PT OT Pilot 2022 A Novel Body Weight-Supported Postural Perturbation Module for Gait and Balance Rehabilitation After Stroke: Preliminary Evaluation Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Adding automated balance perturbations to a body weight support system was safe and feasible for stroke inpatients. It did not significantly improve balance scores compared to standard body weight support alone, though both groups improved more than historical controls. PT OT Qualitative 2022 A qualitative examination of the usability of a digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia program after stroke. Brain injury People with stroke found the digital sleep program engaging but often unsafe or impractical. Advice to leave bed or stop napping conflicted with fatigue and mobility issues, while cognitive barriers required partner support. Standard CBT-I protocols need adaptation before being recommended for this population. PT OT Cohort 2022 Determinants of impaired bed mobility in Parkinson's disease: Impact of hip muscle strength and motor symptoms. NeuroRehabilitation Arm rigidity and weak hip adductors, not general axial stiffness, drive slow bed mobility in Parkinson's. Patients with these deficits rely on hip-hitching or lateral flexion without rotation. Targeting hip strength and managing arm rigidity may improve turning efficiency. OT Other 2022 Smart Assistive Technology for Cooking for People With Cognitive Impairments Following a Traumatic Brain Injury: User Experience Study. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Ten adults with traumatic brain injury rated a smart cooking assistant as easy to use and helpful for safety. All needed guidance during testing, and most wanted it at home. Space, pets, and visual deficits were key barriers to independent use. OT Case Series 2022 Clinical features of dementia cases ascertained by ICD coding in LIMBIC-CENC multicenter study of mild traumatic brain injury. Brain injury Five service members and veterans with mTBI had dementia codes; all had moderate or severe daily-life disability. Two of five had study cognitive test results that did not support a dementia diagnosis, so ICD coding alone may be unreliable. OT Case-Control 2022 Health and cognition among adults with and without Traumatic Brain Injury: A matched case-control study. Brain injury One year after moderate-to-severe TBI, adults were more likely to report anxiety/depression/other emotional disorder, chronic sleep problems, and stroke than matched uninjured adults. Poor self-rated health also tracked with much lower thinking scores in TBI than controls. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2022 Facilitators and barriers to performing dietary behaviors among chronic community-dwelling stroke survivors: A qualitative secondary analysis. Disability and health journal Chronic stroke survivors described how hemiparesis, fatigue, and taste changes make grocery shopping and cooking difficult. They relied on care-partners and adaptive equipment, but this dependence caused frustration. Fear and dissatisfaction led some to stop cooking or dining with others, reducing participation in meaningful daily activities. PT OT SLP Case-Control 2022 Traumatic Brain Injury and Early Onset Dementia in Post 9-11 Veterans. Brain injury Post-9/11 Veterans with a history of traumatic brain injury had three times the odds of early-onset dementia compared to matched controls. The risk was nearly six times higher for frontotemporal dementia than for Alzheimer's, suggesting TBI may specifically drive FTD pathology. PT OT Cohort 2022 Assessment of changes in muscle mass, strength, and quality and activities of daily living in elderly stroke patients. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Stroke patients improved activities of daily living over four weeks when muscle strength and muscle quality improved. Muscle mass did not track recovery and even tended to fall, so mass is a poor marker of rehabilitation progress. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 The diagnostic levels of evidence of instrumented devices for measuring viscoelastic joint properties and spasticity; a systematic review. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation No study showed that robotic devices improve patient care. The highest evidence level found was for basic comparisons, not diagnostic accuracy. Clinicians should not assume these tools are ready for routine practice or that they change outcomes. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Advanced brain age in deployment-related traumatic brain injury: A LIMBIC-CENC neuroimaging study. Brain injury In male veterans, a history of deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury was associated with a brain appearing 0.95 years older than expected. No such link was found in females or in longitudinal data. Higher PTSD, depression, and alcohol misuse scores were also associated with older brain age. PT OT RCT 2022 A randomized clinical control study on the efficacy of three-dimensional upper limb robotic exoskeleton training in chronic stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The total upper limb Fugl-Meyer score did not improve more with robotic exoskeleton training than manual therapy in chronic stroke. Robotic training showed greater shoulder and elbow scores and faster bimanual task times on other measures. OT RCT 2022 Concomitant Detrusor and External Urethral Sphincter Botulinum Toxin-A Injections in Male Spinal Cord Injury Patients with Detrusor Overactivity and Detrusor Sphincter Dyssynergia. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Detrusor and sphincter botulinum toxin injections lowered bladder and urethral pressures and increased capacity in 20 men with spinal cord injury, while catheter frequency, diaper use, and residual urine ratio stayed similar. PT OT RCT 2022 Intensive Circuit Class Therapy in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. Journal of rehabilitation medicine 12 weeks of supervised circuit training improved balance, walking, fatigue, and mood in 23 people with relapsing-remitting MS. The control group showed no change. This suggests group physiotherapy is a viable option for mild-to-moderate disability. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Responsiveness of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability And Health (ICF) Clinical Functioning Information Tool (ClinFIT) in Routine Clinical Practice in an Australian Inpatient Rehabilitation Setting. Journal of rehabilitation medicine The ClinFIT tool detected significant improvements in patient functioning from admission to discharge and at 3 months. Scores dropped from a median of 196 to 69 at discharge. It tracks broad disability changes alongside standard functional independence measures in inpatient rehab. PT OT Other 2022 A Rasch-Based Comparison of the Functional Independence Measure and Spinal Cord Independence Measure for Outcome and Quality in the Rehabilitation of Persons with Spinal Cord Injury. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) scores can be mathematically converted to Functional Independence Measure (FIM) motor scores with high accuracy. The SCIM is more sensitive for patients with severe injuries, capturing finer differences in low-functioning mobility and self-care than the FIM. PT OT SLP Cohort 2021 Characteristics Associated with the Use of an Inpatient Rehabilitation or Skilled Nursing Facility after Acute Care in Children with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. Developmental neurorehabilitation Children with severe TBI in the UK had 93% lower odds of inpatient rehabilitation than US peers. Longer acute stays predicted home-based care. Younger children and African Americans in the US were less likely to be admitted to inpatient rehab, though these demographic findings were unadjusted. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Use of Mobile/Tablet and Web-Based Applications to Support Rehabilitation After Stroke: A Scoping Review. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Stroke rehabilitation apps mostly supported assessment or training for mild to moderate, often chronic, survivors. Evidence was mainly feasibility and pilot studies, with little on goal setting, participation, severe stroke, or clinical effects. PT OT SLP Meta-Analysis 2022 Effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation in modulating cortical excitability in patients with stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Low-frequency stimulation to the unaffected side increased excitability in the damaged side and decreased it in the healthy side. High-frequency and intermittent theta burst also boosted the damaged side. Continuous theta burst showed no clear effect. These are neurophysiological changes, not proven functional gains. PT OT Other 2022 Fatigue is Associated with Reduced Participation and Health-Related Quality of Life Five Years After Perimesencephalic Subarachnoid Haemorrhage: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine 5 years after perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage, patients with fatigue reported less frequent participation, more restrictions, and worse quality of life. Fatigue severity stayed associated with these outcomes after depression, anxiety, hypertension and comorbidity were considered. PT OT Cohort 2022 Predictive Equations Overestimate Resting Metabolic Rate in Survivors of Chronic Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Standard equations overestimated resting metabolic rate in chronic stroke survivors by 9% to 60%. Using these predictions for calorie targets risks weight gain. Equations relying on lean body mass were most accurate, but all tested methods exceeded measured needs. OT RCT 2022 Impact of the robotic-assistance level on upper extremity function in stroke patients receiving adjunct robotic rehabilitation: sub-analysis of a randomized clinical trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation In 30 stroke patients using a robot, overall arm function change did not clearly differ between high and low assistance. Higher assistance was linked with larger shoulder, elbow and task gains in severe weakness; lower assistance was linked with larger gains in milder weakness. PT OT Pilot 2022 Visually Induced Kinaesthetic Illusion Combined with Therapeutic Exercise for Patients with Chronic Stroke: A Pilot Study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Ten patients with chronic severe stroke improved finger movement, reduced wrist stiffness, and used their arm more after two weeks of visual illusion therapy followed by exercise. No control group means these gains cannot be attributed to the illusion alone. PT OT RCT 2021 Are Mobile Persons With Parkinson Disease Necessarily More Active? Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT Community mobility does not guarantee physical activity in Parkinson's disease. Walking steps predicted home and neighborhood movement but not travel beyond the neighborhood. Sedentary individuals were less mobile at home and in the neighborhood but similar to active individuals in town. Assess local mobility separately from total life-space scores. PT OT Other 2021 Gait patterns in ischemic and hemorrhagic post-stroke patients with delayed access to physiotherapy. Hong Kong physiotherapy journal : official publication of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Limited = Wu li chih liao Chronic stroke patients waiting for physiotherapy showed different recovery patterns based on stroke type. Ischemic stroke patients improved walking speed and muscle timing, but hemorrhagic patients showed little change. Neither group reported improved quality of life, suggesting late treatment has limited functional gains. OT Cohort Global Disability Trajectories Over the First Decade Following Combat Concussion. The Journal of head trauma rehabilitation After deployment, service members with combat concussion, whether or not blast was involved, were more likely to have greater long-term disability than controls without concussion. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Ecological Momentary Assessment of Real-World Functional Behaviors in Individuals With Stroke: A Longitudinal Observational Study. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Stroke survivors spent a median 78% of sampled waking time at home and 27% in passive leisure, with only 4% in physical activities. EMA surveys tracked these real-world patterns reliably, showing higher adherence than prior stroke studies and strong agreement with standard symptom measures. PT OT SLP Survey 2022 Caregiving, Participation, and Quality of Life of Closest Next of Kin of Persons Living with Spinal Cord Injury in Norway. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Most caregivers of people with spinal cord injury in Norway reported good quality of life and happiness in caring. However, one-quarter experienced high strain, especially emotional adjustment. Injury severity predicted practical help given, but not emotional burden or overall well-being. PT OT Other 2021 Development and Results of an Implementation Plan for High-Intensity Gait Training. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT An implementation plan helped physiotherapists deliver high-intensity gait training in stroke rehab. Clinicians prioritized the training and reduced other interventions, while patients reported high satisfaction. Because there was no control group, this describes a process change rather than proving the plan caused improved walking. PT OT Systematic Review 2022 Overground robotic training effects on walking and secondary health conditions in individuals with spinal cord injury: systematic review. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Overground exoskeleton training in spinal cord injury reported walking-speed improvements in small, low-quality studies, but the evidence was too inconsistent to show it beats usual therapy. Skin lesions, falls and fractures occurred. OT RCT 2022 Upper Limb Training with a Dynamic Hand Orthosis in Early Subacute Stroke: A Pilot Randomized Trial. Journal of rehabilitation medicine A dynamic hand orthosis worn for 30 min during 4 weeks of daily upper limb training did not improve arm and hand function more than training alone in 30 people after stroke. PT OT RCT 2022 Bimanual motor skill learning with robotics in chronic stroke: comparison between minimally impaired and moderately impaired patients, and healthy individuals. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Chronic stroke patients learned a complex bimanual robotic task over three days, but moderate-impairment patients improved less than healthy controls. Minimal-impairment patients showed an intermediate progression and generalized less to a new path. PT OT Other 2021 Between-site equivalence of turning speed assessments using inertial measurement units. Gait & posture Turning speed measured by sensors was equivalent across two sites for 6 of 21 outcomes. A custom clinical turning course showed the most consistency, while a one-minute walk test showed none. Site differences in environment may affect head and trunk measurements more than pelvis. OT Case Series 2022 Robotic Table and Serious Games for Integrative Rehabilitation in the Early Poststroke Phase: Two Case Reports. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Two people early after stroke added robotic table game training to usual physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Both showed gains in arm function, but the table's contribution cannot be separated from usual therapy or natural recovery. PT OT Other 2022 Reliability and Validity of a New Diagnostic Device for Quantifying Hemiparetic Arm Impairments: An Exploratory Study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine A new robotic device reliably measures elbow strength, spasticity, and joint stiffness in stroke and CP patients. It matches clinical tests well for these areas. However, it is less accurate for measuring abnormal movement synergy, especially in adults with CP. PT OT Other 2022 Mind your step: Target walking task reveals gait disturbance in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation People with incomplete spinal cord injury could step onto moving targets but moved their body center less smoothly than controls. Their ability to adapt worsened with higher injury levels, linking this lab task to real-world walking limitations. PT OT Other 2022 Physical activity and vascular comorbidity in Black and White persons with multiple sclerosis: A cross-sectional study. Disability and health journal Black persons with MS accumulated less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity than white persons after accounting for socioeconomic and clinical differences. Moderate-to-vigorous activity correlated with fewer vascular comorbidities in white participants only. No such association was found for black participants. PT OT SLP Other 2022 Greater Cognitive-Motor Interference in Individuals Post-Stroke During More Complex Motor Tasks. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT People post-stroke slowed down significantly more than healthy adults during a dual-task Timed Up-and-Go, but their counting accuracy stayed stable. Healthy adults slowed down less but made more counting errors. The complex TUG reveals motor interference in stroke without cognitive cost. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 Perceptions of function and recovery among persons with stroke and care partners. Rehabilitation psychology Most stroke survivors rated their recovery higher than their partners did, and partners often viewed daily tasks as harder for them. These gaps were linked to higher caregiver strain and depression. Screening both partners' perceptions helps identify couples at risk. PT OT SLP Pilot 2022 Usability of a two-way personalized mobile trainer system in a community-based exercise program for adults with chronic traumatic brain injury. Brain injury Twenty adults with chronic traumatic brain injury completed a 3-month home exercise program supported by a mobile tracking app. They achieved 76% compliance, and 90% rated the program good or excellent, but exercise endurance did not significantly improve. OT Other 2022 Factors associated with recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder in combat veterans: The role of deployment mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Rehabilitation psychology Veterans recovered from PTSD reported lower depression, pain, and neurobehavioral symptoms, better sleep, and higher quality of life than those with current PTSD. Cognitive scores did not differ by recovery alone, but recovered veterans with deployment mTBI had better processing speed. PT OT Survey 2022 Self-reported parkinsonism features in older autistic adults: A descriptive study. Autism : the international journal of research and practice Older autistic adults without suspected intellectual disability often reported parkinsonism features such as stiffness and slowness. 16.9% in the Netherlands and 33% in the USA screened positive, compared with 2.6% estimated for parkinsonism in people over 65. This is screening, not diagnosis. PT OT Case Series 2022 Implanted Peroneal Nerve Stimulator Treatment for Drop Foot Caused by Central Nervous System Lesion: A Twelve-Month Follow-up of 21 Patients. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Patients with drop foot from central nervous system lesions reported high satisfaction and perceived performance gains after implanted peroneal nerve stimulation. Walking speed and endurance improved slightly. This was an uncontrolled study of 21 patients, so it shows what happened, not that the device caused the change. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Using the Multidimensional Model of Acceptance to Investigate How Different Facets of Acceptance are Related to Quality of Life Following Spinal Cord Injury. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Acceptance predicts quality of life in spinal cord injury even after controlling for depression and anxiety. Focusing on value-change and behavioural engagement matters most. Letting go of control showed weak links. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2022 White Paper by the European Society for Swallowing Disorders: Screening and Non-instrumental Assessment for Dysphagia in Adults. Dysphagia Many commonly used dysphagia screening tools and patient questionnaires have poor or unproven accuracy. The paper recommends stopping use of unvalidated measures and relying only on tools with strong evidence for the specific patient population being assessed. PT OT Cohort 2021 Effects of different baggage carrying methods on walking while wearing an arm sling in simulated hemiplegic stroke patients. Journal of physical therapy science Wearing an arm sling and carrying a 1 kg bag restricted pelvic rotation and tilt compared to normal walking. The differences were small (less than 5°) and hard to see. This was tested in healthy adults simulating stroke, not actual patients. PT OT Case-Control 2022 Individuals with Higher Levels of Physical Activity after Stroke Show Comparable Patterns of Myelin to Healthy Older Adults. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Stroke survivors who were more physically active showed brain myelin patterns comparable to healthy older adults, unlike those with low activity levels. This suggests physical activity may protect against myelin asymmetry after stroke, independent of motor impairment or arm use differences. PT OT Cohort 2022 Impairments in Cognitive Control Using a Reverse Visually Guided Reaching Task Following Stroke. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Most stroke participants were impaired on a reverse reaching task, including with their less affected arm. A simple reaching test missed reverse-reaching problems in 27.1% of participants with the less affected arm. PT OT SLP Cohort 2022 Risk factors for development of long-term mood and anxiety disorder after pediatric traumatic brain injury: a population-based, birth cohort analysis. Brain injury Children who sustained a traumatic brain injury at age 5 or older had a higher risk of developing anxiety or mood disorders by age 25 than those injured before age 5. Injury severity and other factors showed weaker or inconsistent associations. PT OT SLP RCT 2022 Changes in Perceived Impact of Stroke on Everyday Life over Five Years in a Rehabilitation Sample that Received an Activity of Daily Living Intervention: A Follow-Up Study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Five years after stroke, patients reported better participation in daily life than at three months, regardless of whether they received client-centred or usual ADL training. However, perceived impact on communication, mobility, and hand function worsened over time in the client-centred group. ← Previous PAGE 23 OF 56 Next →
