The Effect of Health Belief Model-Based Creative Drama Education on Health Locus of Control and Smoking Perception in Adolescents: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Sultan Esra Sayar, Cantürk Çapik

PMID 40047297

WHAT IT FOUND

The drama programme did not clearly shift adolescents' internal health control compared with usual school activities, but it increased recognition of smoking harms and lowered positive perceptions.

Key findings

01Students who received the drama programme had higher awareness of smoking harms and lower positive perceptions of smoking than students who continued usual school activities.

02The between-group difference in internal health locus of control after the programme was not statistically significant, despite a higher mean in the drama group.

03In the drama group, internal health control scores increased and external control scores decreased from pre- to post-test.

What it does not show

Only 37 students in the intervention group and 36 in the control group were analysed, all eighth graders in two schools in one city. Students were assigned by school, so school differences may have affected outcomes. The drama group started with lower internal health control than the control group (22.18 vs 25.72, p = 0.014). No blinding of students, teachers or assessors is described. The study was not pre-registered. Outcomes were health control and smoking perception scores, not measured smoking behaviour. The sessions were moderated by a lecturer with a creative drama leadership certificate. The paper contains inconsistent reporting: Table 6 uses 1 to 5 means that do not match Tables 3 to 5 and gives directions opposite to Tables 3 to 5. No follow-up beyond the post-test is described.

The easy way to misread this

Do not read this as proof that creative drama reduces adolescent smoking. The study measured health control and smoking perception scores, not smoking behaviour, and the between-group internal health control result was not significant.
