WHAT IT FOUND

The PROMIS Fatigue short form tracked a longer fatigue questionnaire in African American adults newly diagnosed with sleep apnea and prediabetes.

The PROMIS Sleep Disturbance short form did not.

Key findings

01PROMIS Fatigue scores were moderately correlated with Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory scores in this sample.

02PROMIS Sleep Disturbance scores were not associated with Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory scores or its subscales.

03The PROMIS Fatigue and Sleep Disturbance measures had high reliability in this sample.

What it does not show

The study was a pilot with 26 participants, all African American adults with prediabetes and newly diagnosed OSA who had not started treatment, so the findings may not apply to other racial groups, people with diabetes, or people already receiving OSA treatment. The sample was recruited before treatment partly because of a national sleep equipment recall and supply chain shortages, so results may not reflect symptom severity after treatment begins. The study compared scores at one time point and did not test whether these measures change care or patient outcomes. PROMIS Sleep Disturbance did not correlate with the longer fatigue measure, so it should not be interpreted as a fatigue measure in this sample.

Declared interests

This work was supported by a National Institutes of Health funded center pilot grant, and the authors reported no conflicts of interest.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that the PROMIS Sleep Disturbance measure assesses fatigue or that these brief measures improve care. In this study, PROMIS Sleep Disturbance scores were not associated with the longer fatigue questionnaire, and the study did not test patient outcomes.
