Alleviation of chronic spine pain and headaches by reducing forward head posture and thoracic hyperkyphosis: a CBP® case report.

Miles O Fortner, Paul A Oakley, Deed E Harrison

PMID 30154612

WHAT IT FOUND

One man with seven years of mid back pain, headaches and dizziness reported 90% improvement after 36 posture correction visits.

Several exercises, manual therapy and traction were used together, so no single part can be credited.

Key findings

01After 36 visits over 12 weeks, the patient reported 90% improvement in mid back pain, headaches and dizziness.

02At follow-up, his average mid back pain score was 1/10, neck disability score was 4% and headache disability score was 0%.

03Radiographs showed reduced anterior head translation (23.1 mm vs 38.2 mm) and reduced thoracic kyphosis (46.4° vs 55.2°), but the paper states multiple treatments were given and any single component's contribution cannot be separated.

What it does not show

This is a single case report, so it cannot show that the treatment works for other patients. There was no control group, no comparison treatment and no randomisation. The patient received several treatments together, so the effect of any one component cannot be separated. The paper reports no long-term follow-up. The authors had conflicts of interest related to the treatment being reported.

Declared interests

One author was paid by the CBP NonProfit to write the manuscript. Another author teaches chiropractic rehabilitation methods and sells products used in the treatment.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that CBP extension traction or mirror image exercises alone caused the improvement. The patient received mirror image exercises, neck extension against resistance, anterior thoracic translation exercises, foam rolling, spinal manipulative therapy, mirror image drop table maneuvers, UTS traction and home Denneroll traction together. The paper states that the contribution of any single component cannot be separated. This is one case with no long-term follow-up.
