Theoretically Based Factors Associated With Stroke Family Caregiver Health.

WHAT IT FOUND

Stroke family caregivers who reported more depressive symptoms also reported more days when their own health was poor.

Depression was the only factor independently linked to caregiver poor-health days after other factors were considered. Task difficulty, optimism and threat appraisal were also associated.

Key findings

01All five caregiver factors were significantly correlated with unhealthy days, with Pearson r correlations from .31 to .61.

02In the final model, the five factors together explained 37% of variance in unhealthy days, but depressive symptoms were the only significant individual predictor, accounting for 15% of unique variance.

03Life changes added .4% of variance and was not a significant individual predictor, explaining 0% of unique variance.

What it does not show

This was a secondary analysis of baseline data, so it inherits the parent study's limitations and cannot test the intervention. It was cross-sectional, so it shows association with unhealthy days, not cause. Only variables measured in the parent study could be analysed, which limits the conceptual model. Missing data were imputed, although missingness was less than 4%. Caregivers were mostly female, white and non-Hispanic, so results may not apply to more diverse caregiver groups. Unhealthy days were self-reported over the past 30 days and capped at 30 days.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that treating caregiver depression will reduce unhealthy days. This analysis used baseline cross-sectional data and showed associations, not a tested treatment effect.
