OT Other 2018 Development of the Japanese version of the Westmead Home Safety Assessment for the elderly in Japan. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT A Japanese home safety checklist for older adults was best supported for 49 items, including stairs, seating, bathroom, bath, toilet, footwear, and floors. The full 71-item version was not fully supported, especially household tasks like laundry, cleaning, cooking, medication, and safety calls. OT Survey 2018 Correlation between Leisure Activity Time and Life Satisfaction: Based on KOSTAT Time Use Survey Data. Occupational therapy international More daily leisure time was linked to higher life satisfaction in older South Korean adults. Outdoor activities were linked to higher satisfaction; indoor activities were linked to lower satisfaction. PT OT Cohort 2017 Factors Affecting Mortality and Hospital Admissions after Hip Surgery among Elderly Patients with Hip Fracture in Hong Kong - Review of a Three-Year Follow-Up. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT Three years after hip fracture surgery, 33.4% of these older patients had died and 71.7% had been readmitted. Male patients, delayed surgery, low albumin, cognitive impairment, and assisted walking or low discharge independence flagged higher risk. OT Cohort 2018 Influence of study population definition on the effect of age on outcomes after blunt head trauma. Brain injury Older adults after blunt head trauma had better 1-month functional recovery and fewer post-concussion symptoms than younger adults, whether or not they met TBI criteria. PT OT RCT 2018 Effectiveness of falls prevention intervention programme in community-dwelling older people in Thailand: Randomized controlled trial. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao A four-month physiotherapist-delivered home-based programme combining balance exercise, falls advice and a booklet did not reduce falls in community-dwelling older people in Thailand. OT Case Series 2018 Use of parametric speaker for older people with dementia in a residential care setting: A preliminary study of two cases. Hong Kong journal of occupational therapy : HKJOT In two residents with dementia, a ceiling-mounted directional speaker playing favorite music reduced wandering and agitation only while the music was on. There was no lasting effect after the session ended, and no change in overall dementia stage. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 The role of biopsychosocial factors in the rehabilitation process of individuals with a stroke. Work (Reading, Mass.) Patients who started rehab more than 16 weeks after stroke, had no family care support, or were single or widowed showed significantly less improvement in mobility and daily activities. Depression and low self-efficacy at admission also predicted poor outcomes. Younger age under 55 was unexpectedly linked to lower efficacy. OT Cohort 2019 The modifying effect of positive emotion on the relationship between cognitive impairment and disability among older Mexican Americans: a cohort study. Disability and rehabilitation Positive emotion did not change the link between cognitive impairment and new disability over time in older Mexican Americans. It did appear to narrow the gap in current disability between impaired and normal cognition. OT Other 2019 Characterising omission errors in everyday task completion and cognitive correlates in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Neuropsychological rehabilitation Older adults with multi-domain mild cognitive impairment and dementia omitted more action steps in everyday tasks than healthy adults and those with single-domain MCI. Dementia also showed more preparatory and concluding omissions. Memory was linked to all omission types. PT OT Survey 2019 Difficulty and independence in shopping among older Americans: more than just leaving the house. Disability and rehabilitation Broken steps and neighborhood disorder were linked to more shopping difficulty in older adults, but links weakened after health and physical capacity were considered. Check the route from the home when older adults report shopping difficulty. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Cluster Analysis of Vulnerable Groups in Acute Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In acute traumatic brain injury rehab, 148 patients formed four vulnerability clusters. Clusters differed in length of stay and functional independence gains, and elderly medically complex patients were the oldest cluster. PT OT Cohort 2018 Which Neuromuscular Attributes Are Associated With Changes in Mobility Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults With Symptomatic Lumbar Spinal Stenosis? Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation For older adults with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis, low trunk endurance, weak legs and stiff knees predicted mobility decline over two years. These three attributes were also predictive in those without stenosis, suggesting rehabilitation targets should focus on these impairments regardless of diagnosis. PT OT Cohort 2019 Assessment of Mobility in Older People Hospitalized for Medical Illness Using the de Morton Mobility Index and Cumulated Ambulation Score-Validity and Minimal Clinical Important Difference. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) The DEMMI detects mobility changes in hospitalized older adults, including those with severe cognitive impairment. A 10.7-point improvement marks a meaningful change. The CAS is quicker but hits a ceiling, making it poor for tracking recovery in high-functioning patients. OT Cohort 2019 Population of Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury in Skilled Nursing Facilities: A Decade of Change. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation More people with TBI were admitted to U.S. skilled nursing facilities from 2005 to 2014. They were older, and fewer had severe functional or cognitive impairment. OT Survey 2018 Functional Impairments Associated With Patient Activation Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older adults with greater limitations in basic self-care or household tasks reported lower confidence managing their own care and poorer communication with doctors. Health information-seeking was less consistent, especially with basic self-care limitations. OT Other 2018 Older Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Sweden: A Register Study of Diagnoses, Psychiatric Care Utilization and Psychotropic Medication of 601 Individuals. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Among older adults with registered autism spectrum disorder diagnoses who needed municipal support in Sweden, specialist psychiatric care use and psychotropic medication were common, particularly in those with Asperger’s syndrome or intellectual disability. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Improvement During Inpatient Rehabilitation Among Older Adults With Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, and Stroke. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older adults with Guillain-Barré, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, or stroke all improved in self-care, mobility, and cognition during inpatient rehabilitation. Patients with Guillain-Barré showed the largest gains, followed by stroke, while those with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease made more modest but still meaningful progress. PT OT Other 2018 Influences of Age, Obesity, and Adverse Drug Effects on Balance and Mobility Testing Scores in Ambulatory Older Adults. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) Age, body mass index, and a new drug index score predicted poorer balance and mobility test results in 57 older adults. The drug index worked even when standard fall-risk tests showed normal scores, suggesting it may help identify hidden risks. OT Qualitative 2019 Multi-stakeholder perspectives on information communication technology training for older adults: implications for teaching and learning. Disability and rehabilitation. Assistive technology Care providers, trainers and older adults described individualized technology training tied to meaningful daily life as important. They reported fear, low interest and unsupportive peers as barriers, and rapport, simplicity, patience and self-directed learning as supports. PT OT RCT 2019 Effects of geriatric interdisciplinary home rehabilitation on complications and readmissions after hip fracture: a randomized controlled trial. Clinical rehabilitation Older adults with hip fracture who received conventional geriatric care plus home rehabilitation had similar complications and readmissions as those who received conventional geriatric care. Adding home rehabilitation did not reduce complications, readmissions, or days in hospital after discharge. PT OT Cohort 2019 Reliability and Fall Risk Detection for the BESTest and Mini-BESTest in Older Adults. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) The BESTest and Mini-BESTest are stable over four weeks in older adults with balance problems, so a drop in score likely reflects a real change rather than test error. However, neither test reliably identified people who had fallen in the past year. PT OT RCT 2019 Change in Depression, Confidence, and Physical Function Among Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) Depression scores did not change clearly. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment in a meaningful activity program had short-term gains in confidence and community participation; gains did not persist at follow-up. PT OT Cohort 2019 Predictors of Functional Change in a Skilled Nursing Facility Population. Journal of geriatric physical therapy (2001) No measured factor predicted lower-extremity function change, severe disability at discharge, or slow walking at discharge in 140 skilled nursing facility patients. 87% improved meaningfully, but 69% had severe disability, and higher depression scores tracked with smaller gait-speed gains. PT OT Qualitative 2019 A qualitative study of patient-centered goal-setting in geriatric rehabilitation: patient and professional perspectives. Clinical rehabilitation Older patients in geriatric rehabilitation first aim for self-care and going home, then set more ambitious goals after discharge. Teams focused on discharge criteria. Long-term goals were often unrecorded. PT OT Survey 2019 Individual and Environmental Determinants of Late-Life Community Disability for Persons Aging With Cardiovascular Disease. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation 44.8% of community-dwelling adults with self-reported heart disease could not take part in valued activities because of health or functioning, compared with 29.0% without heart disease. Lack of transportation, needing mobility help, and home-entry modifications were linked to more of these restrictions. PT OT Cohort 2018 The baseline speed of 10-m gait predicts ambulatory discharge for hospitalized frail elderly after DOPPO rehabilitation. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation In frail hospitalized older adults after DOPPO rehabilitation, baseline 10-m walking speed above 0.84 m/s predicted reaching 300 m in 6 min, the ambulatory discharge goal. PT OT Cohort 2018 Cognitive function impacts gait, functional mobility and falls in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome. Gait & posture In men and women with FXTAS, slower processing speed and poorer attention were linked to shorter strides, slower turning, and more falls in the past year. These cognitive deficits may help identify patients at higher risk of falling. PT OT Other 2018 Effects of a progressive walking program on the risk of developing locomotive syndrome in elderly Japanese people: a single-arm trial. Journal of physical therapy science In 24 untrained older adults, a 4-month progressive walking program improved two-step test scores and self-reported locomotive syndrome risk, but stand-up scores did not change. Without a control group, this cannot prove the program caused the improvements. OT Survey 2018 They Don't Care About Us! Care Personnel's Perspectives on Ambient Assisted Living Technology Usage: Scenario-Based Survey Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Care staff imagined an ambient assisted living system and mostly accepted emergency-related monitoring, but rejected cameras, microphones, and routine monitoring. Disabled people’s care staff were least accepting. OT Other 2018 Relationship between frontal assessment battery scores and activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living ability in older adults. Journal of physical therapy science Higher FAB scores were strongly related to higher ADL/IADL functional age in 85 Japanese older adults. Mean FAB score was 9.1 points and mean functional age was 6.3 years, but this is association, not proof. PT OT Other 2018 Effects of promoting daily physical activity on physical and mental health in older individuals. Journal of physical therapy science Physical fitness did not improve more than control. With accelerometer-based nurse counselling, tailored step goals, and health seminars, older adults increased average daily steps, vitality, and social functioning; control also wore accelerometers, received seminars, and increased steps. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2019 What factors affect clinical decision-making about access to stroke rehabilitation? A systematic review. Clinical rehabilitation Clinicians deciding stroke rehabilitation access weighed age, dementia, pre and poststroke function, social support, motivation, expected discharge, bed shortages, and their own knowledge or gut instinct. No service reported using formal criteria. PT OT Other 2018 Manual wheelchair downhill stability: an analysis of factors affecting tip probability. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Bump height, speed, and rear axle position drove downhill wheelchair tipping in simulations. Lowering the seat and reclining the backrest favoured rolling over or stopping, but recline increased backward tipping risk. PT OT Other 2019 Exercise and Parkinson Disease: Comparing Tango, Treadmill, and Stretching. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT Treadmill walking improved forward and backward gait speed more than stretching or tango, but none of the changes across the three groups were large enough to be clinically meaningful for people with Parkinson disease. PT OT Other 2018 Differences in body awareness and its effects on balance function and independence in activities of daily living for stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Stroke survivors with lower fall risk and less need for daily assistance reported higher body awareness. The study did not show that improving body awareness caused these differences. PT OT Cohort 2019 Falls resulting in health care among older people with intellectual disability in comparison with the general population. Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR Older people with intellectual disability had more fall-related health care contacts than matched peers, especially at institutions and during daily activities like eating or hygiene. They sustained more head, hip, and leg injuries, required longer hospital stays, and were readmitted more often. PT OT SLP Meta-Analysis 2019 Goal-setting in geriatric rehabilitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Clinical rehabilitation Goal-setting did not improve physical functioning, quality of life, or reduce rehabilitation duration in older adults compared to usual care. The evidence was low quality, and usual care often already included some form of goal-setting, making it hard to see a benefit from standardized methods. PT OT Narrative Review 2019 Mobility related physical and functional losses due to aging and disease - a motivation for lower limb exoskeletons. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Aging and disease reduce lower limb strength, power, walking speed, endurance and daily steps, while falls rise. Exoskeletons are proposed to assist or train mobility, not shown to work. PT OT Other 2019 Comparison of range of motion during movement from supine to sitting position in healthy young and elderly participants. Journal of physical therapy science Healthy elderly participants had larger shoulder extension and elbow flexion angles and reached the measured joint angles earlier when getting up from lying, compared with healthy young participants. OT Survey 2018 Assessing subtypes of restricted and repetitive behaviour using the Adult Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire-2 in autistic adults. Molecular autism In autistic adults, the RBQ-2A questionnaire sorted repetitive behaviours into two clusters: insistence on sameness and repetitive sensory/motor behaviours. Repetitive sensory/motor behaviours were lower in adults aged 50 to 66, while gender did not differ. PT OT Other 2019 A postural unloading task to assess fast corrective responses in the upper limb following stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A robotic arm test that removes a background load gave steadier results in healthy people and identified more stroke-related arm control problems than a test that adds a load, especially trouble slowing the arm. PT OT Survey 2019 Global Consensus From Clinicians Regarding Low Back Pain Outcome Indicators for Older Adults: Pairwise Wiki Survey Using Crowdsourcing. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Clinicians ranked returning to 80% of prior daily activities, independent walking, and grocery shopping as the most important low back pain outcomes for older adults. Pain scores and straight-leg raise ranked low. PT OT Cohort 2019 Impact of heart failure on functional recovery after hip fracture. Journal of physical therapy science Hip fracture patients with heart failure gained 34.1% of possible daily-living score improvement, versus 51.6% without heart failure, after adjusting for age, gender and pre-fracture walking. They were also less likely to return to the same residence. PT OT Systematic Review 2019 Utility of Functional Metrics Assessed During Acute Care on Hospital Outcomes: A Systematic Review. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation In acute care, higher function on measures such as the Barthel Index or FIM was linked with shorter stays, lower mortality, discharge home more often, and better recovery. These are predictors, not proof that measuring function improves outcomes. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Comorbid Conditions Among Adults 50 Years and Older With Traumatic Brain Injury: Examining Associations With Demographics, Healthcare Utilization, Institutionalization, and 1-Year Outcomes. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation Older adults with TBI and acute hospital complications had longer stays and higher rehospitalization rates. Those with chronic disease burdens also faced higher rehospitalization risks. Substance abuse clusters were linked to institutionalization but not 1-year functional outcomes. These patterns highlight distinct risk profiles for discharge planning. PT OT Cohort 2019 The Association Between Social Engagement, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Falls Among Older Primary Care Patients. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Mild cognitive impairment was linked to more prior-year falls in 430 older primary care patients at risk of mobility decline. Higher social engagement was linked to fewer falls, and among those with high engagement, MCI was not linked to falls. These are associations. PT OT Survey 2019 Late life disability and experienced wellbeing: Are economic resources a buffer? Disability and health journal Older adults whose impairments interfered more with regular activities reported lower emotional wellbeing during daily tasks. Middle income softened this link. Wealth did not buffer it, and higher wealth was tied to lower wellbeing. PT OT Survey 2019 Physical activity patterns and multimorbidity burden of older adults with different levels of functional status: NHANES 2003-2006. Disability and health journal Older adults with activity limitations or difficulty with daily tasks moved less and spent more time sedentary than high-functioning peers. Their activity rose later and peaked lower, especially in morning and midday, when differences were largest. PT OT Systematic Review 2019 Effects of Dopamine on Motor Recovery and Training in Adults and Children With Nonprogressive Neurological Injuries: A Systematic Review. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Evidence for dopamine medication was mixed. Some levodopa stroke studies showed motor improvement, but evidence for traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injury was weak. PT OT Other 2019 A path analysis of the interdependent relationships between life space assessment scores and relevant factors in an elderly Japanese community. Journal of physical therapy science In 212 Japanese older adults, age, lower muscle mass, more fear of falling, and slower Timed Up and Go were directly linked to narrower life-space mobility. Cognition and chair-stand time appeared only through other factors. ← Previous PAGE 10 OF 24 Next →
