Dutch translation and validation of the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB)-short form.

The study did not use Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis, which is considered the optimal validation method, due to resource constraints. Ceiling effects were present, particularly in healthy controls and some head and neck cancer patients, meaning the tool may not capture subtle participation issues in people with mild speech problems. Participants were recruited from specific hospitals in the Netherlands and Belgium, which may limit generalizability to other Dutch-speaking regions. The study excluded patients in the acute rehabilitation phase, so the results may not apply to people with rapidly changing speech abilities.

The authors declared no conflicts of interest. The Netherlands Cancer Institute received a research grant from Atos Medical, which contributed to the infrastructure for quality-of-life research, but the authors state this did not influence the study design or results.

Do not assume this tool is interchangeable with the Speech Handicap Index (SHI). While they correlate strongly, the CPIB measures communicative participation (involvement in life situations), whereas the SHI measures speech impairment and handicap. Use the CPIB when your goal is to assess social participation specifically.
