PT OT Cohort 2023 Walking Outcome After Traumatic Paraplegic Spinal Cord Injury: The Function of Which Myotomes Makes a Difference? Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Early hip flexion and knee extension strength on the weaker leg predicts whether a person with paraplegic SCI will walk at six months. Distal leg strength determines if they can walk outdoors. These simple bedside tests help set realistic recovery expectations and guide rehab intensity. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Health-related quality of life in adolescents with cerebral palsy; a cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based study. Child: care, health and development For adolescents with severe cerebral palsy, caregiver-reported quality of life remained largely stable over five years, except for general health which declined due to increased medication use. Severe motor impairment and pain consistently predicted lower quality of life across most domains. PT OT Other 2023 Multicentric investigation on the safety, feasibility and usability of the ABLE lower-limb robotic exoskeleton for individuals with spinal cord injury: a framework towards the standardisation of clinical evaluations. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The ABLE exoskeleton was safe and feasible for 24 people with spinal cord injury. No falls occurred, and donning took about seven minutes. Walking independence improved, but without a control group, these gains may reflect natural recovery or standard therapy rather than the device itself. PT OT Survey 2023 Perspectives on ankle-foot technology for improving gait performance of children with Cerebral Palsy in daily-life: requirements, needs and wishes. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Clinicians and families with cerebral palsy disagree on what matters most in ankle-foot orthoses. Families prioritise a normal-looking walk and comfort, while clinicians prioritise terrain adaptability. Both groups report low confidence in prescribing devices based on clinic assessments alone. PT Other 2023 Psychometric properties of the Obstacles and Curb tests and their discriminative ability across functional levels in ambulatory children with spastic cerebral palsy. International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation Obstacle and curb walking tests matched closely with standard timed walking and balance scores in 34 ambulatory children with spastic cerebral palsy, and times separated GMFCS levels. They may help PTs assess challenging walking, not prove treatment effects. PT Other 2023 Effect of intramuscular lidocaine injection with physical therapy on camptocormia in patients with Parkinson's disease who had previously had deep brain stimulation. Journal of physical therapy science Nine patients with Parkinson's disease and camptocormia showed improved posture and balance after lidocaine injections and treadmill training. Walking speed did not change, and stride length improved slightly. The study cannot determine whether the injection or the therapy caused these effects. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Relationship between gait regularity and harmony, and gait speed at discharge in inpatients with subacute stroke. Journal of physical therapy science In 16 subacute stroke inpatients, early trunk smoothness and vertical step regularity correlated with discharge walking speed. This suggests monitoring vertical trunk movement stability during early gait, though the small sample and high baseline function limit broader application. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2023 Use of the Digital Assistant Vigo in the Home Environment for Stroke Recovery: Focus Group Discussion With Specialists Working in Neurorehabilitation. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Specialists said this stroke home app suited only a small group of patients. They wanted therapist assessment, adjustable exercises, voice or video instead of chat text, and caregiver support. PT Case Report 2023 Long-term body-weight-supported treadmill training for incomplete cervical spinal cord injury: a case report. Journal of physical therapy science One man with incomplete cervical spinal cord injury received home body-weight-supported treadmill training plus usual physiotherapy for over ten years. Leg strength and body-weight support improved or held, then worsened. This is one person, not proof the training works. PT OT Pilot 2023 Relative and absolute reliability of gait variables obtained from gait analysis with trunk acceleration in community-dwelling individuals with chronic stroke: a pilot study. Journal of physical therapy science Trunk acceleration sensors reliably track gait changes in chronic stroke patients, especially during fast walking. Clinicians can trust small improvements measured this way, as the sensor noise is low enough to distinguish real progress from measurement error. PT OT Other 2023 Psychometric properties of Upper-body Dressing Scale in people with stroke. Journal of rehabilitation medicine Timing how long it takes a stroke patient to put on a shirt distinguishes them from healthy adults with high accuracy. The standard score failed to do this because patients with good cognition needed no help. Use the time taken, not the cue count, to track recovery. PT OT Systematic Review 2023 Satisfaction analysis of overground gait exoskeletons in people with neurological pathology. a systematic review. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Across 23 studies, people with stroke, spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis reported generally positive satisfaction with overground gait exoskeletons, especially safety, efficacy and comfort. Fitting, removal, weight, size and ease of use were the weakest points. PT Narrative Review 2023 Evidence for the Efficacy of Commercially Available Wearable Biofeedback Gait Devices: Consumer-Centered Review. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Most commercially available wearable biofeedback gait devices have little published efficacy evidence. Only 4 of 11 had small studies. Websites often rely on testimonials and claim benefits for groups not tested. PT Case Report 2023 Short-term effects of pedaling exercise combined with integrated volitional control electrical stimulation in an older patient hospitalized for subacute stroke: ABA single-case design. Journal of physical therapy science In one older subacute stroke patient, stride consistency and sideways trunk sway changed most during the pedaling plus IVES phase; other trunk sway measures changed most during pedaling alone. This single case cannot show the treatment works. PT OT Qualitative 2023 "Kind of empowered": Perceptions of socio-emotional development in children driving ride-on cars. Rehabilitation psychology Caregivers described ride-on cars as helping their children feel empowered and equal to peers. They viewed the cars as a fun toy rather than a medical device, which reduced stigma and allowed for more natural social interaction and autonomy. PT OT Cohort 2023 Reliability and validity of the Hebrew version of the International Spinal Cord Injury Activities and Participation Basic Data Set. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine In 47 people with spinal cord injury, the Hebrew activities and participation questionnaire gave similar answers when repeated, and self-care scores tracked disability well. Mobility, occupation, and relationship scores were less dependable, so interpret those parts cautiously. PT Cohort 2023 Online monitoring of focal spasticity treatment with botulinum toxin in people with chronic stroke or hereditary spastic paraplegia: a feasibility study. Journal of rehabilitation medicine A smartphone app for daily spasticity self-report was feasible for hereditary spastic paraplegia, median adherence 63%, but much harder for stroke, median 20%. Users valued graphs; clinicians wanted tailored items and integration with records. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Does gender moderate the association between socioeconomic status and health? Results from an observational study in persons with spinal cord injury living in Morocco. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences How people with spinal cord injury in Morocco felt about their social standing and financial hardship strongly predicted their health outcomes. Traditional markers like education and income did not. Gender did not significantly change these links, except for one finding on general health. PT Other 2023 Predicting Outdoor Walking 1 Year After Spinal Cord Injury: A Retrospective, Multisite External Validation Study. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT A three-item spinal cord injury rule predicted outdoor walking one year after injury in United States rehabilitation data. A score of 33 or higher suggested likely outdoor walking; lower scores suggested worse prognosis. PT OT Other 2023 Mobilizing registry data for quality improvement: A convergent mixed-methods analysis and application to spinal cord injury. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Stakeholders described spinal cord injury registry data use for quality improvement as supported by champions, patient input, audit and feedback, and linkage to electronic records, but limited by access, incomplete data, and workload. PT OT SLP Systematic Review 2023 Pain coping tools for children and young adults with a neurodevelopmental disability: A systematic review of measurement properties. Developmental medicine and child neurology No pain coping questionnaire is fully validated for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The CP QoL may flag pain issues, but clinicians should not rely on it alone. Use the FOPQ or BAPQ with caution, knowing they lack validation for this specific population. PT OT Cohort 2023 Postural control exercise without using the upper limbs improves activities of daily living in patients with stroke. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Stroke patients who practiced postural control without using their arms showed greater gains in daily living tasks and walking recovery than those who relied on arm support. This suggests training balance in more unstable conditions may improve functional independence. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2023 Electrical stimulation methods and protocols for the treatment of traumatic brain injury: a critical review of preclinical research. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Preclinical reviews of electrical stimulation in animal models of traumatic brain injury report improvements in motor, cognitive, and arousal outcomes across four methods. However, inconsistent protocols and a lack of long-term data in these animal studies prevent direct application to human clinical practice. PT OT RCT 2023 Gait training with a wearable powered robot during stroke rehabilitation: a randomized parallel-group trial. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation A wearable robot did not improve walking speed or distance more than standard therapist-assisted gait training in stroke patients. Both groups improved similarly, so the robot offers no clear advantage over conventional care for these primary outcomes. PT OT Cohort 2023 Comparison of wrist actimetry variables of paretic upper limb use in post stroke patients for ecological monitoring. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Wrist sensors worn at home for seven days showed that stroke patients with mild to moderate arm weakness made about 800 functional movements per day with their paretic arm versus 4,000 with the other. A ratio of these movements tracked arm impairment better than simple activity counts did. PT SLP Case Series 2023 Applicability of automated tractography during acute care stroke rehabilitation. Journal of physical therapy science Automated tractography in three acute stroke cases showed disrupted or blurred motor and language pathways in cases with hemiparesis or aphasia, and intact pathways in one case without those symptoms. It did not test whether this changed recovery. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Development of social functioning in children with cerebral palsy: A longitudinal study. Developmental medicine and child neurology Children with cerebral palsy who communicate effectively with familiar partners (CFCS level I) developed social skills similar to typical peers by age 12. Those with communication difficulties at unfamiliar levels (CFCS II-V) had social function significantly below age expectations. Intellectual impairment also predicted poorer social function. PT OT Other 2023 Dealing with the heterogeneous presentations of freezing of gait: how reliable are the freezing index and heart rate for freezing detection? Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The freezing index fails to separate freezing from voluntary stops and misfires on turns. Heart rate reliably distinguishes freezing from stops across all types. Combining a simple forward-motion metric with heart rate monitoring may improve home detection of freezing in Parkinson's disease. PT OT Pilot 2023 Development of a compensation-aware virtual rehabilitation system for upper extremity rehabilitation in community-dwelling older adults with stroke. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation The virtual system did not beat conventional therapy on upper-limb function after three months, but both groups improved. It detected compensatory movements, though their counts did not fall. PT Other 2023 Dopamine replacement therapy normalizes reactive step length to postural perturbations in Parkinson's disease. Gait & posture Dopamine medication lengthened reactive step length in Parkinson's patients during automated treadmill perturbations, matching healthy controls. No significant medication effect appeared during manual shoulder pulls. This suggests automated perturbations may detect balance improvements that clinical tests miss. PT OT Case Series 2023 Epidural stimulation restores muscle synergies by modulating neural drives in participants with sensorimotor complete spinal cord injuries. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Epidural stimulation in six people with complete spinal cord injury reduced the number of muscle synergies to match healthy controls, indicating restored coordination. However, the left and right sides remained uncoordinated, and movement was less precise than in able-bodied individuals. PT Other 2023 Data-driven characterization of walking after a spinal cord injury using inertial sensors. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Ankle sensors during a six-minute walk identified four distinct gait patterns in incomplete spinal cord injury patients. Adding these sensor metrics to clinical data improved the accuracy of predicting who would improve their walking capacity in future rehab sessions from 70% to 80%. PT Case Report 2023 Therapeutic hypothermia as a neuroprotective strategy in newborns with perinatal asphyxia-case report. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Two newborns with birth asphyxia who received cooling therapy showed typical motor development and no neurological sequelae at follow-up. Because this is only two cases, it does not prove cooling works, but it illustrates how to monitor high-risk infants for early motor delays. PT OT Systematic Review 2023 A systematic review of the applications of markerless motion capture (MMC) technology for clinical measurement in rehabilitation. Journal of neuroengineering and rehabilitation Markerless video can capture body movement in rehab patients, but the review found the evidence too small and varied to support routine clinical measurement. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2023 "If you respect me, you are respecting my culture": methods and recommendations for personalizing a TBI transitional care intervention. Brain injury Patients and caregivers prioritized autonomy and respect over cultural matching. They wanted to choose their own goals and language, and sought an interventionist who could navigate the health system for them, rather than one who shared their specific cultural background. PT OT SLP Survey 2023 Expected Health Benefits as the Ultimate Outcome of Information Available on Stroke Engine, a Knowledge Translation Stroke Rehabilitation Website: Web-Based Survey. JMIR rehabilitation and assistive technologies Stroke Engine users reported finding information relevant and learning something new. Some reported intending to use it and expecting health benefits, but this was a voluntary website survey, not proof that reading it improves stroke care. PT OT SLP Pilot 2023 An educational intervention to promote a culture of gender equity among persons with traumatic brain injury and caregivers: A pilot study. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences A lecture-based session improved knowledge and skills in people with TBI, but an interactive version did not. The control group also showed gains, so the specific effect of the education remains unclear in this small pilot. PT OT SLP Other 2023 Predicting Motor Outcomes Using Atlas-Based Voxel Features of Post-Stroke Neuroimaging: A Scoping Review. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Atlas-based brain imaging methods for predicting stroke motor recovery are currently unfit for clinical practice. The 17 studies reviewed used widely varying methods, small samples, and lacked validation, making results impossible to compare or apply to patient care. PT OT SLP Narrative Review 2023 Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Acute Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: A Literature Review. Dysphagia Dysphagia is common after cervical spinal cord injury, often silent and linked to tracheostomy, surgery, or respiratory impairment. Screening must account for reduced sensation. Specialist speech-language pathology input is recommended for assessment and tailored rehabilitation. PT Other 2023 Quantification of Tissue Oxygen Saturation in the Vastus Lateralis Muscle of Chronic Stroke Survivors during a Graded Exercise Test. Cardiopulmonary physical therapy journal In 26 chronic stroke survivors, a maximal recumbent stepper test showed the paretic thigh had a smaller oxygen saturation drop and slower recovery than the non-paretic thigh; the paretic drop tracked whole-body oxygen uptake and test time. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 Incidence and risk factors for care-related pain in children with physical disabilities. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Nearly half of children with physical disabilities experienced pain during routine care over five days. Pain was most frequent in younger children and those with high dependency. Prevention measures were used for only 26.5% of acts, leaving a significant gap in managing care-related pain. PT OT SLP Cohort 2023 The impact of cognitive function deficits and their recovery on functional outcome in subjects affected by ischemic subacute stroke: results from the Italian multicenter longitudinal study CogniReMo. European journal of physical and rehabilitation medicine Patients who recovered executive function during rehab improved their independence as much as those who never had a deficit. Those who kept the deficit improved significantly less. Screening for and targeting executive function may be key to functional recovery. PT OT SLP Qualitative 2023 "It is something that gives us hope": Lived experience among parents to children with cerebral palsy who are non-ambulant of the phenomenon physical activity, with or without the use of a novel dynamic standing device. Frontiers in rehabilitation sciences Parents described the Innowalk as their only option for daily exercise, bringing hope by allowing their non-ambulant children to be independent. However, using the device relied heavily on finding supportive staff and accessible environments to manage the burden. PT OT RCT 2023 Motor Activated Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation as a Potential Neuromodulation Approach for Post-Stroke Motor Rehabilitation: A Pilot Study. Neurorehabilitation and neural repair Pairing ear stimulation with movement did not beat unpaired stimulation for stroke arm recovery. Both groups improved similarly. The trial was too small to prove which method works better, so do not change your practice based on this pilot alone. PT Case-Control 2023 Predictive factors for walking in acute stroke patients: a multicenter study using classification and regression tree analysis. Journal of physical therapy science At acute stroke discharge, lower limb stage, ability to turn over, and language or inattention predicted independent walking. Patients with lower limb stage I to III had 0% independent walking in this sample. PT Pilot 2023 The Interplay Between Walking Speed, Economy, and Stability After Stroke. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT In seven people with chronic stroke, walking faster on a treadmill reduced energy cost per meter but made pelvis motion more irregular. Walking slower made pelvis motion more regular but increased energy cost per meter. PT Other 2023 The effects of visual cues from optical stimulation devices on gait disturbance in patients with Parkinson's disease. Journal of physical therapy science Wearable light cues sped up steps and made them more regular in Parkinson's patients. The patient's preferred light setting also walked faster than the disliked one. Stride length and overall speed did not change significantly. PT OT Other 2023 Reliability, Validity, and Responsiveness of the Patient-Specific Functional Scale for Measuring Mobility-Related Goals in People With Multiple Sclerosis. Journal of neurologic physical therapy : JNPT The Patient-Specific Functional Scale reliably tracks mobility goals in multiple sclerosis. A score improvement of 2.5 points signals the patient feels much better. This tool captures personal goals that standard walking tests miss, making it useful for tracking individual progress. PT OT Cohort 2023 Predictive discriminative accuracy of walking abilities at discharge for community ambulation levels at 6 months post-discharge among inpatients with subacute stroke. Journal of physical therapy science Walking tests at discharge predict community ambulation six months later. A 6-minute walk distance of 299 meters or a walking speed of 0.94 meters per second best identified patients who would become unlimited community walkers. These cut-offs help set realistic goals for subacute stroke patients. PT OT Qualitative 2023 The impact of rehabilitation on the community life of stroke survivors in Accra, Ghana. The South African journal of physiotherapy Stroke survivors in Ghana reported improved self-care after six months of physiotherapy, but most could not return to work or socialize. They avoided public life due to embarrassment about visible disabilities, not just physical limits. This highlights a gap in psychosocial support within current rehabilitation services. ← Previous PAGE 44 OF 78 Next →
