Examining the Relationship Between Healthy Life Awareness and Psychological Well-Being in Liver Transplantation Patients: A Structural Equation Model.

Sevinç Meşe, Pınar Harmancı

PMID 39914803

WHAT IT FOUND

In 202 adults at least 1 year after liver transplant, higher awareness of healthy living was associated with better psychological well-being.

Education, income and gender were linked to awareness, but the study cannot show that changing behaviour improves well-being.

Key findings

01In the final model, healthy life awareness directly predicted psychological well-being (β = 0.68).

02The model's predictors explained 60.8% of the variance in psychological well-being.

03Male gender was associated with lower healthy life awareness in the model (β = -0.22), while income was associated with higher awareness (β = 0.14).

What it does not show

It is a cross-sectional survey, so it cannot establish that healthy life awareness causes better psychological well-being. It used convenience sampling at a single centre in Turkey, and the authors note limited generalisability to larger or other cultural groups. Only literate adults were included, and people with psychiatric disorders were excluded, so it may not represent more impaired or mentally unwell patients. 208 participants were approached and 202 analysed; six were excluded for missing questionnaires. Outcomes were self-reported scales, not clinical measures of transplant complications, medication adherence or function. The model trimmed insignificant paths, so the reported pathways are not the same as testing all possible sociodemographic relationships.

Declared interests

The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

The easy way to misread this

Do not read the 60.8% explained variance or the path model as proof that a nurse-led healthy-living programme will improve psychological well-being. The study measured associations in existing patients; it did not test any treatment.
