Experiences of Sexual Health and Intimate Relationships in Women With Lipedema: A Qualitative Study.

Johanna Falck, Jan Mårtensson, Lise-Lotte Jonasson and 2 others

PMID 40135932

WHAT IT FOUND

Women with lipedema described avoiding intimacy because of body shame, pain, heavy limbs, and compression garments, yet longing for closeness; partner criticism worsened this, while responsive touch helped.

Healthcare professionals did not address sexual health.

Key findings

01Women described shame about their naked bodies as a recurring barrier to sexual intimacy.

02Physical pain, swelling, and heaviness restricted women's ability to engage in and enjoy sexual activities.

03Healthcare professionals did not address women's sexual health during their encounters with them.

What it does not show

The study included only 16 women, all recruited from a Swedish lipedema association, so it may not represent women with lipedema in other countries, younger women, women from different ethnic backgrounds, or women with different sexual preferences. Only 16 of approximately 340 invited women consented, and 2 of the 18 who consented withdrew, so the sample may be biased. The participants were middle-aged or older, and all except three women were in a relationship, so the findings mainly reflect older women in relationships. The study was qualitative and did not test any intervention, so it cannot show whether physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or nurse-led dialogue improves sexual health. The study did not include partners' perspectives, so it describes women's accounts of partner behaviour only.

Declared interests

The easy way to misread this

Do not read this as evidence that any treatment improves sexual health. It describes experiences of 16 women with lipedema, not a tested intervention.
