PT RCT 2017 Acute effects of different foam rolling volumes in the interset rest period on maximum repetition performance. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Passive rest between sets of knee extensions produced more repetitions than foam rolling the quadriceps for 60, 90, or 120 seconds. Foam rolling for 120 seconds produced fewer repetitions than 60 or 90 seconds. PT RCT 2017 Immediate effect of ankle balance taping on dynamic and static balance of soccer players with acute ankle sprain. Journal of physical therapy science Ankle balance taping immediately reduced sway length and speed and raised limit of stability in 16 soccer players with acute ankle sprain, compared with placebo taping and no taping. This is an immediate effect only. PT Case Series 2016 Knee rotationplasty: motion of the body centre of mass during walking. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation In three patients with knee rotationplasty, muscle work during walking was in line with normal values for speed, but push-off power was asymmetric. The unaffected limb supplied most power, while the rotated limb supplied much less. PT RCT 2017 Effects of short-term plyometric training on physical fitness parameters in female futsal athletes. Journal of physical therapy science Four weeks of plyometric training improved jump distance, flexibility and body composition in female futsal athletes. The control group, which continued standard training alone, showed no such gains. This offers a low-cost, equipment-light addition to conditioning programs. PT Narrative Review 2017 Modern pain neuroscience in clinical practice: applied to post-cancer, paediatric and sports-related pain. A similar pattern appeared during mid-altitude training and before competition. PT Case Report 2017 Effects of 2-week intermittent training in hypobaric hypoxia on the aerobic energy metabolism and performance of cycling athletes with disabilities. Journal of physical therapy science Three athletes with physical disabilities shortened 14-km time trials and reached higher loads after 12 hypoxic training sessions, but peak oxygen measures did not clearly improve. Training, hypoxia, coaching, and iron supplements were given together. Only three cases. PT Other 2017 Gait initiation and termination strategies in patients with Prader-Willi syndrome. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Adults with Prader-Willi syndrome started and stopped walking with slower weight shifts and longer transition times than healthy adults. Compared with obese controls without PWS, they still showed slower side-to-side shifts when beginning to walk. PT Other 2017 Comparison of muscle synergies before and after 10 minutes of running. Journal of physical therapy science After 10 minutes of running, modules 1 to 3 stayed the same in eight healthy men, but module 4 shifted from trunk muscles to muscles around the pelvis. This was a lab EMG finding, not a proven injury risk. PT RCT 2017 Effect of complex training on carbon monoxide, cardiorespiratory function, and body mass among college students at the initial stage of stopping smoking. Journal of physical therapy science During 12 weeks of not smoking, male students doing 30-minute aerobic plus weight training five times weekly had lower exhaled carbon monoxide, higher treadmill fitness, less body fat, and more muscle than controls. PT Other 2017 Effects of chronic ankle instability and induced mediolateral muscular fatigue of the ankle on competitive taekwondo athletes. Journal of physical therapy science Taekwondo athletes with chronic ankle instability landed with less ankle eversion and external rotation and less knee shock absorption than controls. After fatigue, controls changed landing angles and loading rate; athletes with instability did not change loading rate. PT OT Systematic Review 2017 A Systematic Review on the Effect of Mechanical Stretch on Hypertrophic Scars after Burn Injuries. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Burn scar stretch, massage and splint trials were mixed, and each was combined with other burn care. Do not treat any single component as proven. PT Other 2017 Comparison of physical activities of female football players in junior high school and high school. Their strength, balance, endurance, hopping, flexibility, and curl-ups did not differ. PT Other 2017 Content validity and test-retest reliability of a low back pain questionnaire in Zimbabwean adolescents. Archives of physiotherapy A Zimbabwean adolescent low back pain questionnaire was judged relevant by experts, but answers about sciatica and functional limitation were inconsistent between assessments. Use it to screen pain and factors, not to score function. PT Systematic Review 2018 Exercise training to reduce sympathetic nerve activity in heart failure patients. A systematic review and meta-analysis. Brazilian journal of physical therapy Four months of aerobic cycle training lowered muscle sympathetic nerve activity compared with a control condition of medication and daily-life follow-up in adults with chronic heart failure across five randomized trials. This measure is not a commonly used clinical outcome. PT Other 2017 Correlation between sleep and psychological mood states in female wheelchair basketball players on a Japanese national team. Journal of physical therapy science Among 17 female wheelchair basketball players, better sleep efficiency, fewer sleep disturbances and lower total sleep problem scores went with higher vigor. 9 of 17 met the insomnia cutoff. PT Systematic Review 2017 Effectiveness of resistance exercise compared to aerobic exercise without insulin therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis. Brazilian journal of physical therapy In adults with type 2 diabetes not using insulin, resistance exercise and aerobic exercise did not differ for blood sugar control, body mass index or lipids; only cardiorespiratory fitness favored resistance, from very low-quality evidence. PT RCT 2017 The effects of place running exercises on the pulmonary function of normal adults. Journal of physical therapy science Healthy college students who did place running for four weeks had greater vital capacity than those doing stationary cycling. Not all breathing measures changed. PT RCT 2017 Enhancement of motor skill learning by a combination of ideal model-observation and self-observation. Journal of physical therapy science Watching both a model and their own swing video made the angle closer to 90 degrees after the final practice than watching their own video alone. The difference did not remain one week later in healthy novice golfers. PT Other 2017 Applicability of ultrasonography for evaluating trunk muscles size in athletes: a study focused on baseball batters. Journal of physical therapy science In baseball batters, ultrasound thickness of trunk muscles closely matched MRI muscle size, except multifidus showed weaker agreement. Ultrasound may estimate trunk muscle size, but not performance. PT OT RCT 2017 Accelerometer-Determined Physical Activity and Clinical Low Back Pain Measures in Adolescents With Chronic or Subacute Recurrent Low Back Pain. The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy Accelerometer data showed no meaningful link between how much adolescents with chronic low back pain moved and their pain, disability, or quality of life. Activity levels did not explain clinical symptoms, suggesting movement volume alone is not a reliable marker of severity. PT Other 2018 Translation, cross-adaptation and measurement properties of the Brazilian version of the ACL-RSI Scale and ACL-QoL Questionnaire in patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Brazilian journal of physical therapy The Brazilian Portuguese versions of the ACL-RSI and ACL-QoL are reliable and valid for assessing psychological readiness and quality of life in patients after ACL reconstruction. Knee strength did not differ. PT Systematic Review 2017 Physical activity and cognitive function in adults with multiple sclerosis: an integrative review. Disability and rehabilitation In adults with MS, more active or fitter people had better scores on cognitive tests of processing speed, memory and executive function. Exercise trials were mixed, so this does not show exercise improves cognition. PT OT Narrative Review 2018 Passive prosthetic hands and tools: A literature review. Prosthetics and orthotics international Passive prostheses are used by about one in three potential users, mostly for appearance and comfort, not just as a step toward active devices. They offer limited but sufficient function for many daily tasks. Research should focus on adjustable hands and tools for work and sports. PT Other 2017 The effects of the menstrual cycle on the static balance in healthy young women. Journal of physical therapy science In 18 healthy young women, sway while standing was higher at ovulation than early in menstruation. Higher sway means less steady balance. Consider lower intensity balance training at ovulation. PT Other 2017 Audiospatial cognitive ability of visually impaired athletes in static and dynamic spatial cognitive tasks. Journal of physical therapy science Blind athletes did not locate sounds better than sighted subjects in static tasks. In dynamic tasks, they had smaller errors to the left. The groups were small, so this is not evidence of a training benefit. PT Cohort 2018 Family History of Migraine Associated With Posttraumatic Migraine Symptoms Following Sport-Related Concussion. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Teen athletes with a family history of migraine were more likely to have posttraumatic migraine symptoms within two weeks: 57% versus 33%. Family history alone did not predict worse thinking or dizziness screening results. PT Other 2018 Experience does not influence injury-related joint kinematics and kinetics in distance runners. Gait & posture Years of running experience was not associated with injury-related running mechanics in 100 healthy distance runners. Age and speed were linked to knee, hip, stride, and loading measures. PT Cohort 2017 Potentially Preventable Within-Stay Readmissions Among Medicare Fee-for-Service Beneficiaries Receiving Inpatient Rehabilitation. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation During inpatient rehabilitation, 3.5% of Medicare stays were readmitted for conditions considered potentially preventable. Their first step was also slower. PT RCT 2017 Effects of the Integration of Dynamic Weight Shifting Training Into Treadmill Training on Walking Function of Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized Controlled Study. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Between-group walking speed gains were not different, but treadmill training plus cable-driven leg and pelvis assistance gave a larger endurance gain than treadmill training alone. Within the robotic group, self-selected speed and endurance improved after training, but not at follow-up. PT Other 2018 Kinematic Differences During Single-Leg Step-Down Between Individuals With Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome and Individuals Without Hip Pain. The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy During a single-leg step-down, people with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome showed, on average, 4.9° more hip bending and 4.1° more forward pelvic tilt than people without hip pain. This was a movement difference, not a treatment result. PT Pilot 2018 The effect of aroma stimulation during isotonic exercise on the rating of perceived exertion and blood fatigue factors of athletes with patellofemoral pain syndrome. Journal of physical therapy science Aroma oil mixture lowered perceived effort after some leg exercises in 7 athletes with kneecap pain. One fatigue marker rose in the control group but not clearly in the aroma group. Other markers rose in both groups. PT OT Other 2018 The effect of insole on muscle activity and muscle fatigue at sit to standing of tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius in adult male. Journal of physical therapy science In 30 young men, wearing insoles of different heights did not change muscle activity during sit-to-stand. However, calf muscle fatigue was significantly higher with 5.5 cm insoles compared to lower heights, suggesting a potential increase in muscular demand. PT Cohort 2018 Do moderate aerobic exercise and strength training influence electromyographic biofeedback of the pelvic floor muscles in female non-athletes? Journal of physical therapy science Over three months, pelvic floor contraction scores rose in all three groups of female non-athletes, but the largest rise occurred in previously inactive women who started moderate gym exercise. The study did not randomize participants. PT RCT 2018 Reduced Hip Adduction Is Associated With Improved Function After Movement-Pattern Training in Young People With Chronic Hip Joint Pain. The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy In 28 young adults with chronic hip pain, movement-pattern training plus strengthening was followed by improved function. Larger reductions in hip adduction during a single-leg squat were associated with better Harris Hip Scores, but the study cannot separate training from strengthening or prove it works. PT RCT 2018 Effects of mechanical-bed massage on exercise-induced back fatigue in athletes. Journal of physical therapy science In 12 athletes, mechanical-bed massage lowered perceived back fatigue compared with rest. Back muscle endurance did not differ, and some heart-rate measures changed immediately. PT Case-Control 2018 Postural stability for taekwondo athletes with repetitive ankle sprains during a single-leg stance. Journal of physical therapy science In taekwondo athletes with repeated ankle sprains, injured-limb sway did not differ from controls during an eyes-closed single-leg stance. Uninjured-limb sway was greater than controls. PT OT Qualitative 2018 Participant-Reported Benefits of Involvement in an Adaptive Sports Program: A Qualitative Study. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Adaptive sports participants described physical, social, and athletic identity benefits, but injury fear, transport, cost, time, and lack of program information limited sustained participation. Staff and peers helped them continue. PT Cohort 2018 Optimal Screening for Prediction of Referral and Outcome (OSPRO) for Musculoskeletal Pain Conditions: Results From the Validation Cohort. The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy The 10-item OSPRO-YF and 10-item OSPRO-ROS improved prediction of some 12-month outcomes only slightly after demographic, clinical and baseline scores were considered. Use them as adjuncts, not stand-alone decision tools. PT OT RCT 2018 Reducing barriers to healthy weight: Planned and responsive adaptations to a lifestyle intervention to serve people with impaired mobility. Disability and health journal People with mobility impairments received an adapted group weight-loss program with phone sessions, arm-based activity tracking, adaptive cooking, caregiver support, problem-solving, and other changes. The paper describes the adaptation, not tested effectiveness.
