Seongkum Heo, Tammy Barbé, Justus Randolph and 1 others

PMID 42370575

WHAT IT FOUND

Patients with diabetes randomly assigned to four short virtual compassion meditation sessions reported lower diabetes distress and higher confidence in managing diabetes than controls.

In the meditation group, depressive symptoms, resilience and self-esteem did not improve. This pilot analysed 46 people.

Key findings

01At follow-up, diabetes distress was lower in the meditation group than controls (1.8 vs 2.5).

02At follow-up, diabetes self-efficacy was higher in the meditation group than controls (31.4 vs 27.2).

03In the meditation group, depressive symptoms, resilience and self-esteem did not improve.

What it does not show

This was a pilot with 46 analysed, so it cannot establish that the intervention works. Attrition was high and unequal: 46 of 86 completed follow-up, and more control participants than meditation participants completed. Participants were not blinded, and the researchers could not verify whether people actually watched the sessions. The sample came from a national research volunteer registry, so it may not represent community patients with diabetes. The study tested many psychological outcomes and did not state a single primary endpoint. Self-esteem was lower in the meditation group at baseline, so follow-up comparisons are harder to interpret.

Declared interests

Funded by a Mercer University Seed Grant to Georgia Baptist College of Nursing; the authors declared no conflicts of interest.

The easy way to misread this

Do not read this as proof that four virtual meditation sessions reliably improve diabetes psychological health. The trial analysed 46 people, had high attrition, did not verify session viewing, and depressive symptoms and resilience did not change.
