PT Qualitative 2021 A multisite study of multidisciplinary ICU team member beliefs toward early mobility. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care ICU staff believed early mobility helped patients but feared falls, line dislodgement and instability. Nurses were seen as both key initiators and blockers, while staffing, equipment and time shaped whether mobilization happened. PT OT RN Qualitative 2021 Parents' experiences of VOICE: A novel support programme in the NICU. Nursing in critical care Parents of extreme premature infants described structured NICU meetings as helping them feel involved in care, understand their baby's cues, and gain confidence as parents. They valued personalized information and emotional support. PT RN Cohort 2021 Translation and evaluation of a comprehensive educational program for cardiac rehabilitation patients in Latin America: A multi-national, longitudinal study. Patient education and counseling In three Latin American cardiac rehabilitation programs, Spanish Cardiac College education with supervised exercise and home exercise prescription increased knowledge from 13.64 to 15.38 of 20 points, held at 6 months. No control group, so the contribution of education cannot be separated from exercise. PT RN Cohort 2021 Effects of the Intensity of Lifestyle Exercise on Changes in Blood Pressure. Western journal of nursing research In older adults after a cardiac event, spending less time exercising at target heart rate zone was associated with a greater rise in systolic blood pressure over a year. No such link was found for diastolic pressure, and average blood pressure rose. PT OT Cohort 2020 Executive Function, Dexterity, and Discharge Disposition in Older Intensive Care Unit Survivors. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses In older ICU survivors, worse attention and task switching were linked to worse hand dexterity. Those discharged to a facility had lower dexterity and task-switching scores than those discharged home. PT Qualitative 2021 Standardisation, multi-measure, data quality and trending: A qualitative study on multidisciplinary perspectives to improve intensive care early mobility monitoring. Intensive & critical care nursing ICU clinicians want early mobility monitoring that is standardised, combines quantitative and qualitative data, and trends over time without data overload. PTs highlighted assistance, cuing, and movement quality. PT RCT 2021 The Cardiac Care Bridge randomized trial in high-risk older cardiac patients: A mixed-methods process evaluation. Journal of advanced nursing A nurse-coordinated cardiac transition programme did not show a significant difference in 6-month readmission or mortality, and only 67% of intended care was delivered. PT RN Other 2020 Factors Influencing the Impact of Depressive Symptoms on Physical Functional Capacity After Cardiac Rehabilitation. Rehabilitation nursing : the official journal of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses After completing cardiac rehab, higher depressive symptoms were linked to lower physical function. Spending more exercise time in the target heart rate zone reduced this link. Higher family support for exercise was linked to a stronger negative association. PT Cohort 2021 Cardiac rehabilitation in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: Predictors of utilization and effects of exercise training. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Among Takotsubo patients who attended outpatient cardiac rehab, exercise capacity increased by 1.3 METs, but weight did not change. Only 13.6% of nearby eligible patients enrolled, and inpatient rehab evaluation strongly predicted attendance. PT RN Meta-Analysis 2021 Effects of high-intensity interval training in patients with coronary artery disease after percutaneous coronary intervention: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Nursing open Supervised high-intensity interval training after PCI did not change heart rate, LDL, or triglycerides, but it raised peak oxygen uptake and reduced late luminal loss in 6 small trials. PT RN RCT Sleep and Activity Patterns Are Altered During Early Critical Illness in Mechanically Ventilated Adults. Dimensions of critical care nursing : DCCN Mechanically ventilated ICU adults spent 6.6 hours asleep at night, but daytime activity was only 66.5% of 24-hour activity and most hourly counts fell below resting thresholds. Nighttime movement and low daytime activity point to disrupted sleep-wake patterns. PT OT RN Other 2021 Daytime activity and sleep are associated with motor function in older intensive care unit survivors. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Older ICU survivors with less daytime activity had weaker grip and slower pegboard dexterity; more daytime sleep/rest was also linked to worse grip and dexterity. These are associations, not proof that changing activity or sleep improves function. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2021 Appropriateness of Long-Term Acute Care Hospital Transfer: A Multicenter Study of Medicare ACO Beneficiaries. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Only 31.4% of LTACH transfers were clinically appropriate. Most inappropriate transfers involved wound care or IV infusions manageable in skilled nursing facilities. Current Medicare payment criteria poorly distinguish appropriate cases, though stricter ICU stay requirements improve identification. PT RN Qualitative 2021 The course of readmission in frail older cardiac patients. Journal of advanced nursing Across five older cardiac patients readmitted after discharge support, visiting nurses and physical therapists had not seen the deterioration in three cases. Infrequent visits and incomplete records limited detection, and rehabilitation goals sometimes did not match patient expectations. PT OT RN Other 2021 Back pain and heart failure in community-dwelling older adults: Findings from the Health ABC study. Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) Older adults with back pain reported more falls, worse function, depression and fatigue. Women with heart failure were more likely to report back pain; cognition did not differ. PT Narrative Review 2021 Traditional Chinese exercise potential role as prevention and adjuvant therapy in patients with COVID-19. Complementary therapies in clinical practice This review proposes traditional Chinese exercise as a possible prevention or adjuvant therapy for healthy people, mild or moderate cases, and convalescence. It admits there is less direct medical evidence for preventing or treating COVID-19. PT OT SLP RCT 2021 Patients' Adaptations After Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Qualitative Study. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Many ARDS survivors used assistive devices, family help, and self-directed exercise, but most still had unresolved problems. Few sought more therapy after services ended, so ask what they are already trying. PT OT RN Cohort 2021 Predicting Mortality Risk in Older Hospitalized Persons With COVID-19: A Comparison of the COVID-19 Mortality Risk Score with Frailty and Disability. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Adding pre-admission disability and frailty scores to a standard COVID-19 mortality risk score improved prediction accuracy for older hospitalized patients. Functional status two weeks before admission was independently associated with survival, suggesting these factors should be routinely assessed. PT Cohort 2021 Retrospective analysis of exercise capacity in patients with coronary artery disease after percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft. International journal of nursing sciences Almost all patients after coronary bypass or stent had reduced exercise capacity: 223 of 230. Higher anxiety scores were associated with lower capacity, even after age, smoking, depression and peak systolic blood pressure were included. This does not prove treating anxiety improves exercise. PT Protocol Telehealth Exercise Intervention in Older Adults With HIV: Protocol of a Multisite Randomized Trial. The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC No results yet. This protocol plans a randomized trial of telehealth group exercise for older adults with HIV. It can show feasibility and fitness effects later, but cannot change patient care now. PT OT RN Survey 2021 The information needs of people with COPD-The holistic approach with special reference to gender and time since diagnosis. Nursing open People with COPD reported many unmet information needs about counselling, especially what to do when breathing worsens, when to call an ambulance, diet, palliative care, fatigue and daily life. Ask about these topics. PT RN Qualitative Facilitators and Challenges to Exergaming: Perspectives of Patients With Heart Failure. The Journal of cardiovascular nursing Patients with heart failure described Nintendo Wii exergaming at home as fun and convenient at first, but reported playing less over time because of boredom, repetitive games, and hand-eye coordination frustrations. PT OT SLP RN Qualitative 2022 Can sharing clinic notes improve communication and promote self-management? A qualitative study of patients with COPD. Patient education and counseling Patients with COPD reported that reading their clinic notes helped them remember care plans, understand their role in self-management, and feel listened to. However, medical jargon, abbreviations, and errors in the notes caused confusion or anxiety, limiting their usefulness. PT Other 2021 Grip strength as a predictor of disease severity in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Among hospitalized adults with confirmed COVID-19, low grip strength at admission was associated with severe disease even after considering age, obesity, COPD and CRP. It may help flag risk, but this was an association, not proof grip strength caused severity. PT Qualitative 2022 Using crowdsourced medicine to manage uncertainty on Reddit: The case of COVID-19 long-haulers. Patient education and counseling Long-haulers on Reddit shared symptoms, sought diagnoses, and leaned on one another for validation. They described exercise as both potentially helpful and symptom-worsening, and felt dismissed when doctors attributed symptoms to anxiety. PT RN Qualitative Pain in Homebound Older Adults with Heart Failure after Hospital Discharge. Home healthcare now Homebound older adults with heart failure reported pain averaging 5.2 out of 10 after discharge, with sleep and walking most affected. Patients often waited until pain was severe before taking medication and said providers did not always acknowledge it. PT RN Cohort 2022 Muscle strength and functional outcome after prone positioning in COVID-19 ICU survivors. Intensive & critical care nursing At ICU discharge, prone positioning with swimmer arm placement was not associated with worse upper-limb strength or mobility compared with supine positioning among 87 COVID-19 ICU survivors. PT RN Cohort 2022 Cardiovascular Outcomes of Patients Referred to Home Based Cardiac Rehabilitation. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Patients who attended home cardiac rehab had fewer deaths or hospitalizations from 3 to 12 months after referral. The program bundled exercise, monitoring, education and nurse calls, so the cause is unclear. PT RN Other 2022 Effects of a National Quality Improvement Collaborative on ABCDEF Bundle Implementation. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses ICU ABCDEF bundle use rose slowly with a national collaborative, reaching 12% complete bundle performance after 14 months. Early mobility remained under 40% in most units, and no patient outcomes were measured. PT OT Meta-Analysis 2022 Respiratory rehabilitation in patients recovering from severe acute respiratory syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Respiratory rehabilitation improved six-minute walk distance by 45.79 m in pooled comparative studies. Lung function changes were mixed, quality of life did not clearly improve, and no serious adverse events were reported. PT OT RN Qualitative 2022 Cardiac rehabilitation program: An exploration of patient experiences and perspectives on program dropout. Worldviews on evidence-based nursing Patients who left cardiac rehab valued peer support and routine, but stopped because breathlessness, fear, travel, time demands, and exercise that felt too slow or too easy. Ask about these before assuming patients are nonadherent. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2022 Relationships Between Community Virus Activity and Cardiorespiratory Rehospitalizations From Post-Acute Care. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association Community spread of influenza A(H3N2), influenza B, and RSV is linked to higher rates of heart and lung rehospitalizations for nursing home residents. Clinicians should intensify infection control and monitoring during these specific viral seasons. PT Qualitative 2022 Cardiac rehabilitation in rural and remote areas of North Queensland: How well are we doing? The Australian journal of rural health People with heart disease in rural North Queensland generally left hospital without clear post-discharge cardiac rehabilitation. Local staff said they were not receiving referrals, and telephone support was rarely used. Participants preferred face-to-face community care. PT Other 2022 Evaluation of pulmonary function and exercise capacity after COVID-19 pneumonia. Heart & lung : the journal of critical care Two months after hospital discharge, 17 of 79 post-COVID pneumonia patients had restrictive lung function, especially after severe/critical disease, but six-minute walk distance did not separate severity groups. PT RN Other 2022 The effect of slow deep breathing relaxation exercise on pain levels during and post chest tube removal after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. International journal of nursing sciences After chest tube removal after bypass surgery, patients who added slow deep breathing to usual care had lower pain scores at 5 and 15 minutes than those receiving usual care with analgesics. PT Qualitative 2022 Assistance to patients eligible for palliative care: the view of professionals from an Intensive Care Unit. Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da U S P ICU staff described care for patients eligible for palliative care as inconsistent: no clear protocols, poor communication, too few trained workers, and pain relief or basic care depending on who was on duty. PT OT Pilot 2022 Remotely supervised home-based online chair yoga intervention for older adults with dementia: Feasibility study. Complementary therapies in clinical practice Online chair yoga at home was feasible for older adults with dementia: 7 of 10 who started completed it, with no injuries. Clinical outcomes did not improve, and emotional loneliness increased, so this does not show benefit. PT OT Survey 2022 Characterization of Home Care Services and care for children with special health care needs. Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da U S P In seven Brazilian home-care services, all 18 children with special health needs required psychomotor and social rehabilitation; 13 needed oxygen, 12 gastrostomy, 10 tracheostomy and 9 ventilation. Caregivers were trained verbally, in writing and by demonstration. PT OT Cohort 2022 Utility of Screening for Cognitive Impairment at Hospital Discharge in Adult Survivors of Critical Illness. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Most ICU survivors could complete a phone cognitive screen at discharge, but those who could not were older, had more ventilator days, and had more daily-living impairments. Lower screen scores were linked to new severe disability, not death. PT RN Qualitative 2022 Patients' and Caregivers' Perceptions of Intensive Care Unit Hospitalization and Recovery. American journal of critical care : an official publication, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses ICU survivors and caregivers described the ICU stay as traumatic and recovery as uneven. Some received home health and physical therapy; most patients wanted more physical therapy, mental health attention, realistic expectations, and care coordination. PT RN Survey 2022 Persistent/Late-Onset Complications of COVID-19 in General Population: A Cross-Sectional Study in Tehran, Iran. International journal of community based nursing and midwifery Four weeks after symptom onset, 345 of 447 Tehran patients reported persistent complications, especially cardiopulmonary symptoms, hair loss, and fatigue; female sex, inadequate rest, and psychological distress were associated. PT OT RN Systematic Review 2022 Minimizing Post-Intensive Care Syndrome to Improve Outcomes for Intensive Care Unit Survivors. Critical care nurse ICU survivors often develop weakness, sleep problems, cognitive deficits, and PTSD. This review recommends nurses treat pain, limit sedation, mobilize early, protect sleep, and engage families. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2022 Reasons for Hospitalization while Receiving Dementia Care Coordination through Maximizing Independence at Home. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association In older adults with dementia receiving home care coordination, infection and falls were the top causes of hospitalization. Severely impaired patients were hospitalized most often for infection, while mildly impaired patients fell most often. PT RN Survey 2023 Symptom clusters, associated factors and health-related quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A structural equation modelling analysis. Journal of clinical nursing In adults with COPD, breathlessness, weakness, drowsiness and poor mobility clustered together; anxiety and depression also clustered, and each cluster was associated with lower quality of life. These clusters suggest symptoms can be assessed as groups, not one by one. PT OT RN Cohort 2023 A Retrospective, Descriptive Study of Dyspnea Management in a Multidisciplinary Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic. The American journal of hospice & palliative care In a real-world interstitial lung disease clinic, every patient received breathlessness self-management advice, and many got oxygen, pulmonary rehab, home care or opioids. Dyspnea scores rose slightly near death, but no control group means benefit cannot be proven. PT Other 2023 Candidate biomarkers of physical frailty in heart failure: an exploratory cross-sectional study. European journal of cardiovascular nursing Plasma IGF-1, adiponectin, and myostatin were lower in adults with heart failure who were physically frail. Other tested markers did not show these associations, and the findings are preliminary. PT OT RN Pilot 2022 Cardiometabolic Risk Factors Among Insufficiently Active African American Women With Obesity: Baseline Findings From Smart Walk. The Journal of cardiovascular nursing Insufficiently active African American women with obesity had very low physical activity, high blood pressure, and poor cardiorespiratory fitness. Most met criteria for metabolic syndrome. These baseline findings describe a high-risk group but do not test whether an intervention improves these outcomes. PT OT SLP RN Cohort 2022 Cross-sectional study of pain-related variables before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in patients with COPD. Pain management nursing : official journal of the American Society of Pain Management Nurses During the COVID-19 pandemic, stable COPD patients reported higher pain sensitivity, pain interference, dyspnea, and fatigue compared to pre-pandemic levels. Perceived health status worsened, though anxiety and depression scores did not differ significantly. PT OT RN Survey 2022 Development of a non-pharmacologic delirium management bundle in paediatric intensive care units. Nursing in critical care Experts agreed on a bundle of non-drug steps for paediatric delirium: daily routine, light adjustment, sleep scheduling, glasses and hearing aids, and parent presence. It is a consensus list, not a tested intervention. PT RN Qualitative 2022 Longing for homelikeness: A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis of patients' lived experiences in recovery from COVID-19-associated intensive care unit acquired weakness. Journal of advanced nursing Patients recovering from COVID-19 ICU-acquired weakness described waking into an unfamiliar body, craving human contact, and finding progress through small, supported steps. Setbacks and fatigue remained common after coming home. ← Previous PAGE 2 OF 21 Next →
