SLP Other 2017 The Acoustics of Word-Initial Fricatives and Their Effect on Word-Level Intelligibility in Children With Bilateral Cochlear Implants. Ear and hearing Children with cochlear implants produced /s/ and /ʃ/ with less acoustic contrast than hearing peers. In noise, their /s/ words were harder to understand than their /ʃ/ words, but there was no significant difference between the two groups for either sound alone. SLP Other 2017 An Excised Canine Model of Anterior Glottic Web and Its Acoustic, Aerodynamic, and High-speed Measurements. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In an excised dog larynx model, adding a suture bridge to mimic a glottic web raised the pressure needed for phonation and increased pitch and signal chaos as the web covered more of the airway. The web itself vibrated, creating a complex movement system unlike normal voice production. SLP RCT 2017 Kinematic Visual Biofeedback Improves Accuracy of Learning a Swallowing Maneuver and Accuracy of Clinician Cues During Training. Dysphagia Healthy adults learning a swallowing hold were more accurate with x-ray video feedback and x-ray-based cues than with muscle-signal feedback and cues based on it. X-ray first then muscle-signal training did not maintain accuracy. SLP Case-Control 2016 Basic and complex emotion recognition in children with autism: cross-cultural findings. Molecular autism Across Israel, Britain and Sweden, children aged 5 to 9 with autism scored lower than same-age controls in recognising emotions from faces, voices, bodies and whole scenes without words. The gap appeared for basic and complex emotions. SLP Other 2017 Relationship Between Acoustic Voice Onset and Offset and Selected Instances of Oscillatory Onset and Offset in Young Healthy Men and Women. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In 56 adults with typical voice producing /hi/, vocal fold motion began before the acoustic signal, while steady vibration began after it. At offset, the acoustic signal stopped between loss of steady motion and full vocal fold stop. SLP Other 2016 Assessment of Spectral and Temporal Resolution in Cochlear Implant Users Using Psychoacoustic Discrimination and Speech Cue Categorization. Ear and hearing In cochlear implant users, better speech frequency-cue categorization went with a non-speech frequency ripple test and word recognition. Better speech timing-cue categorization also went with word recognition, but a non-speech timing test did not. SLP Other 2017 Pre-pharyngeal Swallow Effects of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Lesion on Bolus Shape and Airway Protection in an Infant Pig Model. Dysphagia In infant pigs whose recurrent laryngeal nerve was injured, swallows that protected the airway had smaller boluses before swallowing. Bolus shape differed by pig and injury. The authors suggest testing controlled milk volume in future human work. SLP Case-Control 2017 A Retrospective Video Analysis of Canonical Babbling and Volubility in Infants with Fragile X Syndrome at 9-12 Months of Age. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In home videos at 9 to 12 months, none of 10 infants later diagnosed with fragile X met the usual babbling stage, while 8 of 14 typical infants did. They also vocalized less. This may help flag early language risk, but it does not diagnose. SLP Other 2017 Using the Borg CR10 Physical Exertion Scale to Measure Patient-perceived Vocal Effort Pre and Post Treatment. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In 36 adults with phonotraumatic voice disorders, an anchored Borg CR10 captured lower perceived vocal effort after four resonant voice therapy sessions, and it matched VHI item 14 weakly before therapy and moderately after therapy. SLP Other 2017 Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) in Phelan-McDermid Syndrome: Validity and Suggestions for Use in Minimally Verbal Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In 18 minimally verbal children with Phelan-McDermid syndrome, LENA often missed child speech. Its speech/non-speech ratio matched human coding and related to a caregiver language score. Use LENA cautiously in older children or children with high repetitive speech. SLP Other 2017 Acoustic Measures of Voice and Physiologic Measures of Autonomic Arousal during Speech as a Function of Cognitive Load. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation When healthy speakers named colour words that conflicted with their font colour, sweat-gland activity increased and voice quality measures changed slightly. Pitch and sound level did not change, and the overall pattern was weak. SLP Other 2016 Acquisition, retention, and generalization of rhotics with and without ultrasound visual feedback. Journal of communication disorders No consistent advantage emerged for ultrasound visual feedback in children with rhotic distortions. Only one of four improved more within session with ultrasound, and ultrasound did not show better retention or generalization between sessions. SLP Other 2017 A Formant Range Profile for Singers. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Singers could map their own vowel space with vocal-fry recordings, but the method did not produce a maximum vowel-space chart; the measured space varied widely. SLP Other 2017 Speech Adjustments for Room Acoustics and Their Effects on Vocal Effort. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation People spoke longer in more reverberant rooms, but at a lower pitch. Loud speech raised pitch and voicing time, and both rose across tasks. Sound level change was the strongest predictor of reported vocal effort. SLP Other 2017 Validating the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) for use with people with aphasia: an analysis of Differential Item Function (DIF). Aphasiology The CPIB appears usable with people with aphasia without needing different scoring, but family proxy ratings do not match self-report. Clinicians may need to provide communication support. SLP Other 2017 Quantitative Evaluation of the In Vivo Vocal Fold Medial Surface Shape. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In one dog larynx, activating the thyroarytenoid muscle quickly bulged the vocal fold inward and downward, while the lateral cricoarytenoid adducted it from above and behind. Together they made a thicker, more rectangular glottis. SLP Survey 2017 Poor consistency in evaluating South African adults with neurogenic dysphagia. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings South African speech-language therapists often used history, oral motor, voice and swallow safety checks, but sensation, medication review and social background were often skipped, and many instruments were rarely available. This describes uneven practice, not patient outcomes. SLP Case Report 2016 Effect of voice therapy in sulcus vocalis: A single case study. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings A man with bilateral sulcus vocalis changed after voice therapy: average pitch fell, objective voice quality moved from negative to positive, and self-rated handicap fell. This is one case, so it cannot show the therapy works for sulcus vocalis. SLP Other 2017 Oscillatory Onset and Offset in Young Vocally Healthy Adults Across Various Measurement Methods. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Different ways of timing vocal fold vibration onset gave partly overlapping values in healthy young adults, and onset timing did not track offset timing. Choose the measurement based on whether the question is about onset or offset. SLP Cohort 2017 Acquisition of voice onset time in toddlers at high and low risk for autism spectrum disorder. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Toddlers at high risk for autism produced similar words, errors, and speech timing as controls. At 36 months, children with autism were less likely to make measurably separate /b/ and /p/ sounds. This was a small speech difference, not a tested treatment effect. SLP Narrative Review 2017 A Review of Hyaluronic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid-based Hydrogels for Vocal Fold Tissue Engineering. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation No clinical finding to act on. SLP Other 2017 Dysphonia in adults with developmental stuttering: A descriptive study. The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings Most adults with developmental stuttering in this study of 20 people showed voice problems. Their voices were often strained or weak, and measured voice scores were low. Stuttering severity tended to match poorer voice scores. No treatment was tested. SLP Pilot 2017 An Online Telepractice Model for the Prevention of Voice Disorders in Vocally Healthy Student Teachers Evaluated by a Smartphone Application. Perspectives of the ASHA special interest groups In 21 vocally healthy student teachers, preliminary app-recorded voice measures changed after a voice prevention model delivered in person or online. The main outcome, whether voice problems appeared during student teaching, is not reported yet. SLP Other 2017 Vocal Fry and Vowel Height in Simulated Room Acoustics. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Low-height vowels and pink background noise were associated with more automatically detected vocal fry in 40 healthy speakers. The effect was small and not tested in voice therapy. SLP Survey 2017 The Effect of Classroom Capacity on Vocal Fatigue as Quantified by the Vocal Fatigue Index. Folia phoniatrica et logopaedica : official organ of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Female teachers reported more tired voices and more voice pain in larger classrooms. The highest average scores came from very large rooms. Recovery with rest did not track classroom size clearly. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2017 Co-constructing engagement in stroke rehabilitation: a qualitative study exploring how practitioner engagement can influence patient engagement. Clinical rehabilitation Patients with communication disabilities perceived practitioner engagement through personalisation and persistence. Disengagement, often driven by practitioner powerlessness or stigma, led to reduced service access and patient isolation. Engagement was co-constructed, with practitioner attitudes directly influencing patient participation. PT OT SLP Cohort 2017 Behavioral Markers of Emergent Stranger Anxiety in Infants and Toddlers with Fragile X Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Infants with Fragile X showed less facial fear than controls. Within the group, stable distress vocalizations linked to later social withdrawal, while lower escape behaviors linked to higher autistic symptoms. These markers did not predict general anxiety. SLP Cohort 2017 Pitch Strength as an Outcome Measure for Treatment of Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Computer estimates of voice pitch clarity rose after treatment, and the number of steady, near-regular vowel segments increased in 30 patients. This may help track voice change, but the study did not compare pitch strength with clinician ratings or other measures. SLP Other 2017 Acute Nanoparticle Exposure to Vocal Folds: A Laboratory Study. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Acute exposure to carbon nanotubes did not damage vocal fold epithelial barriers in lab tissue. However, direct exposure caused fibroblasts to increase expression of fibrosis-related genes. This suggests potential long-term scarring risk despite immediate barrier preservation. SLP Narrative Review 2017 Insights Into the Role of Collagen in Vocal Fold Health and Disease. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation No patient outcomes or tested treatment effects are reported. This review explains collagen's role in vocal fold tissue, wound healing, and experimental biomaterial ideas. SLP Case-Control 2018 Acoustic Perturbation Measures Improve with Increasing Vocal Intensity in Individuals With and Without Voice Disorders. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In women with and without voice disorders, jitter, shimmer, and HNR changed with loudness. Louder voice lowered jitter and shimmer and raised HNR. Loudness affected these measures, and pathology did not consistently separate groups. SLP Other 2017 Dynamics of the Driving Force During the Normal Vocal Fold Vibration Cycle. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation In one trained vocalist, computed pressure inside the vocal folds was higher while the folds opened than while they closed. The pressure ratio between opening and closing rose with loudness up to about 76.5 dB, then fell. SLP Other 2018 Utility of Laryngeal High-speed Videoendoscopy in Clinical Voice Assessment. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Adding high-speed videoendoscopy changed vocal fold vibration ratings, most often mucosal wave (74%) and amplitude of vibration (53%), and changed the initial diagnosis in 11 patients (7%), mostly in moderate to severe dysphonia. SLP Case Report 2018 Pharyngeal Dystonia Mimicking Spasmodic Dysphonia. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation Voice breaks that looked like spasmodic dysphonia came from pharyngeal muscle spasms on laryngoscopy. In four patients, voice improvement was reported after injections that included pharyngeal folds, while laryngeal injections had not helped in some cases. This case series cannot prove treatment works. SLP Other 2018 Supra-Segmental Changes in Speech Production as a Result of Spectral Feedback Degradation: Comparison with Lombard Speech. Language and speech Normal-hearing speakers slowed down, raised pitch and loudness, then became quieter and lower-pitched when hearing simulated cochlear implant feedback. Listeners preferred their baseline speech and recognized feedback-altered speech more slowly. SLP Other 2018 Temporal Segmentation for Laryngeal High-Speed Videoendoscopy in Connected Speech. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation An automated method matched a trained rater's manual segmentation of voicing and epiglottic obstruction in one healthy speaker's high-speed laryngeal video during connected speech. It is a technical validation, not evidence of improved patient care. SLP Other 2018 LVC Timing in Infant Pig Swallowing and the Effect of Safe Swallowing. Dysphagia In infant pigs, unsafe swallows consistently showed delayed laryngeal vestibule closure and altered tongue and hyoid timing compared to safe swallows. However, nerve damage itself did not change these closure timings, suggesting the mechanism for post-surgical aspiration remains unclear. SLP Case-Control 2018 Discrimination of Voice Pitch and Vocal-Tract Length in Cochlear Implant Users. Ear and hearing Cochlear implant users need voice differences far larger than normal hearing listeners to tell speakers apart. While pitch changes are still detectable, vocal tract length differences are not, meaning implants fail to convey the subtle cues used to identify who is speaking. SLP Other 2018 Factors associated with vocal fry among college students. Logopedics, phoniatrics, vocology The proportion of students judged to use vocal fry did not differ across the nine acoustic conditions. Sporadic caffeine use and background noise were associated with lower likelihood. The study is small and not causal. SLP Other 2018 The Impact of Glottal Configuration on Speech Breathing. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation When twelve healthy adults produced a voice similar to a breathy voice, they used larger speech breaths than in their typical voice, started at higher lung volumes, ended lower, and took more breaths. SLP Other 2017 Vocalic transitions as markers of speech acoustic changes with STN-DBS in Parkinson's Disease. Journal of communication disorders Turning STN-DBS on or off, with medication unchanged, did not show a group-level change in glide F2 slope, coarticulation pattern, or intelligibility. People with Parkinson's had shallower glide F2 slopes and lower intelligibility than controls, with mixed individual responses. SLP Pilot 2018 Computational Analysis of Pharyngeal Swallowing Mechanics in Patients with Motor Neuron Disease: A Pilot Investigation. Dysphagia Patients with motor neuron disease showed greater head and neck extension and hyolaryngeal elevation compared to healthy controls. These changes appear to compensate for reduced tongue base retraction and pharyngeal shortening, though mechanics varied widely between patients. SLP Other 2018 Alterations to Swallowing Physiology as the Result of Effortful Swallowing in Healthy Seniors. Dysphagia In 44 healthy seniors, effortful swallowing did not improve pharyngeal constriction and was associated with worse pharyngeal shortening and more residue in the pyriform sinuses, while all timing measures were prolonged. Vallecular residue and penetration-aspiration scores did not change. SLP Meta-Analysis 2018 A meta-analysis of the association between vocalizations and expressive language in children with autism spectrum disorder. Research in developmental disabilities Vocalizations strongly correlate with expressive language in children with autism. Concurrent measures showed a stronger link than longitudinal ones. This supports assessing prelinguistic vocalizations to predict language outcomes. SLP Cohort 2018 Temporal Analysis of Factors Associated with EAT-10 in Outpatients with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia from a Tertiary Care Clinic. Dysphagia Swallowing symptoms did not change over six months in 42 outpatients, most with mild dysphagia. A PEG tube at baseline was linked to EAT-10 change, and many patients scored zero on items. SLP Other 2018 An Investigation of the Post-laryngectomy Swallow Using Videofluoroscopy and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). Dysphagia Both scans often showed residue after laryngectomy, but the scans and expert raters disagreed too much to say which tool is more useful. Videofluoroscopy was better for the neopharynx; FEES often found more residue. SLP Narrative Review 2018 Contemporary Approaches to the Management of Post-stroke Apraxia of Speech. Seminars in speech and language Objective acoustic tests and brain imaging may help distinguish post-stroke apraxia of speech from aphasia or dysarthria, but evidence is early. Speech therapy should not rely on imaging alone; articulatory-kinematic treatment has support. SLP Other 2018 Speech Processing to Improve the Perception of Speech in Background Noise for Children With Auditory Processing Disorder and Typically Developing Peers. Trends in hearing Children understood more words when speech was processed with SSDRC than unprocessed. The gain was 29.1 percentage points in speech-shaped noise and 7.3 percentage points with a competing speaker, and children with APD still did worse in that competing speaker. SLP Other 2018 Bilaterally Combined Electric and Acoustic Hearing in Mandarin-Speaking Listeners: The Population With Poor Residual Hearing. Trends in hearing For Mandarin speakers with severe-to-profound hearing in the aided ear, adding a hearing aid to a cochlear implant improved only tone recognition when tones were equal in length and sentence recognition in noise. Average gains were 4 and 6 percentage points. SLP RCT 2018 Comparison of Two Music Training Approaches on Music and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users. Trends in hearing Six weeks of music training in cochlear implant users showed no clear improvement in word or sentence understanding. Computer pitch/timbre training improved melodic contour identification, and group music therapy improved emotion identification. ← Previous PAGE 2 OF 17 Next →
