WHAT IT FOUND

Online sustainable nutrition education, added to healthy nutrition education, raised women's sustainable eating behavior scores and improved body composition compared with healthy nutrition education alone.

Final weight, BMI and physical activity did not show clear differences between groups.

Key findings

01The group that also received sustainable nutrition education had a significant increase in sustainable and healthy eating behavior scores (p = 0.024), and their final scores were significantly higher than the healthy nutrition education group (p = 0.013).

02The decrease in body fat percentage was greater in the group that also received sustainable nutrition education than in the healthy nutrition education group (p = 0.021), and the increase in muscle mass was greater in the group that also received sustainable nutrition education (p = 0.003).

03Analyses on 85 women found no significant difference in physical activity between the groups.

What it does not show

The follow-up was short, so long-term effects are unknown. More participants were lost from the sustainable nutrition education group, leaving unequal group sizes at the post-test. The groups were not balanced for BMI at baseline, with more obesity in the healthy nutrition education group. The study included only women in a limited age range and excluded pregnancy, lactation, special diets, medication affecting weight, eating disorders, weight loss surgery, and chronic disease, so results may not apply to other patients. Lifestyle, genetic and environmental factors were not controlled.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that sustainable nutrition education alone causes lasting weight loss or increased physical activity. It was added to healthy nutrition education, the follow-up was short, the groups differed at baseline in BMI, and physical activity did not differ between groups.
