What it does not show
Vaccination status and reasons were self-reported by adolescents, and they had to recall past events, which can make the estimates inaccurate. Fear of judgment or shame may have made some students answer in a way that did not reflect their real reasons. The survey was cross-sectional, so it shows what adolescents reported at one time and cannot show what caused non-vaccination or whether an intervention would change it. Only students present in selected classes were included, so adolescents not attending school on the survey day were not represented. Some questions changed in PeNSE 2019, making comparison with earlier editions difficult.
Declared interests
The supplement was supported by PAHO/WHO, and the study was supported by Brazil's health surveillance secretariat under grant TED66/2018. The article is part of a call on adolescent health and the role of nurses; the views expressed are those of the authors.
The easy way to misread this
Do not read the 46.8% unawareness rate as proof that information alone would raise vaccination. The survey reports reasons adolescents gave for not being vaccinated, not what happened after an intervention.
