WHAT IT FOUND

Male patients with drug abuse who did Health Qigong or aerobic exercise reported better sleep, and measured sleep improved.

Health Qigong gave more benefit than radio gymnastics on several sleep and quality-of-life scores.

Key findings

01In 89 analysed patients, both exercise groups improved subjective sleep after 12 weeks, and Health Qigong improved objective total sleep time, sleep efficiency and sleep latency.

02Health Qigong showed greater improvement than aerobic exercise in sleep latency, sleep disturbance, daytime dysfunction, total sleep time, and deep and light sleep rate.

03Health Qigong improved quality of life in role-physical, bodily pain, general health, mental health and role-emotional dimensions, while aerobic exercise and control showed little change.

What it does not show

Only male patients were studied, so the results do not show what would happen in women. The sample came from a mandatory residential treatment institution and was selected by convenience sampling, so it may not apply to other settings. The study did not distinguish drug type, duration or route, so it cannot show whether the effect depends on those factors. The control group kept their usual routine inside the institution, so the study cannot separate the exercise effect from the residential treatment routine. The sample size was limited, despite reaching the predicted minimum.

Declared interests

The authors declared no potential conflicts of interest. The study received financial support from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Drug Mandatory Treatment Institution, also named as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Drug Rehabilitation Administration.

The easy way to misread this

Do not conclude that Health Qigong alone caused the improvement. Participants were in a residential treatment institution with a regular routine, and the control group also showed some subjective sleep improvement. The study also included only male patients and did not distinguish drug type, duration or route.
