PT Qualitative 2025 Exploring the experience of cardiothoracic ICU clinicians during the COVID-19 pandemic: A grounded theory study. Nursing in critical care Clinicians in a non-COVID ICU said visiting restrictions made them feel like barriers to families, causing guilt, distress and repeated experiences that felt morally wrong. Some said there was no psychological support strategy in place. This describes staff experience, not patient outcomes. PT OT SLP RN RCT 2024 Serum Albumin Level at Intensive Care Unit Admission and Delirium Duration and Severity in Critically Ill Adults. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Low albumin at ICU admission did not predict how long delirium lasted or how severe it was in adults with delirium. However, patients with low albumin stayed in the hospital and ICU longer and were less likely to be discharged alive. PT OT SLP RN Systematic Review 2025 Non-pharmacological interventions to support the cognitive rehabilitation of patients admitted to the intensive care unit: An umbrella review. Nursing in critical care No definitive conclusion can be drawn about non-pharmacological cognitive rehabilitation for ICU patients. Interventions are described as personalized and multicomponent, but evidence is too limited to show which ones work. PT OT RN Cohort 2024 Emotional Distress in Younger (<55 Years) and Older (≥55) Patients After a First-Time Myocardial Infarction and Its Prospective Associations With Working Status and Secondary Preventive Goals Among the Younger Cohort: Insights From the Swedish SWEDEHEART Registry Study. The Journal of cardiovascular nursing Younger patients after a first MI reported emotional distress more often than older patients. Among younger patients, early emotional distress was linked to less work and poorer achievement of smoking and physical activity goals later, but not cholesterol or blood pressure goals. PT RN Meta-Analysis 2025 Do Extended Reality Interventions Benefit Patients Undergoing Elective Cardiac Surgical and Interventional Procedures? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Journal of clinical nursing VR did not reduce pain during or after cardiac procedures. It lowered anxiety before procedures and during TAVI, and improved knowledge and physical function in small studies, but evidence is low. PT RN Other 2025 Pain management in hospitalized infants: recommendations for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Revista brasileira de enfermagem All infants in a Brazilian NICU had painful procedures, but none were assessed with a pain scale, only 13.7% had documented pain, and only 2.8% were reassessed. Breastfeeding and skin-to-skin care were common documented interventions. PT RN Systematic Review 2025 Alternative Models of Cardiac Rehabilitation to Promote Secondary Prevention in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Scoping Review. The Journal of cardiovascular nursing Home-based cardiac rehab after PCI used phone calls, websites, apps, devices, and education. Across 23 studies, patients often engaged and reported satisfaction, but the review did not compare models or show which works. PT RN Meta-Analysis 2025 Nurse-involved early mobilization in the intensive care unit: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Nursing in critical care Nurse-involved ICU early mobilization did not show a clear improvement in muscle strength. It was linked with shorter ICU stays, but the studies varied in how nurses and other staff shared the work. PT Qualitative 2025 Exploring clinical rehabilitation practices for bronchopulmonary dysplasia in neonatal intensive care unit: A qualitative study. Nursing in critical care NICU clinicians reported BPD rehabilitation was often late, brief, and uncoordinated, with parents rarely involved and inadequate space, equipment, and follow-up. PT OT RN Cohort 2025 Changes in Mental and Physical Health Outcomes Following One Day a Week Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation in Regional New South Wales. The Australian journal of rural health In regional NSW, patients completing one weekly cardiopulmonary rehab session showed reduced depression, faster sit-to-stand times, and longer walking distances. Waist circumference decreased slightly. Blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation did not change significantly. PT RN Systematic Review 2025 Identifying barriers and enablers to cardiac rehabilitation participation and completion unique to South Asian individuals: a qualitative systematic review. European journal of cardiovascular nursing South Asian adults after cardiac referral described language barriers, fatalism, family duties and culturally insensitive programmes as barriers to participation. Interpreters, family support, prayer-friendly flexible classes and respectful staff were enablers. PT RN RCT 2025 Combined Effect of 12 Weeks Baduanjin and Tri-Ball Respiratory Training as a Home-Based Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Subjects With Moderate Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Multi-Center Randomized Controlled Trial. Rehabilitation nursing : the official journal of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses With continued inhaled budesonide/formoterol, 12-week home Baduanjin, Tri-Ball Breath training, or both increased 6-minute walk distance versus routine care. The paper does not show which component drives the combined result. PT RN RCT 2025 Effects of the hospital-community-family trinity cardiac rehabilitation on patients with acute myocardial infarction after percutaneous coronary intervention: A randomized trial. International journal of nursing sciences After heart attack and PCI, 110 patients in a 12-month hospital-community-family rehab program had better exercise endurance, heart function, and quality of life than routine care. PT RN Systematic Review 2025 The Effects of Interventions on Health-Related Quality of Life of People Living With Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review. Journal of clinical nursing Cardiac rehabilitation generally improved health-related quality of life in adults with cardiovascular disease, especially physical well-being. Mental health evidence was less consistent, and social benefits were rarely measured. PT RN Systematic Review 2025 Evidence of the use of the Perme Intensive Care Unit Mobility Score in hospitalized adults: a scoping review. Revista latino-americana de enfermagem The Perme ICU Mobility Score was used in 29 studies of 3,399 hospitalized adults, mostly in ICUs. It takes about 30 seconds, is scored 0 to 32, and higher scores were linked to home discharge, while lower initial scores were seen in patients who died. PT RN Systematic Review 2025 Effect of telemedicine on the quality of life of people with heart disease: a systematic review. Revista latino-americana de enfermagem Remote self-management care did not clearly improve quality of life across 44 heart-disease trials. 20 studies showed gains, 19 showed improvement without a clear advantage, and 5 showed none. No study found worse quality of life. PT OT RN Other 2025 Symptoms of long COVID in children and adolescents: a scoping review. Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da U S P Children and adolescents with long COVID commonly reported fatigue, headache, cough, sleep and mood problems, and poor concentration. Younger children had more cough and nasal symptoms; adolescents had more emotional, cognitive and pain symptoms. PT OT RN Meta-Analysis 2025 Efficacy and safety of exercise rehabilitation in the vulnerable phase in patients with acute decompensated heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis. International journal of nursing sciences Exercise rehabilitation in the first three months after discharge for acute heart failure improves walking distance, physical performance, and quality of life. It reduces all-cause readmissions by six months. However, it does not significantly improve heart pumping function, reduce heart failure-specific readmissions, or lower mortality rates. PT RN Meta-Analysis 2025 Non-Pharmacological Sleep Interventions after Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials. Journal of clinical nursing Non-drug sleep interventions after cardiac surgery improved patient-reported sleep quality, but sleep duration did not show a clear improvement. The evidence is low quality and very varied, so no single technique is proven best. PT OT SLP RN Other 2025 Palliative Home Care Based on Clinically Relevant Scientific Measures: A Cross-Sectional Study. The American journal of hospice & palliative care Patients with heart failure and dementia and their caregivers rated symptoms similarly, but caregivers reported more concern about pain and information needs. Higher patient symptom scores predicted worse heart health and greater caregiver burden. The practical problems item did not agree between pairs. PT OT RN Other 2026 Gender Differences in Disease Burden, Symptom Burden, and Quality of Life Among People Living With Heart Failure and Multimorbidity: Cross-Sectional Study. Journal of advanced nursing Older women with heart failure and multimorbidity reported higher disease burden, more pain, tiredness, nausea and lack of appetite, and worse quality of life than men. The study was cross-sectional, so it cannot explain causes or show what treatment helps. PT RN Other 2026 Associations Between Frailty, Family Functioning, and Quality of Life in Adolescents With Congenital Heart Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study. Journal of advanced nursing Adolescents with congenital heart disease who were frail or had moderate or severe family dysfunction reported lower quality of life. Frailty was especially linked to exhaustion and reduced activity in those with worse heart function. PT RCT 2025 Peer-Mentor Support for Older, Vulnerable Patients With Ischemic Heart Disease: A Mixed Methods Process-Outcome Evaluation. Journal of advanced nursing Peer mentors helped older, vulnerable IHD patients attend cardiac rehab, but the main trial showed no significant gains in anxiety, depression, quality of life, diet, self-efficacy, or activity. Interviews suggest mentors worked through encouragement and convenience. PT OT SLP Pilot 2026 The Use of Biased Language in the Care of Seriously Ill Children: A Pilot Study. The American journal of hospice & palliative care In 63 charts of seriously ill children, no demographic link was found to biased language. However, stigmatizing words appeared in 46% of records, often copied forward. Clinicians should replace subjective labels with objective descriptions of behavior or barriers. PT OT RN Cohort 2025 Adding Functional Ability Measures to a Mortality Algorithm to Support Palliative Care Eligibility Decisions. Research in gerontological nursing In older adults, receiving physical or occupational therapy was linked to lower odds of death, while needing help with daily activities or skilled nursing was linked to higher odds. These functional markers could help identify patients who need palliative care sooner. PT RN Cohort 2025 Predicting Post-ICU Functional Impairment During Early ICU Admission Using Real-world Electronic Health Record Data. Clinical nursing research Lower AMPAC, older age, reduced nurse-documented mobility, lower Braden, and prior walking device in the first 24 hours predicted functional impairment at discharge in adults with ICU sepsis. PT RCT 2025 Inspiratory Muscle Training in Adults With Cerebral Palsy: Long Term Effects: A Double-Blind Randomized, Controlled Trial. Research in nursing & health Eight weeks of inspiratory muscle training improved breathing muscle strength in adults with cerebral palsy, but gains faded by 12 weeks and were mostly gone by 24 weeks. Training at 40% of maximum inspiratory pressure held up better than 20%. PT OT RN Cohort 2026 How Often Are Hospitalised Children Physically Restrained During Painful and Stressful Procedures? Journal of clinical nursing Physical restraint was observed in 22.3% of 1210 procedures in stable hospitalised children, rising to 32.9% during painful ones. Restraint clustered on airway suctioning, tube insertion and nasal lavage, and was most likely in infants and children crying or in distress. PT OT RN Other 2026 A Realist Evaluation of the Implementation and Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Four Value-Based Healthcare Programmes. Journal of advanced nursing Heart Failure nurses used PROMs to triage and plan resources, but patients did not self-manage or share decisions. In Epilepsy, mood scores identified problems without services to act on them. PT OT RN RCT 2025 Pulmonary Rehabilitation Exercise Package for Enhancing Health in Elderly COPD Patients With Frailty: An Experimental Study. The journal of nursing research : JNR A 4-week pulmonary rehabilitation package significantly reduced shortness of breath and improved walking distance and leg strength in frail older adults with COPD compared to routine care. It also reduced frailty scores at one month. The intervention included breathing exercises, bed exercises, and education. PT RN Case Report 2026 Review of Perioperative Care in Elderly Patients With Esophageal Hiatal Hernia and Cardiopulmonary Disease. Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates An 86-year-old man with a large hiatal hernia and heart failure completed laparoscopic repair after multidisciplinary prehabilitation, monitoring, and infection care. He left hospital 11 days after surgery and had no symptoms at 3 and 6 months. PT RN RCT 2025 Experience of heart failure patients in mobilization with virtual reality: mixed methods study. Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da U S P Adding immersive virtual reality to early mobilization did not show a clear difference in the main breathing sensation outcome compared with mobilization alone. Patients in both groups rated the procedure positively. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2025 Family Functioning and Parent Behavioural Changes Post-Admission to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Single-Centre Cohort Study. Nursing in critical care Most families maintained healthy functioning after PICU discharge, but caregiver distress strongly predicted poor outcomes. Nurses should screen for caregiver PTSD and mental illness during follow-up, as these affect family cohesion more than the child's clinical severity. PT Qualitative 2025 Engagement in a digital health physical activity program, TPA4You, among older family care partners of persons with heart failure: A Scenario-based design. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Older family caregivers of people with heart failure saw a home-based Zoom, Fitbit, and text program as useful in concept, but said caregiving time, technology worries, and mixed reactions to messages were key barriers. PT OT Other 2025 Interprofessional Simulation-Based Training to Facilitate ABCDEF Bundle Implementation. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Sixteen ICU clinicians rated a 90-minute interprofessional simulation training as realistic and relevant. After training, more reported comfort with awakening trials, non-pharmacologic agitation management, and team mobilization of ventilated patients. PT RN Other 2025 Frailty and mobility in hospitalized older adults: an analytical cross sectional study. Revista brasileira de enfermagem Frail hospitalized older adults had much lower mobility than non-frail and prefrail patients. Prefrail and non-frail patients did not differ. This association was measured at admission, so it cannot show frailty caused the mobility loss. PT OT RN Cohort 2025 Community Cardiac Rehabilitation Program: Lessons Learned for Long-Term Outcomes. Worldviews on evidence-based nursing Six months after cardiac rehabilitation, patients continued to improve walking distance and kept waist size down, but blood pressure, weight, BMI, depression, physical activity and medication adherence worsened. Diet and smoking gains held. PT RN RCT 2025 The Effects of a Technology-Assisted Hybrid Cardiac Rehabilitation (TecHCR) Program for Adults With Coronary Heart Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Worldviews on evidence-based nursing A nurse-led hybrid cardiac rehab program improved exercise self-efficacy more than center-based rehab at 12 and 24 weeks. It also improved health-promoting behaviors and anxiety, but not exercise capacity, depression, or cardiovascular risk factors. PT SLP RN Cohort 2025 Maternal Racial Differences and Socioeconomic Status in Preterm Infant Neurodevelopment, Feeding, and Growth. Nursing research Preterm infants born to Black mothers had lower birth weight, younger gestational age, and higher neonatal risk scores; ZIP-code poverty, family size, and income were also linked with neurodevelopment, feeding, and growth outcomes. PT Qualitative 2026 Clinicians' perspectives of pain in older adults with heart failure. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Heart failure clinicians often used a 1-10 pain scale, while some focused on chest discomfort and said older adults under-report pain or blame arthritis. They rarely mentioned physical therapy and wanted heart failure-specific tools, resources, and user-friendly apps. PT OT RN Qualitative 2026 Lived Experience of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Survivors: A Phenomenological Study. Nursing in critical care Some ECMO survivors described lasting weakness, trouble walking, emotional distress and financial burden. Participants wanted clearer rehabilitation advice, and some wanted simpler follow-up and regular contact. PT RN Other 2026 Is a Hybrid Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme Feasible and Effective in Individuals With COPD After an Exacerbation-Related Hospitalisation: A Mixed Methods Study. Journal of clinical nursing 21 patients who completed a hybrid home pulmonary rehabilitation programme rated it 95/100 and reported improvements in exercise, symptoms, anxiety and depression. These are before-and-after feasibility findings, not proof it works. PT RN Qualitative 2026 Surviving a Critical Care Admission for COVID-19: A Qualitative Study of Experiences and Unmet Needs During the Recovery Period. Nursing in critical care Fifteen COVID-19 ICU survivors said they often did not feel as unwell as they were, then found recovery confusing and support too late. They wanted clear explanations, early practical help, and consistent follow-up. PT RN RCT 2026 Effectiveness of a digital technology-assisted personalized exercise prescription in the telerehabilitation of postoperative coronary heart disease patients: A randomized controlled trial. International journal of nursing sciences Peak oxygen uptake did not improve more with the digital personalized home rehabilitation program than usual care in low-risk patients after coronary intervention. Submaximal endurance, exercise duration, and some quality-of-life scores showed secondary benefits. PT RN Cohort 2026 Unique contributions of heart failure and chronic pain on physical function and quality of life in older adults. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) After accounting for age, sex, race, comorbidities, depression and fatigue, heart failure alone was not associated with higher chronic pain prevalence. Older adults with both heart failure and chronic pain had worse quality of life and physical function than those with either or neither. PT Qualitative 2026 ICU Nurses' Perceptions of Family-Inclusive Outdoor Excursions: Enhancing Family Engagement and Humanisation in Intensive Care. Nursing in critical care Seven ICU nurses perceived family-inclusive outdoor excursions as helping patients recover, calming families and seeing patients as people, but these were their perceptions, not measured outcomes. PT OT RN Systematic Review 2026 Experiences of Individuals With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Their Caregivers During the Pandemic: A Systematic Review. Nursing open COPD patients and caregivers described pandemic fear, anxiety and loneliness, plus reduced activity. Some managed exacerbations at home. Telemedicine helped some, but others wanted face-to-face care. PT OT RN Systematic Review 2026 Re-Engaging in Activities of Daily Living After Critical Illness: A Qualitative Review. Journal of clinical nursing Critical illness survivors described daily activity recovery as dominated by persistent weakness, fatigue, and memory problems, forcing home adaptations and family help that often felt burdensome. These barriers can persist for months or years. PT RN Meta-Analysis 2026 Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Cough in Patients With Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Journal of clinical nursing Non-drug treatments were associated with lower cough severity in lung cancer patients, especially pulmonary rehabilitation, but the evidence was very low certainty and most trials were high risk of bias. PT OT RN RCT 2026 From Intensive Care to Recovery: Feasibility of a Randomised Controlled Study Design Evaluating a Cognitive Rehabilitation Intervention for Critically Ill Patients. Nursing in critical care 83 ICU patients were randomised to usual care or cognitive rehabilitation, but only 33 completed 6-month follow-up. This tested trial procedures, not whether mindfulness or brain training improves recovery. ← Previous PAGE 4 OF 21 Next →
