WHAT IT FOUND

Younger adults after a heart procedure who felt more supported by friends and family also rated their family resilience as higher.

Higher support was linked to stronger sense of coherence and more adaptive coping, but the study cannot show support caused resilience.

Key findings

01Family resilience correlated positively with social support (r = 0.419), sense of coherence (r = 0.309), and adaptive coping (r = 0.430).

02Social support had a direct positive link with family resilience in the model (0.247; 95% CI 0.119 to 0.374).

03Indirect links ran through adaptive coping (0.122; 29.05% of total effect), sense of coherence (0.041; 9.76%), and sense of coherence followed by adaptive coping (0.010; 2.38%).

What it does not show

The survey was cross-sectional, so it cannot show that social support caused family resilience or that improving support would change outcomes. Participants were recruited from patients available at one hospital in central China, so the findings may not apply to other regions or healthcare settings. The sample was mostly male, with 212 men and 39 women, so results may not apply well to female patients. Only patients aged 18 to 60 years were included, so it says little about older adults after PCI. Family resilience was rated only by the patients, not by spouses, caregivers, or other family members, so the family system may be incomplete. All variables were self-reported questionnaires, and 5 of 260 collected questionnaires were excluded for short completion time and 4 for patterned responses. This left 251 valid responses.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that social support causes family resilience or that nurses can improve resilience by simply increasing support. The study measured associations at one time point, used self-report, and did not test an intervention.
