WHAT IT FOUND

In 62 patients with chronic vestibular disorders who failed conventional therapy, integrative vestibular rehabilitation improved near visual acuity, fusion, and stereoscopic vision.

It also reduced dizziness handicap and improved quality of life. Because multiple treatments were combined, we cannot isolate which specific technique caused these changes.

Key findings

01Integrative vestibular rehabilitation significantly improved near visual acuity, with the mean score changing from 2.83 to 2.4.

02Visual fusion and stereoscopic vision improved significantly, with 26.7% of patients restoring retinal correspondence and significant gains on the Worth four dot test.

03Patients reported significant improvements in quality of life and dizziness handicap, with DHI emotional scores dropping from 45.31 to 28.57.

What it does not show

The study was retrospective with no control group, so improvements cannot be definitively attributed to the treatment rather than natural history or regression to the mean. The intervention was a complex, multi-component package (vestibular, cervical, maxillofacial, visual, psychological). It is impossible to determine which specific component drove the observed changes. The sample size was relatively small (62 patients), and the population was highly selected (chronic, non-responders to prior therapy). The study included patients with significant comorbidities like anxiety and depression, which may have influenced outcomes and the rehabilitation approach.

The easy way to misread this

Do not assume that specific vestibular exercises or visual therapy alone caused the improvements. The treatment was a bundled, multi-disciplinary intervention, and the study design cannot isolate the effect of any single component.
