the Provox Vega on soft foods, but patient ratings showed no difference between devices. SLP Other 2018 Oropharyngeal swallowing function in patients with presbyphagia. Journal of physical therapy science Older adults with age-related swallowing difficulty had swallowing study score values of pharyngeal wall coating 5.2 ± 3.44 and aspiration 3.60 ± 3.04. The study only described scores, not treatment effects. SLP Other 2018 Developmental Effects in Masking Release for Speech-in-Speech Perception Due to a Target/Masker Sex Mismatch. Ear and hearing Infants did not detect speech more easily when target and background talkers differed in sex. School-age children and adults did gain a benefit, but children still needed more favorable listening conditions than adults. SLP Other 2018 Children's Recognition of Emotional Prosody in Spectrally Degraded Speech Is Predicted by Their Age and Cognitive Status. Ear and hearing Increasing simulated cochlear implant speech channels from 8 to 16 did not show a stable benefit in normal-hearing children. Age and nonverbal intelligence predicted emotion recognition more than vocabulary or parent-rated executive function. SLP Other 2018 Maturation of the Coordination Between Respiration and Deglutition with and Without Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Lesion in an Animal Model. Dysphagia In infant pigs, the delay between a swallow and the next breath grew from day 7 to day 17. Pigs with a recurrent laryngeal nerve lesion showed a larger age-related change, but the lesion alone did not shift timing. SLP Other 2018 A Retrospective Estimate of Ear Disease Detection Using the "Red Flags" in a Clinical Sample. Ear and hearing FDA red flags caught 91% of cases of ear disease and screened clear 72% of people without disease. AAO-HNS caught 98% but screened clear only 20% of people without disease. SLP Case-Control 2018 Links between looking and speaking in autism and first-degree relatives: insights into the expression of genetic liability to autism. Molecular autism People with autism and their parents show slower naming and different eye movement patterns during a rapid naming task. These basic language processing differences link to repetitive behaviors and narrative ability, suggesting they may reflect underlying genetic risk for autism. SLP Other 2019 Registers in Infant Phonation. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Three typical infants spontaneously shifted within one vocalization from modal voice to loft-like high-pitched or pulse-like rasping voice. For SLPs, pitch alone may not identify these qualities. SLP RCT 2019 Vocal function exercises for normal voice: With and without semi-occlusion. International journal of speech-language pathology In women with normal voice, only the traditional semi-occluded exercise posture produced a clear increase in how long they could sustain a sound after six weeks. The reduced occlusion posture did not improve clearly, and the open vowel posture did not improve clearly. SLP Cohort 2018 Coordination of Pharyngeal and Laryngeal Swallowing Events During Single Liquid Swallows After Oral Endotracheal Intubation for Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Dysphagia In 11 ARDS patients after intubation, the time the larynx stayed closed was unchanged compared with healthy volunteers, but time to close the larynx was longer and the whole swallow took longer; only one aspirated. SLP Other 2019 The Emotional Communication in Hearing Questionnaire (EMO-CHeQ): Development and Evaluation. Ear and hearing People with hearing loss reported more trouble understanding emotion in voices than people with normal hearing, and hearing aid users reported similar trouble to those not using aids. The EMO-CHeQ captures this voice-emotion handicap. SLP Other 2019 Recommendations on Collecting and Storing Samples for Genetic Studies in Hearing and Tinnitus Research. Ear and hearing No patient outcomes are reported. This is a recommendations paper on collecting and storing samples for genetic studies in tinnitus and hearing loss, not a study of treatment. SLP Other 2019 Assessing Hyolaryngeal Excursion: Comparing Quantitative Methods to Palpation at the Bedside and Visualization During Videofluoroscopy. Dysphagia Bedside palpation judgments of reduced versus normal hyoid movement differed by measured forward position only, and videofluoroscopy judgments did not differ by any measured position. SLP Systematic Review 2018 Relationship between perceived social support and patient-reported communication outcomes across communication disorders: a systematic review. International journal of language & communication disorders Across adult communication disorders, links between perceived social support and self-reported communication were mostly weak. Qualitative accounts described supportive relationships that helped communication, and absent or misguided support that hindered it. SLP Narrative Review 2019 "Hidden in Plain Sight": A Descriptive Review of Laryngeal Vestibule Closure. Dysphagia This paper reviews the physiology of laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) and how it is measured. It does not present new patient data or test interventions, so there are no findings to change practice. SLP Other 2019 Voice Emotion Recognition by Children With Mild-to-Moderate Hearing Loss. Ear and hearing Children with mild-to-moderate hearing loss recognized emotions from recorded speech as accurately as normal-hearing children and took similar time. They were still less accurate than adults, and vocabulary mattered for their performance. SLP Cohort 2018 Coordination is key: Joint attention and vocalisation in infant siblings of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. International journal of language & communication disorders High-risk infants later diagnosed with ASD showed less advanced joint attention, such as showing and pointing, no age-related change in vocal development, and rarely paired sounds with these behaviours. Low-level request behaviours did not differ. SLP Cohort 2019 Swallow Screen Associated With Airway Protection and Dysphagia After Acute Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation A nurse-administered 3-oz water screen missed many swallowing problems in 48 acute stroke patients: 15 of 35 who passed still had dysphagia on fluoroscopy. Failed screens were associated with airway protection impairment, but passing did not rule out dysphagia. SLP Other 2019 Estimates of the Prevalence of Speech and Motor Speech Disorders in Youth With 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. American journal of speech-language pathology Most children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome were classified with a motor speech disorder: 82.4% of 17. Dysarthria was most common. Motor speech disorder rates were similar in comparison groups. SLP Cohort 2019 Dyadic interactions in children exhibiting the broader autism phenotype: Is the broader autism phenotype distinguishable from typical development? Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with the broader autism phenotype showed lower scores on language and social measures by 24 months. Global play ratings detected these differences earlier than detailed second-by-second coding. These social markers emerged by 15 months, offering potential targets for early intervention. SLP Other 2019 How effective is LENA in detecting speech vocalizations and language produced by children and adolescents with ASD in different contexts? Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research LENA did not reliably detect speech from children and adolescents with autism aged 5 to 18. It missed many child utterances and often labelled them as adult speech, especially in older participants and when the recorder was not worn. SLP Cohort 2019 Relationship Between Laryngeal Sensation, Length of Intubation, and Aspiration in Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure. Dysphagia Absent laryngeal reflex after extubation was associated with aspiration, especially in patients with shorter ventilation. It was not associated with pneumonia. The study reports association, not cause. SLP Cohort 2019 A frequent acoustic sign of speech motor delay (SMD). Clinical linguistics & phonetics Children and adults with speech motor delay had longer mid-vowel and diphthong durations in continuous speech than speech-delayed controls without motor speech disorder. This sign was frequent in USA and complex neurodevelopmental disorder groups. SLP Other 2019 Reference Values for Healthy Swallowing Across the Range From Thin to Extremely Thick Liquids. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Healthy adults under 60 usually swallowed each bolus once, with little residue. Thin liquids had the most penetration, and thicker liquids changed sip size and timing. These values are for comparison, not treatment evidence. SLP Cohort 2019 An Investigation of Factors Related to Food Intake Ability and Swallowing Difficulty After Surgery for Thoracic Esophageal Cancer. Dysphagia In 32 patients, vocal cord paralysis after thoracic esophageal cancer surgery did not show a relation to inability to ingest food. Cervical lymph node dissection was associated with inability to ingest food on postoperative day 7. SLP Qualitative 2019 The cat on a hot tin roof? Critical considerations in multilingual language assessments. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings IsiZulu-speaking children read language screening pictures through their own culture. A black cat on a roof was seen as danger, not rescue, and slow answers to English questions could look like word-finding problems. SLP Other 2019 Speech and motor speech disorders and intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Reduced intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome was not associated with age, intelligence, language, or speech motor delay. It was associated with dysarthria or apraxia, especially both together. SLP Other 2019 Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Clinical linguistics & phonetics Among 346 speakers with eight complex neurodevelopmental disorders, 62.7% had a speech and/or motor speech disorder. Motor speech problems, including speech motor delay, dysarthria and apraxia, were common in some groups, but groups varied widely. SLP Other 2019 Initial studies of the phenotype and persistence of speech motor delay (SMD). Clinical linguistics & phonetics Among children with idiopathic speech delay, speech motor delay was associated with lower speech and language scores. In 14 treated children, 3 still met criteria after 9 years; 11 did not before 9. No early speech or demographic variable was associated with persistence. SLP Meta-Analysis 2019 The relation between parent verbal responsiveness and child communication in young children with or at risk for autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Parents who talk about what their toddler is already looking at are linked to better communication skills. However, teaching parents to do this did not improve the children's language in trials. Direct speech therapy is still needed to help the child. ← Previous PAGE 3 OF 17 Next →
