SLP Other 2019 Construct validity of the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10). Disability and rehabilitation The EAT-10 mostly reflects one swallowing-symptom pattern and patients use its 0-4 ratings as expected, but two items did not behave as expected and scores correlate only weakly with aspiration and diet findings. Use it for patient-reported symptoms, not to replace swallow testing. SLP Case Report 2018 New Swallowing Method to Improve Pharyngeal Passage of a Bolus by Creating Negative Pressure in the Esophagus-Vacuum Swallowing. American journal of physical medicine & rehabilitation A man with severe swallowing problems after a stroke found that forcefully contracting abdominal muscles while elevating shoulders helped swallow. Tests showed bolus sucked into esophagus by negative pressure despite weak pharynx. His oral intake improved, but a case report cannot show it works. SLP Pilot 2019 Detection of Swallow Kinematic Events From Acoustic High-Resolution Cervical Auscultation Signals in Patients With Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation In 35 stroke patients, several neck microphone features peaked within 0.1 seconds of key swallow X-ray events in at least 60% of swallows. The study found timing links, not proof that the device diagnoses aspiration. SLP Case Series 2018 Effect of orbicularis oris muscle training on muscle strength and lip closure function in patients with stroke and swallowing disorder. Journal of physical therapy science In 10 stroke patients, orbicularis oris training added to traditional rehabilitation (sensory stimulation and muscle strengthening) was associated with increased lip strength and better lip closure. Because both were given, the training's separate effect cannot be known. SLP Pilot 2018 Double Blind Study Investigating the Effect of Different Voice Prostheses on Ease of Swallowing and Residue Post Laryngectomy. Dysphagia Neither patients nor experts consistently identified one best voice prosthesis for swallowing. Experts did find less residue with the Blom Singer Classic Indwelling on thin liquids and the Provox Vega on soft foods, but patient ratings showed no difference between devices. SLP Other 2018 Oropharyngeal swallowing function in patients with presbyphagia. Journal of physical therapy science Older adults with age-related swallowing difficulty had swallowing study score values of pharyngeal wall coating 5.2 ± 3.44 and aspiration 3.60 ± 3.04. The study only described scores, not treatment effects. SLP Other 2018 Maturation of the Coordination Between Respiration and Deglutition with and Without Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Lesion in an Animal Model. Dysphagia In infant pigs, the delay between a swallow and the next breath grew from day 7 to day 17. Pigs with a recurrent laryngeal nerve lesion showed a larger age-related change, but the lesion alone did not shift timing. SLP Pilot 2018 Neural Mechanisms of Swallowing Dysfunction and Apraxia of Speech in Acute Stroke. Dysphagia Failing an aspiration screen and apraxia of speech were linked in 68 acute left hemisphere stroke patients. Broca area lesions were linked to both, but the deficits rarely occurred together, so one does not predict the other. SLP Other 2019 Do Ratings of Swallowing Function Differ by Videofluoroscopic Rate? An Exploratory Analysis in Patients After Acute Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation Rating swallowing videos at a lower frame rate changed how clinicians scored impairment compared to the standard rate. Some measures looked worse at the slower rate, while others looked better. This suggests lower frame rates may distort clinical judgment of swallowing function. SLP Other 2018 Swallow Event Sequencing: Comparing Healthy Older and Younger Adults. Dysphagia Healthy older adults showed less variation in the order of swallow events than healthy young adults, and some timing differences appeared. These are healthy norms, not evidence that aging causes a swallowing disorder. SLP Other 2018 Pink1 -/- Rats Show Early-Onset Swallowing Deficits and Correlative Brainstem Pathology. Dysphagia Rats with a Parkinson-related gene deletion swallowed larger boluses and moved them faster through the throat than normal rats. Chewing slowed with age but did not differ between groups. These are rat findings, not human swallowing evidence. SLP Case-Control 2018 Lingual and Jaw Kinematic Abnormalities Precede Speech and Swallowing Impairments in ALS. Dysphagia People with ALS who had no speech or swallowing symptoms moved their tongue differently during water drinking than controls. Their posterior tongue moved less and more slowly, and their jaw moved more and faster. SLP Cohort 2018 Coordination of Pharyngeal and Laryngeal Swallowing Events During Single Liquid Swallows After Oral Endotracheal Intubation for Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Dysphagia In 11 ARDS patients after intubation, the time the larynx stayed closed was unchanged compared with healthy volunteers, but time to close the larynx was longer and the whole swallow took longer; only one aspirated. SLP Other 2018 Comparison of orbicularis oris muscle strength and endurance in young and elderly adults. Journal of physical therapy science Older adults pressed their lips to 9.3 kPa on the pressure sensor and held for 13.3 seconds, compared with 15.5 kPa and 38.5 seconds in young adults. Reduced lip closure may matter for swallowing, but the study measured healthy people. SLP Cohort 2019 Medically Unexplained Oropharyngeal Dysphagia at the University Hospital ENT Outpatient Clinic for Dysphagia: A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study. Dysphagia In 14 adults with swallowing complaints but no detectible abnormality on swallowing examination, 6 had clinically relevant anxiety and 3 had depression. Self-rated swallowing severity did not match these symptoms. Ask about anxiety and depression in these patients. SLP Other 2019 Establishing a Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Clinical Pathway: An Implementation Evaluation and Audit of Dysphagia-Related Services and Outcomes. Dysphagia A head and neck cancer pathway kept speech and dietetic appointments running, and swallowing outcomes mostly matched a prior research cohort. Complexity was the main staff barrier; the audit cannot show the pathway caused outcomes. SLP Other 2019 Characterizing the Flow of Thickened Barium and Non-barium Liquid Recipes Using the IDDSI Flow Test. Dysphagia Tested barium recipes could be made to match IDDSI slightly to moderately thick levels and stay stable over time, but adding barium often thickened liquids more than the same non-barium recipe. SLP Other 2019 Assessing Hyolaryngeal Excursion: Comparing Quantitative Methods to Palpation at the Bedside and Visualization During Videofluoroscopy. Dysphagia Bedside palpation judgments of reduced versus normal hyoid movement differed by measured forward position only, and videofluoroscopy judgments did not differ by any measured position. SLP Narrative Review 2019 "Hidden in Plain Sight": A Descriptive Review of Laryngeal Vestibule Closure. Dysphagia This paper reviews the physiology of laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) and how it is measured. It does not present new patient data or test interventions, so there are no findings to change practice. SLP Other 2019 Volumetric Changes to the Pharynx in Healthy Aging: Consequence for Pharyngeal Swallow Mechanics and Function. Dysphagia In healthy adults over 65, larger pharyngeal lumen volume was associated with worse pharyngeal constriction and more vallecular residue. Age and sex did not add to these differences, but stronger posterior tongue was linked to more pharyngeal shortening. SLP Cohort 2019 Repetitive Saliva Swallowing Test: Norms, Clinical Relevance and the Impact of Saliva Secretion. Dysphagia Saliva-swallow counts varied by age and gender, not dry mouth or medicines. In stroke patients, the test flagged 69% of SSA-S risk cases, so a normal score cannot rule out swallowing problems. SLP Other 2019 Effect of electrical stimulation on aspiration in children with cerebral palsy and dysphagia. Journal of physical therapy science Lower penetration-aspiration scores were reported after four weeks of submental electrical stimulation in five children with cerebral palsy and dysphagia. The study had no control group, so the score change cannot be treated as proof the stimulation caused it. SLP Cohort 2019 Swallow Screen Associated With Airway Protection and Dysphagia After Acute Stroke. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation A nurse-administered 3-oz water screen missed many swallowing problems in 48 acute stroke patients: 15 of 35 who passed still had dysphagia on fluoroscopy. Failed screens were associated with airway protection impairment, but passing did not rule out dysphagia. SLP Qualitative 2019 SLP-Perceived Technical and Patient-Centered Factors Associated with Pharyngeal High-Resolution Manometry. Dysphagia SLPs saw pharyngeal manometry as an objective add-on to videofluoroscopy or FEES, especially for unclear cases, treatment planning, progress tracking, and biofeedback. They disagreed on which patients should get it and when. SLP Other 2019 A Novel Three-Dimensional Analysis of Tongue Movement During Water and Saliva Deglutition: A Preliminary Study on Swallowing Patterns. Dysphagia Healthy adults moved the back of the tongue more than the front up and down when swallowing saliva or water. Larger water volumes produced wider tongue movement on the up-down and front-back axes. Side-to-side motion changed little. SLP Cohort 2019 A Comparative Analysis of Eating Behavior of School-Aged Children with Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Their Caregivers' Quality of Life: Perspectives of Caregivers. Dysphagia Caregivers of school-aged children with eosinophilic esophagitis did not report different eating behaviors than controls. However, they experienced significantly higher worry about choking and greater difficulty managing mealtimes, reducing their own quality of life. SLP Cohort 2019 Relationship Between Laryngeal Sensation, Length of Intubation, and Aspiration in Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure. Dysphagia Absent laryngeal reflex after extubation was associated with aspiration, especially in patients with shorter ventilation. It was not associated with pneumonia. The study reports association, not cause. SLP RCT 2019 The Effects of Electrical Stimulation Pulse Duration on Lingual Palatal Pressure Measures During Swallowing in Healthy Older Adults. Dysphagia Short-pulse electrical stimulation in healthy older adults lowered peak tongue pressure and tongue pressure area during swallowing compared with no stimulation and long-pulse stimulation. Pressure timing did not change. Participants tolerated higher current with short pulses without more discomfort. SLP Other 2019 Modulation of Tongue Pressure According to Liquid Flow Properties in Healthy Swallowing. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Healthy adults pressed harder and faster on the palate as liquids became thicker, and they took smaller sips. At the low barium concentration used, barium-containing liquids did not change tongue pressure compared with nonbarium liquids. SLP Other 2019 Reference Values for Healthy Swallowing Across the Range From Thin to Extremely Thick Liquids. Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR Healthy adults under 60 usually swallowed each bolus once, with little residue. Thin liquids had the most penetration, and thicker liquids changed sip size and timing. These values are for comparison, not treatment evidence. SLP Cohort 2019 An Investigation of Factors Related to Food Intake Ability and Swallowing Difficulty After Surgery for Thoracic Esophageal Cancer. Dysphagia In 32 patients, vocal cord paralysis after thoracic esophageal cancer surgery did not show a relation to inability to ingest food. Cervical lymph node dissection was associated with inability to ingest food on postoperative day 7. SLP Narrative Review 2019 Management of Dysphagia in Acquired and Progressive Neurologic Conditions. Seminars in speech and language Patients with progressive neurologic disease often under-report swallowing problems because sensory perception degrades. Clinicians should rely on imaging rather than patient self-report, and verify any compensatory maneuvers or diet changes with instrumented evaluation. SLP RCT 2019 Pediatric Prolonged-Release Melatonin for Sleep in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Impact on Child Behavior and Caregiver's Quality of Life. Journal of autism and developmental disorders Children with autism and poor sleep who took prolonged-release melatonin had fewer outward-directed behavior problems than children taking placebo after 13 weeks, and caregivers reported better wellbeing. Social withdrawal and anxiety did not change clearly in the whole group. SLP Narrative Review 2019 Community service speech language therapists practising in adult dysphagia: Is the healthcare system failing them? The South African journal of communication disorders = Die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir Kommunikasieafwykings New speech-language therapists in South Africa often feel underprepared to manage adult dysphagia independently due to limited training and lack of supervision. The article argues that mandatory mentorship and accessible continuing education are needed to support these junior clinicians. SLP Cohort 2019 Development and validation of a screening tool for feeding/swallowing difficulties and undernutrition in children with cerebral palsy. Developmental medicine and child neurology A four-question parent questionnaire identified 48% of children with cerebral palsy at risk for feeding issues or undernutrition. It caught all severe cases. Use these questions to decide who needs a full speech pathology or dietetic assessment. SLP Narrative Review 2020 Development of Excised Larynx. Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation This review summarizes how excised larynx models clarify voice mechanics. It reports that freezing causes 5% geometric distortion. It notes that vocal fold disorders raise the minimum power needed for phonation. These findings explain laboratory mechanisms but do not prove clinical treatment effects. SLP Pilot 2019 Laryngeal Vibration Increases Spontaneous Swallowing Rates in Chronic Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: A Proof-of-Principle Pilot Study. Dysphagia Neck vibration at 70 Hz and 110 Hz raised spontaneous swallowing rates versus sham in 13 participants with chronic dysphagia. It did not speed voluntary swallow initiation, and the increase did not persist when vibration stopped. SLP Other 2019 Development of a Non-invasive Device for Swallow Screening in Patients at Risk of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: Results from a Prospective Exploratory Study. Dysphagia A neck sensor device detected unsafe swallows on thin liquids with high sensitivity, missing only 10% of cases. It over-detected risk in 40% of patients. This device is not yet validated for clinical use and cannot replace a standard swallowing assessment. OT SLP RCT 2019 The effect of intensified nonverbal facilitation of swallowing on dysphagia after severe acquired brain injury: A randomised controlled pilot study. NeuroRehabilitation Intensified nonverbal facilitation of swallowing was feasible but did not significantly improve clinical swallowing scores compared to control. The intervention group showed positive changes in laryngeal elevation speed and maximum elevation during treatment, while the control group worsened on these measures. SLP Other 2019 A Device that Models Human Swallowing. Dysphagia A throat model measured how fast and how much pressure a thickened bolus produced as it moved through a model pharynx. It showed flow and pressure patterns similar to reported swallowing ranges. This is device validation, not patient evidence. PT OT SLP Cohort 2019 Relationship between the nutritional state of elderly people in need of support or nursing care and jaw-opening force and tongue pressure. Journal of physical therapy science Better nutritional scores correlated with stronger jaw-opening force in 25 care-dependent elders, but not with tongue pressure. Low jaw force may signal malnutrition risk, though the small sample limits certainty. SLP Other 2020 Association Between Pharyngeal Pooling and Aspiration Using Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in Head and Neck Cancer Patients with Dysphagia. Dysphagia Severe pooling in the pyriform sinuses and valleculae after swallowing thick liquids was linked to aspiration, even when no aspiration was seen during the exam. Mild-to-moderate pooling showed no such link. These findings suggest pooling severity may help estimate aspiration risk. SLP Other 2019 Simultaneous Radiological and Fiberendoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing ("SIRFES") in Patients After Surgery of Oropharyngeal/Laryngeal Cancer and Postoperative Dysphagia. Dysphagia After head and neck cancer surgery and radiotherapy, FEES and VFSS done together gave different swallowing scores. VFSS detected aspiration missed by FEES in 16 of 202 swallows; FEES scored more residue. SLP Other 2019 Effects of Motor Imagery and Visual Neurofeedback on Activation in the Swallowing Network: A Real-Time fMRI Study. Dysphagia Healthy adults increased swallowing-related brain activity using real-time fMRI feedback while imagining swallowing. The feedback group showed higher activation than the offline imagery group. This confirms the mechanism works in healthy brains, but the study tested no patients and measured no swallowing function. SLP Cohort 2019 Vocal Fold Paralysis/Paresis as a Marker for Poor Swallowing Outcomes After Thoracic Surgery Procedures. Dysphagia Vocal fold paresis or paralysis was coded in 0.55% of thoracic surgery discharges. Those discharges had more swallowing complications, feeding tubes, tracheostomy, longer stays, and higher costs, but only 18.1% had ENT/SLP services. SLP Other 2019 Radiation Risks to Adult Patients Undergoing Modified Barium Swallow Studies. Dysphagia A full protocol modified barium swallow study delivered a median total effective dose of 0.27 mSv. Thyroid dose was 1.7 mGy, and estimated cancer risk was 11 per million for 20-year-old men and 32 per million for 20-year-old women. SLP Other 2019 Assessment of the Food-Swallowing Process Using Bolus Visualisation and Manometry Simultaneously in a Device that Models Human Swallowing. Dysphagia In a throat-shaped machine, thicker liquids moved more slowly, had lower wall shear rates, and produced higher pressures than thinner liquids. This is device testing, not patient evidence, so it cannot show what happens when someone swallows. SLP Other 2020 The Prediction of Risk of Penetration-Aspiration Via Hyoid Bone Displacement Features. Dysphagia A measure of how far the hyoid bone moves forward during swallowing was associated with disordered penetration-aspiration scores. Older age and thin liquids also raised risk. This was a preliminary risk calculation, not yet a clinical tool. SLP Other 2020 BaByVFSSImP© A Novel Measurement Tool for Videofluoroscopic Assessment of Swallowing Impairment in Bottle-Fed Babies: Establishing a Standard. Dysphagia A new scoring system for baby swallow studies grouped 21 components into five domains. Scores for airway closure and aspiration strongly matched how much liquid entered the airway. These physiology scores also aligned with clinicians' feeding recommendations, though not with caregiver stress. SLP Other 2020 Predictors of Residue and Airway Invasion in Parkinson's Disease. Dysphagia In people with Parkinson’s disease being considered for deep brain stimulation, disease severity did not predict swallowing residue or airway invasion. Reduced pharyngeal constriction and delayed airway closure were linked to these problems, and the links varied by swallow condition. ← Previous PAGE 3 OF 15 Next →
