Scoliosis deformity reduction in adults: a CBP® Mirror Image® case series incorporating the 'non-commutative property of finite rotation angles under addition' in five patients with lumbar and thoraco-lumbar scoliosis.

WHAT IT FOUND

Five women with lumbar or thoraco-lumbar scoliosis reported less pain and had smaller measured curves after combined mirror image adjustments, exercise, traction, heel lifts in some cases, and initial manipulation.

The package, not any one component, was tested.

Key findings

01Table 1 lists lower post-treatment NRS pain scores and lower LD angles than pre-treatment values for all five women.

02The authors state it is not known which of mirror image adjusting, exercise, or traction contributed to the correction.

03In Case 1, the LD angle was 30° and lateral translation was +8 mm after 5 months without treatment, showing some regression.

What it does not show

This was a retrospective case series of five women, so it has no control group and cannot show that the care caused the changes. All patients had to be female, past the female growth spurt, have chronic low back pain, and have specific thoracic postural displacements, so the findings apply to a narrow group. The care was a package of mirror image adjustments, exercise, and traction, and the authors state it is not known which component contributed. Heel lifts and initial manipulation were also part of some or all patients' care, which makes attribution to the named CBP methods uncertain. The authors used modified Risser-Ferguson angles rather than Cobb angles, and several re-examinations were omitted for brevity. Case 1 showed some regression at 5 months after treatment stopped, so durability is not established.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that order-specific mirror image adjustments, exercise, and traction reduce adult scoliosis. This was a case series of five women with no control group, and other care such as heel lifts and initial manipulation was also given.
