PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 The impact of developmental coordination disorder on educational achievement in secondary school. Research in developmental disabilities Teenagers classified with DCD at 7-8 achieved fewer GCSE exams than peers: 39% reached 5 or more passes versus 70% controls. Once reading, social communication and hyperactivity/inattention were taken into account, DCD alone was not clearly linked to lower GCSE attainment. OT Qualitative 2018 Understanding parents' concerns about their children with autism taking public school transportation in Los Angeles County. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Parents of children with autism described school bus rides becoming unsafe when substitute drivers and aides did not know their children by name. The children were briefly lost, and trust in school transport broke, even though families still valued the bus for independence. OT SLP Cohort 2018 Parent and Teacher Concordance of Child Outcomes for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents and teachers often disagreed about children with autism. Parents rated adaptive skills higher, but reported more social withdrawal and better social communication than teachers. Agreement was moderate, varied by domain, and depended on cognitive ability. OT SLP Cohort 2018 The Association Between Child and Family Characteristics and the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Caregivers of Children with Autism in Mid-Childhood. Journal of autism and developmental disorders 48% of caregivers of children with autism aged 8 to 12 met criteria for mental health difficulties, and wellbeing was lower than expected. Child behaviour problems, poor daily living skills and intellectual disability were linked to distress; core autism symptoms were not. OT SLP Other 2018 What About the Girls? Sex-Based Differences in Autistic Traits and Adaptive Skills. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Boys and girls with autism and no intellectual disability scored similarly on observed diagnostic tests, but parents rated girls as having stronger autistic traits and lower daily living skills. PT OT Cohort 2018 Effect of the frequency of therapy on the performance of activities of daily living in children with cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science Physical therapy frequency did not show significant differences in daily living skills. Intensive occupational therapy was associated with a significant overall daily living skill improvement compared with bimonthly therapy, and therapy frequency was correlated with mobility and social function. OT Pilot 2018 Links between sleep and daytime behaviour problems in children with Down syndrome. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Parents reported more restless sleep and other night-time sleep problems in children with Down syndrome, and these reports were related to more conduct problems, anxiety, and hyperactivity at home and school. Shorter sleep measured by a wrist watch was also related to inattention. PT OT Cohort 2018 Prospective Changes in Vestibular and Ocular Motor Impairment After Concussion. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT VOMS symptom scores and near-point convergence distance rose above baseline after concussion, especially days 1-7. When baseline symptoms were subtracted from post-injury scores, only vertical eye movement reflex and visual motion sensitivity differed from baseline at days 8-14. PT OT Cohort 2018 Rehabilitation Utilization for Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in the United States in the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Recurrent falls strongly predict receiving fall-related rehabilitation, but lower education and Hispanic ethnicity reduce access even after accounting for falls. Therapists should not assume clinical need alone drives referrals, as demographic barriers persist. PT OT RCT 2018 Ergonomic behaviour of learners in a digitally driven school environment: Modification using an ergonomic intervention programme. The South African journal of physiotherapy A single 45-minute school session on posture, bag weight, and stretches, reinforced by stickers and web links, improved computer posture in adolescents over six months. The intervention group had no learners in the highest risk postural category at follow-up, unlike the control group. OT SLP Other 2018 Quantitative evaluation of handwriting: factors that affect pen operating skills. Journal of physical therapy science Tracing accuracy depends on pen pressure variability, not just force or speed. Pressing harder increased wrist angles and reduced accuracy, while writing faster also reduced accuracy. For therapists, measuring how much pen pressure fluctuates may be more useful than total force when assessing handwriting control. OT Other 2018 Lessons learned from women in leadership positions. Work (Reading, Mass.) There is no clinical finding to act on. This is a leadership commentary about women in professional workplaces. PT OT SLP Pilot 2018 Impact of sleep on executive functioning in school-age children with Down syndrome. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Parents reporting restless sleep in children with Down syndrome also reported more trouble with impulse control, shifting, and working memory. Teachers noted impulse issues too. However, sleep problems did not predict actual performance on cognitive tests. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2018 Everyday Activities for Children with Mitochondrial Disorder: A Retrospective Chart Review. Occupational therapy international Children with mitochondrial disorders across all functioning levels engaged in the same nine activity categories, from self-care to leisure. The difference was not what they did, but how: varying levels of assistance, adaptive devices, and energy management were required for participation. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Executive function in school-aged children with cerebral palsy: Relationship with speech and language. Research in developmental disabilities Children with cerebral palsy showed elevated executive function difficulties regardless of their speech and language abilities. Parents reported significantly higher problem behaviors than expected in typical children. Clinicians should screen for executive function issues in all patients, even those with strong communication skills. OT Pilot 2018 Engaging persons with disabilities as community teachers for experiential learning in occupational therapy education. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Occupational therapy students who took part in a programme with community teachers reported less anxiety and changed assumptions about what people with disabilities could do. Their attitudes improved after the programme, but there was no control group. OT Other 2017 Relationship between Motor Coordination, Cognitive Abilities, and Academic Achievement in Japanese Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Children with neurodevelopmental disorders scored lower on motor coordination than peers. Better manual dexterity and balance were linked to better reading, writing, and arithmetic, but the study did not show motor training improves school skills. OT SLP Case-Control 2019 Brief Report: The ADOS Calibrated Severity Score Best Measures Autism Diagnostic Symptom Severity in Pre-School Children. Journal of autism and developmental disorders In preschool children with autism, the ADOS calibrated severity score was less tied to expressive language abilities, adaptive behavior, and background factors than the ADOS total score or clinician ratings. OT Cohort 2018 Factors associated with sustained community employment among adults with autism and co-occurring intellectual disability. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Among adults with autism and intellectual disability, only 14.3% kept paid community work for 18 months. Daily living skills, family income, mother's social network, school inclusion, and living in larger-population areas were linked with staying employed. OT Other 2019 Vocational Rehabilitation of Young Adults with Psychological Disabilities. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Young adults with psychological disabilities in German vocational rehabilitation waited longer to start rehabilitation and obtained employment less often than other rehabilitants. Interviewees described needing early access and gradual work routines. PT OT SLP Other 2019 The Gestalt of functioning in autism spectrum disorder: Results of the international conference to develop final consensus International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health core sets. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Experts chose a list of autism functioning areas to assess: daily tasks, participation, environment and supports across ages. This is a framework, not evidence that a treatment works. OT Survey 2018 Parent Expectations and Preparatory Activities as Adolescents with ASD Transition to Adulthood. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Parents of adolescent females with ASD reported lower expectations for their future and enrolled daughters in adult-roles classes far more often than sons. Higher expectations predicted some transition talks and activities, but not all. PT OT Survey 2018 Leisure Participation Patterns for School Age Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Findings from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health. Journal of autism and developmental disorders School-age children with autism had lower participation in physical, skill, and jobs or chores activities, especially from age 11 to 17. Screen-based recreation was similar, but social participation was lower at age 16 to 17. OT Cohort 2018 Transitional Dynamics of Household Food Insecurity Impact Children's Developmental Outcomes. Journal of developmental and behavioral pediatrics : JDBP Worsening food insecurity was linked to lower first-grade math and working memory scores. Marginal food insecurity was linked to worse self-control and interpersonal skills, but no food insecurity category was linked to internalizing behaviors. OT SLP Other 2019 Subtyping the Autism Spectrum Disorder: Comparison of Children with High Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children previously labelled Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism looked similar in core autism features, but the Asperger group had higher IQ, more pedantic speech, and fewer language and school difficulties. The old labels did not map cleanly onto DSM-5 severity levels. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Longitudinal assessment of stability of sensory features in children with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Some sensory problems eased over time, but children with more severe problems at the first visit usually stayed relatively worse. More occupational, speech-language, or total therapy hours were linked to worse later sensory problems, not better. OT Other 2019 Variation in restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests relates to inhibitory control and shifting in children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Children with autism who showed more restricted interests and rituals also had more trouble ignoring conflicting cues on a Stroop task and more parent-reported difficulty shifting. Both abilities were linked independently of age and IQ. OT SLP Cohort 2019 Growth mixture models of adaptive behavior in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Most high school students with autism showed teacher-reported gains in communication, daily living, and socialization, but their scores stayed below age expectations. Students in programs rated higher for independence were more likely to be in the improving groups. OT SLP Survey 2019 Treatment patterns in children with autism in the United States. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Most US children with autism received several non-drug therapies, with speech therapy the most common and usually school-based. Rural residence was linked to less therapy and lower intensity; insurance type was not consistently linked to therapy. OT Survey 2019 A Description of the Educational Setting Among Individuals With Fragile X Syndrome. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Most children with Fragile X in this survey spent at least some time in a regular classroom, but caregivers reported many were substantially below grade level, and older males spent less regular classroom time. OT SLP Survey 2019 Flourishing in children with autism spectrum disorders. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Children with autism had lower parent-rated social competence and behavioral control than peers, but school motivation was similar. This helps therapists target social and regulation goals, but it does not show treatment works. OT SLP Other 2019 More Than IQ: Executive Function Explains Adaptive Behavior Above and Beyond Nonverbal IQ in Youth With Autism and Lower IQ. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities In 100 youth with autism and lower IQ, parent-reported monitoring of behavior and its effect on others was linked to better communication and, less strongly, socialization after accounting for age and nonverbal IQ. Daily living skills did not show this link. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Loss in services precedes high school exit for teens with autism spectrum disorder: A longitudinal study. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research Speech therapy and occupational therapy declined before and at high school exit for young people with autism. Unmet needs rose at exit. Physical therapy changed little, and service loss differed by intellectual disability status. OT Other 2019 Reliability of Informant-Report Measures of Executive Functioning in Children With Down Syndrome. American journal on intellectual and developmental disabilities Many school-age children with Down syndrome were rated by parents and teachers as having clinically concerning executive functioning, especially working memory and monitoring. Their ratings did not agree strongly, so home and school views are both useful. OT Survey 2018 Facilitators and Barriers of Assistive Technology and Learning Environment for Children with Special Needs. Occupational therapy international Students with different disabilities saw the same assistive technology and school environment as help or barrier. Wheelchairs were seen as helpful for students with physical disability, while slopes were seen as barriers for students with visual disability. Check each child's needs before choosing equipment. OT Other 2019 Work-related injuries within a large urban public school system in the Mid-Western United States. Work (Reading, Mass.) No significant overall injury trend change was found for 2014 and 2015. Slip, trip and fall and combative situations were most common among 598 reported school district injuries, and facility workers had the most severe injury burden. OT Survey 2019 Active Ageing Level and Time Use of Elderly Persons in a Thai Suburban Community. Occupational therapy international Older adults in a Thai community school had moderate active ageing overall. Those with higher active ageing spent more time in leisure, social activities, and outdoors with others. Rest and sleep took the largest part of the day. OT Systematic Review 2019 Effectiveness of paediatric occupational therapy for children with disabilities: A systematic review. Australian occupational therapy journal Top-down, activity-based interventions like CO-OP and CIMT have strong evidence for children with disabilities, while bottom-up approaches like NDT and sensory integration lack it. Parent-led home programs are as effective as therapist-delivered care. PT OT Other 2019 Physical fitness and executive functions in adolescents: cross-sectional associations with academic achievement. Journal of physical therapy science Several fitness scores related to school grades and some executive-function scores in 713 adolescents. Balance did not relate to grades, and this cannot show fitness improves grades. OT Other 2019 Validation of the Revised Knox Preschool Play Scale for the Brazilian Population. Occupational therapy international Brazilian Revised Knox Preschool Play Scale gave mixed results. Many play items were rated clearly, but some were not rated the same by two raters or did not score consistently. Therapists should not rely on it without item review. OT Qualitative 2019 "Together on the Way": Occupational Therapy in Mainstream Education-A Narrative Study of Emerging Practice in Switzerland. Occupational therapy international Five Swiss occupational therapists working in mainstream schools described their role as bridging the health and education systems. They focused on school-related occupations like handwriting or play to facilitate participation, emphasizing collaboration with teachers over direct clinical treatment. OT Survey 2019 Occupational Therapy Practice in Mainstream Schools: Results from an Online Survey in Switzerland. Occupational therapy international 97% of Swiss pediatric occupational therapists collaborated with schools, but only 48% provided direct mainstream school services. Those services were mostly paid by health or disability insurance, relied on nonstandardized evaluation, and focused on school environment. PT OT Survey 2019 Low Back Pain and Associated Factors among Primary School Teachers in Mekele City, North Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study. Occupational therapy international Low back pain was reported by 74.8% of primary school teachers in Mekele. Sleep disturbance and prolonged standing were linked to higher reports of pain, but this was not a test of treatment. PT OT Survey 2019 Level of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs towards patients with chronic low back pain among final year School of Therapeutic Sciences students at the University of the Witwatersrand - A cross-sectional study. The South African journal of physiotherapy Final-year therapeutic science students scored 6.01 out of 12 on pain knowledge and 63.1 out of 105 on beliefs that chronic pain justifies impairment. Physiotherapy students scored higher than occupational therapy students. OT Qualitative 2019 A Service User Perspective Informing the Role of Occupational Therapy in School Transition Practice for High School Learners with TBI: An African Perspective. Occupational therapy international Most adolescents with TBI and their caregivers said school reentry was poorly prepared and poorly supported. They wanted clear communication between health and school, practical accommodations, emotional support, accessible buildings, and timely funding. OT Survey 2020 The effects of service dogs on psychosocial health and wellbeing for individuals with physical disabilities or chronic conditions. Disability and rehabilitation People with a service dog reported better overall psychosocial health, including emotional, social, and work or school functioning, than people waiting for one. It was not associated with anger, companionship, or sleep. OT SLP Other 2020 Evaluation of a Transition to University Programme for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Autistic students reported fewer worries about university after a three-day summer school and rated it helpful and enjoyable. The programme included many components, so it cannot show which part helped. OT Cohort 2020 Brief Report: Behavior Disorders and Social Skills in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Does IQ Matter? Journal of autism and developmental disorders Mothers and teachers found no clear difference between adolescents with autism and intellectual disability and those with autism and higher IQ in behavior problems, social skills, or parent well-being. PT OT SLP Cohort 2020 Changing Healthcare and School Needs in the First Year After Traumatic Brain Injury. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Unmet or unrecognized health care needs were 22% at 3 months, with 13% unrecognized and 7% unmet at 12 months. Needs shifted from physical to cognitive and socioemotional, and combined health care or school need was 28% at 3 months and 24% at 12 months. OT SLP Systematic Review 2019 The Effectiveness of Rehabilitation Interventions on the Employment and Functioning of People with Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Review. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Supported work and education with work experience were linked to employment in the open labor market. Sheltered work did not increase employment. ← Previous PAGE 3 OF 12 Next →
