PT OT RCT 2018 Music meets robotics: a prospective randomized study on motivation during robot aided therapy. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Letting 16 healthy people choose and combine sounds in a robot arm game made the task more enjoyable and self-directed than following left/right commands. Removing the screen did not change motivation. This was not stroke patients. PT OT Case Report 2018 Effects of manual therapy with functional electrical stimulation on scoliosis curve in children with cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science Two non-ambulatory children with cerebral palsy received manual therapy and electrical stimulation for three months. Both showed reduced spinal curvature and higher caregiver-reported quality of life scores. This small number of cases cannot prove the treatment works. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Executive function in school-aged children with cerebral palsy: Relationship with speech and language. Research in developmental disabilities Children with cerebral palsy showed elevated executive function difficulties regardless of their speech and language abilities. Parents reported significantly higher problem behaviors than expected in typical children. Clinicians should screen for executive function issues in all patients, even those with strong communication skills. PT Cohort 2018 Long-term physical and mental health outcomes associated with traumatic brain injury severity in post-9/11 veterans: A retrospective cohort study. Brain injury Veterans with moderate/severe TBI still reported worse somatization, PTSD, and depression after accounting for other factors. Mild TBI mostly did not. Overall health and current pain were not different after adjustment. PT OT RCT 2018 Effects of shoulder strapping in patients with stroke: A randomised control trial. The South African journal of physiotherapy Shoulder strapping did not significantly improve pain, subluxation, tone, or motor function compared to standard care. While some non-significant trends favoured longitudinal strapping, the trial found no statistical evidence that either strapping technique changes clinical outcomes in stroke patients. PT Survey 2018 Perceived readiness for hospital discharge: Patients with spinal cord injury versus physiotherapists. The South African journal of physiotherapy Overall discharge readiness was similar between patients and physiotherapists. Patients rated coping and expected home support higher, while physiotherapists rated patients as more stressed and rated knowledge items differently. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2018 Adoption of Stroke Rehabilitation Technologies by the User Community: Qualitative Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Stakeholders agreed 10 priorities for stroke rehabilitation technology and 3 steps to improve adoption: an annual exhibition, a stakeholder network, and a consumer rater website. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2018 Designing robot-assisted neurorehabilitation strategies for people with both HIV and stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation People with both HIV and stroke face overlapping cognitive and motor deficits that current assessments often miss. Robot-assisted systems offer a way to quantify these joint impairments and deliver consistent care in low-resource settings, though no specific protocol is yet proven. PT Systematic Review 2018 The efficacy of kinesiology taping for improving gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy: A systematic review. The South African journal of physiotherapy In children with cerebral palsy, adding trunk kinesiology taping to physiotherapy improved sitting gross motor function in pooled trials, but standing results were inconsistent and the trials were small, unblinded and not concealed. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 The role of biopsychosocial factors in the rehabilitation process of individuals with a stroke. Work (Reading, Mass.) Patients who started rehab more than 16 weeks after stroke, had no family care support, or were single or widowed showed significantly less improvement in mobility and daily activities. Depression and low self-efficacy at admission also predicted poor outcomes. Younger age under 55 was unexpectedly linked to lower efficacy. PT OT Other 2018 Clinical assessment of balance using BBS and SARAbal in cerebellar ataxia: Synthesis of findings of a psychometric property analysis. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao The Berg Balance Scale and SARA balance sub-score are free, take 15-20 minutes, and accurately separate patients who use walking aids from those who do not. Cut-offs of less than 44 on the Berg or more than 5 on the SARA identify aid users with high accuracy. PT Other 2018 Dynamic Balance Is Related to Physiological Impairments in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation People with MS who had recently fallen repeatedly had worse foot vibration sense, longer balance reaction delays, more spasticity, and higher pyramidal and cerebellar signs than non-fallers. It does not show that treating these signs reduces falls. PT OT Systematic Review 2019 Racial and ethnic disparities in stroke outcomes: a scoping review of post-stroke disability assessment tools. Disability and rehabilitation Post-stroke disability research used many different outcome measures, and most appeared in only one study. The studies often did not show that measures work equally well across racial and ethnic groups. Only one study examined American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander groups. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Cluster Analysis of Vulnerable Groups in Acute Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In acute traumatic brain injury rehab, 148 patients formed four vulnerability clusters. Clusters differed in length of stay and functional independence gains, and elderly medically complex patients were the oldest cluster. PT OT Other 2018 Comparison of Self-Report Versus Sensor-Based Methods for Measuring the Amount of Upper Limb Activity Outside the Clinic. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Self-reported and sensor-measured upper limb use correlate moderately but disagree frequently. Only five participants were consistently accurate. Therapists should not assume a patient's report of arm use matches objective data, nor use the two measures interchangeably. PT OT Cohort 2018 Discharge Patterns for Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients Going From Acute Care Hospitals to Inpatient and Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Across 122,084 Medicare patients, discharge to intensive rehabilitation versus skilled nursing varied widely by hospital, not just by stroke severity. Patients sent to skilled nursing were older, female, and had more comorbidities and lower function. Hospital-level patterns drove these decisions more than clinical factors alone. PT OT Narrative Review 2018 Evaluation of Performance-Based Outcome Measures for the Upper Limb: A Comprehensive Narrative Review. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Most upper-limb performance tests used for amputees and stroke patients assess one-hand tasks in front of the body, rely on subjective judgments, and rarely capture sensation or movement quality. Few cover all movement zones or two-handed daily use. PT OT Cohort 2018 Epidemiology of hip fracture in nursing home residents with multiple sclerosis. Disability and health journal Nursing home residents with multiple sclerosis had lower hip fracture rates than matched residents without MS, except in residents requiring extensive or total transfer assistance. Within MS, wandering, low BMI, antidepressants and opioids were linked to higher fracture risk. PT OT Pilot 2018 Can telerehabilitation games lead to functional improvement of upper extremities in individuals with Parkinson's disease? International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Parkinson's patients who played a home 'Fruit Picking' game for three weeks wrote letters and moved light objects faster, and scored better on hand dexterity and motor exams. No control group was used, so these gains cannot be separated from time or other factors. PT RCT 2018 Effect of Wheelchair Stroke Pattern on Upper Extremity Muscle Fatigue. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation In 18 AB men, 10 minutes of wheelchair propulsion with either the SC or P stroke produced no clear difference in arm strength after propulsion or perceived effort. A possible link between shorter distal upper extremity length and less shoulder fatigue needs future testing. PT Cohort 2018 Associations Between Muscle Synergies and Treatment Outcomes in Cerebral Palsy Are Robust Across Clinical Centers. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In children with cerebral palsy, a score from muscle signals before treatment was linked to better gait and walking speed after treatment across clinical centers. Higher scores pointed to better outcomes. PT OT Survey 2018 Development and Psychometric Evaluation of a Fatigability Index for Full-Time Wheelchair Users With Spinal Cord Injury. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Full-time wheelchair users with spinal cord injury reported physical and mental fatigue across many activities. The new physical and mental scales each behaved mainly as one overall score, but they were tested in a self-selected sample and are not proof of treatment benefit. PT OT Pilot 2018 Preliminary findings of altered functional connectivity of the default mode network linked to functional outcomes one year after pediatric traumatic brain injury. Developmental neurorehabilitation One year after mild to moderate brain injury, children showed altered brain network connections associated with poorer complex motor inhibition. Basic motor speed and simple inhibition were not related. This is preliminary evidence from 11 injured and 11 uninjured children. PT OT Cohort 2019 Psychosocial Comorbidities Related to Return to Work Rates Following Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Journal of occupational rehabilitation Older age and higher depression or anxiety scores predicted failure to return to work after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. State anxiety at three months was linked to not returning to work at twelve months. Screen for both mood and anxiety disorders to identify patients needing support. PT OT Other 2018 Hand-Use-at-Home Questionnaire: validity and reliability in children with neonatal brachial plexus palsy or unilateral cerebral palsy. Clinical rehabilitation Parents can use the Hand-Use-at-Home questionnaire to report how often a child with one weak arm spontaneously uses it at home. Scores were stable over two to four weeks and related to severity, but ability alone did not fully predict use. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Participation in Daily Life: Influence on Quality of Life in Ambulatory Children with Cerebral Palsy. PM & R : the journal of injury, function, and rehabilitation Higher overall participation linked to better psychosocial and total quality of life in children with cerebral palsy. However, simply doing activities more often correlated with lower quality of life scores. Satisfaction with participation did not predict quality of life. PT Cohort 2018 Mobility Analysis of AmpuTees II: Comorbidities and Mobility in Lower Limb Prosthesis Users. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation In lower limb prosthesis users, age, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and anxiety or panic disorders were linked to lower mobility. When other linked conditions were taken into account, vascular disease and age differences were smaller than a clinically important change. PT Other 2018 Visual dependence affects postural sway responses to continuous visual field motion in individuals with cerebral palsy. Developmental neurorehabilitation Adults with spastic cerebral palsy who were visually dependent swayed more in the direction of a moving virtual scene than visually independent adults with cerebral palsy or typical development. Their visual dependence also appeared linked to impaired vestibulo-ocular reflex. PT OT SLP Case Report 2019 Intrathecal baclofen in metachromatic leukodystrophy. Developmental medicine and child neurology Ten non-walking children with metachromatic leukodystrophy received intrathecal baclofen. Doses increased steadily over six months as the disease progressed. Families reported clear improvements in comfort and daily care, though no standardized outcome measures were used. PT OT Other 2019 Understanding Health-Related Quality of Life in Caregivers of Civilians and Service Members/Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury: Establishing the Reliability and Validity of PROMIS Fatigue and Sleep Disturbance Item Banks. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation The PROMIS Fatigue and Sleep Disturbance tests are reliable and valid for caregivers of people with traumatic brain injury. They take under a minute to complete and accurately distinguish caregivers of high-functioning patients from those of low-functioning patients. PT RCT 2019 Short-burst interval treadmill training walking capacity and performance in cerebral palsy: a pilot study. Developmental neurorehabilitation After 20 short-burst treadmill sessions, 12 children with cerebral palsy walked faster and more in daily life, with gains partly kept at 6 weeks. No control group means the training effect is uncertain. PT RCT 2018 ADSTEP: Preliminary Investigation of a Multicomponent Walking Aid Program in People With Multiple Sclerosis. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In people with MS using walking aids, the ADSTEP program of selection, fitting and task-oriented training produced fewer fallers than usual medical care and reduced sitting time. It did not reduce total falls or improve walking tests or patient-reported outcomes. Components cannot be separated. PT OT SLP Other 2018 Quality of life and psychological well-being in the early stages of multiple sclerosis (MS): Importance of adopting a biopsychosocial model. Disability and health journal In newly diagnosed MS, anxiety and locus of control predicted 40% of quality of life variance, outweighing disease symptoms. Clinicians should assess coping and perceived control early, not just physical disability. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Improvement During Inpatient Rehabilitation Among Older Adults With Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, and Stroke. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Older adults with Guillain-Barré, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, or stroke all improved in self-care, mobility, and cognition during inpatient rehabilitation. Patients with Guillain-Barré showed the largest gains, followed by stroke, while those with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease made more modest but still meaningful progress. PT OT SLP Other 2019 Understanding Health-Related Quality of Life of Caregivers of Civilians and Service Members/Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury: Establishing the Reliability and Validity of PROMIS Social Health Measures. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation PROMIS social health measures provide reliable, rapid scores for caregivers of people with TBI. They accurately distinguish caregivers of those with low functional ability, who report significantly worse social health than the general population, enabling targeted support. PT RCT 2019 The Effects of M2M and Adapted Yoga on Physical and Psychosocial Outcomes in People With Multiple Sclerosis. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Movement-to-music improved walking speed and endurance versus waitlist, but adapted yoga did not. Neither intervention met the minimal clinically important difference, and lower-extremity strength, fatigue, and pain did not significantly change. PT Cohort 2019 Age-related trends in cardiometabolic disease among adults with cerebral palsy. Developmental medicine and child neurology Over at least 3 years, middle-aged and older adults with cerebral palsy were diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, abnormal heart rhythm and atherosclerosis sooner than younger adults. High cholesterol and hypertension were most common. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2018 Repetitive Peripheral Sensory Stimulation and Upper Limb Performance in Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Repetitive peripheral sensory stimulation, usually paired with motor training, was associated with upper limb motor gains in chronic stroke in small pooled trials, but participants likely knew they received active treatment. The two-hour protocol may be hard to use. PT Pilot 2018 A Dual-Learning Paradigm Simultaneously Improves Multiple Features of Gait Post-Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair A dual treadmill task raised paretic knee flexion by about 10 degrees during training in 12 people with stroke, but the gain did not carry over after feedback was removed. Step asymmetry changed during training but returned to baseline; hip flexion showed a small carryover. PT RCT 2019 Complete Restoration of Respiratory Muscle Function in Three Subjects With Spinal Cord Injury: Pilot Interventional Clinical Trial. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation Three cervical spinal cord injury patients using diaphragm pacing reported easier secretion clearance after added spinal cord stimulation, and measured cough airflow and pressure increased. This is a three-person pilot, not proof of broad benefit. PT Qualitative 2018 Balance exercise facilitates everyday life for people with multiple sclerosis: A qualitative study. Physiotherapy research international : the journal for researchers and clinicians in physical therapy People with MS described the CoDuSe balance programme as helping them notice and use core muscles automatically, feel steadier, manage daily tasks more easily, and gain confidence. They also reported fewer falls. These are experiences, not proof the programme works. PT Pilot 2018 Mobility Function and Recovery After Stroke: Preliminary Insights From Sympathetic Nervous System Activity. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT Skin conductance rose during harder walking tasks in adults after stroke, and fell after 12 weeks of gait coordination, balance, and strength training. It was not linked to gait measures. The small uncontrolled study cannot show which part caused the change. PT OT Other 2018 Motor Impairment-Related Alterations in Biceps and Triceps Brachii Fascicle Lengths in Chronic Hemiparetic Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair In 11 people with chronic stroke, biceps and triceps muscle bundles in the paretic arm were shorter than the other arm at rest. More severe arm impairment was linked to greater relative shortening of the biceps than the triceps. PT OT SLP Case Series 2018 Feasibility of Aerobic Exercise in the Subacute Phase of Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Series. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT Five patients with moderate-to-severe brain injury tolerated adding aerobic exercise to their rehabilitation. They attended sessions consistently, but most failed to reach the target heart rate zone, and self-reported effort did not match heart rate data. PT Pilot 2018 Feasibility of single session high-intensity interval training utilizing speed and active recovery to push beyond standard practice post-stroke. Topics in stroke rehabilitation In a single session, 21 chronic stroke survivors safely walked 142% faster on a treadmill than their overground speed. This proves high-intensity interval training is feasible acutely, but does not show it improves walking. PT OT RCT 2019 Clinical study of combined mirror and extracorporeal shock wave therapy on upper limb spasticity in poststroke patients. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation For poststroke upper limb spasticity, adding mirror therapy and shock wave therapy to usual rehabilitation showed better arm movement and lower tone scores than adding either one alone or usual rehabilitation alone. PT OT SLP Pilot 2018 The difficulty of studying race-ethnic stroke rehabilitation disparities in a community. Topics in stroke rehabilitation Community stroke rehabilitation data collection across physical, occupational and speech therapy venues was feasible to set up, but only 13 of 63 partners used the forms and 20 of 48 patients contributed data. This pilot cannot yet answer disparity questions. PT Other 2018 Correlation between the Gait Deviation Index and skeletal muscle mass in children with spastic cerebral palsy. Journal of physical therapy science In ambulatory children with spastic cerebral palsy, worse Gait Deviation Index scores were linked to lower limb muscle mass index and slower chair stand time. Grip strength and upper limb muscle mass index were not linked. PT Other 2018 Study on the design development of a multi joint ankle foot orthosis. Journal of physical therapy science In ten stroke patients, the Klenzak multi-joint AFO showed faster walking and higher Berg balance scores than a conventional AFO. The study was very small and the authors say the results cannot be applied to all stroke patients. PT OT SLP Cohort 2018 Course of Social Participation in the First 2 Years After Stroke and Its Associations With Demographic and Stroke-Related Factors. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Social participation did not simply improve after stroke. People increased work and household hours over two years while social and leisure activity decreased, and restrictions eased mostly in the first year. Older, lower-educated, and ADL-dependent patients showed worse courses. ← Previous PAGE 14 OF 78 Next →
